As a bears player I get why a lot of people dislike playing against them, for the reasons you guys mentioned! The bear save was quite obnoxious, so do think the nerf to that was fine, but they never were really that competitive in singles. Before people knew how to defeat them, they had a bit of time where they did some work but most people figured out strategies to beat them pretty quickly, which mainly revolve around shooting them a lot and avoiding the bears while you rinse through the beornings.
I don’t think the beornings are undercosted because they really do go down quite easily at D4, the army has no other profiles and the difference five points would make to them would be huge. Having ten beornings is usually not enough for objective scenarios, let alone say eight. At that point they would need a buff I would argue!
Going on now but I think the big problem with bears in casual settings is most people tend to want to play the game by fighting and defeating the other army, but it’s very easy to beat the bears in objective scenarios (which is most of them) by largely avoiding them
And only fighting on your terms for the most part. By that I mean, simply playing the objective rather than getting drawn into a fight with an army which will out fight you and out kill you.

Beornings just should not be Fight 5. It makes not sence for them been Fight 5. If they were fight 4 they would be fine. You already have 2 bears with F7 &F8 that mess up your heros. A lot of armys have only F5 heros and when you can not even kill the troops with them they get really useless. The problem with the F5 is also that they are two attacks with a banner behind it, so 3 dice to win the fight and then they can deal massive damage.
It is just to much in total. Beornings are big strong men that know how to fight, but compared to a regular Human they have +2Fight +1Strenght +1Defence (d4 without armor!) +1 attack,+1wound, +2 courage. Then also burly and resistanceto magic. They are like supersoldiers, not stronger humans.
Courage 5 is also a bit to much, even if it does not matter that much

@@grimgrauman7650 the logic behind them having F5 is a completely different story really. Sure, I don’t think a Beorning should be an equally-skilled fighter to an elf. I do however think that in terms of balancing an army, if you were to make the beornings F4, they would be a pretty useless army. They are a contributing factor to the fight value power creep that has currently taken place, with F5 being the meta generally speaking, but without it they do not have any answer to F5 armies.
They are not a well-balanced army and don’t make a lot of logical sense in the game, but they are not over-powered. They have few troops, who can be dealt with if you play against them correctly and either one or two big hitters who can be countered relatively simply.
Just on the courage, again they are an elite army with very few troops. You give them lower courage, they will melt. If you’re paying a premium for troops, they need to have staying power.

Not sure about the Gamling nerf. It was only 3 inch anyway, so it won't affect that many heroes. Plus to benefit from it, you have to keep your heroes together. So you'll lose the hitting power at other places/objectives.
Plus, with max F5 you need something. The basic troops won't do much. S3 amd F3 base isn't too great. Even the +1S on the charge doesn't do much against higher defence opponents. F4 near Théoden helps somewhat.
