I am from Russia, but an Indian railway fan. Travelled a lot on Indian trains. Just to let you know that 2AC isn't 2nd class, but it means that you have 2 berths on one side as against 3 berths in AC 3 tier. They have 2nd class, but you cannot reserve tickets for that class in advance, but that's where the real adventure lies. I have always preferred travelling in 2nd class, or the non-ac sleeper class. Greeting from Izhevsk (the land of AK 47), Russia.

The surprising fact is, even with all the poverties and dirt and all the other nuances that come with third world densely populated countries, some of our trains are really, I mean really classy, I have always wondered about that, My father works in Indian railways, thanks to him, we rode many expensive classy trains almost free of cost when I was under 18. I really love some of our trains. But only first class though, others can get quite crowdy and messy!

Very few foreigners wait at the waiting room or travel in a type of train that you travelled in. So people were probably wondering "Hey, what's wrong with these westerners?" The food was rajma chawal, curried red beans with rice. And the lady had kachouries.
Trains get coaches as per their importance. Since this is a 'middle class' train, the coaches are older and possibly with a problem with their suspension system. Hence the bumping.
Who sleeps in the upper berth when the lower ones are empty?
The old town area in Jodhpur has houses painted blue, not the whole town. It is also called the Sun City
A tea seller right near you just as you wake up is the most welcome thing of an Indian train journey.

Trains are the best mode to discover India. They are cheap, comfortable and safer. I reckon my college days when explored the faroff part of India in trains. Mostly travelled overnight such that I saved money on hotels. Station provided cheap food with decent taste and standard hygiene. They are called lifeline of India for a reason :).

Hey, I hope all well with you guys, thanks for visiting our country hope you enjoyed it. You must have noticed travelling across those people in India mainly understand English in terms of vendors and in India if you stay in any homestay in any city in future you will experience good local cuisine, culture etc. And people all speak English everywhere so no prob with communication. And yes we have the largest rail network in the country and it's becoming better and best day by day. You may not know this that we have indianrailways tweeter acc and immediately on complaining they take action. Hope you visit next time in some part of northeast of India. Take care.

This is great - thanks for sharing. I loved indian trains too - yeah its a little rough around the edges but good fun. We (spoiler) got a sleeper train in Vietnam a few weeks back before 'you know what' and we were over the moon when they said we had a four bed room to ourslves. Cue fiddling with all the light switches and accidently calling the conductor :S
