GSP has my respect but that knife advice is terrible and will get you killed. For a knife you force distance and remove your shirt and span it between your hands. Then let the attacker swing. Block the blade with the shirt pulled taut. Eventually it'll tangle in the shirt and they either release it or sacrifice control of an arm.

Finally a realistic self defense lesson. "The minute you touch me, you are declaring war" raw line
Saying that "The minute you touch me, you are declaring war", taken literally, is terrible advice. It flies in the face of how the world works. Simply touching someone can mean a lot of things. Responding to a touch with a non-proportional response is generally unwise. Is it wise to escalate? As a general rule, no. The other person may have a range of intentions. Example #1: a drunk person bumps into you on accident. Intention to fight: unlikely. Example 2: dude pushes his finger into your sternum. Intention to intimidate or fight: high.
Now, if your intuition says you are about to get attacked, you can choose step away. Do that. Don't try to diffuse a boiling situation with words -- by the time emotions have got that hot, they don't cool down easily. Rationality is probably a lost cause. Trying to diffuse the situation only with words is risky. Step back, use body language to show you aren't a threat. Be the wiser person. Your anger and ego might not like these non-violent options, but the violent outcomes tend to be worse, even if you "win".

But he doesn't discuss the consequences of fighting (winning or losing) nor alternatives to the Krav Maga style eye and groan strikes. A video of this length can't cover much, I get it. Still, I find this one somewhat irresponsible. I think Lex could have done better in editing. This is not his first rodeo.

And I am not even talking that they dicuss a scenario when you WILL get hit anyways. Stepping back especially against an aggressive tall person gives him a great distancne for a kick, very cimfortable to hit you in the groin while you move back. Please, don't give any advice anymore. :)

@@veridianr2490 this is true. Years ago when I was younger my ex got threatened by a group of guys on her birthday in London. Me being the ultra male had to do something. Was completely outnumbered, had something to prove. Did well, they couldn’t fight all that well and I managed to stay up. That’s when one of them pulled a knife. By gods grace I have no idea how - maybe due to the sheer amount of adrenaline I managed to fight him off without getting harmed. After, I felt like such a strong man and was so proud of myself. Now I look back and I’m embarrassed, it could’ve gone so fucking wrong so easily and I would’ve left the love of my life bleeding out on the pavement whilst she cried. Best thing I could’ve done would be to tell her to ignore them, get her and her friends safely away and just leave.

Pro UFC fighters are typically aggressive people who will go after someone who they feel disrespected them but gsp seems like the guy who fights the guy bullying someone

I thought the EXACT same thing. I did just finish Cobra Kai season 4 today..haha. but GSP would for sure be part of Miagi-do. He is the good guy.
He also basically ran down the second guys teachings from cobra kai to Daniel, if your opponent cannot see he cannot fight, if he cannot breath he cannot fight, if he cannot stand he cannot fight. You take away any of these things from your opponent and you win the fight.

The part of the video about going for the eyes so quickly was not persuasive nor useful. First, avoiding a fight is preferable. Second, the context and environment is key. Sure, there are times when you "fight for your life", but this is not *all the time*. Where in the video does GSP talk about the context? Nuance is not something that GSP communicates well here in this video.

Valuable information. We all basically know this. The difference between ‘basically’ knowing it and actually using it in an emergency is the fact that we don’t ever apply it, especially on a day to day basis when training for our next UFC fight. The key for this info to be helpful to the average person watching this video is to ‘study/practice/memorize’ it. That’s when the information becomes MOST valuable.

That's why I play-wrestle my 6yo daughter every day. Even when I'm tired after a days work she jumps me enthusiastically and starts to work me to the ground, it's great :) She will have so much muscle memory when she's grown up that she'll be able to perform under stress and be safe.

Yeah, it's nice huh. All the black belts (well most it seems) tend to be very nice and know to set a good example, maybe because of the process it took to get there, but we know it's also personality and upbringing to or many more would be more like this :)

i wouldn't say he's "one of the most agressive fighters" dude has more "W's" come down to decision's defending his title than any other champ in MMA. doesn't mean he's not in the conversation for top 5... cause he certainly is. i just wouldn't call him "agressive."
GSP as a champion was like the opposite of aggressive fighter, someone who just tries to break opponents with ruthless offense, he was very calculating, found out opponents weakness and exploited them, an insane athlete with amazing takedowns and timing, dominant top control, and he had a heck of a jab
@@jacobsvensson8193 when I said agressive I didn't mean Mike Perry agressive, I meant GSP agressive. Calculating, timing, countering, but from first second until last he was putting his rapid tempo on his opponents. I rewatched his highlights few days ago, and realized GSP was freaking relentless, overwhelming his opponents with fast tempo, but yet was very careful and patient with his shots especially.
Prob the least aggressive fighter but the smartest. He’s the GOAT imo

