The WGBH intro was SO iconic back then. You just knew something good was about to come on.
GET RID OF THE CARPET SO THE DOOR OPENS
SIMPLE BOB
I agree Mr. Oswald....I loved WGBH and This Old House.
Great video showcasing common homeowner repairs! Always liked Bob - especially so when he ditched his woven ragg wool gnome hat that he often wore in the beginning shows! And ole Norm - what can you say - just one great salt-of-the-earth American!
Looked up Bob Vila the other day after learning he left TOH after 10 years of being paid only a meager $200-$800/episode and because he began representing Rickell Home Stores which competed with one of TOH's main underwriters Home Depot. Bob then went on to represent Sears Craftsman tools and began hosting his own show Bob Vila Home Again on HGTV for 16 seasons. His astounding net worth today from these later corporate ventures is 70M. Given Norms career TOH net worth of 2.5M, it sure garners massive respect to Norm and the other TOH guys for stickng with such a low paying venture for all of those years!
soothing background noise.... sounds like saturday morning on the couch with dad and then getting dragged to the hardware store for some project
it just all feels very nostalgic for some reason
I was fortunate to have worked with Norm on projects and when he appeared in our booth at shows over 12 years ago. You will not find a better human than Norm. He would make sure anyone that showed up received an autograph. He & Steve Thomas were hard to beat going out to dinners afterward; I miss them both dearly.
Where has the time gone , I kind of miss this era , I wish we could go back in time !! 👍😢
NORM SOUNDS LIKE HE HAS A COLD OR STUFFY NOSE
Lipstick! Genius.
I dont know about you guys but I thought Bob was an excellent communicator and enjoyed learning from him.
Bob Vila, worlds Most famous onlooker.
the supervisor from which all others were trained
This is the funniest comment I have ever read! I actually woke my wife up from laughing so damn hard and loud. You made my night. Thank you.
@@yamahonkawazuki I hope that was sarcasm 'cause Bob doesn't know anything.
@@markuyehara7880 I know and yeah it was lol
I used to watch This Old House from PBS in Boston while I was growing up in Montreal.
I met Bob years later at an appearance at a Sears store in Toronto.
He autographed his book that my Mother gave me one year for Christmas and I got a picture with him.
Great guy !
Norm is the best! One talented dude!
What About Bob?
Priceless
Don't you just love the piano music kicking in as they show the success on each of their projects?
Hey there. Just wanted to drop a line to say thanks for uploading all these great episodes of "This Old House". I wasn't lucky enough top be able to watch these back in the day bcos we couldn't get these shows here in IRELAND. I'm very grateful to u for putting them up on here for us all to see now. Today is the 1st time I've been able to watch these videos. I was a huge fan of Norm an his New Yankee show so this is an extra bonus too my friend.
I remember all the windows I replaced on AirForce bases in early 80s. Point and glaze. So many windows.
Bahhbila and Nam.. love these guys!
Never seen Richard so young.
He was only that young once. You had to look quick.
thanks for posting.....this particular show really covered a wide range of helpful information.....
I've enjoyed the this old house shows for most of my life.
Some trivia- yes the workshop is the finishing room of the new yankee workshop which was on Russ morashes property behind his house. Which was also used for Lexington gardens on the victory garden. In episodes of the victory garden you can clearly see the sliding barn door and facade that would become well known as the new yankee workshop.
Most of these projects were done on the new yankee workshop building or on the morashes house. Marion morash was the chef on the victory garden. Her cooking segments were shot in her own kitchen- with blue cabinets. Norms kitchen project on the NYW was rebuilding the morashes blue cabinets and renovating their kitchen.
The dimmer switch project in the "bar" in this video is the bar area in the morash kitchen and was rebuilt as part of the NYW kitchen project also. Glimpses into the kitchen on this tape also show marions blue cabinets.
Very Good! All great points that I too know about. I doubt there's a lot of people like you or me that knows This Old House and The New Yankee Workshop as well as that. I subscribed to This Old House Insider and I have been binge watching, I'm currently up to Season 22.
Must have been nice for them to have access to all of that.
I proudly own this video since I was in high school and later burned to a DVD. I also proudly own the first 2 This Old House books from 1980 & '81. Out of all the hosts with Norm Abram, I personally prefer Bob Vila. I was almost done with kindergarten when Bob got himself fired.
Norm was quite the charmer!
Too bad we didn't all apprentice under Bob and Norm. Master carpenters. I will need their help!
Bob V!... Haven't seen this double act in years!...
I didn't realize the plumber that's on the new shows was on the very first one. That's crazy
I had this video when I was a child
Wow! This is cool! Norm was not as chatty back in the day. He's so much more relaxed now on the show!
He's also not on the show as frequently these days. He's 70 years old now and comes on when he's needed during the course of the project as a means of the show easing him into retirement.
