We don’t need 11 Fire Emblem characters... 11 Zelda characters however... yes. The Zelda series sells 10 times the amount of games that FE does. It’s simple maths on who should be the picks. With 1 offs from 3rd parties sprinkled in.
@@comedycommenter5714 1, no shit most of us want the characters mentioned. 2, some of us like FE & do want other characters from it...we get it, you don't like FE, grow up & move on already....
A bit. While we don't know specifically, Sakurai was given options and that is what he chose. I'd say at this point while we don't know the details it could be a mix of the blame for the decision.
Dark Death47xxx (if it was a joke dont woosh me i got it) but if it wasnt a joke the original commentor wasnt saying sakurai should get fired. they were quoting the idiots who said that
Nintendo gave him about 15 options and he picked 5 of them. If sakurai didn’t want another fire emblem character, we wouldn’t have gotten one. Edit: This is not me saying I think sakurai should be fired. I dont care that we got another fe character. Just pointing out a fact that yes, sakurai does control the dlc to a certain extent and he did have the power to not include another fe character.
@@BigFearedBalloon He was given characters and accepted them if he could make them work. As far as we know, there's nobody he rejected, so Nintendo just gave him five, he said they can work, that's it.
FE fans: Yes! Someone is actually talking about Byleth rationally. 10:50 Aaronitmar: It’s cool that you can use an axe, a staff, a bow FE fans: Did he just call a lance a staff?
@@thatgirlinamask8699 The weapon type for polearms (pointy sticks) in FE is Lance, but there are specific spear weapons (they're the stronger range 1-2 lances).
@Charles Ruteal yes, I was just mocking those who had not played the games, I know the typing, and that there are lances, spears, scythes, etc under the typing But thank you :)
Aurelio Deprimus In FE games however, a staff would be a magical weapon that the priest class would use. Staffs are typically for healing but can be used for teleportation and silencing. If it was any other series, then “staff” could be accurate. But with FE, it’s just confusing.
"Byleth gets revealed" Fire Emblem Haters: Nobody likes this guy. Fire Sakurai he doesn't care what the fans like. Game Awards 2019: Players Choice Game of the Year goes to... Fire Emblem Three Houses
Byleth reveal would be even "better" if it was in the game awards, just imagine Sakurai: BYLETH FOR SMASH Smash fans: NOBODY LIKE THIS GAME Game Awards 2019: So... the favorite game of the year by the voice of players is Fire Emblem Three Houses Smash fans: Surprised pikachu face
Honestly it's probably just a minority saying Sakurai should be fired and probably more shouting about those types of people. But I think this was a bad move on Sakurai's part, mainly due to repeating pretty much the same mistake as Corrin. Enough to where we should do some criticism at least. Like how Modern Kirby is barely represented in Smash, Nintendo Franchises being ignored for Fire Emblem in Smash etc. Personally I don't like the idea of treating Sakurai as a "God" but as a hard working person who works with a team and that person can have flaws and biases (like him choosing the DLC roster with some bias picks like Joker and Terry). But he should be trying to understand the community for what they want for DLC (since they are paying for the DLC) and maybe this next Fighter's Pass is him looking at what people have been talking about, and decided on the roster based on that. At least that is what I hope for. and also a bit of Nintendo can take the blame but we don't know how specifically the roster was chosen.
I think byleth is a gift for sakurai, who worked very hard developing smash for years. Since he's a big fan of FE, if this character released his stress and fulfilled his passion to continue making smash, I think this is meaningful. Though, I can't deny that I disappointed about release of another FE guy.
The plant was more "Wait. WHAT?!" and Byleth was simply "despise of FE and swords" for this -dumb- GREAT fandom. Even Sothis said so: "What, too many swordies? And you, you wield a sword as well!" And Sothis is voiced by Morgana, and you can't hate Morgana. Or you'll be forced to sleep. Forever.
The reason why Byleth had to be the last character of the fighters pass was because Sakurai and his team needed more time to work on the character as Three Houses was still new. While it is true that Sakurai does get access to games early to get a feel for the character, there is no way he got by late 2018. He probably got an early copy of Three Houses 1 month before it's big release date. Because by then everything about the game was being finalized. And looking at Greninja and Corrin who were also characters from very recent games you notice that there is a 6 month gap between their game's release date to their smash reveal. Just like Byleth. So if Sakurai and his team wanted to accurately make Byleth and the Garreg Mach stage true to their source game then they couldn't release him so early in the fighters pass. Had Three Houses been out in early 2019 then yeah Byleth could have been added much earlier. I do hope that Sakurai talks more about this in an interview to shed some light on the situation. Much like how he explained why Corrin was added.
@@ToastyBeruka also let's be honest most people already bought the pass at this point so releasing the character as the last fighter of the pass means its not gonna be much risk of loosing sales for the hype factor this fighter pass
It's possible he did get an early copy then as the game was supposed to release in 2018 before being delayed. They probably waited until 3H was released before releasing Byleth so they wouldn't end up with another Corrin situation
@@cubriffic172 The thing is with Corrin was that Fates was already out in Japan by then. It was only the west that got Corrin in Smash before Fates released. That's why it felt more like an advertisement for westerners. And while that could be true we sadly don't know how far in development Three Houses was until it got delayed. I'm mainly going off of him getting 1 month before release is because there's always the chance that Intelligent Systems could end up changing certain things regarding Byleth and Three Houses during the final stages of development. Causing Sakurai to end up making Byleth and his stage on outdated information that doesn't reflect the final game. That is if he got the game very early.
I just want to point out, "Hoes Mad" had very little to do with Hero being included at all. When Hero was added, most people though the character looked fun and unique, but a lot of people said that the character was bad for competitive play. These people, many of whom actually like the character, made cries to ban the character in competitive play. Hoes Mad was a response to the calls to ban, and had nothing to do with people being mad about the inclusion. If I remember correctly, while some people were disappointed at the beginning of E3, after Banjo was announced in the same direct, no one disliked either of the editions, because everyone got at least one character they liked.
Yeah, I don't remember a large group of people getting mad about the inclusion of Hero into Smash, a lot of people (including me) had no idea who he was, but were still excited to get a new character in Smash. Only reason people were mad was because he had RNG.
There were still a significant amount hating on Hero and Terry. But certainly not near this amount. But it's still important to know that there were still disappointed people before Byleth.
