Standing with "moral clarity. They backed a bigot for years, who could't go one day without tearing someone down. What happened to Israel is terrible. This doesn't escape the fact that when Israel was placed where it is, and Palestinians were displaced. The Palestinian population has suffered under Israel rule. It goes too far for students to put the blame of the attack on Israel, but the other side of the story is missing here and needs to be told too.

the fact is, the Palestinians, since being displaced by Israel's creation in 1948, have not faired well. Anti semitism is bad. As is anti Palistinian actions and crime. Gaza is a 30 mile strip of land 6 miles wide that has 2 million palistinians there, the vast majority are not Hamas, and they have been getting slaughtered and starved. in an action that will fuel hate at least another generation or two. Neither side is going at this right. and so this conversation will last forever.

The purposeful obfuscation of Western Christian antisemitism, which is an ancient hatred with deep theological roots, with contemporary Palestinian hatred of Israel has to stop.
Christian antisemitism is directed towards a people that supposedly refused to accept the Messiah and were complicit in Jesus’ killing. This hatred over 1500 years resulted in the Spanish Inquisition, innumerable pogroms and ultimately in the Holocaust. Nothing equivalent or similar exists in Palestinian tradition.
Palestinian hatred for Israel is a much more recent phenomenon that started after Palestinians were expulsed from their land, defeated, humiliated and occupied.
When Germans conducted the Holocaust, they were not responding to a Jewish occupation. There were not 2 million Germans under siege by Jewish forces in a thin strip of land along the Baltic coast. Their hatred for Jews was pure, traditional, western antisemitism.
It is true that in later years, Hamas and others picked up antisemitic tropes like the Elders of Zion conspiracy theory. But these tropes were developed by and introduced to Palestine by the West.
I am not trying to justify murder or hatred. But we need to be very clear about the origins of the phenomena. They are not alike.

If the situation were reversed, if Palestinians had locked up Israelis in Gaza, I would feel the same. Humanity. Conscience.