So much of fighting is muscle memory and practice. Anytime you ever listen to someone teach self-defense, listen closely. You'll hear a lot of: if the opponent does this, then you do this. In a real life fight situation, you don't have time to think through that stuff. What GSP shows here is a mastery of joint locks, striking, and other offensive techniques that comes from years if not decades of practice. He's right about a lot of core principles: 1) don't fight fair. There's no ref, so strike the groin, the eyes, the neck, the soft spots where you can inflict maximum damage. In a fight for your life, you fight dirty. 2) Avoid fighting weapons, especially blades. You will get cut. It's a matter of who gets it worse, you or the bad guy. Avoid if at all possible. 3) If you can't avoid, put yourself in a position to win. Strike quickly and leave.
Anyway, loved the video. I'm always a fan of GSP, and a fan of the insights you get when you interview. (10 month "late" comment for the algorithm)

i think the most important skill for street fighting is being able to remain calm under pressure (after being able to run away of course). knowing how to fight is one thing, but remembering under pressure is another thing
What a delightful, kind, appreciative, warm personality and demeanor GSP has--a real gentleman.
GSP talked about speaking to his childhood bully when he got older and was actually really nice to him. Though I know this to be more common now, people with this strong energy had a time in their life that they felt as weak as a feather. As a kid who was bullied, GSP helps me understand that those moments can make us stronger, it’s all in how your perceive it!

@@XOChristianaNicole Yes, exactly. When I was a child, my male cousin bullied me. I'd go home and cry to my dad. Finally one day my dad had enough. He told me to beat my cousin, or he would spank me. I went back to my cousin, and knocked his baby tooth out. We were good friends after that, and I didn't feel helpless any more.
I was jumped in a dark ally by 2 thugs last year. Went on for about 5 mins. One guy told the other “get him down so we can finish him”. I believe staying on my feet, and causing one of the guys to lose interest by eye gauging him saved my life.
Btw you know how they say, how your life flashes before your eyes.. when I was being forced to the ground, each one my kids ran through my mind, to see them again, I had to stay up. Stay safe!

Best tactic to me is to avoid fighting at all. There is nothing wrong about it especially if you are not an experienced fighter. Street fights are dirty and without rules, so you never know if your opponent has someone in the back, weapon, etc. So most of the time it is better to run.

I'm lowkey upset that GSP doesn't have his own channel. I think he has a lot to teach and share. I'm seeing many fighters have their own channel and make content.
To hit first is great advice when you're in a situation where you can't escape and see no other outcome than to fight and defend yourself, why let the other person get the upper hand by waiting for them to hit first.. I've actually had to follow this advice growing up and it has helped me in the situation more so than running and having the problem return all the time.. But one thing is for sure, teachers doesn't care mostly, so if you defended yourself you'll most likely end up as the one starting the whole thing even if you wanted no part of it.
Here in Norway it's also not allowed to use more than necessary force to defend yourself against a threat. So if someone is trying to hit you with their fists then you can't use a weapon against them, or if someone runs at you with a knife you wouldn't be allowed to shoot them, you'd have to use equal force and you can't just hit first, even if you know you're going to get attacked at any moment. You could risk getting punished for using more force than necessary to defend yourself, I kind of understand that for some stuff.. But Jesus, they've made it challenging with how those laws works here, so much so that my girlfriend's little brother got put in prison for hitting someone back when defending himself, reason being is that some of his drunk friends decided they wanted to jump the guy afterwards even when my girlfriend's brother wasn't even involved in the whole thing anymore.
Love how GSP incorporated Bas at the very beginning. This (to me) explains how there are multiple goats and how they learn and grow from one another. Just the throwback to Bas’s bar defense video from GSP says enough (along with how he says he would NOT want to cross an indivisible of Bas’s potential in a street fight). GSP is the face of The Future of MMA by recognizing the past.

I had the pleasure of meeting GSP a couple of times when I was living in Montréal and training BJJ with Bruno Fernandes at Gracie Barra. He’s such a kind and down to earth guy. Takes his training very seriously, and none of that macho BS that is so common in UFC.

@@polderrican Yes, I trained in his first gym in Montréal for about two years. He taught a few of the classes, but most of the classes I attended were taught by brown and black belt students. Prof. Fernandes was usually present during the classes to evaluate our progress, conduct belt promotions, etc. I only met GSP two times: once at a nightclub, and once at the Gracie Barra gym.

Not only the element of surprise but also how to set up your target by understanding body mechanics, by blocking either from your left or right to make sure your target doesn't hit back and at the same time attacking the eye. For example some blocks that you do will naturally make the target to attack back. As you can see in this illustration that Lex Friedman's left hand will find it hard to throw a punch.
I would never have paid attention to UFC if it wasn’t for this guy. GSP literally legitimized the sport because he was never an a**hole and is such a nice guy that people started to think it wasn’t just a bunch of crazy Joe Rogan’s in this sport. GSP is a role model for life.

