    In his Historical Baseball Abstract (2000) entry on Belle, Bill James lists 10 good things to say about him. Of course, the first and most important was that he could hit. James cracked me up with two of them: he has never been on the Jerry Springer Show, and he has never praised Hitler or Saddam Husseim.

    An interesting fact. Before Belle signed in Baltimore, the Yankees were ready to not only sign him, but let franchise legend Bernie Williams go to do so. But Baltimore swooped in and grabbed him.
    Bernie ended up resigning for less than what Boston and Arizona were offering in the end.

  • @Jimifan57

    Former sportswriter here. You learn to get a thick skin in the locker room (or clubhouse), so you put up with a lot of crap (especially in baseball, for some reason). But Belle was something else. I honestly thought he had mental issues. I was doing a story about Kenny Lofton back when both were with Cleveland (Kenny had just made his first All Star team) and was gathering quotes from teammates about it. Belle had two lockers in the clubhouse (one for his clothes and the other for his towels, shower stuff, etc.), and when you tried to ask him questions, he would look right past you with that stone face and just keep doing what he was doing. He would (intentionally, I always believed) go for something in the other locker and just body you out of the way (basically walking right through you) without reacting at all, as if you weren't there. That guy had problems.

    • @rancidcrawfish
      @rancidcrawfish Pƙed 17 dny +5

      Or..sports writers in the locker rooms are usually annoying and in the way. Sounds like he just didn't wanna talk or be bothered.

    • @Alexander_Grant
      @Alexander_Grant Pƙed 17 dny +5

      @@rancidcrawfish My dad knew him growing up, and that was his theory too. Maybe not this guy in particular, but some media members were out to get him. There's plenty of sportwriters who intentionally provoke these players to get stories and that's probably what made Belle so antagonistic towards them.

    • @fr2ncm9
      @fr2ncm9 Pƙed 17 dny

      It was brought up that he grew up in a town that had a deep history of racism. I'm sure that played some part. You also have to wonder what his home life was like. It seems like he tended to be a perfectionist. Top grades in school, and an outstanding Baseball career. It seems like he wanted to be the best at everything.

    • @Jimifan57
      @Jimifan57 Pƙed 17 dny +3

      @@fr2ncm9 I didn't hold it against him. Like I said, I figured he had some deep psychological issues and I wasn't going to judge him on that. Guys like Will Clark, and Barry Bonds on the other hand, were pricks just because they thoroughly enjoyed being pricks. And they were pricks to everyone - teammates, clubhouse workers, the media, etc. They reveled in it.

    • @Jimifan57
      @Jimifan57 Pƙed 17 dny +2

      @@Alexander_Grant Yeah, there are a few media people who like to provoke players, but they're usually the ones who don't go in the clubhouse very often. The everyday media, who are in there every day, try to keep on decent terms with the players, if only for survival's sake. The problem is when the team's biggest stars are a-holes, and you have to approach them pretty often. That's when the job sucks.

    Baltimore Orioles sports announcer Tom Marr disliked Albert Belle intensely and objected to his signing with the Orioles. Bell likely would have gone into the Hall if he had played longer because he was an awesome hitter as well as a cork bat cheater. Belle had two solid seasons with the Birds and then retired. His second season was marred with injuries but the numbers he had put up were good for the amount of games he played. Belle homered in the final at-bat of his major-league career, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on October 1, 2000.

    as a fan, i respected/feared Albert Belle's bat, but i didn't want him on my team. two stories, both involving Bernie Williams
    story 1: when Bernie Williams was nearing free agency, the talk was that the Yankees had leverage because if they don't sign him, they can just go out and pick up Albert Belle. Yankees fans did not like that idea. we chanted "Bernie don't go, Stay Bernie Stay" with all our hearts from the bleachers
    story 2: even though i didn't care much for the guy, i think Belle was unfairly maligned for launching Fernando Viña into the East River. i couldn't tell you if it was that same year, the year before, or the year after, but Bernie Williams shoved 2B Carlos Baerga to break up the double play, Baerga tried to make the play at first, didn't, and no one blinked an eye, presumably because Bernie wasn't 210 lbs of pure angry muscle. it was the same act, but Angry Albert threw his shoulder into it

He's one of several players that proves the Hall votes should be taken away from the vindictive idiot writer's & given to the people. Remember it's not the Hall of nice sweet quire boys it's the Baseball Hall of fame. and you should only get in if your numbers support the standard & his clearly did.

    Honestly seems like a classic case of schizophrenia onset. Happens a lot to guys in their 20s sadly.

      Maybe, but all things considered jumping from "consistently angry and volatile" to schizophrenic is a bit of a reach. Especially considering it'd be out of place for us random commenters to guess at something so vital to a person's health.
      That said, anger issues can be a thing on their own, and even bipolar 1 or 2 are much more reasonable to try and project, but I really think this is a guy with demons best left to himself rather than us idiots.

    There’s really no proof that any racial slurs were said. Belle was a great player put him in HOF.

    There is an obvious mental health issue in this case. Although there may have been some racial issues early on, the video is trying to use that for too much of an excuse for extremely bad behavior. When you are having issues with your own teammates and fans and later on, your girlfriends, etc., even into your 50's, the problem is not everyone else. Stop trying to still make excuses for people when the obvious issue was that he needed to see a mental health professional and get some real help. When you're a pro athlete, you can't chase kids around the neighborhood for egging your house on Halloween, especially when you didn't even hand out candy.
    Competitiveness can cause a lot of us to get angry and throw things and be upset with people for no reason, I know, I was one of those people when playing sports and it did help me to play better a lot more than people may think. "Playing angry" is a good thing for a lot of people but this is an example of someone that had/has serious underlying issues. Hopefully, for his sake and for the people around him, he has either mellowed enough or gotten the help he needs. I watched Albert Belle's entire career and he was a great player but that alone does not make everything better.

    When you’re as bad a person as Belle, whatever racial element involved goes out the window. Dick Allen had to face all the same issues Belle did if not worse, and yet he never tried running over kids with his car.
