How to Install a Metal Railing
Mark installs a custom metal railing using anchoring cement. A custom metal railing can be purchased from a welding shop. Mark recommended using one with solid steel posts. The one Mark installed was made by Mike's Welding Company. All the materials Mark used for this installation, including the caulking gun, the anchoring cement, and the coring drill, can be found at home centers.
Expert assistance for this segment was provided by MJM Masonry.

Tom demonstrates the correct way to replace a cracked kitchen floor tile. Finding a matching tile can be difficult. Look on the underside of the tile for clues and bring the tile with you to local hardware stores and tile shops when looking for a match. Everything Tom used to replace the tile, including the cold chisel, hammer, notched trowel, and grout can be found at home centers. The acrylic base Tom used in place of thinset is Acrylpro Professional Tile Adhesive, manufactured by Custom Building Products. It can be found at most home centers.

Ya gotta love Tommy. He is the best.
So the caulk at the end is so that water doesn't get into the sunken hydraulic concrete in the winter and freeze. once it freezes it can expand and break the granite over time and also lift the granite if water penetrates deep enough. Just for those who may be wondering.
That is one hell of a core drill.
I think I’m in love 😍
That steam boiler looks industrial and old but very solid and well built.
I have a German core drill, similiar to what was used here. Can be used with dry bits or wet bits. 2 different bits to buy depending on material drilling. Drill -- $1400. Bits, add more $$$$ depending on size. Some rental tool places have these. Some charge for drill, then they measure the bit, then remeasure upon return and charge you according to how much the diamond bit wore. These drills are absolutely the best at making nice holes in poured concrete, cut through rebar, brick/block walls.
Lol, could see the glee in his eyes when she said "the previous owners left us replacement tile in the basement" I fully understand, it's so rare to find spare materials tucked away for eventual repairs.
I recently bought a house and when I saw extra boxes of every tile in the garage I was so happy :D Nice little surprise
I was ecstatic when I had leftover floor tiles from all 3 rooms that were tiled when I bought my house. None for the bathroom walls, but that's just white subway tile so isnt a huge deal.
Lmaooooo I love the fact you told her that as you were leaving 🤣
lol kevin's excitement for making kindling is great.
Outstanding episode.
Love the longer videos
They're showing off with all those clamps!
the mason looks like a mason that does work on the cape 2 brothers they are amazing in every way
Custom railings, core drill. So much for diy tips for the common homeowner.
Notice the video title is installing a railing and not building one? Anyone can order a custom railing for their house and rent a core drill for the install.
@@lunchboxproductions1183 and what a core drill!!
Yeah 🙈
after you core the hole, add the grout, about half way fill the hole, then insert the rails, if u dont overfill the holes, it should bulge out just right for minimum cleanup...
Dang, that 24min flew by
I would never use pre-mix adhesive nor premixed grout...
I love the new musical opening gentleman and Jen 😊
I certainly hope that tabletop would splitter is going to be part of a free giveaway guys, cuz I want one!
You’re always thinking Tom!
If your walking out the door with a tray full of burgers the only way you are going to fall off is if you are pissed..
The boiler in my house looks exactly like that one Richard was talking about !!!!
I like how he points out the steps went toward the grill originally (which made more sense and seemed safer) and yet chose to ignore making it that way again.
i wonder how much that railing cost to make vs adding some steps in the right direction?
Soo good
I was 1 year old when they installed that boiler. Instead of a railing, I say put steps down the side and a railing attached to the house.
That would look nice but they wanted to spend as little as possible and buying stone that big would cost a lot.
You would still need 2 railings.
It really doesn't get too cold here in So Cal where I live but I used to run the heater portion of my central air/heating before. Three years ago, I had good double pane windows installed in my condo and I haven't had to turn on my heater since then.
I'm old so I do like self stick vinyl tiles for ease of installation and replacement. I bought some recently that actually have the look and feel of stone.
@@brianglade848 I just replaced the self stick vinyl tiles that I installed over 30 years ago! They actually still looked good but I just wanted another look.
Self stick tiles lined my shower. needless to say mold was growning behind it. spent the time replacing it with cement board and FRP.
$50 in galvanized steel pipe at Home Depot, you can easily make your own railings.
True...but looks like sht.
To make that railing strong, you should have had your welder make an attachment to the brick wall.
Metal more safety. Like it 😁
Chicken wire more safety. Like it 😁
@3:12 “Let’s take a look at the stairs - I think they’re just begging for a railing”
Get to it!!
The whole video was rubbish till it got exciting when Tommy arrived!
Would be nice as a follow-up to the railings to show how to repair the step that is cracked and loosened the railing
I agree..I make railings and I've seen way more blown out corners of steps from core drilling vs a good anchoring job with a good fastener. Also, it's a lot easier to remove the railing to repaint or make repairs.
god I love your content! please, keep it coming!
When that tile came up, I puckered.
It’s a lot easier when the person who initially installed the tile did a crappy job of adhering them to the sub floor lol
So does Tommy get a Hat and T-Shirt for the good usable tips on the grout and vacuum?
الله ينور تسلم ايدك
I want Roger back.
@ 7:11 ...If you mask the surface surrounding the hole (cover the exposed concrete with tape and/or cardboard!), CLEAN UP would be much EASIER!
Tommy told her about the grout grinding tool at the end because it shows her she can do it without the dedicated tools
I think it's so Tommy didn't have to deal with the work. That stuff is a pain. I would rather replace the floor.
I'm surprise he didn't anchored the top railing onto the brick wall?? Maybe it's unnecessary for solid railings.
@@Ampacityelectric He stated cost was an issue. Maybe sometime in the future?
You would if you bought the railing at lowes and only had it anchored to the granite instead of cemented into the granite. Think of how little to no wobble a basketball hoop has when properly installed in cement.

