- Mission Impossible Fallout might have set a new high for the Tom Cruise action franchise, but Brad Bird's Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol also plays a significant part -- not only did it bring MI and TC back in form, it's also a fantastic example of how to build a situation in movies. So, as we await for Mission Impossible 7, let's climb back to 2011's Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and the world's tallest building Burj Khalifa and run away from a sandstorm to see how to create situations.

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol
Academy Award-winning director Brad Bird (Ratatouille) makes his live-action feature directorial debut with the fourth installment of the massively successful Mission Impossible series. Mission Impossible Fallout
After a dangerous assignment involving the recovery of stolen plutonium goes wrong, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) elects to keep his team out of harm's way rather than complete their mission, which results in a team of expertly trained operatives taking possession of nuclear weapons. Consequently, Ethan and his IMF team (Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson) must join forces with CIA assassin August Walker (Henry Cavill) in order to prevent a catastrophic nuclear fallout. Produced, written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Also starring Alec Baldwin, Angela Bassett, and Michelle Monaghan - Krátké a kreslené filmy

Good job on foreshadowing the advertisement! It's always fun to watch your ads. and what a lucky coincidence XD
I just realized the movie opens in Budapest and Hawkeye is in this movie.
Maybe that's why he remembers it differently.
coincidence?
No, William Brandt is in this movie
@@strikerbowls791 you have to be fun at parties. Lol
Multiverse!
One underrated compliment I have to give "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" is how they use a fake news broadcast to explain the importance of those plutonium cores. Instead of having a huge exposition dump from one character to another, explaining what could happened if they exploded, we as the audience can than actually see the consequences of how it will affect the world. And what will happen if they fail the mission.
That's really cool
Hell yeah!!
This!
That whole scene was so good, I went back and forth wondering whether it was real or they were faking it.
👏👏👏👏👌
I feel like the Mission Impossible franchise is a rarity in the way that each movie seems to get better as it goes on. In my opinion, every single one of these movies is rewatchable.
John wick!!
Mission Impossible 2 is actually kinda painful to watch outside of the action scenes. That bad guy was so cringy.
Except for the second one.
I hate the 2nd, it's unwatchable
We all know the second one never happened, is 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ...

I also loved how he used his Twitter haters for his Skill Share sponsorship.
I really don't like it unfortunately. It keeps interrupting the flow of the narrative which is what I'm here for, and it feels so forced. Wish we could just go back to pre or post-roll ads.
I was looking for this comment! I appreciate what he's trying to do but as @@cloisty said, it actually felt a bit forced. So yeah, he needs to either work on it more or just stick to pre-roll or post-roll ads.
@@cloisty Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

It's so refreshing to hear actual Russian speech in a Hollywood movie. I'm so used to terrible impersonations from American actors, but the guard actually was legit Russian
What about Tom's lines. Were they good?
@@blazeraz7666 I mean, you can clearly tell it's not a native speaker saying the line, but the accent isn't as strong as some other actors' (like Scarlett Johansson in Avengers, Zarya in Overwatch, etc.), so I guess props to him
@@don1041 Haven't seen it yet, please don't spoil the movie
Same for french
@@don1041 OK, I watched Tenet recently, he's actually pretty good, he even kinda looks like a Russian guy. His accent was obviously not entirely believable, but passable. They all make the same mistake of trying to sound slow and dumb, with some weird intonation going down in every sentence. That's not really how it works. Russian accent should be pretty much normal in intonation, but way rougher in phonetics. Consonants in Russian are extremely rough, as clear as you can make them. In some cases, like if it's the very last sound of the word, it can be dulled down ("g" to almost like "k", "b" to almost like "p", and so on). Vowels are reduced in almost every position without emphasis ("o" to "uh", and so on, so for example the word "korova" - means "cow", written down in Latin alphabet - has the emphasis on the second syllable, so the first "o" is reduced to almost a hard "a", sounds more like "karova", unless you're from one specific region of Russia where they don't reduce vowels, the same goes for hard "e" and "i" respectively). Plus, you gotta take into account that some sounds in English don't exist in Russian phonetics, like "th" (both soft and hard versions), and a lot of Russians struggle a bit with those, even a lot of teachers. So, if you wanna sound more Russian, stop trying to simulate the stereotypical "Soviet Russian" accent and try to speak more or less proper English, but with some grammatical errors like a missing/wrong article here or there, or maybe a wrong conjugation, and mess up the phonetics a little bit in the way described above. BTW, his assistant was actually played by a legit Russian guy, Yuri Kolokolnikov, he's in a lot of American movies and series nowadays
This guy, building up his situation to pay off with an ad.

