+Angus Lamont (AnimateAngus) Agreed. This definitely visually stood out in the film, in a positive way. I'm a big practical effects fan, and it's nice to see them give stop motion a win here!
+Angus Lamont (AnimateAngus) well that's just my point. . modern stop motion is nearly indistinguishable from modern CGI. . lighting in modern CGI has improved to the point it also looks like a real life object. . So it is odd to say that one technique is "far superior" to the other. . when you may not even be able to tell the difference.. . At which point whatever technique is fastest and cheapest should be the main consideration.
+Daniel Tynan CGI is very noticeable when put next to a tangible effect. That's pretty much why in TFA the only two instances of CGI are VERY noticeable and much less seamless compared to the costumes and other elements.
The idea that the game picked up from the last sequence is jaw dropping attention to detail, along with the remake of the pieces/characters and how it was made. All for a few seconds at best of time on screen. Details, it's all about the details. Nice work.
Fascinating stuff. It's really great that they opted to use the traditional stop-motion technique for this scene. Also, the big ogre wearing a tunic looks OP af.
Wonderful to watch, we need the stories of these artists while we still have them, can you imagine having Willis O'Brien here to tell us the story of animating Kong, sadly we cant but it,s a lesson we need to learn to preserve these memories
It was a nice tip of the hat to the original that they used stop motion. However, I will say (and don't kill me for saying this) that this is one sequence where it would have made sense to use CGI, since in the actual Star Wars universe itself, they are digitally rendered creatures displayed through a hologram. But this works too, and clearly these guys are masters at what they do.
It looked better than the 1977's version because that was made at a lower frame rate. Probably 10 fps. This new version it's 24 fps, so it looks more smooth.
I was so thrilled when I saw the film to see they did the claymation style again. I think it's funny that Chewie never picked up playing holochess again after c3p0 'lets him win'.
+bugzkilla I meant that in reply to Mad Cows comment. I'm Implying there was a bit too much "it's like poetry, it rhymes." Not to use Georges quote against JJ or Disney, and obviously they're going to be rich.
Goblin Honey Ah, well of course they had to relate it the the original Trilogy. They also needed to give *spoilers* Han Solo a good send off while introducing new characters ; they did this by giving the audience familiar things while showing them new stuff. 7 is a lot more like the introduction and setup for the audience, 8 and 9 can take it in a different direction and no longer will be tied down.
+Kirby Weldon This is Disney and Star Wars. .you think they are just going to give out their merchandising designs for free?! You better believe they will hold on to EVERY little thing in case it can be used for a McDonalds toy or something.
Star Wars is in a different place now. Back then, we were so excited, but now; not so much. The fanbase is fractured. Our last hope is the Ahsoka show, which it's first two episodes just released, but has led some to believe that even this show won't save the fandom. We will just have to see, once the show is done.
Tippett looks like a real Santa Claus now ! ;-) For the man genius who gave us to see so many wonders on screens since the 70's, it seems quite normal though. Even just for DRAGONSLAYER's Vermithrax and for STARSHIP TROOPERS' bugs, Big Thanks to you, Mr Tippett !
Tony Cross you would be wrong, he suffers from depression and anxiety. come close to ending it all. he loved what he does but its not stress free no worries life by a long shot.
That was so great in the original and yet it was one short scene. Great to see there will be something cool with it in the new movie. -- Amazing they did it in stop motion this time around. It'd be great if they release a figure set and game.
wwaxwork If I were trying to be cool wouldn't I claim that I liked it? It is apparently very popular although I have no idea why. The entire plot line was made up of plots from the old movies. There was nothing original.
You got me there, it was better than the prequels. A turd is better than the prequels. As for a formula there was none. You've got a droid with a bit of vital information stuck on a desert planet with storm troupers chasing it. It gets briefly captured by a small alien then rescued by a future Jedi who knows nothing about the force. The bad guy is related to one of the good guys. They go to a cantina seeking safe transport. They escape from the desert planet in the Millennium Falcon. Han Solo doesn't want to get involved. There's a giant laser gun that destroys planets. They have to destroy the gun to prevent the destruction of the rebellion. In order to destroy the gun they have to take down the shields. then the X-wing pilots fly along a trench filled with gun turrets. Most of the pilots die. Then they have to fly inside the gun to blow it up. One of the hero's even gets captured and tortured. Did I miss anything? I have no problem with call backs to previous episodes but you have to add to the story. The only thing new that I can think of is there was a storm trouper who switched sides and he dies.
Would have been cool to come in with a shot-plan similar to the one animator's and presuming you couldn't use the Star Wars characters use some other characters to create something rough in about an hour. Should have been able to get 5-10 seconds of something.
+ej sese Don't look at any old movies then, you have no idea the amount of hours for each shot, completely useless, not even a franchise was born out of that kind of passion for creating, or anything.
Phil is true legend in special effects, glad to see his magic to this day.
