As I mentioned this video was a budget build as part of the project with the Hardtail Party CZcams Channel. I was able to build this bike complete for under $300 US. The Scott itself I picked up for an incredible $10 and then the Specialized StumpJumper donor bike, with the hole in it, for $75. The rest of the parts, new and used, were all purchased to keep the build under my budget of $300, I did have to search for a lot of great deals though to make it work.

Another beautiful build! You have my 5 year old daughter telling me that we need to 'give old things new life' when I'm working in my basement. She loves your videos.
Lol 😂 that’s awesome. Warms my heart. Thanks for sharing.
I knew I was inviting the jedi of bike restorations when I reached out to you. I'm so glad you joined this project. We had an absolute blast and it wouldn't have been the same without you. Thanks for the kind words, for sharing your knowledge and expertise, and being a rad human. I can't wait for the next one. I'm amazed at your knowledge and skill repurposing a bike so well for so little money.
For those wondering what the challenge was... We each had a budget of $300 to build, restored and maintain a bike to take on gooseberry mesa to answer the question: can you have fun on a $300 bike? Old shovel knocked it out of the park on his build. More footage coming soon...
Thanks Steve. It was awesome fun. Keep up the great work with your channel and I can’t wait to see you video/s on all the hilarity and just fun from this project.
Good choice inviting the Old Shovel. Love that you challenged people to build up a low cost rig and ride it Steve.
-Nick
This only shows, you don’t always need a new bike to enjoy biking. Most of the time “old is still gold”... i hope you could have more cool projects to come... btw, I’m both subscriber of yours, Hardtail Party and OldShovel. Thanks alot for bringing us good content thru your channels... 👊😜👍
Hey man, about 6 months ago I started working in a bikeshop after losing my job as a bartender due to the pandemic going on atm.. I didn´t know anything about bikes at that point but I got on well with the owner of the place so I kinda got into it pretty quickly.
I started looking up interesting and/or informative content online to get to know the whole topic more and collect knowledge for the job. In that process I´ve also seen your channel a few times.
After binge watching so many of your videos now I gotta say you are one of, if not the most amazing and humble person I have seen on this platform ever! The content you make is so honest and pure in it´s own way and even tho you are always a part of your videos, you´re never the focus. You always give these bikes the spotlight and show how much potential there is in something that others wouldn´t even look at. I love the message, positivity and kindness you communicate through this.
The Santa Cruz christmas special, the restoration of the Gary Fisher with your son and the 98 voodoo are by far my favorite videos of yours! What you have built here on YT is the perfect example of what all this social media is for, spreading a message that is worth to be heard, educating and entertaining people in the best way possible.
Basically I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the hours of education, wholesomeness and the message you send me aswell as thousand if not millions of other people to be kind and give old things new life!
Greetings and best wishes during a difficult time for all of us from Hamburg, Germany!
Martin
Martin, thank you so much for your kind words. I’m glad you’ve connected with my content the way you have. Thanks for sharing your story.
I can’t believe I just spent 20 minutes watching - and relaxing to - this video. That’s 20 minutes I could have spent cleaning my hard tail! Bravo-Zulu, sir....job well done on resuscitating new life into an old bike!
Am i the only one that finds these bike repairs pleasing to watch, and I also learn how to repair a bike. Good bike you have here amazing :) wicked jealous of the specialized stump jumper
I wanted to say thank you for opening my eyes back to my passion of giving new life to bikes that would otherwise be lost without purpose 😊.
When he first was painting i was like what the heck is he doing. When it was done tho it was incredibly beautiful and amazing. 👍👍👍👍😱😱
Literally the coolest bike I’ve ever seen
Lol I expected that also. It’s more fun with the mystery 😁
It's interesting how you should think "in reverese", that is: you first mask and paint the layer you want to be the most OUTER one!!
