THE BELT OF VENUS - Painting the Moon at Dawn / Tonal - Colourist Impressionism

- The Belt of Venus (also called Venus's Girdle, the antitwilight arch, or antitwilight) is an atmospheric phenomenon visible shortly before sunrise or after sunset, during civil twilight. It is a band of magenta - ranging through to ochres and greens - that surrounds the observer in a wondrous glow, extending roughly 20 - 30° above the horizon.
Today I'm painting on a large canvas (92x122cm or 36x48 inches) completed in the studio. The subject is from one of my little Plein Air studies, created on a recent and memorable painting trip. My choice of medium is oil paint, applied with palette knives.

Gidday mate, my love of astronomy connects me with this one. Love that hazy Moon softly glowing through the Belt of Venus. A beautiful, atmospheric time of day to capture and to enjoy. The road takes you there, it draws me down and into the scene. Another great tutorial on perspective , highlights and leading lines. A restful, peaceful paint and a delight to watch. Cheers, Rich

Hi Richard, That is just stunningly beautiful. You would be very good with the the Auroras or polar lights as well which are similar to the venus lights but different colours and also moving . You captured the effect of the Venus phenomenon so well, and that would not be easy. I liked the soft effect of the sky that you achieved, so life like. Really like this painting, well done. Bill
