    For the non-Aussies, Ben Roberts-Smith is one of the most decorated soldiers in Australian history and is currently accused of throwing a disabled man with a prosthetic leg to the ground and shooting him 10-15 times while on deployment in Afghanistan in 2009. He is suing publications for defamation saying he didn't do any war crimes, but he almost certainly did a few cheeky atrocities let's be real

      The defamation trial is turning out quite well... Instead of clearing his name, all this other fucked up stuff is coming to light. A few weeks ago we found out he also handcuffed a farmer and kicked him off a cliff. God Bless Our heroes on the frontlines of empire!

      One of my favorite memories: a friend and I were too late to a free classical music concert, so instead we pretended we were part of the organization and smiled our way through many old corridors and stairways until we found our way onto the roof. After sneaking in a window of the practice wing and playing a standup bass very poorly (got some looks after venturing into the hall) we returned out the same window and found a place to listen to the concert from above, sitting in a room with an inverted glass dome that hung over the performance hall. Couldn't really see anything and the music was a bit muffled, but it was something that only we experienced, and that was truly fantastic.
      (Unfortunately that friend is no longer alive. Still have the memory, though.)

    Reminds me of when I got into Dreamforce - one of the most high-profile tech conferences in the world, complete with business CEOs and politicians as guest speakers - by just wandering in and asking what it was about. Seriously, I happened to be in San Francisco that day and saw so many people wearing the same blue lanyards. So I followed them over to Moscone Center and asked the lady at the front desk what it was all about, and if I could see it. She inexplicably printed out and gave me a full pass, which normally costs well over a thousand dollars and requires registering months in advance. I don't know why she did that. I was just some rando who wandered in; for all she knew, I could've been some kind of terrorist. They didn't even check my backpack. I got away with tons of free swag. One of the booths had a Hawaiian theme, with the desk decorated with authentic flower leis. I talked one of the clerks into giving me one, and I wore it on the entire subway ride back home. They often got their own table at the town's inn and a very own set of cuttlery and cups, as nobody would've wanted to eat with untensils that might've got used by an executioner at some point. There is even a diary/order of commissions of a franconian executioner from the late 16th century, who performed over 350 documented executions and 345 "corporal punishments" which normally meant torture, like hacking off fingers and such. But personally he doesn't seem like a bad guy, for example he advocated for prisoners who were originally sentenced to execution by drowning. Often enough the sentence was changed due to his intervention to beheading, which is much less inhumane.

    • @jesusofbullets
      @jesusofbullets Před 2 lety +300

      Disassociating during (or even after) combat is extremely common. It’s a form of psychological protection. To kill another human being is not only the most taboo of acts, but for the vast majority of humans, it feels wrong down to the core of your psyche. Your mind has to find a way to detach from the situation to do what needs to be done. Distance or physical barrier enable disassociation significantly better. It’s easier to drop a bomb from a plane, press a button on a screen, or fire a cannon while in a tank than it is to pull the trigger within yelling range of another human, because the closer we get, the easier it is to remind us of the humanity of the enemy.