What I love about your vids is the fact you never use a stoopid torque wrench. You can feel when it's just tight enough, awesome
The only thing I ever torque is full suspension rear pivot bolts as some need to be threadlocked and torched to remove.. The rest is two finger torquing .
Love it.
A note on the shifters and derailleur compatibility, since I've also had to deal with this on my projects. For rear derailleurs Shimano road 10 speed and under (excluding the current tiagra and many of the dura aces, not sure about ultegras) has a 1:1.67 pull ratio (what shimano calls 1:2 actuation). Shimano mountain 9 speed or under (non dyna sys) has the same 1:1.67 ratio. This means they are all intercompatible and I have used 7 speed road sti shifters on a mountain derailleur.
Road front derailleurs have always used a different pull to mountain ones, but I got mine to work with a road shifter by routing the cable differently.
I don’t believe that the sram gx derailleur and Shimano Slx 10 speed should work together. Chain and cassette are generally fine to mix but shifter and derailleur should have the same pull ratio and ideally brand because Shimano pulls different then sram.
@@kirkhobson4417 Yeah, the stuff I was saying only applies to Shimano (and shimano compatibles).
@@kirkhobson4417 they do, at least sometimes. For more details: blog.artscyclery.com/science-behind-the-magic/science-behind-the-magic-drivetrain-compatibility/
Love Steve at the Hardtail Party. Awesome to see you two collaborate.
Can't wait for the collab video on Hardtail Party. I started watching both your channels only recently. As a lover of old and new mountain bikes, it's great seeing your restorations and upgrades, and seeing on HP how bikes have progressed.
Ooooooh...dreamy. That must have been a great ride. These bikes still rip in the right and stoked hands.
Nice looking build as always, the ride looks like a load of fun and nice to hear the honesty regarding the gearing system. Thanks for another inspiring build all the best Andy
Awesome sir , in the process building a old one myself for my youngest son, these videos give me inspiration every time
Nice to have 1 restored bike you made ..
Dope collaboration. Love both your channels and stoked to see this project!
Yay, I love both of your channels. Great vid
The Hardtail Party seems to be a very cool event to meet nice people! Your built was very nice too! Big hug!
Love the paint work. The red highlights all over the bike are great. Very well executed.
Such a cool build! I love those old school top end rim brakes. Literally my dream bike 💕
🤔 umm v-brakes aren’t “old school” centre-pull cantilever brakes are old school
This made me miss my old GT mtbike that was stolen...
Love these builds,im on upgrading a gt,thought i was done with the paintwork on the frame but after watching these vids im wanting to try your ideas, keep up the good work👍
Another piece of art 🔥 from nothing into something , I admire your hard work of doing restoration sir , always waiting for another bike restoration ,keep safe and godbless , Chao
a mtb tandem ! gosh, that is so dope
What a great paint effect, love it, unique
Love Hardtail Party! Cool to see a collab
Awesome restoration awesome video and awesome colors
Zajebisty projekt. Czekam na więcej
I'm just putting 105 11 speed on my 30 year old Cannondale 3.0 1" pepperoni frame - it's the black one with luminous green splashed paint. Converted to aheadstem and carbon bars, it rocks! Nuke proof and Ringle hubs, baby.
That paint job is insane. Nice job as always
love your builds that you have done since I have been watching your CZcams videos and learned so much more about bicycle building, now feel like will tackle a build myself and found a GRANT series 4000 in the garbage..cheers...
Классный! У меня у самого раритетный Scott 97 года с ободными гидравлическими тормозами и седлом Selle Italia Flight на карбоновых рейлах. Иногда его выгуливаю. Наверно льщу себе, но народ его рассматривает)
nice colab! great results!
love the creative paint job
Jeden z lepszych projektów. Peace.
Use a soldering iron and silver solder to do your cable ends
Cool build! I love the vintage ride idea. Especially at Gooseberry. Great video
Totally Rad designing with your decals! Cool!
Love the paint job!!
