  • The PlayStation 2 is one of the first home consoles to offer backwards compatibility, able to play the overwhelming majority of original PlayStation games and being one of the major reasons for the PlayStation 2's success early on. Join me as I take a look back at backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 2 and see how the feature worked on the console.

    I’ve had a few questions about the PS2 Slim so i’ve just wanted to clarify:
    ALL PS2 Slims play PS1 games but they do so slightly differently.
    The first PS2 Slim uses PS1 hardware like the PS2 Phat models (Model number SCPH-7000x).
    All later PS2 Slims (Model number SCPH-7500x onwards) do not use PS1 hardware but instead use software emulation. Compatibility is slightly worse but they can still play almost ALL play PS1 games.
    You can check the model number on the bottom of the PS2 Slim to see which PS2 Slim you have.
    Sorry for the confusion but I hope this clears things up.

    Can confirm that the 240p issues is a thing. For years I thought that the PS2 simply can't dispay PS1 games via component until My Life In Gaming covered it and I found out that it was actually my TV's fault. There are a few PS2 games that also run in 240p like Ico, for instance. It's the same issue with the PSP. When you have it set to progressive mode and use component cables it will output PS1 games in 240p. In the PSP's caes, you can simply switch to interlaced from the menu and it will output 480i.

      I've heard reports from some people that some Slim models apparently had an issue with scratching discs. You are wrong. Slim models does not use full software emulation. Hi ! homebrew developer on PS2 dev scene here :). Actually 90xxx slim models has better emulation than slim 75xxx models. 75xxx models removed the R3000 PS1 CPU and changed to a ARM 400Mhz CPU codename "deckhard" this new CPU has the same registers and instructions set as the R3000. This is what we called FPGA emulation and is very very accurate. Is a chip that simulates another chip behaviour. However this caused many bugs with the GPU software side emulation many of these bugs were fixed in the 90xxx models. I tested most of the games (those that I own) of that wikipedia list on my 90xxx and all worked. Which proves that list is incorrect

      Interesting, thanks for the info. It's also interesting PS2 has better PS1 emulation than PS3 in some cases. For example I just bought Driver 2 thinking I will play it on my PS3 but that game is absolute mess (you can see on YT videos, graphics is full of artefacts all over the screen after exiting car and slows down every few seconds in missions). growing up i DEFINITELY used my PS2 as the main way i played my PS1 backlog. served me VERY well until i finally got my PS3 in 2016 (poverty made me wait 10 years before i could actually get a PS3) which continued to serve me VERY well and continued to be my preferred PS1 platform even AFTER i had already made the switch to fan-based emulation for everything else pre-sixth gen besides PS1.
    ePSXe just didn't feel as good to use as emulators for other systems and it locked up for me on a lot of games, my potato laptop was NOT going to run XEBRA, PCSX-R would never recognize any of my gamepads, Mednafen is super user-unfriendly, and RetroArch is.... well it's RetroArch and RetroArch just fucking sucks in general (except for the mobile and PS3 versions, those are really good).
    so i stuck with my PS3 as my preferred method of playing PS1 games from 2016 all the way up to 2019 when i thought i bricked it, which is when i switched back to using my PS2 for PS1 games. that lasted about two years, because in summer of 2021 i discovered DuckStation and never looked back.
    currently, the only time i use my PS2's backwards compatibility is for games that support swapping to an audio CD to generate a level or a character, which happen to be a pain in the ass to play on emulator (for obvious reasons). so games like Vib-Ribbon and Monster Rancher 1&2 i still use my PS2 to play. yes i KNOW there are workarounds to still play them on emulator but it's just easier for me to play on console and physically swap the discs.
    multi-disc JRPGs i play on the emulator tho. m3u files are a godsend.
    also, my mom had The X-Files PS1 game when i was a kid and that one never seemed to work properly on our PS2.
    EDIT regarding my "bricked" PS3: i THOUGHT i had essentially soft-bricked it because it kept restarting and forcing me to do a file system check every time i turned it on. lots of circumstances (i wont go into detail) then happened that lead to me not using that PS3 for four years. i got my hands on it again after a while (it had been at my friend's house going unused in the meantime, bc that's where I was staying when I "bricked" it). it works ALMOST flawlessly again tho, even the CFW that i thought was the reason it "bricked" works (almost) perfectly and I didn't need to reformat anything. i say ALMOST perfectly tho because the PS3 itself still has some physical issues unrelated to the CFW. for example, the USB ports on my PS3 will charge things, but they won't read any storage devices, so USB transferring is out of the question, which also takes PKG games out of the list of things i can get on it. im stuck with ISO/JB folder because i can only use FTP and/or legit disc-ripping to get games onto it and the licenses for PKGs are only EASILY transferrable via USB and I am NOT using PSNPatch and risking a ban on my PSN account that has all my legitimately purchased digital PS4 games on it. another issue: the CFW won't read my PS1 ISOs properly, but WILL read PS1 games from a CD-R. however, I can't play Vib-Ribbon or Monster Rancher on my PS3 because the games slow to a crawl upon disc swapping and continue to stay at crawl speed even after switching the game disc back. my PS2 doesn't give me those problems with those two games, and im using the EXACT SAME CD-R BACKUPS ON THE PS2 THAT I USED IN THE PS3 SO IT'S NOT THE IMAGE FILES OR THE MEDIA IT'S PRESENT ON. so yeah, hope you enjoyed this overly long autistic infodumping explanation on why I use the PS2 for Vib-Ribbon and Monster Rancher 1&2 over the PS3 despite the PS3 offering better video quality.

