- The MLB All-Star Game once ended with resounding, deafening boos from the crowd as the fans exited the stadium in disgust. How did this happen and how did it wind up changing the game forever?

Miss when they would wear they own jerseys in the ASG.
Same here.
I miss when they did that In the NBA too
Absolutely. It was a sight to behold.
Until they switch back, I refuse to watch!
I was just about to type the same thing and found this was the top comment!
If you didn’t know who Tori Hunter was before he robbed Barry you just didn’t watch enough baseball
I remember in last years all-star game, they said if it was a tie after 9 innings, they would play a home run derby to see who would win. Sounds pretty ridiculous at first but it’s better than ending in a tie
It doesn't sound any crazier than a shootout in hockey, good idea
@@estellegrignon Hockey should do what they do in the playoffs. Just play overtime until someone scores. I don’t like shootouts at all
@DaVictonator probably too strenuous during the middle of an 82 game season, imagine the injury reports
It would have been cool if they let the position players pitch. Like imagine watching Barry bonds strike out the side then hit a 450 ft bomb.
Barry Ohtani
Could tell by the title exactly what this was about. Great video topic that I’ve never seen anyone talk about except my father many years ago.
I worked that day as an usher there
Torii was one of my favorite Twins growing up. Brad Radke and Johann Santana were also up there for me!
Same for me! Wish Tori could have stayed his whole career in Minnesota.
Torii Hunter and Jim Edmonds...sources of some of the best SportsCenter highlights of all time.
I worked as an usher that year at Miller Park and it was fun but so hot. At the end I had a beer bottle wiz past my head they were so pissed. I had a great time all 3 days. We had a huge thunderstorm during the derby and there was a waterfall b first base. I saw the Torii Hunter robbery I was there and saw it. There was a cool Japanese camera man there for that and he was so excited to get that
The All-Star game when I was a kid was a holiday to me!!! I looked as forward to it every year as much as my birthday or Christmas. I've always liked making lists of fantasy dream teams for the MLB, NFL, and pro wrestling. I started watching sports in 1974, and the All-Star game was like my list came to life. Not only the great players, but seeing stars from every team in their uniform! Remember that back then, we got TWO games (Saturday afternoon Game of the Week, and Monday Night Baseball) a week to watch for the most part.
Taking away the different teams uniform imho is just another way to try and sell you something else.
LET THEM WEAR THEIR TEAM JERSEYS!!!!!!!!!!
TORII FN HUNTER!
With the runner on 2nd to start extras, ties happen less often.
And apparently, there’s a rule now in the All-Star game where if it goes long enough in extras, they go to an ad-hoc Home-Run derby to decide a winner.
Wow, I knew for a while there the ASG deteremined WS home field advantage but I didn't know it was all the way until 2016.
2003-2016 that's a long time for a stupid rule. Best regular season record makes much more sense.
Funny this popped up cuz I'm literally looking out a window at this stadium right now
I wish they would go back to wearing the jerseys from their team instead of nl/Al jerseys
0:23 - unless is soccer, then you want to spend 2 hours for 0:0 tie...
"The Night the MLB All-Star Game Changed For A Short Period" would be more accurate ;)
as i was told by the video man "literally anything"
1:34 Shuma Gorah's theme from Marvel Superheroes, nice
3:52 Banjo and Kazooie, game show theme
Definitely glad they changed the rule back, as a Rangers fan who watched the butterfly effect video about this exact thing
I think what they should have done is change the rules regarding for substitutions for just the all-star game and allow players who have come out to be able to come back in again. I mean the all-start game after all, is an exhibition and shouldn't be held to the same strict rules as regular season games.
Actually by the same logic of it being an exhibition, they could've just let it end in a tie. Again, it is just an exhibition game.
taking this time to say...
a great defensive play (like robbing a home run or throwing someone out at the plate from the outfield) > a home run. anyone can hit a homerun. not anyone can make a spectacular catch or throw someone out at the plate from the wall.
I didn't realize it at the time... but this was one of the final nails in their coffin for me.
Just remembered the card-and-dice game MLB Showdown released a special 2002 All-Star Game edition, so you could play it out and have a winner. I think I still have mine somewhere.
Nice vid man! Really enjoyed that!
If I’m the AL pitcher in the 11th, I’d just be asking the batter what they want then throwing it right down the middle
Sounds like my entire lineup in Triple Play 2002
Bring back own team jerseys (or design asg jerseys more unique to each team, like maybe the yankees in navy pinstripes on a grey background in an NL park)
Great EmpLemon quote
It would be hella shady, even for an exhibition game, but I feel like they could’ve just called the pitchers over and told ‘em to huck some meatballs down the middle 😂
“Hey freddie, throw a cookie so we don’t all have to get our asses chewed for years for this”
Good ol green Simpson guy makes a surprise appearance, I click like.
Great video bro I remember this vividly
SRS got bgm from Marvel Super Heroes in this video. Bro knows what's up.
Yeah they definitely could've planned for that ahead of time. I feel like most fans would've understood a limit on extra innings for the ASG if the MLB didn't just make it up in the middle of the 11th
Only thing crazier about this game was Shea Hillenbrand being in it.
Can’t wait till it’s back in Milwaukee
I remember the media shitstorm that took place after this.
As a Rangers fan, I try not to think about how we likely would’ve won the WS in 2011 had the NL just walked it off in ‘02
I always thought they should have allowed the subbed players to come back in rather than calling a tie. Though in retrospect maybe that’s hard on pitchers.
Sammy Sosa the only player in history to have 62 plus HR's in 3 seasons
and to lead the league in none of those 3 seasons...
I was one of the ones booing when the late Bob Betts made the announcement in the bottom of the 11th.
