    I still have my dad’s tricorder! One of his favourite stories was about when a student came into his shop to ask about what type of metal a part was.
    So Dad- already recognizing the metal- pulls out his tricorder and hits a few buttons, beep boop whirlwhirl and goes “ah, that is a type 316 stainless steel!”
    The student then wore a huge grin and turned to leave. Apparently he had never seen a tricorder before because he thought it was all real 😭 my dad had to chase him down and explain it was just a toy so he didn’t eagerly tell the superiors about a magic metal analyzer he had. I don’t think they had portable XRF metal analyzers in the 1980s, so that must’ve been wild
    Love you lots, Dad

      There was a Next Gen episode where two Klingons were beamed aboard supposedly without weapons, but once in private they both took parts from a belt-buckle, a tip from a boot, etc and put together a couple of assassin weapons. I’d like to see the separate parts for that machined. Even on camera the prop looked extra cheesy, but this guy could improve on that I’m sure.

    I love the Cobra Phaser, There were two versions of that design. The version shown here was made early on in the show, but by TNG's season 6 through to DS9's third season and Voyager's first season, it didn't have the markings on it and the power level meter was removed, which I believe was due to battery power considerations as this was before the prop redesign.
    As for Geordi's VISOR, We did see the inside, though not in detail, in "Starship mine" when Dr. Crusher was modifying it to emit a hypersonic pulse. And we only saw mesh used behind the brass pins at least ONCE in the second season which is when the all-metal version of the prop was produced. The first season was literally a heavily modified banana clip which you can tell because of the pins alternating between the upper and lower frame.

    • @Jastor00
      @Jastor00 Před 22 dny +1

      I agree. The Cobra Phaser is a decent representation of the earlier version with the softer lines and power meter. Depending on the price, it might be worth snapping up!

    • @julia.h3673
      @julia.h3673 Před 20 dny

      I've never been able to get over the banana clip aspect of Geordi's visor, and always imagined the silly conversations in the prop department must have gone something like guys saying, no one will ever notice, and then a woman walks by and says hey, nice banana clip hahaha!, but then the guys held firm, yeah, no one will notice. (that imagined convo is all said with love, but the visor is a banana clip and always will be in my eyes).

    I know the story why tricorders make the click sound... And its because the season 1 prop did have a mechanical arm mechanism that made the click sound. But the sound engineers for the show hated it so it was removed.
    But they took samples of the click and then added it into post then on.

    The discussion about glossy finishes reminded me of something that became visible on TNG once it was out in Blu-Ray high def. You can now see that sheets of black construction paper was often taped over portions of glossy instrument displays on the walls to eliminate reflections of studio lights. I had never noticed this on TV, but once you know where to look, it really jumps out at you. With high-def, you also notice stains on the carpet, reflections of boom mics, extension cords peeping out from behind props, etc. If you don't want to be distracted by that stuff, I suggest avoiding any "The Next Generation Mistakes" videos like the one on Red Letter Media.

      I've noticed the big sheets of black cardboard in the 90s when I watched the season 2 episode with the mock battle between the Enterprise and Hathaway. Another thing I've noticed back with the DVD version was in the episode where Riker and Worf beam to a fake Yamato and Worf gets angry and forces a door open on the bridge, and you can see the wood grain on the door even in SD. But with the Blu-Ray these details are really more and more obvious. (They've stopped using the black cardboard in later seasons when they overhauled the lighting.)

      @@klopferator I had a crappy enough small TV when I first watched TNG that I never noticed. Then again, I never thought to look.
      I grew up watching Ultraman and Thunderbirds and never noticed the strings, so maybe I just tended to ignore the background and details. It is interesting how many previously unnoticed fine details tend to jump out at me from higher definition copies of old favorites. Once I notice something, my brain will start looking for it again.

      I got my first blu ray player as a gift last year and jave been thoroughly unerwhelmed by the experience. Most discs don't have any way to save your watch progress, so I have to write down the timestamp if I have to turn it off in the middle, the higher resolution makes most things - _especially_ legacy media - look far worse and the 60fps gives me eyestrain and nausea.
      I'll stick to the lower resolution dvds thanks.

    31:00 While the constant whine/sound is a VERY cool touch of for this replica, if these are getting sent to the show for potential on-screen use, there needs to be an option to shut that off. The sound guys would absolutely lose their minds trying to figure out where that's coming from. While watching them go crazy could be fun on its own, that's a good way to keep them in a box in a closet instead of getting them in an actor's hands.

    It’s funny, as a child of the 80s, the TOS props do nothing for me, they look silly and retro, but the TNG props - they look like *the future*! even though they too are dated now. These objects defined so much of my aesthetic sensibility. The future would be warm, human, ergonomic, and more civilian feeling. A future where design and usability were every bit as important as engineering. I remember reading about the tricorder display in the Technical Manual and imagining how it would work with those Geology, Meteorology, Biomedical buttons. It’s interesting how we imprint so strongly onto these objects that we first saw as kids.

I still love the items you shows in the video but my two favs from TNG will always be Worf's bat'leth and Sash he wore into battle, not the one (if I remember correctly) he mostly wore to honor his family the House of Mogh.

    About a decade ago, I got to handle a prototype of Geordi's visor in the collection of the son of fabricator John Lilly (RIP). John was hired to fabricate what was very similar to the final version, and, yes, those brass rods were incredibly difficult to manage, and the prototype was a very rough version, with the final iterations all going over to the folks working directly on the show.
    John also worked on sculpts of the TNG communicator badge, and there were multiple prototype versions, all in pretty rough shape, too. From talking with his son, it seems like Lilly was hired mostly as a fabricator/machinist, and had little or no role in designing any of the original props.
    But it was very cool to handle them, especially the visor.

    On the whole oxidation and knights armour thing. There is a reason we have the term "blackmail". Because a sporting armour that would get beat up like hell, and was exposed to a lot od weather and travel, would be a nightmare to keep shiny. So it was often blackened and not polished. And if you won the armour of someone in a turney beating them, well then you could sell it back to them. Blackmailing them.