Norm and bob never really liked each other
@@tjlovesrachel
Nobody liked Bob the Knob.
@@timepoet77 lolllll
I miss program is treasure, i've learned so much from them
Interesting watching this old original video staring Norm and Bob. Now, with this, I find Norm doing the heavy lifting with Bob turning off all the plugins! Also, for all of use, out here in Video land use the same old turnscrews the homeowner uses. But where is the Licensed Electrition!! Thing sure have changed over the years. Thanks guys !!
I'm old enough to remember that before The New Yankee Workshop was built, the Old Workshop was located in the room where The New Yankee Workshop's Finishing Room is now.
Nice job. Thx.
It's very interesting to see how we did things in the past and how things have changed today
those old cordless drills were awful. you can just hear it...brings back memories
I love my corded Milwaukee... sooo much torque.... but I like my cordless for convenience and portability
I like my cordless ryobi!
Early 1986... the WGBH Boston opening logo is the long one.
Back of the box of your cassette... lol
The origin of "The New Yankee Workshop".
awesome
This is cool. Thank you for the upload. Why is the audio out of sync? Just curious.
Im sure they would say save the old growth lumber. I need special main breakers that shunt the so called "Neutral" conductor. Might as well provide GFCI/AFCI protection for the entire home. If the circuit keeps tripping call your local electrician!
My god that intro... Like injecting the 80s right into my cerebrum.
Use to watch this on pbs
Channel 11 around 6
09:16
Theif only need break that one pane to unlock that door! HA!!
ALL U NEED
ALL THAT WORK FOR NOTHING
ONE BREAK AND THE THIEF IS A RICH DUDE
9.21 CANT OPEN THE DOOR
THROW THE RUG OUT STUPID
JEEZ
That's what they did at my house.
Now, if you're going to eject the warp core...
bob did a lot of watching
Use a chisel to "excavate the wood."
This is a great video, but that new lock on the backdoor offers little in the way of security. A quick smash of the glass and a bad guy can reach in and turn the deadbolt knob. Is that deadbolt just cosmetic?
9:13 Just get rid of the carpet!
Wait so all you have to do to break in is break the glass, reach in and open the door from the inside?
What's the point of a deadbolt?
I have been an electrician for over twenty years and the old timers would cut the ground wire off the romex, AC, BX, THHN, and say that will just cause problems down the road. That ground prong would get cut off quick also.
You are the second electrician I have heard say this. So this really was common practice? What problems would it cause? Wouldn't it be a safety issue to eliminate that wire?
WOODEN GUTTERS!!!!!!!!!!! AWFUL MAINTANCE PROBLEM IS RIGHT ALSO FALLS APART OVER TIME!!!!!!!!
COPPER GUTTERS TURN GREEN OVER TIME AND CHEAPLY MADE- ALSO CAN LEAK TOO
EVER THOUGH 3 OR 4 BUCKS OR SO A POUND
WOULD DO PVC
HAD TO SELL MY LATE GRANDPARENTS HOME HERE IN UCONN,CT ALL SOCKETS WERE 2 PRONG BX CABLE ALL HAD TO BE REPLACED
THE SOCKETS ONLY WERE LIKE 350 DOLLARS. WIRING WAS 200 PLUS LABOR
HOUSE WAS BUILT 1951 SO EVERY THING WAS REPLACED
PLUS NEW SEPTIC WAS 10000 PLUS RADON FOR THE WATER WAS BAD
THAT WAS 2500 DOLLARS ADDS UP
In the event of a short circuit power goes to ground and trips the breaker or blows a fuse.
PVC was probably still in the lab when this video was made.
@ 52:00 I hope there's a better floor sander....that one is a back killer.
101 that door is even weaker now :/ I know they were not exactly thinking that way back then. The only thing most locks do is make it so the would-be b&e person makes more noise on entry... Still true today
Can someone answer me one question, okay, two? What was the deal with wallpaper, and why were the 80s so cheesey? Classic greatness
I remember when Rich was his father's helper and didn't speak
Richard with hair! I had forgot about that!!
At first I didn’t know it was Richard
Now I realize how much he has aged
Getting old .... the classic plumbers lament.
On 104 listen to all those stripped screws from installing the weather stripping.. Yikes.
The drills weren’t variable speed back then. Astounding job considering the equipment.
Surprised to see Bob use a wing nut like a pleb. You're supposed to pre-twist the wires before putting on the nut.
3/8" carriage bolt to hold joist to post? No hangers? Can't do that now.
Holy mackerel no battery powered tools I'm a professional mechanic and still have dozens of electric and pneumatic tools my sons make fun of me but the battery stuff has come a LONG way from when they first came out!