@@HitlerlandBoi It might be an idea for you to read about Sparta actual history.. How they rounded up their 'wild/savage' children that had survived the terror that was inflicted upon them... I think those children complained plenty.
@@BaconRecoil You're much more likely to be murdered or assaulted if you draw a weapon on someone in defense. Once a firearm is drawn there's no longer the "flight" mechanism in the mind of the assailant, there's only a fight or die mechanism that takes over in the brain.
If you do have a firearm, keep it hidden and don't draw it until they approach you directly with a weapon. You're best off to keep it hidden and just hint at it's existence by putting your hand in your jacket, etc. It's all psychological. Unless of course you want your children to get charged with manslaughter for shooting an unarmed man. Even if they WERE going to get in a fist fight, there's no proof of that without a weapon and the ends don't justify the means.
This obsession with the firearm really has caused a lot of hubris, idiocy and tens of thousands of kids of prison for years on end who took another persons life out of what they culturally were taught was fine to do - to take another mans life because he was having a bad day and started screaming at you.
Ask any public defense attorney and they'll tell you where giving an 18 year a weapon will get them. Sorry to disrupt your previously held belief that taking another mans life is legal and just dandy, because they're the "other".
You'll also see your child sued into abject poverty by the person they shot, or the family of the victim. (They became the victim, of course, because you made it that way instead of just teaching your child to run away from unarmed assailants instead of reaching for a firearm.) They won't be as lucky as a police officer who can just claim he saw him reaching for a knife but it was just a cell phone.

2 big difference between street fight and MMA:
- Potential presence of weapons (knife, beer bottle, piece of rock, anything other than bare fist)
- Multiple opponents
If the fight is fair, and the above 2 are not an issue, then it is largely the same as in the octagon. Otherwise it is about keeping distance, keep all opponents on the same direction, and leave the scene as soon as possible. Krav-maga is really good at these.
As for fighting style, avoid kicks, as it can easily backfire. Maybe push kick to create distance. Boxing is effective there. Avoid going down, but most street fight end up on the ground anyway, so knowing BJJ is essential.
Both these young men, (much younger than me) are classy guys, and good men.
Men like these give me hope for the future. We could use more like them.

upper cut with good leverage from your hips to the liver is a great go to technique. ALWAYS upper cut because that trajectory will kinda get around their ribcage if you throw a straight their ribcage will protect it a little bit

Thanks for this Lex, always enjoyed your programs and as a martial artist myself, adding a bit of self defence to this one, made it more interesting to me and may well just have saved a few of your subscribers lives! As knives were mentioned and my art is blade orientated, from my own perspective, while it's always better to maintain distance and get away if you can, when cornered and forced to defend yourself, the golden rule is, be as close as you can to a gun and as far away as possible from a knife.
A gun can kill you at any range, so you stand more chance of hitting/disarming the assailant when close. If you knock the person down, make sure they aren't getting up again, pick up the weapon and take it to the police, so the attacker cannot shoot you as you run away. Don't you just hate it in the movies, when people fighting for their lives leave weapons behind, or don't take the gun off their assailant when they have the chance, so the assassin gets up and shoots them later!!!
With knives, unless they throw the blade, a knife can only kill you up close, keep your distance to avoid being stabbed, use your long range weapons lead leg kick and jab and use the Bruce Lee, Inosanto JKD style of hitting and blocking at the same time.
As a last resort if a blade comes in don't just watch it stab you, grab the assailants wrist in both hands and use your free body parts, knees, kicks, stamps, head butt and bight etc to destroy the attacker. Alternatively swing them around and throw them into something hard like a door or wall.
Most importantly, in any self defence situation, always use a weapon of some kind as this is your best chance and it may also deter an attacker from coming close, so you can get away! When I was first told this by my teacher, I thought that sounds cowardly, but the truth is, self defence means defending yourself and your loved ones' without risking your health or serious injury', some people are highly trained, so even if you know how to fight, without a weapon you will have to be at your best to beat them..
For this reason, always use a weapon, consider what you are carrying pens, keys, bag etc, or grab a bottle, shoe, rolled up magazine, a stick, your belt or even a coat etc and swing it around to keep them away, then use your kicks to the groin, jabs to the eyes when the opportunity arises and follow up with hard hits.
Lastly, you are surrounded by hard fixed weapons perfect fro smashing people in to, doors, the wall, lamp posts, the floor, vehicles and other objects, slam you opponent into them and if they are really trying to kill you, make sure they aren't capable of getting up again before you run away. As you saw in John Wick, any weapon is a good weapon, even a 'Fk'g pencil' :0)

@@gaoxiaen1 The law is the 'law of self-defence'. Typically, you can only use force if they are a genuine threat. And then only enough force until the other person is no longer a threat, and which is proportional to their threat to you. Else anything more (to punish them) means you are now the aggressor, and will face assault charges, or worse if you inflict worse. You need to know the legal limits or face police action, even though you started out as the defender...
@@GreenTekGuru If they try to stand up, they are a threat. Especially if you tell them not to get up. After they've lost vision, there is no reason to get up. They are at your mercy. It is their own stupidity that earns them more injury.
@@gaoxiaen1 Just standing up is an alert to back-up, with a ‘fence’ / distance response. Then assess them as a risk. Then react accordingly. Obviously different if they launch at you from a seated position.
Even if you kill them, you won't get a long sentence. Manslaughter, at worst. Fear (being smaller) and loss of self control (It seemed like the thing to do at the time) are factors in your sentence. Better judged by twelve than carried by six. You might even get by with just probation.
