Roger used a core aerator to add small holes to the lawn and then added compost. A core aerator can be rented at tool rental houses and home centers. Compost is available at home centers and garden centers.
Roger applied Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass, which is a fertilizer high in phosphorous to promote root growth. He then spread Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix, which is coated to help lock in moisture. Both of these are manufactured by Scotts.
All the other tools for this project, including a broadcast spreader and lawn rake, are available at home centers and nurseries.

I know this is an old episode, but god bless you roger. I hope you are well!
Good to see Roger.
Very old
Clam chowda....
even in this episode you can see his age which is really sad. hope he is doing well
@@marvinfrancisco4812, i do to Marvin.
It really is great to see Rodger!!
It’s an old episode
I appreciate everyone in the This Old House family, but I really miss Roger. I hope he is doing OK.
Great to see you Roger!!!
This is from a few years ago
"we cut out all the smallest geometry and doing that first"... machine proceeds to cut out the stool seat then the inner holes for the legs
Always good to see Roger. Still waiting for more Roger fishing videos.
Great to see Roger!
Great "Build It" segment with Tommy and Jay at 13:01
Modern-day manufacturing is quite impressive. And I love how it ended with some Hands-On craftsmanship. This was really a great episode....... all of it! Thanks again so much.
I live in Norway but I love the craftmannstyle and I will do craftmannstyle trim all over my house! :)
Tom : Real PRO with everyone and everyone be real pros !
love ask this old house
Love Roger. Yaahd, summah, staaht, aah.
Love the last shop and the display of all the computer based tools, thanks for sharing! :)
I use staartah fertilizer & my yawd looks great.
Wicked cool.
Also wataa
I'm not so sure about that spring seeding advice from Rodger. In our area, Midwest, two applications of pre-emergent are recommended typically. 1 in mid to late March and another in early May. When I apply spring seed for customers, I skip the first pre-emergent application and apply the seed, then follow up with the later pre-emergent application after the seed is established. Crabgrass doesn't typically germinate an hour area until early May anyway. Bottom line, check with your local Turf people!
As you so wisely say, not all areas require the same treatment.
And you might also refer to any advice from your local agronomy departments.
There again if gardening is your thing then no reason not to experiment with human wee ... absolutely free and an inexhaustible supply right on your doorstep.
@@t1n4444 also time intensive and a luxury most people would rather not afford
@@josephkilleen7807 😂😂😂 how long does it take you to produce a few pints of nature's goodness, dilute it in a watering can and sprinkle it over a lawn.
Even the lawn we saw wouldn't take that long.
I was just thinking about a laser wood cutter and boda bing here it is
Tom was just being nice. That chair could have been done in less time if you did it by hand. 2 to 3 hours to make that chair?
yup one caould easily print stencils on paper paste on wood and use a jig saw.
I think it's one of those shops run on government handouts in some way, there's def something odd about it
I'm guessing they just wanted to show off their laser cutter and 3D printer, because those parts should be able to go straight from the model to CNC and still fit well enough for a bar stool. Cool shop, though. Lots of high-end equipment.
I recently bought a house that backs up to a lake ,the rain water runs to the back and washes the dirt and sand, mainly I have sand in the back, what is the best way to control the water washing the dirt.
I have a damaged lawn due to ground moles. What should I do, what works best. My yard is full of tunnels.
lmao "Gabby"
This Old House can you upload S6E9 FULL EPISODE please?
As soon as he said San Francisco… I already knew…. Poor Tom….
That stool - what an awesome group of people doing something amazing. Would love to visit the place.
I'd like to see the metal on that stool to be aluminum and be anodized red. That would pop.
That is the fabulous thing about that kind of tech ... you could have the stool in any colour of the rainbow.
Which, come to think about it and given its place of manufacture ... 🤔🤔🤔
@@Kevin-mp5of🤔🤔😂😂
Possibly the kind of design studio that produces working designs/pattern pieces for folks who have an idea but lack the expertise to design an item for themselves.
