We had them installed in a house my father built when I was a kid. Had one in every room. I think they were used MAYBE a dozen times. Only the one in the kitchen was ever really used because it had a built-in radio that we played while eating or working in the kitchen. They were really a waste of money.

I have old telephones from the 60's-70's w/ batteries as intercoms. Works great.
Saw my neighbor do it between his house and garage "man-cave" (bar) b4 we had that term when I was approx. 10 yrs. old. He showed me how to do it a few yrs. later.
He'd pick up receiver,it would ring in house and his wife would bring out food to his card games.😆

All the negative comments about Bob Vila on here....just a reminder: he was the host. His job was to ask 'dumb' questions and to keep things moving. Also, the low budget meant that he had no time for guys to keep talking. They probably had maybe a couple of takes to get it right. There's no music. The lighting and camera setups are quick and cheap.

@@kajem575 I wasn't around during the Bob Vila era of This Old House, but from what I've seen of him, he comes across as rather arrogant and like he was "the boss" even though he wasn't. In contrast, the subsequent hosts (first Steve Thomas and now Kevin O'Connor) took more of a backseat approach to hosting the show. They would introduce the show and ask questions, and then listen as the experts explained. They wanted the host to represent the people who watched the show, who were interested in tackling home improvement projects but weren't sure how to go about it. They didn't want the host to be another expert.
And it wasn't Bob's decision to leave the show; he was fired after he filmed a commercial for a competitor of Home Depot (one of the show's sponsors). And then later, the other guys (Norm, Richard, Tom, etc.) commented that he took up too much screentime.
