I had my daughter aged 14 watch the film with me and it changed her life! She could not understand what was in the minds of the people who tortured and hurt this gentle man. She just passed her psychology degree with honours! Because of Joseph Merrick! Now she has an educated understanding of him and the people who hurt him! RIP Joseph Merrick. ❀

Hi TDN isn't that wonderful comment how powerful the film can be. I'm so pleased she got into psychology and passed her degree. That was the decision early on when Pomeranz’s play was first produced in the late 1970s. The idea was to emphasize Merrick’s humanity and vulnerability rather than have the audience focused on makeup or prosthetics. Over the years actors as varied as David Bowie, Mark Hamill, and Bradley Cooper have all played Merrick this way.

Hi Alan and thank you again for such an interesting video! Watching you, it feels like we're in a conversation....very homely indeed.
Ah, poor Joseph Merrick 😱..... such cruelty he experienced in his short lifetime. I'd like to think that today's society would be more tolerant..... but yet I still see bigotry, racism, homophobia etc out there. You are absolutely right that we should not judge a book by its cover.....its the contents not the dust-sheet that counts!!
    Thanks again Alan!! đŸ€—

Hello my favourite underpants absolutely, I love researching them and Im surprised now much of the attitudes from the past still exist today. It's almost like the world is split into two types of people, The ones that care and the ones that don't and don't think much. my goodness. There's a lot of goodness out there as well. I love that you love the channel and I feel like I'm talking to you and it's nice to see the names. Maybe one day we will meet up that woukd w be lovely. All the best and thank you for the moment. I wonder if people like him are put on this earth to teach us not to judge by looks. He was a lovely kind gentle soul. God bless him. If theres a heaven hell get there. I used to to think i was ugly and watched the film about him and it changed my life, i feel so grateful now i didn't suffer any awful disease like him. And i felt selfish too for complaining about my looks and merrick just got on with his life the best way he could ❀

Joseph Merricks skeletal remains are kept (not for public viewing) within the Garrod Building (,The Royal London Hospital Medical College moved there in 1854) The building is now part of the Whitechapel Campus of the Queen Mary University of London. A replica of his skeleton is on display at the Royal London Hospital Museum and Archives.

Very moving. Thank you for doing this. I didnt realise part of his body was buried. What a terrible set of circumstances for one human being. Dear Joseph. I wondered why our weather was so similar not realising your video was less than an hour ago. What a lovely poem. Thank you friend :-) Enjoyed your one on little Lena. I used to do a night run in my job into Hoddesdon and i used to pay my respect at the graveyard be it from outside as it was closed. Modern events shows how some still have such a disregard for the dignity and uniqueness of individual lives but graves though sombre acknowledge that everyone is a one off and remembering them is what makes us human. Thank you for all your efforts pal.

  • @Lets-do-the-TimeWarp-again

Thank you for this video. I wish I weren't so far to even visit the grave he so deserved. In my opinion, treating his remains as science objects was extremely disrespectful. But at least they found out that his 'disease' came from his mother, Mary Jane's side. Joseph Merrick's courage changed many lives, including mine, and his legacy was leaving the example that we can always be better, we should always aim for goodness and spread love, no matter how hard the world beats you. It's still impossible for me to even conceive being like that, but I do try to follow his steps, since filling his shoes is impossible for most people, including me.

Joseph's story is very difficult to convey, even by way of an exceptional feature film. To have survived all that Joseph was subjected to is alone remarkable. His story merits telling repeatedly if only to celebrate the fundamentals in life and what truly matters in essence. So much today is both trivial and devoid of any substance whatsoever. Joseph stands out as humanity at its very best despite the sheer level of trauma he was having to contend with, both physical and psychological. Its very nice that you salute him in this way.

The film was certainly a tear jerker and very shocking to see first time around in particular ( I’ve seen it several times but it always brings on the tears). Really fabulous portrayal of John Merrick by John Hurt, amazing acting and also the part played by Anthony Hopkins, another great actor. Thanks so much for covering this. So sad his skeleton could not be laid to rest properly though but I’m sure he is with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and truly at peace đŸ™đŸŒ

Hello Crystal, I always think it's a little bit grossome even at the end because his skeleton is in a museum but it's not for public viewing and The plaque is for the remains of the ashes The only good thing is that he had had some dignified time near the end of his life, which must have been wonderful. The surgeon obviously was fantastic to look after him. I'll tell you a say cut. When I did the film I got there with only about 25 minutes before the cemetery closed. It was the most ruched one I've ever done 😜 have a great day! Alan

Early on you say that the film of The Elephant Man was directed by David Lean, when, in fact, it was directed by David Lynch. I can see how Lean was a inspiration, because the film looks positively Dickensian. But it was in fact, David Lynch‘s second film.