Reiner is such an underrated actor when it comes to comedy. Man has serious comedy chops. When you got one on one screen time with Simon Pegg and steal every scene right out from underneath him, that is Hawkeye's true super power: expert comedic timing. 🎯 Bullseye, baby
I rewatched this movie the other night and realized I forgot how good it was. Fallout is INCREDIBLE but this put us back on track.
The reason for the gadgets going haywire is also because it's Brad Bird directing this film. He's known for injecting realistic implications into mainstream genres like the spy or superhero genre (see "The Incredibles"). It's a clever way of deconstructing those genres.
"I'm sorry I'm reading off of Google drive and it's being a bit... ok"
Checkovs gun is lock and loaded sir
Man, the Burj climbing sequence is one of the best things I've ever seen - experienced - in an action movie. And it wasn't even one of the typically loud action scenes that today's action movies are full of.
Still my favorite Mission Impossible movie simply due to three major points: 1) The ENTIRE IMF is disbanded! There is no help whatsoever from anyone coming at the last minute! 2) The stakes have never been higher. We're talking nuclear apocalypse! The bad guys want to wipe the slate clean Thanos-style! 3) Every. Piece. Of equipment. Fails. To work properly!
Watching Filmentos videos on the Mission: Impossible series have caused me to go back and watch all of them after ghost protocol and now I am a total Mission: Impossible fan
There is also the problem in which the obstical becomes to big where them succeeding becomes more comical that cool.
I.E. Ethan's hitting the top of the window. 10:07
I remember watching in the cinema when it first came out and loving it
The entire dream heist finale of Inception is an amazing example of a sequence done right. Entertaining, escalating, and always moving forward, managing to be very tense and emotional. It has to be one of the greatest sequences of all time.
The Paddington films have a similar throwaway setup early on that pays off at the end. They're so well plotted.
Ethan: "We?"
Benji: "... I... I'm on the computer..."
Yah, that means YOU Ethan, lmao. Literally laughed out loud at that bit in the theater...
Nice to see someone giving Mission Impossible the credit it deserves. With the exception of 2, they've all been above average and getting better with every sequel.
Your sponsor transitions are getting better and better, well done lad!
The moment that he first mentioned google drive I knew this was about to be a buildup to a sponsored segment
I'm impressed by the creativity, and not even mad about it. haha. However, I think it'd be best for him to just stick the ad in the end of the video. Makes for less of a distraction from the video's message.
One of my favorite things about this series is that they set up characters in a way where you always believe they're competent enough to succeed (so it doesn't feel like they pull a win out of thin air), but it never feels like it's EASY. Case in point being how much Ethan gets the shit kicked out of him by enemies AND environmental damage but still keeps running. He's constantly getting the wind knocked out of him to the point where he starts limping and yet keeps going.
I love how many running scenes Tom does for this series. The scene along the waterfront in MI3, the Dubai sandstorm chase in this movie, the chase in Rogue Nation after he nearly drowns and the rooftop chase in Fallout. I know Tom gets typecast as 'stoic action man', but I think Ethan Hunt is actually underappreciated as a character. He has this frenetic energy about him in action scenes but he's also incredibly clever and quick-witted.
Absolutely AGREED
My man is really putting in effort for his sponsors. If I were them, I’d be paying Filmento more. He earns it.
How are you always coming up with video ideas that I didn't know I wanted so badly? Literally every single video of yours is extremely interesting and original.
Mission Impossible is really underrated as a Franchise. Tom Cruise is today's Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brendan Fraser.
yea and the crazy part is he’s in their age range but still making good action movies
Vader sequence in Rouge One is absolutley marvelous. I won't forget it
I think you're underestimating MI3 in getting the series finally on track: it's the first to focus on teamwork (even though the team characters aren't fleshed out yet), and the first to focus on repeated team sub-missions, AND it ramped up the emotional stakes better than MI2 without betraying the existing fanbase like MI1 (though MI1 does do better character work with the teams.)
Absolutely! MI3 is when J. J. Abrams became involved and upped the action and added a sense of humor. Without MI3, Ghost Protocol never would have happened.
Same thing I was thinking, 3 was great

