He’s constantly trying to kill the part of him (Scar face Yoongi) that carries his trauma and pain. Amygdala mv wraps up the story Yoongi is trying to share with us. Its very sad and triggering however, but I’m grateful he’s decided to share his story with us.

Yoongi keeps becoming the boss no matter what but what kind of boss he becomes each time is interesting. Now that I've seen and cried thru Amygdala MV, he is letting us know that his current version of Agust D is free from the pain that led him to power and a bit of hubris in the first place.

It's actually really interesting how Yoongi mentions being "Slaves to CZcams, " because ARMY literally pull all-nighters, multiple nights in a row, to stream new MVs and try and beat the views record. It's like, 90% of the fandom's personality at this point.

  • @cloudsn

He's calling out everyone and everything with the the lyrics, and I love it. Really poking at society like "yes, you have freedom but what are you doing with it? Being horrible to each other?" And pointing out how people pressure and shame others and shackle them to conform. The video is amazing too, I just love the look. I tend to like real sets rather than studio sets. Anyway, thanks for the reaction, I was prepared to wait longer considering the circumstances. It puts the lyrics into perspective, "freedom of expression could be reason for somebody's death." Just because a person can say something, should they?

This trilogy is so intelligent and personal, I really can't say enough good things about it, but PD just so you know the final MV in the trilogy, Amygdala, is kind of upsetting and there are references to depression and self harm. You should definitely check it out but please make sure you're in a good headspace, your mental health comes first! I definitely cried, I'm glad I had Seventeen to listen to after. Thank you so much for doing this do us ❤️ Yoongi said that Daechwita, Haegeum and his new video Amygdala are meant to be watched back to back. Amygdala will definitely provide answers, but I don’t know if it’s something you should watch right now. It’s stunningly shot, but it’s age gated with a trigger warning. Be careful. I thought I was in a strong headspace to see it, I was wrong. He’s really touching something deep.

I personally love Haegum as a song more than Daechwita. Although Daechwita is very louder and I would say more experimental with the use of Korean instruments, I really think Haegum is just the one for me. The bass and beat is so addicting. D-Day as a whole album is so amazing and I cannot wait for your reaction to it and all the songs he curated for this piece. D-Day is meant to be the final installment in this AgustD triology, but Yoongi said it doesn't necessarily mean AgustD is gone for good. So we might get another AgustD album in the future or we might never and he'll just release under the name Suga from now on. All that will depend on Yoongi's own artistic decisions which I think is so cool of him. You'll definitely get a new perspective of this whole story when you watch AMYGDALA as it's supposed to be the final part of this journey. But as like everyone has been saying it is VERY dark and is age restricted for its heavy themes that he touches upon. I hope you can watch it when you feel ready but if you think in a way it can help you to heal then it's up to you. I know when I watched it although some stuff was triggering for me, I still was able to use it as a part of my ongoing healing process from trauma since I was able to SEE one of my favorite artists express exactly what I had gone through.

that's what yoongi did too... he's not merely "criticizing" the world. it's coming from introspection. it's his own greed and conflicting emotions that make him ponder on these things, which ties up to societal issues... and that makes his thoughts truly relatable.
tbh, it's tough. i still remember the amazement i felt when daechwita dropped. i especially love korean traditional aesthetics too. but, i prefer this song. the lyrics really get me. and the mv is just exactly what i want! that grit and rawness to it, i'm obsessed. i've seen it several times but i can't get enough. i want it to be an actual 2-hour movie. hahaha

  • @isleeptillnoon5256
    @isleeptillnoon5256 Před rokem +7

I thought the same thing, the mv reminds me of a Wong Kar Wai film in how it's shot.
Haeguem, story wise, feels like a sequel to Daechwita to me(the sword in the background of Thief Yoongis' lair, the dragon motifs on his bomber jacket reflect back to the same dragon and sword in Daechwita). The everyday "Man of the people" Yoongi who killed the Mad King/mad self became the Police Chief, who in turn also became as corrupted as the king he killed. The scars around the eye of three of the Yoongis I guess hints at the propensity for darkness/negative predilections of these versions of himself. This scar, a physical manifestation of their desires and ambitions, partially blinds them. Thief Yoongi, also not a "perfect" person but as perfectly flawed as the rest of us, no scar, now has better clarity, definitively puts to rest those past versions of himself, confirmed by the camera panning to the body of dead Police Chief Yoongi (we never saw Mad Kings' body after he was shot in Daechwita).
    Also other things to note....
    - the goldfish in the water dispenser, may also represent him in his life as an idol. He's not free, constantly been looked at. Being in a water dispenser is also an interesting choice, water is life, so life to the fandom, life to himself...? The goldfish is a member of the carp family, carp usually symbolises fighting and overcoming adversity.
    - Thief Yoongi wears a jade bracelet. Jade has an association with wealth and nobility. It can also symbolise serenity, balance and wisdom garnered from tranquillity.
    - The red chopsticks he used to kill, he also uses to eat.
    - Thief Yoongis' gang reminds me of the shadow figures in Interlude: Shadow, but instead of running away from them, his shadows are now what helps him fight and survive.

