Top university presidents grilled in House hearing on campus hate speech

  • The presidents of Harvard, MIT and the University of Pennsylvania faced tough questions about a surge in expressions of hatred on U.S. college campuses from the House Committee on Education and the Workforce Tuesday. Several GOP members accused the university leaders of slow, ineffective or inadequate response to threats and hostility witnessed following the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) called for the resignation of Harvard President Claudine Gay.

There's no such thing as so-called "hate" speech. The continuous use of this phrase is an attempt to normalize it and manipulate Americans into thinking it exist and needs to be outlawed. It's an attempt to limit and weaken the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which gives people in our country Freedom of Speech. If they are able to start eroding our right to free speech they will not stop with what they ban us from saying. They are trying to silence you and criminalize what you want to say. Imagine how smothering that would be to you. You have a thought about something, an opinion, but you can't say it because you could get arrested. Don't let them do this. Do not let this happen.

I taught in an Ivy league for quite some time before going back to Europe, and I am not surprised by these answers. Most faculty I met there, especially in the humanities, are completely ideologized. I'm myself a liberal, but I observed that most of my colleagues were not. Their vision of the world is tribal and intransigent. They do not tolerate any disagreement on political matters, and do not support free speech at all. Claiming that hate speech such as calls for genocide is "context dependent" is outrageous, especially considering that the slightest deviation on questions of gender, race, and sexuality can put an abrupt end to your career or studies--as happened so many times in the past. Many of my colleagues would teach books that praised the use of indiscriminate violence against civilians in the name of "national liberation" and "anti-colonialism." No surprise then, that many students develop such hateful views on the massacres committed against civilans in Israel. US academia has lost its moral compass. Ideology smashed it into pieces.

True face of US democracy exposed- The butcher has the right to butcher/slaughter the lamb but if the lamb bleats or cries its a crime against humanity. The West and Arabs have given butchers the right to massacre Muslim women and children in Gaza.
If a Jew is killed its a crime against humanity but when the US and Israel conduct a genocide its legal. Height of hypocrisy and double standards.
Genesis 9:6 "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man". When Jesus makes the statement “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword,” He is referring to the truth that if a person lives a violent life bent on killing others by the sword, that person will most likely be killed by the sword themselves.
A warning for all humanity- Wake up America.

To me it sounds like the college policies the MIT president cited are merely a reflection of employment law. See here what the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has to say on ‘Harassment’: "Harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA). Harassment becomes unlawful where 1) enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment, or 2) the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive. Although the law doesn't prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted)."

Here’s the thing I could be wrong but as far as I understand. Israel has been guilty of genocide against Palestinians, and those people are angry and speaking out against people who are causing their lives to be destroyed. So I can understand how they are angry at Israel. It’s not just as simple as antisemitism it goes so much deeper. I don’t think the Presidents are wrong.

No such thing as hate speech. It's just speech. Playing around with terms like "hate speech" is what destroys freedom of speech.