The 'Mission: Impossible' franchise started its winning streak with this one.
That said, I do think they did overdo the tension. The scene of Hunt and Brandt trying to enter the train felt unneccesary and as you mentioned, the mask-making machine breaking down felt out of the blue. Personally, these flaws took their toll in the final act where I've become desensitized of the thrills.
Still a good movie overall, but not as great as the two sequels.
What about mi:3? Philip Seymore Hoffman, and a couple of pretty great action/stunt scenes. Tom cruise goes swinging off a buldig in Shanghai, and gets blown sideways on a bridge
The machine breaking down felt out of the blue? That's how things happen in real life.
94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The next two have 93% and 97%. It's hardly in a lower tier
@@strikerbowls791 Exactly. I don't think that it's fair calling Ghost Protocol good and Rogue Nation/Fallout great as all three movies clearly belongs on the latter category. It's just a matter on which one you like more.
@@strikerbowls791 I use Rotten Tomatoes as a "compass" but I don't always agree with the scores. It only determines whether a movie is good, mediocre or bad, but not the movie's precise quality.
The way this man intergrates his ads are actually amazing. He builds up an idea that something is wrong with google's website through the google drive's strange occurance, emphasising that its a problem through the inability to make a video. Then when he calls upon themes of percevirance and struggles, his account is logged off again, a natural continuation of the occurances happening on drives and a natural continuation of the thematic ideas that are being tackled as the problem of not signing in is an obstacle that must be toppled. Then he introduces nordpass as a method of solving this problem, in other words despite the form it takes, it is the representation of perservirance and hope, something that we are meant to be using in our hardest of times(like getting into a google account). A true masterclass of storytelling, bravo
That scene where Ethan climbed that building gave me so much anxiety. By the way, loved the build up and smooth transition to the Nordpass sponsorship.
Great video as always. I honestly think part 3 brought the franchise back. Ghost Protocol helped cement it. People sleep on 3. That's my favorite one
My favorite part of this video is that it describes itself. True comedy right there.

Edit: I was right!
Mission Impossible is a rare franchise. It's got a pretty good consistency, with no movie being extremely bad.
I often state this as one of my favorite movies ever, and definitely my favorite action film. Thank you for validating my choice, it's just so exciting!
I love the sequence in Coraline, where she goes back into the Other world to find her parents. The sequence has a very slow progression, and makes use of it in the best way possible, so that when all hell breaks loose at the end, you’re on the edge of your seat.
Is anyone else going to give the director of this movie some props? This was Brad Bird's first big live-action movie. Before this he did The Incredibles and other animated movies. I was excited for this movie because he was the director, and good job!
Gotta admit, I was worried for my boy Filmento, so much suffering after reviewing New Mutants, Transformers 4 and TASM2
Aspiring novelist here. I really enjoyed this since it relates so well to my current project. I'm struggling with the sort of episodic structure I've got going similar to the idea of film situations. The characters in my novel fail their plot goals basically every time but complete their story goals (their growth). Focusing on that I think will help achieve that satisfying ending I'm after when the MC finally gets that big win.
these videos made me watch the latest mission impossible movies and im super happy, they're so fun! i hope filmento does a video about rogue nation too, that was awesome!
I like how he sets up his sponsors just like how he explains setting up a scene
My most memorable sequences of all time? The Raid 2 Hallway Fight/ Kitchen Fight. It's 10 minutes of pure action on display, but it's never dull; the dynamics are so fluid that it keeps my blood pumping every time I watch it.
I love how to manage to talk seriously and put of few funny edits in the video while finding the perfect scenes for your talking.
You also create perfect situations.

