Yoongi said to watch Daechwita, Haegeum, and Amygdala all in one sitting. As you see the gansta Agust D doesn't have a scar, unlike Daechwita where both the king and the low class AgustD have a scar on their faces, so it could imply that the detective AgustD in this MV is actually the low class Agust D in Daechwita but now he has also been consumed by greed and power and is being a corrupted detective. The gansta AgustD doesn't have a scar and at the end of the MV you can see he is the head of the police and the gansta (he runs both police and mafia) meaning he accepts all parts of himself, the bad the good, the old the new.

haegeum is an instrument but it also means "to lift a ban". He is playing with the word that means two things. Using the actual instrument in the beat while rapping about the second meaning which is to do things that are forbidden, that prohibit your freedom but he also says this song is just about freeing whats forbidden. however, you should be able to differentiate between freedom and self indulgence.

  • @BridgetteMcCaskill

The haegeum is a traditional Korean string instrument, resembling a vertical fiddle with two strings; derived from the ancient Chinese xiqin; “Haegeum” means “allowing/unlocking something that was forbidden.”

yoongi has tended to make quite political music and i'm glad that he doesn't feel the pressure anymore to conform to what societally is expected of them. something as simple as having a cigarette in your mouth can cause intense backlash and he decided thats why he needed it in the video. he criticises the structure that has enabled his success and he knows he's part of the problem, hence the chopstick scene at the end. he truly is a genius and i admire him for it everytime he releases anything. 🪟🚪

I love this in multiple different ways. I love how the story and MV here ties in with Daechwita. I feel like the parallel stories are another "haegeum" like the two storylines are like two strings. I mean the production, style, colour grading, the plot are all paired. But they have small differences as well. Daechwita had the king, and the historical setting, while also having the modern bits like the car, and the clothing of the non-king Agust D. He took down the king there with the help of the executioner. Then here again the authority figure of the police officer, abusing his power, who gets taken down by the non-scarred version, with the help of his subordinates. It seemed like the dude crouching on the phone at the start is the guy dunking him in the barrel at the end. It's just different time periods. I was kind of seeing it as like the lyrics in Daechwita "I'm the king I'm the boss". First he was the corrupt king, and he killed that version of himself, becoming the boss. And maybe that boss was lost to the same corruption and power and is the scarred police baddie here, who is then destroyed by the tangerine thieving, chopstick abuser. It's all a big violent metaphor for growth and change and ending the previous versions of yourself. A fitting end to the trilogy.
I also love the historical instruments in each song. Not only naming the tracks after traditional music style, and an actual instrument in this case, but the usage of it on the tracks too. Like it truly shows his love of music, and the fact he named the songs after the music style and instrument means literally millions of people will be learning a little bit of Korean history without even meaning to.

Suga (a bona fide freaking genius) has said that D-Day is the third act of the Agust D trilogy. I see this MV as the two guys from Daechwita being reincarnated to repeat their pattern over and over and over. The corrupt cop smirks before he gets shot in the face because he knows they'll be back and this cycle will repeat again. There will always be corruption, and the people will always fight back, and it goes on and on. This is BRILLIANT, Suga is brilliant, and I'm so freaking impressed.

Hey Josh, I am sure someone in the comments already mention the second meaning of Haegum. But also the there is going to be a trilogy of MVs. During the premiere Yoongi said that the next MV being released next week for the song AMYGDALA is going to finish off the series. So he said the watching Daechwita, Haegum, and AMYGDALA in one sitting will be the best way to watch the MVs. I am super curious how he is going to end the series. Especially after reading the lyrics to AMYGDALA I don't know how that MV is going to be.