Tippett, McQuarrie, Ben Burtt, John Dykstra, John Williams...Maaaan Star Wars had some geniuses in it!
+Sebastian Acha yup, yup..along with denis muren, ken ralston, joe johnston and a bunch of others
Richard edlund, Dennis murren, Charles Lippincott, ❤
You can tell Adam was giddy to be there for this one.
Since I was a kid I've been obsessed with the holo chess scene. I dream of the day I can actually play this at home.
+Shooty Deluxe Me too best part
Santa Claus does amazing stop-motion animation!
+TheVaultMaster He gives gifts greater than just a physical present.
I was just going to say that!
He got the touch he the Power yeah! 😅💯
Nice! Glad to see "old-school" techniques can still come into play
and to see some of the original ILM artists as part of the team
so cool!

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens full onlen free!!!
Fantastic that stop motion creature effects are coming back! Fed up seeing CG stuff.
+Angus Lamont (AnimateAngus) As if you could tell the difference. . .
Daniel Tynan Yep, you'd be surprised at how far stop motion has come. I've seen some stop motion tests that look far superior to CG creature effects.
+Angus Lamont (AnimateAngus) Agreed. This definitely visually stood out in the film, in a positive way. I'm a big practical effects fan, and it's nice to see them give stop motion a win here!

Nice to know it was done practically :)
The hologram effect done in the film made me think it was fully CG.
It was awesome to see this return in the new movie.
Nice job, ILM, for making CGI characters of these guys animating these creatures in stop motion. I'm totally sold!
Im glad to see star wars revert back to stop motion and practical effects!
The idea that the game picked up from the last sequence is jaw dropping attention to detail, along with the remake of the pieces/characters and how it was made. All for a few seconds at best of time on screen. Details, it's all about the details. Nice work.
Now that is the kind of Tested video I like!
It's crazy how much work goes into making a few seconds of film.
Lot of respect for guys who do stop motion, it would drive me crazy
LOVE IT! Star Wars will always be linked with stop motion! What a fine art it is!
I loved seeing these guys. They need to come out with a licensed chess set with these guys.
Adam is a huge part of my childhood. You will always be the coolest 50+ year old guy on earth.
Congrats Tested for doing an actual Force Awakens BTS video!! You guys are now the biggest of the big-time.
please make it a real holographic game so I can give you my money.
+Joseph Madera You can bet this Starwars holochess game will come out for Microsoft`s Hololens glasses at some point
+Dibby Silvia Thanks for the VIRUS buddy
+Joseph Madera they should make a Star Wars game like GTA or Red Dead Redemption with mini games like Holo chess in it.
Fascinating stuff. It's really great that they opted to use the traditional stop-motion technique for this scene. Also, the big ogre wearing a tunic looks OP af.
4:30 norm's being a creepy stalker in the background xD
LOL!
Wonderful to watch, we need the stories of these artists while we still have them, can you imagine having Willis O'Brien here to tell us the story of animating Kong, sadly we cant but it,s a lesson we need to learn to preserve these memories
I love that they did it in stop motion!!
How come nobody's ever made a Dejarik video game?
There’s a VR one now!
this is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see!! ahhhhh so cool to hear how they work!!
You can tell by their "enthusiasm" for Adam's questions that they are animators.
Ok that was TOO much of a treat, thanks a mil for uploading this section, adored it.
It was a nice tip of the hat to the original that they used stop motion. THIS IS SO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! Cool behind the scenes bit. Love the stop motion animation.
It looked better than the 1977's version because that was made at a lower frame rate. Probably 10 fps. This new version it's 24 fps, so it looks more smooth.
Thanks for posting. I would love to see the chess pieces up close and what a great nod to the original Star Wars.
I was so thrilled when I saw the film to see they did the claymation style again. I think it's funny that Chewie never picked up playing holochess again after c3p0 'lets him win'.
Another win for the new Star Wars!
Wow this must have cost a fortune for that one short shot. Expensive!!
sadly it didnt get much screen time
Well, it was more of a tribute to the original trilogy then a real playing scene.
+Mad Cow Rebel Perhaps the same could be said of all the scenes.
+Goblin Honey That's when you know they did pretty good. I agree, I wanted to see more of every scene in the movie.
They also needed to give *spoilers*

Just incredible! Videos like these are why I love Tested so very much!
Longest Video Game placed on Pause of all time 30 years!
I hope to see more of this in episode IX
Phil Tippett RULES!!!!
Oh god please release the 3d models so I can make molds.
+Kirby Weldon It would also be cool, for whem Hololens release people could do a real Holochess
+Kirby Weldon I would love it.
+Kirby Weldon This is Disney and Star Wars. .you think they are just going to give out their merchandising designs for free?! You better believe they will hold on to EVERY little thing in case it can be used for a McDonalds toy or something.
+Daniel Tynan And not even used a decent mold
Beautiful work.
Adam, awesome to see ya.