Norm: "Let's talk shop safety"
Bob: "Let's meet the homeowners"
NORM WAS A GOOFBALL BUT GOOD MAN VERY GOOD KNOWLEDGE
BOB WAS A FREAK
THERE WAS ANOTHER GUY NAMES STEVE ON THIS OLD HOUSE??
WHAT EVER HAPPEN TO HIM???????????????????????????
HAD GLASSES
Edward Koepke His name was Steve Thomas. I couldn't stand him as the host. He just seemed totally wrong for the job. I heard he's an author now.
OH REALLY ? THOMAS WAS LAST NAME!!!!!!!!!! HE WAS A NUISSANCE!
AUTHOR WOW DIDNT KNOW THAT
2 PRONG OUTLET!!!!! THEY STILL SELL THOSE TODAY SEEN THEM AT HOME DEPOT . THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A CODE ISSUE NO GROUND HOLE
Norm, is that a half inch drill you are using for this job?
Norm, how big is a half inch bit?
Stop asking stupid questions and pay attention Bob.
does anyone know where to find those style of door locks i don't exactly know what to Google
Sam Perinetti thanks that's great
103 screen 15:20 , "at the screen shop, that would have been a $20 bill"
Please eject the tape. Oh don’t forget to rewind.
Oakwood
Who else cringed when Bob volunteered to go to the panel to shut off the power to the circut?
There is a “Vila” on every job site. “Clipboard commander”
I NOTICE BOB NEVER GETS DIRTY OR SWEATY ON MOST JOBS
old>new
24:19 just a nuisance? he didn't know the point of the ground back then? LOL
TO PROTECT IT FROM SHOCK OR FIRE
@@ekop1778 I was not asking, I am well aware...
He said using the adapters is a nuisance, he didn't say anything about not knowing what the ground is for.
When programming gave information
I wonder the house the video was filmed in is that Bob Villa's house?
It was the house of creator Russell Morash.
@@timepoet77The Late Russell Morash now!
norm old workshop in 1986
Was better on public TV. The audio was in sync with the video.
Bob was a host - Norm knew what the hell he was talking about. Look which one is still around.
What's your point? Bob ended up hosting another show called Home Again, and he still has a presence on CZcams.
@@bfsgman setting the bar so high on supervising. seen both shows cant really complain about either one
Bob Vila was a jerk off. A no nothing no it all.
Wouldn't be easier to use their lithium ion battery drill?wow he did have a cordless driil.I didn't know they were available in the 70's.This is the late 70's right?
You mean Ni-Cad battery...
its funny that Norms and Richards voices are different .
I noticed too
To bad the original Crockets Victory Garden don't exist
"Cold air infiltration"...I hate that !!
I used to have it but my vsr and video tapes are gone
Edward Koepke Your absolutely wrong about that. Bob made less than $200 per episode so Russ Morash encourage him to do product endorsements to make money. Bob always cleared his endorsements with Russ first. He was going to do some commercials for a small Home Improvement chain and as always he cleared it with Russ. Bob signed the contract, afterwards Russ was contacted by one of the This Old House sponsors and told Russ to stop Bob or they would pull their sponsorship from the show. Russ called Bob into his office and told him not to do the commercials. Bob said okay fine but you've got to give me and indemnity to protect me from being sued when I break the contract. Russ refused and told Bob if he did the commercials he was fired. So Bob walked off the show. Ironically that Indemnity would not have cost Russ much money. Later Bob said he was happy to leave because he didn't agree with Russ on the direction the show was going. So you see you're completely wrong. If you do your research you will find that Bob was well-liked on the show. It was Russ Morash everyone hated.

He made up for it later.

The TOH series with Bob Vila and Norm Abram is what the popular 90s series 'Home Improvement' was based upon. I can only imagine what notoriously narcissistic Vila thought about his bumbling Tim Taylor character portrayed by Tim Allen! lol
Bob probably doesn't care if it got him on network TV. Vila was up for anything that would help him get endorsements and make a buck.
Splendidly to see Woodprix have new plans which helped me save some money and energy for this construction.
WERE DOES IT SAY THE YEAR???? is it 85??? 86???
At the end it has a copyright of 1986...
Bob Vila couldn't change a light bulb!
7:05 Norm is a hound.
20 dollar bill at the screen shop lol just spend the money
Value of $20 in 1979 compared to now would be $72.83.
@@tomarnold5426 I have a pretty good feeling the glass shop in my town would charge at least $100 for that.
As a millennial I never had the privilege of watching these shows when they first aired but I’d take these home improvement shows over the garbage HGTV and DIY Network show now a days with those stupid flipping home shows. If only these classic shows were on a streaming service but I can’t find them on Netflix or Prime or Hulu 😕
How old are you
Some bad audio/video synch issues, at least at the start.
That 1850s bar room music is painful to listen to lol