I remember watching this movie on theaters it was an ENJOYABLE experience.
I saw this film in IMAX because there was an extended preview of The Dark Knight Rises beforehand. I don’t like heights, so the part when Ethan climbs the Burj Khalifa made my palms sweat. It still does to this day! 😖
This is my favourite of the MI's. Objectively, it may or may not be the best, but it's what reinvigorated the franchise, and so is my favourite by far. Plus it's hilarious 😂
Every thing that Tom Cruise does it's a situation.
Just like the films you analyze, there will never be a sponsorship Segway as smooth as the one from your last video.
(But it was still great this time though)
The thing that I liked about Ghost Protocol than the rest is because it really feels like an adventure. Each sequence takes place in some landmark, the next ones just has the sequences take place in some alley, street or abandoned structure

Ghost Protocol is one of the best action movies I've ever seen. I've never been more hooked into an action movie before I saw this one. (Bear in mind I watched Rogue Nation and Fallout after I watched Ghost Protocol, and all three are amazing!)
For me Ghost Protocol has the coolest set pieces. Doesn't hurt it is very good as well.
Now I know that "Failed Successfully" meme has a movie xD
The MI movies are underrated action blockbusters. Fallout has an amazing car chase sequence and the tension it builds are the finale is masterful. Imo

Also the fact that the stunts are all real and its actually Tom cruise jumping , breaking legs , hanging from airplanes , falling out of a plane , speed driving in Paris makes the films a 100 times more enjoyable than modern day films where stunts are CGId and stunt doubles are used with much protective sets and props
Most memorable seq of all time : Heat's bank robbery then shootout. How the robbery builds tension for the shootout. it's probably the best setup and payoff in action movies.
Have to agree- Ghost Protocol was the film that made the Mission: Impossible franchise work. It ditched the plot device of having the Impossible Missions Force compromised by a double agent: it was the first film since the original to show two different IM Teams- and it really showed how effective Ethan Hunt was as both a solo operative & as a team leader. It was also the first to show the IMF Secretary, oft referred to in both the TV series & films.
That's got to be the best sponser transition i've seen made by a youtuber. It shows that you do what u preach.
Sooo basically. . .
Every Ghost Protocol sequence ever: *Task failed successfully*
Sometimes you have to lose your way to victory
The build-up to the add was freaking beautiful
That ad switch was graceful af 🔥🔥🔥
Dude, leave it to an editor to make the greatest ads for his sponsors. No boring mid roll ad read here, no no no mister Bond. You get a properly set up ad break, fully intergrated into the subject matter of the video. Any sponsor should be paying double for this type of ads. Great job. The video is amazing as always. Keep up the good work.
Another good thing that this constant cycle of things going wrong and the objective becoming more difficult is that it makes the heroes feel less prepared, so the stress level is raised for them in a believable way. So depending on the performances, this can greatly increase the tension.
This video just proved to me how much I like the _Mission: Impossible 2_ theme.
Most memorable sequence? Car chase in Atomic Blonde. Yeah, we've seen tons and tons of crashy smashy car chases in movies, but that one we're in the the car the entire time in a single long shot and it was just friggin' great.
I agree with this analysis and it was amazing, but Mission Impossible 3 was the one that brought the franchise it's current status and style.
Filmento, the type of guy to foreshadow and make a situation out of his ad. Respect.
This made me really wanna rewatch this movie.
It's crazy that you made this video, when Ghost Protocol came back on netflix the other day I rewatched it and I was thinking so much about how perfectly they execute these intense sequences; like with every move there's a problem, and with every solution to said problem there's an entirely new problem lmao I mean fallout is the masterpiece but this was what set the bar