I think Fire Emblem has that many fighters because it is a game about characters. Mario is a game about levels and power-ups, that is why it has the most amount of stages and most items from the Mario series give you a temporary power up (like the Super/Poisoned mushroom, the Tanooki leaf and the Super Star). Pokémon is a game about monsters, that is why the Pokéball item exist. Simmilar to that, Fire Emblem games are about interacting with various character and controlling them on the battlefield. Since they only have a few slots and can't get every character from a game in there, they represent all units with the player character (which almost always ends up as a generic looking swordsman/woman).
Alpharad made a good point about this. Smash actually is insanely balanced when you actually look at EVERY aspect than just fighter numbers. But because most think of For Glory first, they only care about characters, movesets and the one new stage.
You make a good point friend. Something I often hear people say is that we have 4 Marth clones so it's ridiculous that FE has so much representation. Sadly, that's simply because of the nature of Ultimate. "Everyone is here" means everyone. From game to game Smash changed the secondary FE characters to promote their new FE games. Shallow? Maybe, but for a niche (at the time) series like FE that was the only way to keep interest in their reps. However, getting all of them in one game is a little much. The solution was echo fighters, and with newer FE character as the series has grown in popularity the reps have been unique and interesting. So people can chill with the "too much FE" talk. We have Robin, Corrin, Byleth, Ike, and 4 Marth skins. Calm down
@@brucewayne3295 Even among the "four Marths," they play differently. Roy is good at being in your face, Marth it's better to stand back a bit, and Chrom and Lucina are Roy and Marth but more flexible in how you play them (in my opinion)
@@brucewayne3295 Plus Awakening basically resurrected the franchise (especially in the West) so while having 3 reps from that game is a bit excessive, it's also kind of understandable in a way. I don't agree with it since 2 of them are echoes but I understand why they did it
A lot of haters were like, "If Sakurai loves Fire Emblem so much, then make a Fire Emblem game." And. Well. Not only do I want him to make a Fire Emblem game. I actually *would* like it if Smash had series-specific spin-offs. I'd love a Smash game with nothing but Zelda characters.
I feel like part of the issue is that all the characters added have been protagonists which should not be the case. The other franchises with tons of reps have villains like Bowser, Bowser Jr., and Piranha Plant for Mario. Ganondorf for LoZ. Mewtwo is even somewhat of a villain for the Pokemon franchise. Not to mention the fact that the protagonists from FE all look really similar (with the exception of Roy, Robin, and Corrin). I think the best solution for this would be to add just one FE rep in the next Smash game and have it be a villain like the Black Knight.
@@drakejoshofficialyoutubech5569 It would be a huge pain tho, considering how almost every FE game has its own unique set of characters and stories. Although I would love to see one of the villains appear in Smash one day
@@kittycatty8336 I feel like the characters that would have been better received are assist trophies. Like Lyn and Dark Knight just seem like cooler characters than the bland protagonists that all look similar. Plus I just want a full fledged heavy sword character, they gave us a taste of what that is like with Ganon's smash attacks, but we have yet to see a character that fits that description, and maybe that's because it would be broken idk. And this is coming from someone who isn't even a Fire Emblem fan, I just feel like the choices for reps is the issue and not the number of reps itself.
Personally I'm a little bit bummed with Byleth, simply because Fire Emblem has never been a series that has appealed to me much. In a similar vein, I had no love for Persona, Dragon Quest, or King of Fighters, but since these were all new series being represented, I was still happy to see them. Since we already have a ton of Fire Emblem, it just made me feel a little bit "eh". That being said, Byleth does look pretty fun, so I'm not really angry, just mildly disappointed.
I'm exactly the same way as you, since Banjo and Kazooie were the only DLC characters I was ever actually excited about seeing in "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate", and I would have seen some other character like Sash Lilac from "Freedom Planet" become playable instead.
I'm pretty similar, but in the opposite way. Joker and Byleth are the only two characters I could care about since I love their series. Banjo and Kazooie, Terry Bogard, and Hero I couldn't care about. I have played Banjo before, but it was so long ago and not for long, so I have no nostalgia riding on him. Hell, if I was a less lethargic person, I wouldn't even know who the hell Terry is, or Geno for that matter. I first thought the Geno people wanted was from One Punch Man. That's how unknown the Mario RPG game was to me beyond being the precursor to the original two Paper Marios. Hell, Fire Emblem has almost as many unique characters as Pokemon has unique pokemon- depending on if 'regional' variations are counted. Even so, it's well into about 600 or so.
Personally I feel like including Byleth as the last character in this pass was what hurt. Switch the timing of his reveal with Banjo would have a complete opposite reaction
I think the backlash would have been bigger then, with Three Houses not being released and showing it's pros of a good game. It was bad decision either way deciding on including Byleth for DLC before Three Houses released and making the same mistake as Corrin. I think the better choice would have been, ok we will decide to do Byleth either in Pass 2 (where it would show Byleth got in due to how positive Three Houses was) or for the next Smash game. But the huge roster of Fire Emblem doesn't help matters either.
BoardGameSwede the timing was definitely what was bad, and people thought Reggie said Third Parties only/New Series to smash but I can kinda understand why Fire Emblem gets so much hate; it gets milked way too goddamn much compared to Zelda in Smash, and that’s why people despise Fire Emblem, regardless of what they are. I agree Fire Emblem gets too much attention in Smash, and most of the characters are just clones, but Sakurai is a big FE fanboy, so whatever.
Actually, something I actually tought about was that since Fire Emblem has its fans too, I can imagine there's people out there who're actually exited about Byleth, since preety much everyone tought Fire Emblem wouldn't get any character ever again due to its sheer amount of characters, so we were preety much stuck with Corrin, who many people don't seem to like too much(from both within and outside the fanbase), instead of a rep from 3H, which many people actually liked, and technicly, even if a lot of people found them underwhelming, they were unexpected in that regard, since we preety much fabricated a "no Fire Emblem" law, one that Sakurai didn't have to follow, and didn't follow when a lot expected him to do so; I would also say they were unexpected in the sense that after four "unexpected third party" characters, everyone was expecting an "unexpected third party", but we got the total oposite, which was unexpected... (was it a smart decision to be a FE char is up to debate, but the general consenses is that it wasn't, even coming from those who liked it) well that was confusing...