Agust D is literally talking about everything that is wrong in the world right now. Since haegeum is a traditional instrument but also means liberation of prohibition. He is really asking who's on board for the revolution, for the new world, for the new kingdom and to get on board now. So we can fix everything that is broken. This is a masterpiece. The lyrics and wordplay are incredible. This is what rap in my humble opinion should be. A way of making people aware of all the social, economical issues and more. And Suga just did that. To add further layers to this, it’s really pointed commentary on capitalism or essentially: feudalism. What became his weapon in the beginning (his tool to criticise & stand up) became a utensil. In the end he has to partake in this because of obligation. literally; to feed himself.
A Thailand ARMY (shout out to Sky_hxneul) was kind enough to educate us and explain that this was filmed in Thailand and that place is called the "Thief Market" Rattanakosin Island's (Old name of Thailand from 1782-1892) and it was the first international shoping center in the period after the abolition of slavery.. This is how he explained it : so this market came to exist because the people in the palace freed from slavery when they moved out of the palace, they received some goods from the master and also stole some They then brought those goods to sell them in this area. Now we know that Haegeum is a traditional instrument but also means the liberation of the prohibition.
SUGA: "Haegeum can refer to the traditional instrument but Haegeum as a lift on a ban. In the past, when I was young and I played things like rhythm games, there were songs called "unlocked songs" if you beat a stage, you get the unlocked songs. Idols... Honestly, despite not committing crimes even a little thing becomes this big or doing something that could be considered a controversy, it becomes "Are they allowed to be like that?" I didn't really understand it even when I was young. But of course, that didn't mean I went around causing trouble. So, in the music video, there are smoking scenes and things like that. If this becomes a controversy when l'm 31 then really, as a social phenomenon, it makes me strongly wonder how I'm supposed to accept this. Like, let's unlock those banned things. And since people can see so much information within the palm of their hand, imagining or thinking. Even I started not doing them. So, regarding those things, let's get liberated. With advanced technology, we're able to get all kinds of information and see the situations happening on the other side of the planet while sitting. But I strongly felt those things kind of prohibiting my life actually. I can live without walking on eggshells as much. You have to live doing the things you want."
"Scar dude”, is Agust D. He always has a scar. Representing his own scars. His alter ego, Agust D. He's always portrayed as a villain, a person in power, but nevertheless a villain. He's Suga's opposite side who holds lots of anger, fear, sadness, resentment, vengefulness his darker emotions. Previously in Daechwita, BOTH Suga AND Agust D had scars. He was in a different state of mind, he said he had lots of anger, but here only Agust D has a scar, it's not as red, meaning he's healing, but Suga has none. He's trying to get rid of that side of himself here. And Suga is Suga, himself. It's always been Suga VS Agust D. But he said in IU's palette that he's changed a lot and has learned to forgive and be a happier person, so Agust D can go to rest now. That side of Suga, Agust D, is gone....for now. He says he's not sure when he'll come back....IF he ever comes back, however he said if those strong emotions return, then so will Agust D. It's kind of bittersweet. He said somewhere in the physical album that from this point on, we can expect to see "SUGA"'s debut....not Agust D, but SUGA in his next album.
    So, in order:
First Agust D, blonde and scarred, killed by
Second Agust D, black hair scarred: killed by
Final Agust D is actually Suga, to be continued in Amygdala
I think that is interesting that the original Agust D became the Mad King and the D-2 Agust D became a rich looking cop idk if that's his intention but it very much reads as a critique on corruption by money and power. Especially as he kills them both at the end.

