  • Dick Turpin was born on the 21st of September 1705 and died by being hung on the 7th of April 1739
He was an English highwayman that was romanticised and rode a horse called black. Beth
That was made famous by the Victorian novelist William Harrison Ainsworth who wrote the book called Rockwood almost 100 years after Dick Turpin's death.

Watching this video brought back some great memories from when I visited York in 2009. Turpin's grave was one of the sights I went to, but more than seeing that I think what really stuck with me was the lovely inscription on one of the other graves: "A loving father, a husband dear, a faithful friend lies buried here". I still think about him and wonder who he was in life.

It's surprising that people actually see him as a sort of hero. Highwaymen were violent scum. Where I live theres a story about a Highwayman called William Crew. It's said he was known to be acquainted with Turpin but I don't think the dates tally . He was a notorious highwayman that avoided the noose and became a man of the cloth at a local church in Wotton under edge. After a while, he decided there was more financial gain in robbing people and started robbing people again. It was rumored that he killed somebody which he always denied and eventually he was caught and charged with murder and robberies etc. He was going to hang even without the murder charge. Whether or not he did kill somebody, he denied this but if you were hung for murder, you were hung then medically dissected. This was possibly a good reason to plead not guilty to murder but he was hanged and its said that a huge crash of thunder and lightening happened during his excecution, which people were taking this to mean that God was displeased with an injustice. His body was taken away for dissection and after the body was said to have been buried at the church he worked in, in an unmarked grave. His ill gotten gains were never found (well officially.) Who would have disclosed that they found it. Finding loot is not gonna benefit a person by giving it to the authorities ) it was said he buried or hid them in local woods, which even today would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. It's a well wooded valley.