Suga is such a spiritual person. He so introspective. So deep sometimes that he seems tortured much like many of the great artists over the years. It seems like a heavy burden to carry but he seems to compensate and control these feelings by creating a way to help himself along with others through his music. This needs to be said. So many people are lost and toxic and place their disfunctional burdens and thoughts on others causing depression and destructive behaviors. This goes along with bullying others with negative comments. It can have devastating consequences. Love is much more powerful and moving than hate, so let share love instead and build each other up. The world would be a better place in unity of love.

Eating with the instrument of our murder. Isn’t that all of our curse and prison? If Haegeum is a sequel to the forever killing for former selves in Daechwita, Amygdala, the last of the Agust D trilogy, is a prequel. It is heart wrenching, but also hopeful. It is intense. Heart breaking. But also encouraging given where Min Yoongi is at now.

The way I see it, the corrupted police officer is Daechwita's August D who got absorbed in the same power trip as the blond August D did becoming king. He still has the scar too. And the rebel is Suga/August D that frees himself from the shackls of conformity by attacking the corrupt establishment where it matter the most for them, money. But the scarless August D doesn't care about that money, and that's a liberation. Even before seeing his documentary and all his reflections about life and money and stuff, Suga has often talked about how obsessed he once was about making it and showing it up to the haters, but he had already mellowed out for D-2, and if I remember correctly he said that that's why he was killing blond August D at the end. That's what made me think that this video is more a sequel to Daechwita than just having heavy parallels.
Also, Suga has said even before the release of the album and song that this just might be his last work as August D, so I wonder if him not having the scar as the protagonist is tied to that.
Whatever it is, his works as August D are always such a treat for the ears, eyes and the mind. His lyrics are always amazingly thought provoking even without knowing his thought process when he was writing them, and the producing of the music and the story making and production value of the videos is top notch.
On one side I hope he can feel free to express all the though he has as Yoongi or Suga rather than feeling like he has to have another alter ego in August D to do that, but on the other hand I am going to miss August D if this is his last appeareance.

Finally a prominent k-artist talks about censorship and screw the industry/society. Deliberately puts blood, cigarettes, dark themes, and no seatbelt not just to be edgy but to actually make a critique of censorship. I see him in the video wanting to kill off the corporate, money hungry side of himself that almost takes over the pure artist that he is, a "selling your soul" crisis. Showing the 7 guys then running off and fighting their own solo missions...there is a lot to unpack, even better than Dwaetchita.

    Hope you're feeling better!
What I also took out of Haegum is a sense of taking more responsibility - for what we do, what we think, what we say. Being aware that all of that usually 1) comes from somewhere, 2) goes somewhere, 3) does something. It can come from ambition, compassion, greed, the views media and social media transport to us, etc. It will always go somewhere, be it another thought, an action, spoken words, etc. and eventually reach people in some way or form and do something to them. Indulging in whatever we personally think or do can definitely hurt them, and fleeing into excuses of freedom of speech or "well everyone (online, around me, wherever) does it" doesn't change that.
... but, imo, being aware of that power can also be liberating in a way? We all can change something, as long as we are aware of the why's and who's. Idk the English word for it and it's probably not entirely what he's going for (since this is mostly a wake-up call), but one of the most important concepts I learned about in therapy was the idea of being able to influence my surroundings and circumstances. There's quite a few instances where depression is fueled by the feeling of being unable to do that. It's my main struggle, so I tend to come back to it a lot, and probably why my brain immediately circled back to it with this song.
That, and his commentary on how we as a society are constantly tearing ourselves apart right now, and how that's the furthest thing from freedom... truly resonated haha. I love this album a lot.

I loved this. I felt like the first few opening notes also sounded like Tony Montana, which makes sense given some of the lyrics (becoming a slave to money). You can see the threads he has weaved from his first mixtape through D-2 and now D-day. Amazing 💜Hope you feel better soon.