I know that people love tile in the kitchen, but isn't the grout absorbent? Doesn't it get gross over time absorbing everything from foot traffic dirt to dirty mop water?
Yes. If you use epoxy grout you are able to clean it with a grout brush. You will pretty much find it in commercial unless it was special requested by the homeowner. Cementious grout is normal and discolored over time permanently.
Why not back butter the tile??

It's only getting worse. CZcams is now adding ads to channels that once had the option to be ad-free, including channels that are too small to be eligible to receive their split of ad revenue. Your options are desktop browser+adblocker; or pay for youtube premium/
CZcams is getting ridiculous 🤦🏻♂️
12,- a month and you wont see a single ad. About the same price as Netflix and personally i watch CZcams many hours more than Netflix.

@ 6:05 ..." a 'regular drill' to clean it out." .....A large, Bosch hammer drill with a concrete SDS bit is a regular drill? Ha ha ha
Roger!
Please! Sharpen your pencil ✏️ I feel so hopeless when I see you’re trying to mark the position of the railing 😂😂😂
I like the stationary fro for kindling!!! Where do u find that to buy?
Just do a search for, "Kindling Cracker." They make 2 sizes. Or you can click on the link they provide above.
I wonder how much tommy charge to replace one tile
23:24 Is there a way that people can do certain maintenance on their tails on a regular basis to help keep their grout from drying out over time so it never will just crack over time? This would prevent things where your grout won't be missing like it was in this case?
Are they really filming these gatherings in that big red barn?. Or is that just a prop.?
It's a studio set, even the windows are fake (and don't match the actual barn window shapes or placement!). My understanding is that the production offices and studio really are in *_a_* restored red barn in MA, just not the one they actually show, although they are near each other
Code requirement for what? Height of stairs to require a railing? Be specific
Don’t you have to seal the grout?
Yes you do. It's the lack of grout seal that caused the grout to be in the condition Tommy talked about at the end.
Some grout doesnt require a sealer. Mapei makes one(sold at the blue box store) and spectralock has one that is some kind of epoxy(or something like it) that is super durable, non cement based, and doesnt require sealing.
Does anyone know if there is a play list for the two houses in South Carolina? I can't find it!
Should have just replaced that hideous tile floor
18:08 ...is this "buggin" anyone else?
I thought pre-mix Acrylic adhesive does not recommend using for bigger than 8"x8" tiles. That kitchen tile looks like at least 12"x12"....
It's not but that whole floor js probably failing anyways.
is it just me or were the other tiles loose?
Probably so. That tile wasn't bonded at all.
3 men with $10k of tools make the job look easy. Don’t try this at home
Must be nice to have TV money. 🙊
There are places where houses do not have AC?? I guess is just since I live in Houston where it gets to 100 degrees and there is 100% humidity I just expect every place to have AC. Whenever I saw apartments advertising that they had AC as part of their "amenities" I was like that is not an amenity that is a necessity
The age of the house has a lot to do with whether it has AC or not. Go back long enough, and the houses were designed in such a way to resist the mid day sun.
Now, they disregard those old design strategies and just build them as low cost and air tight as possible.
@@brianglade848 it's too fahkin hohtt!!
It's funny you say that, my wife is from Australia and many of their places do not have air conditioning, despite 100 + degree summers and high humidity. A lot of the ones that do have AC are window units! I don't get it.
That hammer was to heavy for splitting wood, you shouldn’t have to choke up on the handle so much

Wtf am I watching!! First segment is absolutely garbage! Never made it past the handrail..
This guy has no idea what he is doing
Core drilling is the worst way. That cheap steel will rust out in a few years. Where the steel meets the caulking will shrink and allow water to come through. Freeze thaw and you will get cracks. The steel will rust inside that pocket. Flush mount when done correct is just as strong or more. With those cheap rails the rail will fail before either install method. After that which is easier to replace? Some old methods need to be retired.
Didn't you hear that he got solid metal instead of the cheaper hollow post and they didn't use caulking to hold it in they anchor cement.
@@herbwheeler4470 doesn't matter, still steel. That size of post will easily bend if someone pushes on it. Or worse break the stone. Atleast they could have used aluminum. Which is the standard in railings. Especially with no newel post, that railing will be gone in a few years.
@@kylegrimm8808 Steel is much stronger than aluminum.
@@brianglade848 Russ Wheeler. Days of Thunder
@@themalacastsure if your using 3/8" plate. I could weld up a steel rail that would never move. But in railings, over all features,.price, weight, longevity, aluminum is the best. No argument. Many manufacturers have lifetime warranty on product and finish. No one in steel is offering that not even with powder coating or epoxy finish. Unless its stainless,.and a high quality, every steel handrail will rust out, this one faster because of the install method.
Why don't they make airplanes out of steel?