Road to D-Day on Disney has this translated a slightly different way.
“Free for interpretation, BS out! Freedom of expression could be the reason of somebody’s death. Could you still consider that freedom? If you use principles when you adjudicate and speculate, and put your freedom and others on the same level (ie others’ freedom is equal to yours) then don’t hesitate to get on board.”
“Liberation from the forbidden for everybody in this unlucky generation, who can’t even understand their own tastes, this song is about freeing the forbidden,
but don’t forget the difference between “liberty and license. “
[MV translation is “freedom and self-indulgence.” But a couple other translators have said license or licentiousness is a better translation as well. Basically your freedom does not give you a license to do anything you want. You may have the freedom to smoke, but not on an airplane any more due to health reasons of all on board.]
I think the overall theme here is freeing your mind from all the noise we hear on the internet and to be our true self unless that is harmful to another. And that due to the constant barrage of info we consume, it interferes with our own imagination and freedom of thought. We need to move away from internet images and just be us. Let our minds be free. And you know he was talking about giving idols some freedom as well. He spoke about near the end of the Road to D-Day right before he sang Haegeum with a haegeum (the instrument) in the live band.
Did you notice the the huge spiderweb on the little taxi the thief hopped in after he stole the mandarins? World wide web perhaps? He also speaks of capitalism and slaves to money, prejudice etc. And slaves to CZcams. (Lol we got called out!)
That many think the video is like Scarface makes sense. The music video shows what happens when people think they have the license to steal, kill, and have some kind of “illegal lab” perhaps because they are slaves to money and corruption. (What appears to be an illegal lab right after fish bowl at 2:04.). So, we need to free ourselves but not at the expense of others.
Not enough energy to talk much about the scar thing. But I think we need to remember that Agust D, Suga, and Yoongi are all the same person. Briefly I think this shows us that Suga still carries the scars/traumas but they are not as raw. Hence the lighter scar on the police captain. All kinds of layers in this song!

This is a thought provoking song & MV especially when he matched his smoking part in the MV with the lyrics when he said "this song's simply about freeing what's forbidden but you must remember to differentiate freedom from self indulgence". (Smoking among Idols is banned in Sk but it's acceptable to ordinary people.) I think Yoongi also said to watch Daechwita + Haegeum + Amygdala in sequence to get the full experience😊. There have been 4 kpop suicides in a 6 year span, all of which, to some degree, have been caused by cyber bullying. Korea is in the top 2 countries for highest suicide rates. School bullying and violence are extremely common there. Recently BTS has been making comments about ARMY being disrespectful during BTS live streams. The line "Freedom of expression could be the reason for someone's death. Can you still call that freedom?" more than likely alludes to those issues.

To me, the MV shows the never-ending cycle of greed/negativity trying to corrupt us. And every time one version of Agust D is corrupted by it, another version appears to control it/get rid of it. But it is a cycle. It happened in Daechwita it is happening in Haegeum. And this is why The King and The Detective are not scared of being shoot - because they know that in the future the risk of being corrupted might arise once again. But the good thing is, that every time, he still can face it and control it (and he always has someone to back him up/help him). At least this is one of a few interpretations I have for this series.
Oh, and about the violence in MV... I NEED YOU by BTS (the 18+ version) had a very graphic scene of the murder, I don't think we had anything like this since then.

Haegeum is a traditional instrument and AGUST D uses it as a play on words. The other.meaning he uses is "lifting a ban or freeing the forbidden!" You'll catch that in his lyrics. Def Daechwita vibes - mad scar king vs the slave outcast AND Haegeum the social misfit gangster vs the crooked scar cop. He seems to use the money to lure the cop out - for him it wasnt about the money elses why burn it lol he was on a mission lol

I think they have come to realize that they are above the Grammys. They do not need it for validation. They are in control of their careers, and making the music THEY want to make, and not what the western music industry wants them to make. The western music industry has just about alienated themselves from gaining any benefit from BTS. What they do now is for their fans, not awards or the industry. Billboard sh*t on them again (isn’t it funny how they change their rules when BTS is on the top of the charts, and nobody is benefiting from it, except ARMY). I think when we get the full group back, we will not see them making special appearances on tv shows and performing at award shows, knowing they are only being used for clout. And when they win awards, they will not appear on the shows, but simply send a taped thank you. They do that now in Korea, after being treated so bad. I can’t wait to see BTS- Chapter 2: WE CONTROL OUR DESTINY