Their CAD lady seemed to be designing the shapes for very easy production and maximum use of the material available. IE it was the entire process for manufacturing an item.
We have a bloke like that in UK by the name of Dyson (one of your vacuum cleaner manufacturers found him quite an expensive proposition as I recall ... ).
He designs kit and then has been his Chinese factories run up the items ... at Chinese labour rates. And the notion of a "proper" union in China is a tad hazy, if you follow.
In short the profits stay overseas and he only employs a few hundred staff in UK ... and "quite" a lot more in China.
Can't fault his business acumen tho'.
Suspect too that the staff in that design studio equally switched on and definitely not hard up, at all.
@@Kevin-mp5of I put it down to my self professed creative side ... and lockdown.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Betcha tom never wants to go back to than franthisco ever again.
Idubz is that you my dude?
Very nice shop in S F
They should have also warned people that with laminate counter tops, cutting it without proper air venting and masks can cause long term respiratory issues - since you're basically cutting plastic; and then you'd breathe in the plastic dust particles.
A bit of feedback on the lawn care part.
First, before you aerate you want to make sure to give your lawn a deep watering or else the aerator won’t go as deep as you want it to.
Second, I would recommend a lawn leveler instead of a rake when you are spreading soil with compost.
Third, I would use soil to level, use a leveler (it’s a tool), throw down seed, then slightly rake, then spread peat moss. There are peat moss rollers that will make it a cleaner job spreading that.
Lastly, you want to water more than one time a day after you’ve thrown down new seed. You want to water 3 to 4 times a day for about 5-10 minutes each time until the seed germinates. The three seed types you used germinate at different times.
Just know there is a lot more to lawn care than what this video shows. Follow Ryan Knorr lawn care on CZcams for the full scoop.
Nobody has time to water a lawn 4 times a day. Are you kidding? People have lives to live.
@@D_SQ that's what I tell my customers even if they're at home all day, that's what digital timers are for!
@@D_SQ Hmm, you are forgiven for not knowing about automatic lawn sprinklers attached to a computer ... which measures parameters such as soil conditions, weather conditions, relative humidity etc, etc.
Plenty of info online if arsed.
@@t1n4444 I think I have seen a video of one of these 'automated' systems in another one of these TOH videos, but it's difficult to think about that when they didn't do it here, and the homeowner is holding a hose and watering his lawn manually, but touché I guess.
@@D_SQ 😂.
If you were arsed have a squint at the "engineered climate" polytunnels on Spanish farms.
Downside is so many chemical additives against bugs, mold, plant diseases etc, the atmosphere is inimical to human life ... as in your lungs take a right kicking.
And then we eat it.
Tommy would be done with that bench quicker than they do setting up all that crap
🤔😂😂😂
Tommy is not a god you know! 😂😂😂😂
The clip was not a competition, merely a demo of what is now possible using technologies not specifically designed for furniture construction ... sort of a mission creep thing.
And using that technology it was shown that it was possible to perfectly replicate the stool ad nauseam.
It was simply a filler piece to add interest.
Perhaps we shall see some footage of 3D printing of entire homes.
Some of your techno companies have already built such dwellings in Austin, Texas five years ago.
Personally I had no idea and found the project an excellent wheeze for mass producing housing in deprived areas.
Yeah,rite
@@brianglade848 👍👍👍🌋🌋🌋
@@Kevin-mp5of 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Couldn't find moustache thingy.
Julie is cute.
Julie had a nice caboose!
Julie is someone's brother 😂
Now, this wheeze is known only to a few. Lawn fertilizers ... as it happens there is a perfect "lawn food" available to all at absolutely zero cost.
It is the absolute epitome in the way of fertilizers. This knowledge is something the fertilizer manufacturers don't want you know about.
Anyone guessed yet? Well, to put you out of your misery I'll tell you.
Ready for this? It is human wee. Yes it's your very own waste product and is packed with nutrients that grass absolutely craves.
Plenty of info online from green community/agronomy websites and YT clips but in short properly diluted human wee is the absolute best as an all round lawn food, and any other greenery of course.