    • @mrratchet
      @mrratchet  Před měsícem +1

      @@An_ok_guy Disc read error means one of two things:
      1) The discs are damaged
      or
      2) The disc drive laser in your PS2 is worn/needs cleaning or has failed (This is more likely what the issue is). Note - a different laser is used to read CD's (music/PS1/blue PS2 discs) compared to DVD's (DVD movies/PS2 discs)
      To test to see, try a PS2 game. If it loads, then the DVD laser is ok.
      Next, try a music CD and/or a PS2 blue disc. If it gets disc read error, then you'll need to try cleaning the laser or it needs replacing.

      Are you sure about that? What model of the ps2 slim do you have? I have a 79000 model and it silent hill 3 works fine. I haven't played through the whole game yet, only just an hour in, but I haven't found any problems so far.

      @@Enzed_ I have a North American PS2 Slim 90000 model. And it gave me all kinds of problems!! But if your saying it works fine on a North American PS2 Slim 79000, then that's awesome!!!! I had a Japanese Slim model that also gave me problems with the Japanese version of the Silent Hill 3 game. When I was having problems I looked it up on message boards for help and a lot of other people were also having the same problems. But some people were saying it worked fine for them, but they never told us what Slim model or the region of the console, so it wasn't much help!! Now I should tell you the PS2 PAL models has a lot less compatibility problems for some reason? That kinda sucks for the rest of us! But if it works fine on the North American PS2 Slim 79000, then that's a game changer for me. Because my PS2 Fat model isn't the most reliable. @@Enzed_ Okay, that makes more sense.. The PAL version is a lot more compatible in so many other ways as well. PAL PS2 light Gun games can use a ton of different lights Guns for almost any game. But North American and Japanese are very specific on what light Guns you can use and it's not very many. It does suck that all the PS2 consoles aren't the same in compatibility and it causes a lot of confusion. But what can you do?! Anyway, thanks for trying to help.🤩👍👍

    "The PlayStation 2 is one of the first home consoles to offer backwards compatibility,"... really not trying to be critical, were you born after 2000 or do you have alzheimer's? I am not sure what the other alternatives could be. Sega Genesis was made with the intention of being backwards compatible, hence the color limitation and use of FM synth, The Gameboy line was all compatible with older iterations (gba could do color, color could do base), and then there is the snes super gameboy. True, 2 of these requires an additional purchase but they were features intended from the launch of the system, meant more like options on a car rather than an essential component. with most of the add-ones, what the hardware does is make the physical contact points with a different media, not act as the game processor.

    • @mrratchet
      @mrratchet  Před rokem +1

      "One of the first" does not mean the first. I'm well aware there were other implementations, both via additional hardware or in the case of the Atari 7800 supporting Atari 2600 games (despite skipping its immediate predecessor the Atari 5200.