Hi. This is my take on this. The king from daechwita and Agustd got reincarnated in the present. The king still remains to be a powerful individual in the present. This can be seen when he was coming out of the police station. The police office at the door saluted to him. Agustd in the present seems to be an undercover cop. At first you would think that he's a bad guy but as the mv progresses, you will see that he laid a trap for the reincarnated king. At the end of the video, Agustd was able to defeat the reincarnated king (who is now a corrupt high ranking officer) just like what happened in daechwita. I assumed that the reincarnated king was corrupt because he got pissed when Agustd burned the money he took from the reincarnated king's people. Another proof that Agustd has the role of an undercover cop is the scene at the last part of the mv. He was in a police car but was free to get off of it to eat at a restaurant. Therefore, he is not being arrested but escorted.
As for the song, the words used were very good. I guess he was trying to say that our society is filled with hypocrisy, greed, and jealousy. People only support and believe in things that would benefit them. Our society frowns upon a lot of things (therefore the term forbidden was used). I guess Agustd is saying that it is okay to do such things as long you don't overindulge and hurt others. The real evil people are those like the reincarnated king who use their money or/and influence to benefit themselves even to the point that they are causing harm to society.
In the end Agustd killed the reincarnated king and was supported by the people in scene. I guess Agustd was implying that through his own means (maybe through his songs and good deeds) he will try to fight injustice with the help of the people who agree with his beliefs.
Also the new Agustd doesn't have a scar. I guess this reflects what Suga said in his interview that he has already forgiven those who wronged him in the past. Thus the new Agustd no longer has the scars of the past.
Agustd has transitioned and changed. Perhaps this is the reason why according to Suga, this is the last of the Agustd trilogy.
Well , that was how I interpreted everything, but I may be wrong. LOL.
As for the song, I soooooo love it.

Daechwita - official martial music played when the ruler/his army arrived. Very much a status symbol.
Haegeum - "folksy" instrument, often used to convey very emotional music, also meaning "breaking a ban/permit what is forbidden".
    I like the duality.
Also, BOTH the Mad King and the Rebel Boss in Daechwita had the scar - a lot fresher, red and very visible.
So although some think the dirty cop is the Mad King reborn, many of us see him as the Rebel Boss grown corrupt and a servant of an oppressive system as time went by; a cycle of change and idealistic ideas rising up, being ground into apathy, corruption and greed as they rise to power.
The Joker references could be pointing to the urge to "burn it all down" to enact REAL change?

Everybody's saying Joker but I thought of Daechwita when he came spinning into the courtyard in that car and he was hanging his head out. But I've never seen Joker so maybe that's it. But if it's being tied to Daechwita then it would be that scene for me.
I don't think he was necessarily taking shots at YT, but at people who are caught up in all of that, "flexing". "Endless controversy" and conformity of thought. Think about it. How many people in the world of the internet will step outside of groupthink and say something that isn't popular with a certain group? Not many because of that conformity of thought.

I think at this point BTS is tired of people seeing them as a group that should always sell out. Like the expectations are getting higher and higher each time. Like it is expected that they should always rank #1 in charts, have million views in YT, sell out albums. Some even only wants them to rap and do hiphop songs like they used to. Like they are not allowed to grow and chill.
On their recent group album 'Proof' they clearly mentioned thay they just love and want to do music in general. They didn't even expect thay they'll be this big. They mentioned that they aren't always for numbers and some of their music are just their past experiences or new learnings that they want to share and release as a song.
Reason why Suga mentioned the lines we in general are being slaves for capitalism, money, views, etc.
RM also addressed it on his recent solo album.
If they didn't reach a certain numbers, people will call them flops. If they don't release aggressive songs, people will say they're losing the passion. I feel bad for them.

Rumours have it that a few of the boys do smoke - we have seen pictures of V smoking, so perhaps SUGA also smoke?. I don't care - they are adults - I mean SUGA is 30 years old, but I think it can be a big deal in Korean intertainment. I mean it is still weird that JK has to cover up his tattoos, and that they can't date publicly. I hope that because they all talking about that they want to be free and say and do what they want to - they can push a shift in the Korean entertainment industry.