There are a few rules on dilution and frequency of application and when to feed a lawn but in short and as general rule of thumb dilute at around 7:1 ( more water), preferably before rain and during the main grass growing season for where you live.
Slightly different rules for decorative plants plants and food plants.
And don't be tempted to use your solid waste in the same way.
Any solids should be allowed to rot down for a year before applying to decorative plants and perhaps two years before application to food plants. This is because of the pathogens issue.
If you aren't entirely convinced then easy enough to do your own tests on a patch of lawn. One section without any fertilizer and two other patched fed with a proprietary lawn food and the last with wee at "a" dilution.
Lastly, on plant feeding, suggest you don't apply lobstahs, even rotted ones. If you live near the coast then washed and rotted seaweed is supposed be excellent.
Only men know how to use a screwdriver. Common tommy
??? As in opening a tin of paint and then stirring said paint???
Allow me to amend your comment and substitute "craftsperson" (you won't be pinning "sexist" on me 😂😂😂!!!)
Honestly... This old House meets the trans community crafts people. Last segment had like 3.
I was laughing out loud by the end.
TOH is now woke....it seems to work in that shop you have to be a woman, trans or gay. Interesting....
@@scallywag1716 That shop was odd. I don't care about that so much as the fact that it isn't a shop at all. It's a 3d printing company.
San Fran Sicko!

Roger seems to be moving slow
Gabby is such a woman . Love it. awesome. just awesome.
“Woman”
"Her" voice was heavenly lol
Bunch of buch ladies doing woodworking
San Francisco would be the perfect place for a pottie busniess.
A San Francisco Gabby! Producing a stool. What a hoot!
Or you can plant something else than boring grass
🤔😂😂😂😂😂
Well, seeing as the segment was about "grass" care in a lawn I suspect if they went on about trees we might be left wondering what was going on.
Do try to keep up young man.
I know what tommy was thinking... Just look at his face
Yeah who else knew "Gabby" was really Gabe with a wig on before he started talking?
I was wondering who would say something, that shop is definitely in California.😂
🥸
Bravo to This Old House for offering some more trans representation!
And without drawing attention to it, avoiding awkwardness by just letting it be, which is nice to see.
😆 🤣 😂 😹
So many confused people in one room
Oh My, You hit that nail on the proverbial, Confused Head!!
LoL
Gabby is an example to all women #original #learnwiththebest
Nope
Gabby has some big hands!
Clicked to see Roger but when Tom said hes going to San Francisco i knew we were in for a treat. Guy who sounds like a girl, then a guy who looks like girl but sounds like a guy, Julie Kumar was plum thou ;) that means two things.
Gabby? I think they meant Gabe.
Aaaannnnnddd the social programming continues!
That's all the media does now it put out propaganda. It's fine, the future is independent creators anyway. That's why no one in my family watches TV anymore. Everyone just watches CZcams videos made by independent creators.
13:47 notice the stance here trying so hard to keep the legs apart but over does it 😂😂😂"I'm a man and this is how men stand because they have big balls, I'm fooling everyone in the room" 😂😂😂
13:15 Good luck getting the pronouns right in that shop.

J and Gabby aren’t fooling anyone…..
Poor Tommy had to play along with the delusion. Imagine having to spend a day there walking on eggshells because you might use the wrong pronoun 🤦♂️
Gabby?
I wouldn't be fooled after 10 drinks and drugged out of my mind
17:12 🤦♂️ good lord why do they keep promoting these people. I feel so bad for Tommy having to go there and play along with everyone's delusion
Should've laughed and walked out
that "workshop" is a joke
Care to elaborate?
$5 million of equipment, a highly-trained staff of 10, turning out 1 stool per day that's worth no more than $200. Just goes to show there are venture capitalists with more money than sense.

You're not quite getting this thing about technical evolution and consequent mission creep.
You don't really mean this. Otherwise you'd be complaining about foot powered lathes spinning up table legs etc being replaced by mechanically powered lathes ... as in firstly steam and now electricity.