I was actually hyped for a whole day after Byleth was revealed, and I'm never hyped for Smash characters, even ones that I like like Joker or Ridley. Having played almost every FE in the series, I was pretty disappointed with the characters from the series in Smash and how boring they (almost) all were. Four Marth (semi)clones is just too much, man. Plus, axes and lances are just as important as swords in FE, if not more, so why did they give everyone just swords? Especially Ike, who can use axes! Still, I understand and sympathize with people who were disappointed by the reveal. Getting another blue (debatably) haired avatar from FE must have seemed awful... That said, I will always stand by Byleth's addition to Smash. They deserve to be in Smash, although not as much as Dimitri or Edelgard.
@@OrangePikachu1998 I actually did want Claude, one of the few ha ha. If only Sakurai used his part 2 design. Imagine a wyvern rider with a bow and lance in Smash bros, with the wyvern for general attacks and lance/bow for specials. But at least Byleth has Failnaught and the other Relics.
@@KGDavis-fi2tq I wish wyverns and horses were easy to translate to Smash, but they will never be. It's the main reason why I didn't hold my breath for Claude as DLC...
Luis Rodrigo Paniagua wrong. Byleth was somewhat actually expected, since Nintendo is super biased towards Fire Emblem in Smash cause Byleth and the other Fire Emblem reps were just added for blatant advertising when Three Houses was already out. I find it hilarious how Rex from Xenoblade 2 was excluded because he came out too late.
@@seenl6eight258 considering ARMS is getting a representative after being skipped for similar reasons, a second xenoblade character isnt too far from being possible, although I personally would prefer either Fiora or Morag.
Calling the Byleth reaction "crazy" is a massive understatement, to say the least. People acted like it was the death of Smash Bros. Drama to the Smash communtiy is as common as the general lack of hygiene at at tourny. Nintendo absolutely set themselves up for outrage from fans by saving Byleth for last. If they revealed them early on, the backlash wouldnt have been as severe. It would still have happened, absolutely. Just not to the degree as we saw. That being said. Smash fans really need to learn to calm the hell down. Byleth is not the end of the world, seriously. It's ONE character. Fire Emblem isn't even the most represented franchise in Smash. That belongs to Mario, with Pokemon as a second. Hell, swordfighters only take up 15 of the 75 currently on the roster with Byleth's inclusion. So, which is the real issue? Too many swordies? Too many Fire Emblem? Pick one, not both. Neither are valid mind you, but pick a gripe at stick with it. The hypocrisy is almost as annoying as the general whining about DLC not catering your specific wants.
The "to many Fire Emblem characters" argument most likely comes from people who aren't into/never played Fire Emblem (like me) not really caring for their inclusions. This doesn't mean that I'm pro-Smash Bros Ultimate hating or anything.
The too many FE characters argument is valid but it doesn't mean people have to harass Nintendo employees through twitter, atleast separate criticism with people attacking and whining over to Sakurai in twitter atleast
@UCc6-z-I46uE_Wjp19UZHMJg I can assure you, no one complains about "too many Pokeballs in Smash." People only care about whether a character is competitively viable or not. 😆
I agree on what you said that every character with the exception of Joker and kinda Banjo and Kazooie had hate towards them, even Plant got hate. So people saying that everyone loved the fighters pass before Byleth are wrong because even these character got shitted on.
Plus, Plant got a tiny bit of extra hate when some hated that if you didn't buy Smash right away, you suddenly had to pay for him so you were getting less content for the same price three months later.
hating byleth is justified but hating banjo doesn't make any sense. it's a third party character that was highly requested for years for godsake! one simply isn't a smash fans if they aren't happy about banjo's inclusion...
As someone who played Three Houses as their introduction to the series, and already got the two out of three dream choices in Smash, Byleth was the first FE character that I was excited to see, even if the decision to end the pass with them left a little to be desired. To the people who were disappointed or straight up hate Byleth or FE in general, just remember, there are 6 more slots after this, and heaven knows what could happen after that.
I mean, I don't think we'll get ANOTHER Fire Emblem character right? I'm not mad about Byleth, but if we get another Fire Emblem character, then I may get a bit salty...
@@wagnarok8376Dont worry Sakurai stated he is kinda worried about to many swordfighters/FE characters are because Nintendo choose the DLCs not him, even FE acknowledges this they are worried too about FE representants I mean, in my opinion, Corrin and Chrom were kinda unnecesary Ike was in Brawl Roy was in Melee, i think he didnt need an Echo Lucina could have his own moveset but i think the point it was in awakening she passed as Masked Marth
"and heaven knows what could happen after that" well start calling me Heaven, because i already know what will happen: a gen 8 pokemon and another FE3H character as the final dlc
I could say the same about Hero or Terry. Then I actually looked into their characters and the games they're and from and pretty much started to absolutely love 'em.
The FE criticism probably just came from how many FE characters we got in such a short time, where many other franchises with this many characters had built up to that number over time. In Smash 4, we jumped from 2 FE characters all the way to 6, with Ultimate making a jump to 8 right after that. Other franchises, like Mario or Pokemon, slowly built up to their current total over the course of the series, which is most likely why people haven't gotten sick of those franchises in Smash like they have with Fire Emblem.
it just depends on how the information is distributed. so my question still stands on why on earth did nintendo think it was a good idea to reveal byleth this late at the end of all of these 3rd party characters with franchises never once appeared in smash.
When Byleth was 1st revealed I was upset because I thought Sakurai said they would only have 3rd party characters. Then I rewatched the reveal from reactions from people like Aaronitmar and Failboat and realized I was upset because it was a fire emblem character and realized the move set is unique and Sakurai doesn't deserve the negativity he's getting.
@@PulseAnimations878 I thought it sounded Reggie said it would be characters from new series (not necessarily third-party, just in general), but I could be mixing things up.

2:48 I think the problem is exactly this. You CAN take his entire moveset on an entirely different character with almost no changes and it works. And since people wanted a character from a franchise with little to no representation in smash, having one from the third most represented one with a moveset that could have been on a character they wanted, it's seen like adding insult to injury. I'm pretty disappointed too, mostly because I wanted a XC2 character in, and I believed to the "it came out too late in development", and then I discover they kept a spot for a character for a game that came 2 years after XC2. But I know that the blame is on the higher ups in Nintendo, not on Sakurai, he had to do what he was told.