I loved that Tippets called it the El Kabong!
Awesome report!!! Totally thought it was CGI!
I loved the holochess scene in A New Hope
that moment when Chewie noticed Finn accidentally turning the game board on. the feels.
I watched it 4 times and loved it
"More dinosaur please" was my 2YO daughter's response.
Well done. More of this from @Tested, please!
I haven't seen the movie yet but this was so good I don't care.
Star Wars is in a different place now. Back then, we were so excited, but now; not so much. The fanbase is fractured. +Tony Cross Sounds like it is the best way to live a stressless life and to just enjoy what one likes.
Tony Cross you would be wrong, he suffers from depression and anxiety. come close to ending it all. he loved what he does but its not stress free no worries life by a long shot.
Phil Tippet, you were the dinosaur supervisor in jurassic park! *WHERE WERE YOU?!?!*
Phil would make a great santa
I'd like to see these peaces get replicated for the masses.
YOU HAD ONE JOB PHIL!
I'm imagining a heist movie where 3 stop - motion animators sneak into George's office to retrieve the creatures.
Is being low-energy like these guys required to do stop-motion? Adam could never do that. :D
Gibby was talking about using kinesthetic sense. Neat
When I saw the chess pieces in the new Star Wars I was like AWSOME!!
Phil Tippett is a badass.
That was so great in the original and yet it was one short scene. Great to see there will be something cool with it in the new movie. -- Amazing they did it in stop motion this time around. It'd be great if they release a figure set and game.
I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THESE MONSTERS
The like button just isn't enough. Awesome video! It takes me back to when I watched Movie Magic as a kid.
I like these guys. It would probably drive me crazy to work with the though.
I noticed it looked like the same effect :D!!!
I still blame Phil for the who dinosaur park debacle. you had one job Phil Tippet!
So awesome!
Adam, you must do a spoiler cast ASAP! I absolutely have to know your thoughts on the film, and this video while as cool as it was just isn't enough!!
11:11 Yes Adam, they will notice if one is missing....
I watched the original movie the other day. I never payed any attention to the chess game in the past, but I notice this time it's kinda like Pokémon.
holy crap Phil Tippet is like a mountain man now
Great job
RESPECT!!!!! RESPECT!!!! RESPECT!!!!
Thanks for the spoiler alert. Ill be back to watch the video once I've seen the movie!
+mthlay15 You've already seen it. It was just a copy of the other six films.
+POVadventure Congratulations on figuring out how to complain.
wwaxwork If I were trying to be cool wouldn't I claim that I liked it? It is apparently very popular although I have no idea why. The entire plot line was made up of plots from the old movies. There was nothing original.
POVadventure STOP TRYING TO SOUND EDGY! The film was sooooo much better than the prequels! If you don't like the formula of the movie... FUCK OFF!

I love this :) cannot wait to see it again, will defently be more focused on the board 2nd time around :)
damn i want to see a stand alone short movie based on this monster chess game.
so awesome
that's so cool
Would have been cool to come in with a shot-plan similar to the one animator's and presuming you couldn't use the Star Wars characters use some other characters to create something rough in about an hour. Should have been able to get 5-10 seconds of something.
holy shit it's Phil Tippet
The animators are the amazing Chuck Duke & Tom Gibbons.
+Dan Pawlak Chuck Duke is an amazing stop motion animator. He's been at it since 1986 starting at Will Vinton Studios.
Let me buy them. They should make a set of these.
this is a lot of work for something that was on screen for like 7 seconds
+ej sese every single frame in Star Wars took a lot of months to make. it's the job of hundreds of people. this is just one more of these jobs
+ej sese
Don't look at any old movies then, you have no idea the amount of hours for each shot, completely useless, not even a franchise was born out of that kind of passion for creating, or anything.
+ej sese At least it wasn't cut. :)
Dimitri Bitu lol im late but its not hundreds of ppl its just all the crew members haha
Great stuff that deserves better than the crap excuse of a sequel trilogy.
Holy crap! Phil Tippett is totally unrecognizable! They look like Santa Claus now.
Oh no! Careful! Wasn't Phil the Dinosaur Supervisor in Jurassic Park? You had one job...
We haven't forgotten your mistake with the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, Phil. People died, Phil...
08:25 Anyway know what kind of smart watch flashes onto the bottom right corner of the screen @ 08:25 ?
I'm surprised that they didn't shoot it on a green screen set-up for the composite. (blue screen- or what ever screen wasn't worn by the characters)
Did everyone take notes on the names of the different pieces?
I've never knew Santa is an animator
Arent thoes pointers you use old diplayes for pocket watches?
i've notice most of the scene on awaken were taken from episode iv
Wow! Phil Tippett is really old.
Please tell me how a magician does his tricks. Please. I will not rest until I know every last one. Only then can I enjoy magic.
AMAZING!! 😄 😄
I didn't know Santa worked on Starwars!
i want this to be a real game.