Appreciation for how informative and authentic your reactions are, I want to commend you on analysing and interpreting the content. You actually understand what's going on and that's saying a lot because most reactors just watch, make a few comments but don't have the insight you have to understand what's going on. Thank you for your perspective :)

Using this channel as a platform to better understand the importance of mental health along with healthy ways to manage one's feelings through music and the video arts is much appreciated. Thank you for this consistently insightful content PD and hoping that your time away is both restful and restorative.

yes I agree, I think the laugh was saying “this won’t actually change anything”, the way that we are stuck in this capitalistic society and it’s a never ending cycle. And the music at the end was saying “well now what will he become” like you said

that being said, when you started and went "i hope agust d can also put a smile on my face" i was so excited and happy for you because i was SURE he would.
also, in case you havent watched it yet but want to, and even though amygdala has a warning at the beginning now, take care of yourself in case you're gonna watch it.

I love both of them, though probably Daechwita a little more because, well, it's the start of all of this. (Also the flow switch in the middle is just PURE FIRE.)
Yoongi's talked about his Shadow being his ambition, the drive to be on top, even potentially at the expense of his health (mental and physical) and relationships. It's what's helped him to succeed, but it's also been the collar around his neck. He's seen massive success, but at what cost? He needs that drive, but he has to be constantly vigilant to keep it from taking him over and driving him to things he doesn't want.
I feel like, with Daechwita, we had the vagabond rebel coming in to restore balance to the land by killing the mad king... Haegeum gives us a new perspective on that story by showing that it was only one chapter of a constant cycle. The corrupt cop may not have started out that way-- perhaps he brought justice initially by taking down a corrupt official. I personally think his chuckle at seeing Agust's gun was recognition-- "I've gone too far again, and now my next iteration is here to take me out." Maybe Yoongi's haegeum is... moderation. He (and BTS) are finding a work-life balance that doesn't require the gruelling pace they've kept themselves to for the last 10 years.

thank you for your reaction. i really like your take on Haegeum, esp the technicalities, the meaning of the song and the message that yoongi wanted to convey. a lot of people, after watching this and some not even, just seeing the screenshots that's been circulating on social media, have thrown hate at him without even trying to dive into the story behind it.
anyway, for a lot of army and others who cared to really "listen" to what yoongi said in this song, we heard him and we understand or at the least, try to understand and relate to it. i think it is criticism to both us and himself, and like you said, a double-edgaed sword.
yoongi just released the MV for AMYGDALA too. i think you would like this MV too, along with the song itself. yoongi's suggestion is to watch Daechwita, Haegeum and Amygdala in one sitting and in that order.
P.S. for me, if you exclude amygdala, i like haegeum just a bit more than daechwita. but out of the 3, because they're connected (you'll see after you watch amygdala even if each of the 3 songs are stand alones) amygdala is my favorite.

Thank you for this reaction. I know you've been both ill and very busy and sad. So stay healthy please.
It is brilliantly shot. Frame by frame. The coloring as you pointed out is very 70's/80's Hong Kong vibe.
I love Suga. The cynical part of me thinks: Telling people not to confuse money with well being and originality seems (at the very least) ironic. This man is a multimillionaire. IF the MV is more about avoiding corruption then ok and yet . . .
Seriously great reaction. The cognitive dissonance in this is the best part of the conflict.

Road to D-Day translated that one line as “the difference between license and liberty” rather than self indulgence, etc.
My idea regarding the bath scene and him throwing the cigarette in order to burn the money-
It combines a scene from Scar Face and a scene from The Dark Knight, two of Yoong’s favorite movies. The bathtub is from Scar Face and burning the money comes at the end of the Dark Knight as the Joker throws a match on a huge pile of money to the chagrin of those present. As the money is burning the Joker says, “It’s not about the money, it’s about the message.”
With Yoongi, it’s always about the message.

I think you're spot on about the 'ominous music' part in the end. In Amygdala he talks about where the scar on his eye comes from, that it's self inflicted, and how he kills off parts of himself that he can't safe. But also how trauma-responses repeat over and over again. In that context the last shot of the video gave me pause as well, where he looks into the camera and his hair kind of reforms the scar on his eye. I think he's talking about repeating cycles here, how now this version could potentially fill the left-open role and become the new 'corrupt' one - and on and on it goes. Also he returns in the police car to the hideout of the cop - those are now his that he took over.
So yeah, I think you caught that quite well. I'm SO looking forward to your reaction and thougths on Amygdala and how it closes off this trilogy.

I hope you check out Amygdala MV too. I think it’s really thought provoking, vulnerable and personal. But maybe take some time first. It’s not a rush. You can decide after you’ve listened to the album.
The MV made me cry but also cathartic as someone who also struggled with mental health.
Yoongi recommended to watch Daechwita, Haegeum and Amygdala in one sitting. But when you get to be in a better place, you may want to check it out.
Always rooting for you! Take care 💜