Atleast Byleths reveal kind of makes me expect yet another Pokémon rep to be added in Fighters Pass 2 as well. It's still gonna be disappointing but atleast I know it's not gonna happen now.
Honestly, when my sister told me Byleth was ganna be in the game, I freaked out with excitement. I hadn't been playing ssbu in a while because I was getting bored of it. But now I'm massively stoked. Currently warming my fingers up for Byleth's realise date. Since my comeback with the game I also downloaded Terry and Hero. The game has gotten so much more exciting!
“If we had more Mario characters” mario has like 9 to 11 and technically 18 if you counted all the koopalings, one of those characters a literally mario in cosplay, one of them is peach but more energetic, and the other is a potted plant, what do you mean?
Yeah, I think that actually leads into something you don't see too much of in discussions about this: how many viable fighters does that franchise really have? Mario typically just has its core set of characters that it uses in almost every game. You've got Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach and the core 4, with Yoshi, Rosalina, and Donkey Kong also showing up sometimes. Rosalina, for example, didn't even fight in Galaxy. She just kind of stood around in the observatory. This is mostly the same case for Zelda: a big franchise with a comparatively smaller amount of characters (yes, I know it's a different Link and Zelda every time, but they're still Link and Zelda). Meanwhile, franchises like Fire Emblem and Pokemon have an almost comical amount of characters that you could potentially put in Smash if you wanted to. If you wanted to pur Franz and Vikavolt in Smash, those would be very odd picks, but no one would really stop you from doing that.
@@michaelbesser5348 yes this it the point. Pokemon & Fire Emblem are games that with each entry has a different protagonist i.e the lords and the starters. Nintendo has to keep adding the latest one because that's promoting. Even adding another Mario character is still promoting, its just that Mario & Zelda all have the main cast with each entry so you cant really deviate from that. I mean if Xenoblade or Final Fantasy got more characyers they would all be the protagonist from a different entry in their series. That's just how JRPGs work

Motoxi R contrary to Reggie’s statement of unexpected characters, Byleth was pretty predictable since Nintendo is obviously super biased and loves the hell out of Fire Emblem cause all of the FE characters were just added in for blatant advertising.
I did too besides in all honesty he was the only character I wanted to be in smash for a couples of reasons. One to promote their main character from their latest fire emblem game and how successful it became. The evidence is all there.
It's kinda obvious that it was happening. The fighting style of three houses seemed specifically designed to counter Smash fan's "anime sword fighter" complaint simply by giving Byleth access to almost every weapon.

Well, my first reaction was "meh" as well, until i saw (and now played) his Moveset, he is really a great addition. I get your Point about how weird it is, that we've so many FE Additions, but not as many Mario and Zelda Addition. The thing however is from my perspective, that while Zelda have so many potential for new characters, especially if you played Hyrule Warriors, the difference which i see is that Mario or Zelda have a consistent Universe / Characters. Means every entry shares the same Maincharacters, that's why if you consider the Redesign of Zelda and especially Link, one might argue that we've gotten different iterations of Adult Link(TP, Skyward Sword Link, now BotW Link) while in case of FE these iterations are handled as Echo Characters. In case of Fire-Emblem however each entry stands on it's own (similiar to Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy) which means even if there are recurring "Characters" most of them have a different plot with different main-characters and stuff. So it sorta makes sense to chose the recent maincharacters of the newest entry over a side-character of existing Maincharacters which represents their Games. Secondly i've to disagree with the Argument of joker being left out. Even there were a very vocal crowd which are displeased with him. For one due some of them find him "weeb" and rather wanted to have a western Video-Game Character, for another due there isn't a proper Persona Game existing on Switch and from their perspective there should be only Characters added to switch were the Maingame exist. Thirdly: Besides the Price, there is another issue which i've with people who complain about buying the FP for one sole character is that there is more to the FP than that. For one you might have Friends / Familiy which might enjoy this characters, where in the end you yourself profit due you have a new character to fight against... for another you also 've gotten new Stages and Tracks which adds variety to where you fight and music on the background... so idk. Let's say there would be a Character in FP2 which i really would hate, i'd still would be happy about the pass due i get a new map and a set of tracks.
Me: * facepalm * If only they listened Do people forget that Sakurai created this series? He didn't have to continue. But he did. He could have said no and debunked what they said about how there was a new smash coming. But he didn't.
I think byleth was actually the first character of the second pass, since the trailer didn't really hide who it was, we can assume that was for a direct, not a smash presentation. Maybe they swapped the spots because if they started pass 2 with byleth instead of a big surprise (say master chief) not as many people would buy it.
It's not that there are "too many" fire emblem reps, it's that 4 of the 8 share the same moveset. Roy is a Clone of Marth, Lucina is an Echo of Marth, and Chrom is an Echo of a Clone of Marth. If they took these three and made them costumes of Marth, like the DQ Heroes, then it wouldn't be so bad. Bring the 8 FE Reps to 5: Marth, Ike, Robin, Corrin, and Byleth. All with unique movesets. Take some of Roy/Chrom/Lucinas specific moves and damage outputs, apply them to Marth so that the four of them sharing a 100% shared moveset, with no 'technical' differences, wouldn't feel weird.
If that were true people wouldn't be as mad about Byleth as they are because Byleth is more akin to an arsenal than a simple sword character. People are just mad because they had their hopes up on any other character I.E. Dante from DMC. When their expectations were subverted that's when they took to salt and rage.
@@ghostbl33d65 based on what I've seen most people do like Byleth's moveset, but just dont like the fact he's FE. If we didn't have so many FE characters already it honestly wouldn't be an issue. At least that's how I see it.
Ixbran pretty much right on the money. With games like this I always thought a game like this 4 characters for every franchise would be great balance. It’s always doesn’t help things that two of the fire emblem characters are lazy clone characters which doesn’t help expand the roster.
1:10 People actually said this!? After this guy went out of his way to add Banjo & Kazooie, Ridley, and King K. Rool even when he was kind of enough to make sans and cuphead costumes with music coming with them??
Co-Pilot yeah dude, I had never heard of terry, knew very little about Persona, and didn’t really care about Dragon Quest. I did play Banjo Kazooie a bit as a kid but out of all five Byleth definitely takes the cake for hype.
