Do you realize how difficult it is to play a FIVE STRING fretless bass?? This girl is unbelievable! I absolutely love her. She makes it look so easy. No effort at all, as if she was born with a bass in her hands. She has "The Gift," in Spades. She is what they call an "old soul." BRAVO, Ellen!
I know! I think I would be able to be like her. If I was younger maybe in my 20s. I am now 55 and starting to play the bass.

Frets? Who needs frets? Certainly not this talented little lady. It's a pleasure watching her not only because she is amazing, but because of the joy she shows whenever she is playing.
Jaco Pastorius called frets "speedbumps", so he ripped them out. The rest is history...
This is probably the most musical video you've ever posted... like you're a great player and all, but this was a full song, instead of just some short phrases, and on an instrument where intonation, accuracy, and especially FEEL, really matters, and you absolutely nailed it in every way.

@@addictedtoguitars4948, I really hope she or her father answer your question. From what I heard from videos way back, she wanted to learn the bass. Not sure of how many videos or interactions you've seen of them, but if he was pushing her into playing you wouldn't see the enthusiasm as Ellen shows us in the videos. I hope this helps answer your question.
@addictedtoguitars4948 Little kids wear their emotions on their sleeves. Her emotions hanging on her sleeves are obviously much joy. The videos with her dad show much love and obvious enjoyment on both parties.
No. CZcams is concerned about Ellen still being very young. Her dad has to be in the videos so that they receive money from CZcams.
Her Dad is not pushing her into anything. They work together and are very happy.

It is nice to see Ellen's progression in talent, she is such a mature player for her age group. And this fretless bass sounds great on this video. Kids grow up so quick, I hope she never loses that happiness and smile as she gets older, it is as beautiful as her playing.

One of my favorites already is the family music video of the singing out in the forest. Ellen looks like a little princess today and her playing is superb. I'll play this many times over. It looks like a Marluexe, frettless bass made in Germany ! Fantastic basses, but pricey.

@janqs2459 No frets and touch. Maybe a little chorus but not necessary.
Fear seems to be the enemy when it comes to playing fretless. Don't overthink it and listen... it can be that easy. The more you play and trust your ears the easier it becomes.
Ellen has figured that out.
@@janqs2459 I think you'll find that is actually the sound of the bass . The Marlueax, does have a switch on it for 3 different tones !

@@Brad5161 I play unmarked fretless, its not as hard as it looks ! There are guidance dots on the top of the neck for every other note.
To play your flats and sharps you just have to get your fingers dead centre of the 2 dots !
But yes ear training is the key !
Wow! I didn't pickup the fret-less bass until I was seventeen. (I'm 58 now..) I can't wait to see what she'll do when she's big enough to play an upright acoustic!
Like many kids, this young lady is fearless. No limits, no preconceptions. I can only dare to imagine where she'll be in 15 years. I'm confident that she will keep that creative spark alive as we all watch and listen with admiration for the years to come. We're already blown away by her ability. God bless her parents for the encouragement, love and support. Without that love, none of this would be possible. Play on!! ❤
She needs to get a bit taller---then she can work on the stand up acoustic bass. The '1/2' size will begood for herin 2-3 yearsI hope. The standard bassis called a '3/4' size and she may be able to get to this at about 14 or15. Every time I see Ellen play, and having watched her for the last several years, it gives me hope for the younger generations today. I have been playing bass for almost 50 years and have never truly LOVED it the way Ellen seems to do.. bravo! And the sound of that fretless is SO darn cool!
She has an edge that most people don't have in that she plays and practices with her dad, and they appear to have a remarkable bond. It must make the work a lot more fun! She also has the talent, obviously. I just think that she's remarkably lucky that way.

I remember Ellen saying "never" to a 5 string fretless bass to which Hovak said, "Don't say never!" He was right again, Ellen. Great job on that beautiful bass.
That's some marvellous, musical playing right there. And besides that stunning right hand articulation, that left hand on a five string fretless is superb. Really for this age out of this world! Congratulations! - it's for sure unbelievable talent but a lot, lot, lot of hours and hours of practicing.

She instinctively knows exactly where her tiny finger tips have to go on that particular size instrument to get what she wants out of it. She has many different guitars, all different sizes. She does not have to look. This is a true child genius."

I play frettless bass, a lot is training your ear, but she will have dots on the top of the neck as guidance which does make it easier than it looks . Nether the less what a unique talent this young lady is.
