- Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized to the families of children who suffered abuse on social media platforms during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday.
“I’m sorry for everything you’ve all gone through,” Mr Zuckerberg said, turning to audience members holding up pictures of their loved ones. “Nobody should have to go through what your families have suffered. This is why we have invested so much and are going to continue industry-leading efforts to make sure that no one has to go through the types of things your families have suffered.”

This is an area where the governments around the world should 100% step in and create safety measures for vulnerable groups, these company’s clearly are not going to do it, the governments around the world are late to be implementing these measures. Parents also hold a responsibility to their children to help them navigate through these horrible social media sites, imagine a stranger walked up to your child and told them think x y and z would you tolerate it? I think not, so why let a stranger online do the same?

There’s a huge difference between a knife and social media. A knife makers knows full well his/her products could kill and doesn’t deny it, and in fact would have to adhere to safety measures when selling them. Mark Zuckerberg has been publicly denying any wrongdoing doing even though he knows the harmful impact his product has on people’s life and he has been avoiding putting in safety measures since he started his business.

The bottom line is an unpopular opinion but yes he and his company have made millions but poor (and often overly strict) regulation in America contributes to that. In addition, whilst the content shouldn’t be there to begin with, that is the very nature of the internet and it will always be exploited, that’s not something unique to Meta as ALL platforms suffer from it. The harsh reality is that parents should take more responsibility with what their children are doing on any internet platform. It’s a two way street between internet platforms and parents both needing to do better to prevent.

These are vastly different. Gun manufacturers are not allowed to sell to children. If a parent lets a child have a gun unsupervised and something happens that parent is responsible and has committed a crime at minimum of neglecting their child.
Facebook is not truly age restricted. I believe the minimum age is 13 but we all know kids are on there and without a parent are able to access even if you did everything as a parent, public schools and libraries all have computers and other kids have tablets and smartphones.
People committing crimes on the platform is the platform's responsibility to work with governmental agencies and within their company to deter such activities or by default they are complicit.
There are many similar examples in society to protect adults from crime... These are children a far more vulnerable group.