I mean, the reason the reaction changed from "Too many Fire Emblem Swordsman" to "SCREW FIRE EMBLEM" is a pretty clear case of Fire Emblem getting too many characters in such short order. In Melee, there were two Fire Emblem fighters- Marth and Roy. Brawl kept to two fighters with Marth and now Ike. Then, Smash 4 just went crazy with Fire Emblem characters- Marth and Ike returned, Lucina and Robin were in the base game, and Roy and Corrin were DLC. The franchise went from two to six in ONE GAME, which is a bit much, even in my opinion. Then Ultimate began with just Chrom added, which, from what I saw, was met with indifference because it was just an Echo and Fire Emblem didn't get a promotional character pick or anything like that... until Byleth. It really feels like the reaction was so strong just because Fire Emblem's gotten so many fighters in the game in such a short order, when other series like Zelda or Kirby haven't seen a new fighter since Brawl, and these are series that people have wanted a new fighter from for a long time. Now, for my stance... I like Byleth fine. From what I can tell, they're bland as a character, being an avatar and not having actual character, but I think the character looks fun, the stage looks neat, and I'm happy we finally got some Nintendo representation in this NINTENDO fighting game. Everyone's been so hyped up over all these third party fighters that it feels people have just forgotten "oh yeah, this is a Nintendo game, what cool Nintendo characters can they add?" and instead view any first party choices as disappointing and undeserving. Not here to call anyone out, granted, but this is just how it's looked to me, viewing the fanbase and all the speculation around the DLC. Like, I totally agree- disappointment with Byleth, or any character, really, is fine, as long as people are civil about it and not ranting and raving and demanding someone's head or job over it. I was disappointed with Joker since I sat through the Game Awards where he was revealed, and it was such a boring slog to sit through. And then, "oh look, here comes a Persona reveal, don't c- wait, what's this about Smash Bros!? Come on, man, I sat through this whole boring show and virtually any character would've been better than someone from a game I don't even care for!" Granted, my problem wasn't with Joker himself, just the Game Awards being a really boring show, especially if you're watching them expecting reveals from one company and have no stock in what the others do, as reveals for your company are few and far between, Nintendo especially. That being said, after my initial Game Awards fueled disappointment died down, I was willing to admit Persona 5 is like, super popular and Joker is a good choice for DLC, and Joker is fun to play as, the stage is SUPER cool, and in general, Joker was a good DLC pick. It was just a bad set of circumstances for Joker's inclusion that left it initially as a super disappointment. And while I didn't react anywhere as negatively, Hero and Terry were just meh to me. Hero because I'm not much of an RPG guy, so Dragon Quest doesn't appeal to me. And Terry, I just didn't like the trailer of, not because it's a bad trailer, but because I got NONE of the references to his series. It's probably a great trailer for people who know all the SNK characters they included and got a kick out of the myriad references and shout outs to Terry's home series... but they were lost on me. But again, they're fun to play, so disappointing reveals aside, they're fine additions to the roster. Besides, I got Banjo, so even if I hated this last character, I wouldn't have been anything more than annoyed I woke up at 8 in the morning for "Boring McGee" in Smash, because I was already satisfied with the roster's DLC. But all this is to say disappointment is fine, strong, hateful reactions are not. And if you ask me, I don't think it's Nintendo's problem fans set up these expectations of an all third party DLC or this or that and were ultimately burned, because the burn was because everyone overloaded the hype train and it crashed and burned because the fans, once again, surprise surprise, set up all these big expectations and when they weren't met, went ballistic for no good reason. Like, Smash, historically, has always left the less exciting reveals for last. Duck Hunt's the last character revealed in Smash 4, Corrin was one of the last two fighters revealed for that game's DLC, though Bayonetta's the exception, not the rule, and then Ken and Incineroar just murdered the hype train, but even they were preceded by Isabelle, of all characters. And if we wanna go even further back, and not just for dates, but fan reaction, Wolf was the last reveal for Brawl. And while Wolf became vindicated by history, back in the day, people hated Wolf from what I remember. So people should not only have expected a disappointing final reveal for this last DLC, but should expect one for the wave 2 DLC as well. Go in with low expectations, people, ALWAYS GO IN WITH LOW EXPECTATIONS! That way, if things end on an awesome high note, you're left excited because you didn't expect the cool thing to happen... and if things do end up disappointing in the end, you're not as mad.
wootmasterzorsx I agree with your last statement. Set yourself low. If you keep listening to these ‘leakers’ and overhype yourself, you’ll be ultimately bummed out when you find out the actual announced characters. On the side note, I am also overall satisfied with the DLC roster. Granted I did not grow up with Dragon Quest and Fatal Fury, I do know them very much as they achieve iconic status in the video game industry. And if you ask me 10 years ago when I was playing Brawl that you get characters like Cloud, Banjo or Ryu in the next smash game, I’d say you’re joking. Sakurai has achieved our video game crossover dream more than anyone has in the last years, appreciate it and don’t take it for granted.
Seenl6 Eight I never said anything to that effect- nothing about any of what I said was talking about Nintendo being biased or not. So... Yeah, never said anything like that.
wootmasterzorsx I understand, I’m just pointing out that the reason Fire Emblem got new characters faster than most other Nintendo franchises is obviously just for blatant advertising the new game, and people are sick of Fire Emblem getting so much favoritism compared to Zelda and Star Fox. The reason people aren’t mad at the Mario and Pokémon characters is mainly because most of them look and play differently, and were advertised much less than Fire Emblem. I mean, the only copy and paste character people had the exact opposite reaction compared to Byleth was Daisy, and maybe Richter.
Seenl6 Eight You're pointing that out by telling me it in a way as if I wasn't already fully aware Nintendo is biased towards Fire Emblem. Yes, I get that Fire Emblem has a huge Nintendo bias and fans want other, smaller represented series to get fighters- I said as much with regards to Zelda and Kirby getting snubbed but Fire Emblem going from 2 to 6 fighters. And I have definitely heard people tired of Mario and Pokemon getting fighters. Especially people who don't want any Pokemon fighters as DLC. Doesn't matter how differently the characters play, people are still gonna get fatigued by a series having tons and tons of characters. Also, side note nitpick- Mario, Luigi, and Dr. Mario all play similarly, Peach has Daisy as an Echo, and Pikachu has Pichu as a clone. Mario's arguably worse about similar fighters in his ranks than the swordies with 3 Mario variations and two Peaches. Pokemon's been pretty good about unique fighters, though, but felt Pikachu/Pichu was worth a mention. So basically... Yeah, no duh, I'm well aware Nintendo's biased towards Fire Emblem, but my comment was focusing solely on fan reaction and how we got to the point we're at for Fire Emblem hate.