Omg this disappeared ealier glad its back :) you rock!!🤘
Yah I had an error on the first version. I had to fix it and re upload.
@@oldshovel i figured it wasn't due to any profanity or copyright ect ;). Always glad to see a new oldshovel !!
In Greece we love Scotts.Great job.
Great share...love the paint design...keep it moving ✌
Nice work!
I could watch your videos allday they inspire me. I've been watching your videos for a month. I have already collected 15 old steel bikes from the nineties . My wife is a little confused why I keep bringing them home. Picked up a Gary Fisher marlin today off of market place for $80 looks new. SCORE
Thanks for the paint tip!
I love spotting the components that were likely upgraded over the years, specifically the brakes on this one which were certainly cantilever when new.
That paint job... When you started wrapping around those stickers... I also thought about skipping, since I was so damn curious! But I waited and... It was worth it! I Quite like how this bike came out. Keep going like this. Love from Italy.
Paint looks good from here!
Amazing as always 🔥
YOU'RE A BEAST. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
I’ll be honest at first I was wondering if a disc mount was getting welded but I’m glad you didn’t. Love this build, super functional and cool. I’ve never see linear pull brakes that look like those.
Love these ASMR builds
You have really inspired me to rebuild my Cannondale prophet rather than replace it! Love the videos
Bike looks cool mate! Those trails remind me of brisbane, Australia (though I live in New Zealand now). Love the vids bro.
Nice bike! I love the 26's!! I think thats so nice bikes!!
you should try to find and restore another old Kona, like a full suspension something. maybe a Coilair or Stinky. I think it would be really interesting and it could be a really cool build. also I love the videos and you do awesome work, keep it up because what your doing is absolutely amazing!
Nice!!! It amazes me how you turn these old bikes into master pieces.
sick bike dude
I love older bikes i ride a handbuilt bike made in 2007 not very old but i love it
Dude it's a simple fact that an old LX don't work properly because of the upper pulley , change that to a 9speed pulley from a newer derailleur and it will work properly (but you will need some small washers !) ! Have fun ! Awesome build btw you realy need a propper paint booth !!!!
As always Mr Oldshovel another great build by your self, however I have some great news for your my bike build is now complete and after doing a couple of changes to the single speed set up I can honestly say that I am super excited on how it has made me feel, and at this moment in time I will have to be patient with my other two bike builds and when they are complete I will let you know.
Just to let you know that my single speed set up rides like a dream and was 42 teeth up front by 16 in the rear and is now 32 teeth up front by 18 in the rear, I did this change as where I live in the U.K. it’s quite hilly and now with this gear ratio then I will be able to climb the hills around me without getting off to push and I am looking forward to seeing your next build, stay safe and have lots of fun riding your bikes.
Todo un artista este señor
I watched hardtail party's $300 bikes vs gooseberry mesa. It was full of awesomeness to the bikes, trails and the people participated. Hope I'll see you videos too.
It's amazing how bikes that are 10 to 20+ years old have design and components that still haven't cascaded into today's entry level bikes on the market: Grip/twist shifters, 7 speed freewheels, ball and cup bottom brackets, solid axels. There must be an endless stockpile of these components that will poison the bike supply for years to come and pollute landfill as these bikes get left outside and abandoned when they seize up.
I hope you try the sticker shock technique again. I also love you shows the misses as well as hits in your work. Both craft and art.
I love your bike restorations and it has inspired me to tackle two 1980's vintage Trek road bikes that I picked up at local yard sales for under $20 ea. over the past year; replacing headsets and bottom brackets, even stripping down shimano rear derailleurs has been straight forward. I can now even rebuild wheels when the hubs or rims are shot/bent. On your mtn bike rebuilds have you ever stripped down the front forks and rebuilt them? Same for the actual trigger shifters. The rock shox's on my first 26 mtb refurb are in a sorry state! The shifters I think just need taking apart, cleaning and new lube. I'm learning lots from your paint jobs and now my wife has a cricut for her crafting I'm all set to do my own stencils/masks etc.