I always say that I'm still waiting for the 12th Inning to start.
Speaking of 2017's best record, which it should have been for the past 100+ years of baseball, it's not like a team would have POSSIBLY cheated at their home stadium during that World Series, yet had to play game 7 on the road, in the other team's stadium, giving that other team some crazy idea that their pitcher didn't meltdown during the most important game of their lives didn't really matter or something.
Look, I'm not saying the Astros didn't cheat, but to pretend the Dodgers didn't choke away 3 games in that series (Games 2, 5 and 7) wasn't something ether.
Anyway, back to the point at hand, I was fine with a tie since it was an exhibition game. But on that matter, baseball is a game where there's no real time limit. Everyone plays until someone leads the other team after 9 innings or, in the case there's a tie after that, until someone leads at the end of each subsequent inning. If the managers are willing to not put themselves in a position to win a game, then fans have every right to be upset on both sides. So in this case, like you said, unlike the NFL, people are going to get upset if not angry. Plus, because of the All-Star game having a break for it, the next day everyone in Major Leauge Baseball has a day off. I get you can't bring in someone who's likely pitched more than they normally would, but it's kind of annoying that people want to see the best, and in 2002, we didn't get that.
Final point, how is Bud Selig in the Hall of Fame and people like Bonds and Clemens aren't? Bud let the steroid era happen under his watch and didn't lift a finger to stop it until way too late. The only good things I can think of Bud doing is having the Wild Card put into action and retiring Jackie Roberston's 42 MLB wide. Otherwise, he nearly contracted the league and forced a work stoppage during the 1994 season (sorry Expos fans).
Ok, rant over.
Literally anything
Where baseball has changed is the teams discontent of live fans in favor of merchandise sales and royalties.
Hearing Emps voice took me for a shock lol
9:02 At least he does that, unlike Manfraud
This was the last time i watched an all star game. I know they made it so the all star game mattered because of this, but this ruined it for me. I still watch the homerun derby though.
i love the succession theme song in the background
I remember watching this All Star Game. I had no problem with it ending in a tie. It was an exciting exhibition. One of the most memorable games. However, Bud Selig overreacted by making the league who wins the ASG gets home field advantage. It really wasn’t that serious and showed he knows nothing about baseball.
They should have let position players pitch. That is always fun to watch, and in an all star game? C'mon that would be legendary
Knew this was gonna be a good video when the first thing i see is the play- GO BEARS!
They need to go back to wearing their own uniforms 💯💯
Love the emplemon intro
Carl Hubble could have won it for the National League.
I feel like if it was just for the fans at that point and it didn’t mean anything, why not throw a position player on the mound 🤷🏼♂️
And THAT'S how 14 years became "forever"
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
Fun fact that road padre uniform that will myers wore didn’t even exist. They made that just for him specifically for that all star game
10:46
Literally anything I want
2016 all star game was supposed to be in Baltimore
I had no idea they changed it back (removing WS home team)... huh...
What a massive overreaction by everyone who was chanting "let them play". You went to an All-Star game. You saw ALL the All-Stars. You got EXTRA baseball. Let WHO play? There was nobody left, you idiots!
What’s a topic on a Yogurt Bowl? Or did he say “topping?”
Why not have the position players pitch? Or bring out a pitcher who was already taken out just for this game?
The steroid sword is dull as fck! I don't care about that BORING nonsense! Great video! Thank you-Cheers!
It's actually quite silly to think teams win or lose based on the order they play their home games at. Some teams have better records on the road. Should bring back the rule. I have fond memories of the 2008 all star game ending at 1 am.
as a brewers fan, i approve this video
They can't just have an impropmtu home run derby in the 10th, and the team with the most homers wins?
That was why it should have been concluded. It could have been with trash and other things thrown on the field.
Bonds was great before roids.
literally anything
Burger King foot lettuce
This is why I don’t like Bud Selig.
allstar games have never been more than gimmicks. nothing matters from the allstar weekend at all.
it is supposed to be just for fun. but tell that to someone watching 5 hours of a show to find out both teams are losers...
Literally anything in the comments
IMO I don’t think it wasn’t Selig’s fault. The managers shouldn’t have blown through their players that fast. 🙄
but the idea of an allstar game is to show-off your all stars. not to win the game.
@@dumdawgpro Like the former even mattered.
why not have position players pitch?
Ma ma ma ma Mitchell
Screw the DH rule
I get it
I juiced and I didn’t make it to the big leagues and I can tell you most everyone I know who tried to make it did doesn’t make you a ball player
So lets say an American League team wins 105 games, the National league team wins 88 games but the National league team gets home field in the WS because some pitcher from the worst team in the AL, say the A's has to be on the roster and gives up the game winning HR. This was so stupid.
Ahh back when you had to win in extra and werent handed a man in scoring position...
Torri Hunter was on ESPN e very day, dude, get that introduction to the world blasphemy out of your mouth
you are correct. but not everyone watches sportcenter that watches sports. a lot of people watched sportcenter before highlight clips were available. but the amount of people watching the allstar game dwarfs that.
Here's a brilliant idea.
The game doesn't matter. So the roster number doesn't matter.
Have every ball club send 3 pitchers, and have 100 pitchers on standby for a chance to appear.
Ffs.
comment of the commentor in the comment pipe line!!
The ASG was rendered useless with interleague play...
The all star game deciding home field advantage was the best. It should come back!
Play Ballll
Bonds The GOAT
they should of used bench players to pitch but bud was an ass
'
I wish we brought back the stipulation of the winner with the respective league hosting the World Series.
God no. That was such a despicable idea. It made no sense. It could completely invalidate a team's entire season of work.
No