The Byleth drama was stooped, I mean why would you make death threats to the man who gave you Joker and others. I like Three Houses and haved played it so Byleth is a cool character with his/hers move set. Mario has too many characters in smash so why is people complaining. We want Waluigi sooooo don’t complain ok?
Smash fans can never accept that fire emblem is now one of Nintendo's biggest franchise that sells millions and wins players choice gotys Plus it's one of Sakurai's favorite game series
@@ImmaLittlePip Of course it's big now but is it nearly as big as Mario or Pokemon? I sincerely doubt it, and yet it has almost as much characters as they do.
The argument of the moveset to justify a character is the reason MVC:I failed. Remember that Capcom say characters are "funtions" AKA "movesets". This type of cross overs is to see character from different words. So, yeah, charcter is essential for this type of games due the main audience. Not agaisnt FE, but at lesst choose a character with personality intead of the players avatar
The bigger problem with MVC:I was them cutting mainstays from the roster (X-Men and the likes of Dr. Doom) in favor of new blood. Smash didn't cut Pikachu and Ganondorf in favor of Inkling and Incineroar (and claim that they were worthy replacements due to "functions"). Ultimate didn't need to worry about that thanks to "Everyone is Here", but having every veteran to compare with makes "functions" more important, as newcomers (especially DLC as they're separate purchases) need to stand out gameplay-wise to attract people who have no attachment to them. Also, picking someone who isn't Byleth would split the 3H fanbase as it'd probably be one of the 3 lords. They'd appease one side, and anger the other 2 if they pick a lord, while Byleth is always playable.
When I saw Byleth I thought "Oh interesting". I'm not one to get overly emotional most of the time, so when I see a new character added to the game, even if it's one I'd never heard of before, I just think "oh, neat" and leave it at that. Regarding the reveal as an FE fan myself I do understand why it felt underwhelming and honestly the reveal trailer on first watch felt underwhelming to me compared to previous reveals. That said their moveset seems neat, & I liked that they poked fun at all the swordfighters in the game (we have more fist/legfighters though) as we do have allot of them and an under representation of other weapons. I do think people screaming profanities/insults, calling for him to be fired & regretting buying the pass among others are being ridiculous and childish though. It's okay to dislike a char but it's not okay to throw a tantrum over them. Either be civil or don't respond.
Just to Clearify, for me (and the Majority of Smash Fans) Byleth was a Gratefull Surprise, i Like his Moveset and his Stage, What i Wanted to Say, was, Nobody Wanted him, everyone Wanted Dante, Monster Hunter, Etc, Another FE Character was the Last thing that The Smash Fans Wanted
Honestly , I LOVE BYLETH! I played Three Houses and it’s the best game in the entire series! Honestly, I was sooo happy when they revealed him/her... and my cousins were next to me depressed..
I think there is also some misblaming going on as Sakurai said Nintendo picked out the characters for the first fighter pass. So don't go yelling at Sakurai for the choice (rather don't yell at him at all).
Nah we should yell at him actually because his taking everyone for a joke by revealing a character he knows we wouldn't want or be that pleased about and his here smirking and laughing and all that stuff and basically calling the community idiots so why are we praising him? His acting like a troll
@@mcdonaldsdoublecheeseburge6818 Nah i don't condone death threats i think that's abit too extreme. I'm just stating how he acts like a troll so idk where your getting :death threats" from...
@@mcdonaldsdoublecheeseburge6818 Adding Piranha Plant just to troll us for believing a fake leak, adding Byleth just to troll us, laughing at us for wanting our requested character to get in, punishes the fans for speculating which one of their favourite characters might get in. Followed by a troll face
@Turbotowns And this is why i have no respect for him because he knows how to piss people off and he laughs and smirks about like a complete jerk! I really hope one day he gets so much backlash he has enough and quits and i certainly won't miss him
"focused too much on just the character rep, and not the moveset in general" I'm not really focused at all on the moveset, tbh. Having another visually non-distinct FE rep with a fill-in-the-blank personality is disappointing from a character design perspective, *not* a moveset perspective. Characters aren't just functions, that entire argument seems to totally ignore why people request their favorite characters or get excited about them.
You sir have contradicted yourself. "Having another visually non-distinct FE rep with a fill in the blank personality..." You just excluded every other franchise that has a fill in the blank personality and focused on fire emblem's fill in the blank protagonist. Legend of Zelda has 3 Links that don't speak at all and have little personality in them. And people still love link despite the fact he doesn't speak. All the heroes in Dragon Quest can be summed to this too and Japan loves DQ. The difference for DQ is that their heroes are more distinct in their designs compared to others. The whole point for the silent protagonist is so YOU can be the hero. Supporting this is when you change their name to yours Now back to the main topic. The FE characters from three houses are really distinct if you compare them to the previous designs. To say you can't tell the difference between the protagonists makes me suspect you're blind or ignorant cause you can point out a lot of differences The moveset for Byleth is by far the most unique we've seen for a fire emblem character because they actually use more than a sword. The only other FE character like that was Robin but people still focus on the fact the he has a sword in his arsenal. Now you're last argument about "requests" is exactly what's wrong with the community now. They have so many requests they want in the game but don't realize that their requests were becoming "expects." As in "I expect my character to get in because I've narrowed down all the possibilities they have left for the next fighter" type of thing. You can be excited if you're character gets in, but if they don't look at what that character has to offer, hence the moveset cause you may find you'll like. Tl;Dr other franchises have blank personalities. You're just outing FE because Byleth got in. The character may be disappointing to others but if you're not focusing on the moveset at least then you're failing to see the variety in the roster
@@solomoncounts6676 There's no contradiction, because I didn't say three fucking Links was okay. I also didn't say zero fill-in-the-blank characters is the only acceptable amount, I said *another one from the same franchise* is disappointing. When you're arguing with somebody, read what's there, not what you want to see. When I say "visually distinct" I'm not looking for "they wear an edgier coat than other FE characters and have a different color of blue hair", I'm looking for something a little more. Maybe *not* a lean-ish heroic type with slightly messy blue hair, it's not like FE doesn't have characters like Hector or literally any villains at all. There are 3 Mario characters wearing basically the same outfit, and they've got more going for them in terms of feeling like unique characters. I don't know why you're bringing up "how unique" Byleth's moveset is. It's not very important. That's most of the point of my comment, that moveset isn't very important here. My argument about people requesting characters is *not* about entitlement or whatever you seem to want it to be about. What I'm saying is that if people perceived characters based on their movesets, then people wouldn't have any reason to request characters, and they wouldn't get excited about character trailers before they see the movesets, and X-Men getting canned from Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite wouldn't be a big deal, and Capcom justifying it with "we replaced them with characters that serve the same function" would appease the fans. But none of those things are true. Therefore, it must be the case that characters are important to people beyond what their movesets are. That's all I wanted to prove. Don't make this argument about something it's not. The argument that people shouldn't be upset about Byleth because of the unique moveset assumes the premise that a character is only as valuable as their moveset, so if what I said in the previous paragraph is true, the argument is invalid. That was the main point of my comment, that it doesn't make sense to bring up moveset because it's not that relevant to what people care about *most* in fighting game characters. I'm also not saying that moveset is a complete non-factor, but the design and history of a character definitely come first.
