The Gracie family was really the first to utilize "seriously strong" grappling in what used to be the UFC--long before anyone started using the terminology "MMA". For years, they dominated the heck out of things because their ground game was SOOO bloody strong. Obviously, it was the sharpness, organization, and structure of the Brazilian training methods that kept the purest, most effective techniques going over the centuries. Additionally, I also believe that it's obvious that the entire Gracie family (and many others as well for certain) kept innovating, building, simplifying where need be, and chaining together tech X with tech Y to achieve some ridiculously unbelievable submissions and overall match control.
I was lucky enough to run into some of the Gracie family members while I was at Disneyland in L.A.--right at the front of the park! They were SUPER nice to me, although all I did was pay them genuine, nonstop compliments one after another! LOL. :D I have learned *SO* much from the Gracies (and JJ in general) over the decades, I owe every practitioner gratitude. :)

@NicolaMaxwell, yeah, if anyone comes close, it's Khabib, but the advantage in speedy transitions I would say goes to GSP.