Dude, this paint job is sick! I love it! Love watching your restorations. Little surprised you didn’t restore the crank arms a little better. Removing old paint and repainting or finishing, regardless, bike was awesome!!
🤙Good job, bro.!🤘
Yet another reminder that I need to build myself a retro cx or mtb... 😪😅 Great video, as always!
Here I am once again... I see Oldshovel vid, I like Oldshovel vid
You are the master of the bicycle workshop. Very good work, great. Although I was lost with so much sticker at first. :-)
Great video. Aa usual
..GREAT RESTO/REBUILD. STAY SAFE...
I like watching your video !! Soooo great!!
beautiful bike
Makes me wanna build bikes!
Wonderful...greetings from Germany..👍👍✌️
Nice video, it is funny that we had similar things in are minds, because i also restoring a scott cst at the moment, it is really a great bike. Mine will be original as it possible.
All I ride are vintage steel hardtails especially from the 90s. I have a a 97 Rocky Mountain Blizzard, 96 Diamondback Axis TR, 97 Rocky Mountain Altitude T.O., 99 Voodoo Bizango, 99 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo and a Dirt Research Kenai. All have that magic carpet ride feel of steel that I love. I also have a Schwinn Homegrown yeti designed bike that although made of aluminum rides like steel with the epicenter wishbone seatstays and 26.8 seatpost helps
Daughter ‘hesitant’ to say it doesn’t work. Now that is an awesome girl...good job!
No Oury!!!??? Shock and awe... haha much love from Australia
I just recently discovered your channel. I'm interested in repainting my hard tail and came across your work in my pursuit of learning more about how to do it. You are doing what I want to do: restore old bicycles. My hope is to be able to do that and donate them. I'm stoked to find out about paint.bike.
I saw Steve's videos not long ago, and it's really cool to see your video on the same subject. Thanks for sharing your work!
I jumped on CZcams with the intention of watching a specific video, then I saw this in my feed.
Now I can't even remember the original video I was after.
Lol awesome. I’ve done that before also.
Hi bro!
Today i finished the first chapter for give life again a very special fork,Marzocchi MX Comp 125mm.
Work paint, new oil seals, new dustguards, oil fork...
I think i make a good job.
That fork are for a global recovery on special bike, here in Spain in 90s was know how "Grisley" designed by Peter Grisley for "BH BIKES".
Stay tun ed when i finish that beatiful 😀
Ánimo llévala hasta nuestros,días, haz que sea una máquina para volar raso amigo tu puedes!
Love this build. I am looking to build something similar. Haven't found the right bike yet to start, do you have any tips on what I should look for?
para mi usted es el mejor restaurador todas las deja muy bonitas
Nice 👍🏼
Man that Stumpy looks awesome. Too bad the frame was shattered.
How gradation of sandpaper you use to matting the frame paint ?
Great looking build . It looks like it rides well . I noticed you stayed with the original brake system instead of upgrading to disc brakes .
the best👍
Do you find you get less chain slap with the 1x10 setup as opposed to 3x8 setup?
Instant like as always.
I’ve really been enjoying your channel, and have been inspired, just picked up an old Fisher Aquila to restore. I’m wondering about your letter cutter from Joann’s, what brand/model did you go with? Any tips? Could use a tutorial actually. Thanks!
Now that paint job the way it was done is mega kool.i do a good bit of mtb parts myself but im still tryna grasp how all your sticker layering and painting works so i can try this myself. But i think i need buy a stickers machine 🕺🕺
Beautiful, que pensez vous de la cassette bonaly ?? Est ce de bonne qualité ??
Hartail party 🤘
I love your videos! Do you use a special plotter film for the decals or is it just „normal“ vinyl film?
Proud of my 1999 scott atacama