Sakurai never said every DLC Fighter would be third-party. He DID say he _wanted_ every DLC fighter to be from an untouched franchise, to expand Ultimate's massive scope while he's got the chance. For this reason I believe Sakurai didn't have much of a choice when it came to adding Byleth.
@Drew Baxter Yeah but the problem here is that they knew they where going to make DLC characters heck they even said that before the game even came out, they could have made rex a DLC character anyway Not that i want him of course it's just that it makes sense for him to be playable
@@pangoldie Nononono. If the Sans and Cuphead cosplays get treated as their own characters, (because fans said so,great...) then the Rex costume works as well!
I'm gonna throw it out there that Fire Emblem: Three Houses is my favorite game of all time and I was ECSTATIC at the reveal. And it makes me so fucking pissed off that that people are so mad about Byleth, especially when the community as a whole was saying stuff like be respectful because this reveal could be who someone wants and then they blow up once it's not who they want. None of the other 4 characters mattered to me at all and I didn't get upset about it but then seeing everyone else so mad about it makes me just hate the Smash community more and more
I¨m stoked about the inclusion. finally, a character that represents the entire weapon triangle. With that said.... Yeah, I can understand if people were disappointed, and I sure can certainly agree that the timing was.... dumb? Concidering the last wave of Three Houses DLC got its trailer pretty much on the get-go after the reveal, I think its safe to say that Byleths reveal were a marketing tool. They should have made Byleth a new Piranha Plant. Free if you purchase the Fighters Pass, but have the same cost as a regular fighter if you want to purchase Byleth individually Also... yeah, stuff like Sakurai needs to step down and all that jazz is just so #"¤%" stupid.
Byleth is pretty much free if you get the fighters pass because buying the 5 characters individually would costs $30, but buying the 5 characters through the fighters pass is only $25.
Thing is, it was really important for Banjo and Hero to be announced side by side because one appealed mostly to the west, and one mostly to the east. They were announced together to help mitigate the blowback from either announcement so it wouldn't be good idea to separate them. And Terry was a niche announcement himself so he wouldn't be a good last fighter either. Basically what I'm saying is Banjo or Hero being last would work but they have to be side by side, and then Byleth could safely hang out in the middle somewhere.
How the character reveal order should be. 1. Joker at VGA 2018 2. Byleth at E3. Before Three Houses release and would help push sales for the game. 3. Banjo-Kazooie at E3. For most people, the announcement of Banjo saved E3 for them and some were disappointed with Hero. 4. Hero at Nintendo Direct 9/4. This would be a few weeks before Dragon Quest 11 S release. 5. Terry for last. Sakurai would tell a story about this character and his series was the inspiration for Smash Bros.
Is it because of "cancel culture" which just recently got a dicernable name, which then seemingly multiplied its effect to an extreme? We really need some kind of internet driver's license...
Is cancel culture where a fan community bands together and seeks justifiable change such as the Sonic the Hedgehog movie redesign? Cause that’s how I see this situation in a nutshell.
I spoke to a professor of marketing about why Byleth was the 5th fighter. His conclusion was that if they'd put them any sooner, it'd weaken fighter pass sales because expectations would be more realistic. By putting the character last, Nintendo gets the most bang for their buck while also advertising their biggest FE game to date.
People are surprised by the fact that they have a Nintendo character in the first Fighters pass what the hell is wrong with you people it made perfect sense to have a Nintendo character in a Fighters pass for a Nintendo game

Smash community in a nutshell
Us smash fans are entitled to our opinions but we shouldn't attack the creator

Crazy how Byleth got more hate than Piranha Plant.
Hold on. Why would you hate an innocent plant?
The plant was more "Wait. WHAT?!" and Byleth was simply "despise of FE and swords" for this -dumb- GREAT fandom.
Even Sothis said so: "What, too many swordies? And you, you wield a sword as well!" And Sothis is voiced by Morgana, and you can't hate Morgana. Or you'll be forced to sleep. Forever.
I know right
Exactly.
Plant Gang is fkn hilarious.
Yeah, you are not wrong about that
Good point.

Also I don't think anyone was truly mad about Banjo, being included. I mean why would they 😂.

@@conorb.1901 I totally agree, sadly most of the smash community doesn't though :(
@@brucewayne3295 Plus Awakening basically resurrected the franchise (especially in the West) so while having 3 reps from that game is a bit excessive, it's also kind of understandable in a way. I don't agree with it since 2 of them are echoes but I understand why they did it
A lot of haters were like, "If Sakurai loves Fire Emblem so much, then make a Fire Emblem game."
And. Well. Not only do I want him to make a Fire Emblem game. I actually *would* like it if Smash had series-specific spin-offs. I'd love a Smash game with nothing but Zelda characters.
JAPAN LOVES EMBLEM

Chris Westergaard I agree to certain degree, but that would have diminished the hype from the e3 reveals. Either way, I look forward to Byleth.
(was it a smart decision to be a FE char is up to debate, but the general consenses is that it wasn't, even coming from those who liked it)
well that was confusing...
D4RT Outside the triforce owners there are not too many characters from Zelda that would be good fighters.

Plus, Plant got a tiny bit of extra hate when some hated that if you didn't buy Smash right away, you suddenly had to pay for him so you were getting less content for the same price three months later.
UltimaKeyMaster didn't the plant cost less then the other dlc characters?

As someone who played Three Houses as their introduction to the series, and already got the two out of three dream choices in Smash, Byleth was the first FE character that I was excited to see, even if the decision to end the pass with them left a little to be desired. To the people who were disappointed or straight up hate Byleth or FE in general, just remember, there are 6 more slots after this, and heaven knows what could happen after that.

Not entering the giveaway. No hand included is a complete turn off
The FE criticism probably just came from how many FE characters we got in such a short time, where many other franchises with this many characters had built up to that number over time.
Melee: 2 FE characters
Brawl: 1 FE character
Wii U/3Ds: 3 FE characters added in

2:48 I think the problem is exactly this. You CAN take his entire moveset on an entirely different character with almost no changes and it works.
Thirdly:
Besides the Price, there is another issue which i've with people who complain about buying the FP for one sole character is that there is more to the FP than that.

Ghostbl33d yeah people really overhyped the reveal
Actually there are only two clones Lucina and chrom everyone else is good.
I feel like I’m the only person in the entire Smash community who’s favorite dlc fighter announcement was Byleth...
Luke Same honestly, I hadn’t even heard of any of the other characters (and that even includes Banjo) I was so happy when Byleth was announced
Luke Yep
Co-Pilot yeah dude, I had never heard of terry, knew very little about Persona, and didn’t really care about Dragon Quest. I did play Banjo Kazooie a bit as a kid but out of all five Byleth definitely takes the cake for hype.
Well you and a lot of the fire emblem fans
Well I honestly never heard of Byleth or cared for FE in general, my hypes where Banjo and the hero Cause they are games from my childhood
Nintendo chose the characters, not Sakurai. Sakurai didn’t want to put Byleth in, he had to. Don’t blame the guy, just appreciate his hard work.
Sakurai has achieved our video game crossover dream more than anyone has in the last years, appreciate it and don’t take it for granted.
wootmasterzorsx i mean, Nintendo markets the hell out of Fire Emblem, what makes you think they aren’t biased
Seenl6 Eight I never said anything to that effect- nothing about any of what I said was talking about Nintendo being biased or not. So... Yeah, never said anything like that.
wootmasterzorsx
I understand, I’m just pointing out that the reason Fire Emblem got new characters faster than most other Nintendo franchises is obviously just for blatant advertising the new game, and people are sick of Fire Emblem getting so much favoritism compared to Zelda and Star Fox.
I want a freaking *SONIC CHARACTER*
Thank you, I needed this in the swelling storm of negative backlashes
The Byleth drama was stooped, I mean why would you make death threats to the man who gave you Joker and others. I like Three Houses and haved played it so Byleth is a cool character with his/hers move set. Mario has too many characters in smash so why is people complaining. We want Waluigi sooooo don’t complain ok?
Emmanuel Brijandez I agree
Smash fans can never accept that fire emblem is now one of Nintendo's biggest franchise that sells millions and wins players choice gotys
Plus it's one of Sakurai's favorite game series
ImmaLittlePip So he’s biased
@@ImmaLittlePip Of course it's big now but is it nearly as big as Mario or Pokemon? I sincerely doubt it, and yet it has almost as much characters as they do.
The drama towards hate for Byleth hasn't stopped at all. I still see people venting online.
There really was no better opportunity to reveal Banjo than at E3, so him being the third fighter in the Fighter's Pass makes sense.
Wouldn't call it an avatar since you can't customize it like Corrin and Robin.
0:38 Damnit I wanted that hand...
Byleth’s reveal got me to finally play Three Houses, and it’s already one of my favorite games on the Switch.
Smash fans: (furious typing and ranting)
FE fans: "So Sakurai consumes even the darkness itself!"
10:49 Um...Aaron, that's a lance.
This Season Begins with a Character Nobody Wanted (Piranha Plant) so is ok that It Ends with a Character Nobody Wanted Either

@@mcdonaldsdoublecheeseburge6818 Adding Piranha Plant just to troll us for believing a fake leak, adding Byleth just to troll us, laughing at us for wanting our requested character to get in, punishes the fans for speculating which one of their favourite characters might get in. "focused too much on just the character rep, and not the moveset in general"
I'm not really focused at all on the moveset, tbh.
Supporting this is when you change their name to yours
Now back to the main topic. The FE characters from three houses are really distinct if you compare them to the previous designs. To say you can't tell the difference between the protagonists makes me suspect you're blind or ignorant cause you can point out a lot of differences
The moveset for Byleth is by far the most unique we've seen for a fire emblem character because they actually use more than a sword.
Just want to point out that they didn't add rex because he was "too recent" and yet they added byleth who's game was released last summer
But they didn’t add him because he was created after smash ultimate was in the works
Sakurai got to play an early copy of Three Houses, so he had a lot of reference when designing Byleth.
okey fair point, i think sakurai just has a love affair with fire emblem
@Drew Baxter Yeah but the problem here is that they knew they where going to make DLC characters heck they even said that before the game even came out, they could have made rex a DLC character anyway
Not that i want him of course it's just that it makes sense for him to be playable
@@pangoldie Nononono. If the Sans and Cuphead cosplays get treated as their own characters, (because fans said so,great...) then the Rex costume works as well!
I never understood the "too many swordfighters" complaint. Like... swordfighter is one of the most basic character archetypes in smash.
Yeah, thats why there are at least enough of them.
I don't hate Byleth in Smash, but I agree that we have enough Sworties and Fire Emblemos already.
I mean the sword is the most common weapon any character can commonly wield other a gun or a fist.
The Fat Piranha Plant Same here, i also grew up with Halo, But mostly MARIO games and minecraft
Free if you purchase the Fighters Pass, but have the same cost as a regular fighter if you want to purchase Byleth individually
Also... yeah, stuff like Sakurai needs to step down and all that jazz is just so #"¤%" stupid.
Byleth is pretty much free if you get the fighters pass because buying the 5 characters individually would costs $30, but buying the 5 characters through the fighters pass is only $25.
Also if byleth was annouced before E3 it would've been Corrin all over again.
1. Joker at VGA 2018
Cant wait to get my han- oh
