- Den Kongelige Livgardes Musikkorps and Tambourkorps, The Band of the Royal Life Guards and Corps of Drums supporting the ceremony of Changing the Guard in Copenhagen on Sunday 8th January 2023.
The ceremony takes place with full musical support daily (other than on Fridays) between December and April when Her Majesty Queen of Denmark resides in Amalienborg Palace no matter what the weather is, however the palace concert might not take place if there is heavy rain like it was on this day.
Please see below the timestamps for highlights from the ceremony:
00:00 The parade leaves Gothersgade 100 Barracks in front of Rosenborg Castle and marches through Copenhagen City Centre
10:40 Dansk Parade Marsch entering Amalienborg Palace
11:12 The Advance Forward (with a very good trombone counter melody)
11:38 Marching the Colour onto parade
12:58 The Changing of the Guard
13:39 Marching the colour back off parade
14:43 The Return march through Copenhagen City to Gothersgae 100 Barracks
The band was under the direction of their Musical Director Michael Aaberg Thomsen and during the parade they played from musical booklet M which included the British march Eagle Squadron by Alford! (06:29)
To find out more about the band please follow them on social media and also listen to their excellent recordings of military music on both Spotify and Apple Music :

It has been a pleasure visiting Copenhagen documenting the work of the Royal Danish Life Guards. There will be two further videos of other changing of the guard ceremonies from this trip to be published in due course and many photographs on our Instagram Page. Thank you to the band for their hospitality during my visit!
Interesting, unique points to note:
The Bass Drummer holding music for the cymbal player to follow whilst on the march
The head dress is called a bearskin and is actually flat on top and built around a silver helmet, hence the peak and this is where the head dress evolved from
The band uses no Saxophones and instead two Bb Baritone Horns carrying the tenor lines
The Tuba's played are Concert F and C tubas with one placed behind the percussion to provide the melody lines with a pulse and bass line.
Both Flute and Piccolo is played on the march
The Band of the Royal Life Guards are the only professional Danish Wind Orchestra and are the official musicians of the Royal Danish Household.

This is an absolutely terrific video of one of the Greatest Military Bands of the World! Thank you very much for sharing this excellent recording!
Thank you for the comment! It’s been a delight filming them and getting to watch them live even if it did rain heavily for the 3 days during the parade!
Great video Joe. A pleasure showing you our museum yesterday. We actually have three more military bands. One more in the Army called "Slesvigske Musikkorps" and one in the Air Force called "Prinsens Musikkorps". Both of these are like the band of the Royal Life Guards professional musicians. The Navy has "Søværnets Tambourkorps" which consists of regular soldiers.
Thank you very much, it was wonderful to have a look around!
Our three other military bands have pure brassinstrumentation and percussion - so-called 'field bands'. It is a tradition that dates back to around 1850. Not to be confused with the British style brassbands. The instrumentation and style of playing is completely different. Two of them consist of professional permanent employed musicians. The musicians in the Navy Band are in fact not regular soldiers. They are professional musicians, but employed on a contract - i.e. not permanent employees.
@@mgaws wrong. there are several amateur players in the navy band, some of them are from the academy but still. there are people from the amateur bands that are employed there.
"Søværnets Tambourkorps" is by far the most entertaining tho.
Marvellous video.
Great video, thanks !
Great video, thanks for all the additional info, very interesting.
A great video. I love this videos. It is interesting and fascinating to see this. I have seen a lot of videos from changing the guards at Buckingham Palace and Troping the colour. Greetings from Diö in Sweden.
Porque me gustan éstos Desfiles
Será rememoranza de mi caja de Soldaditos de Plomo Qué aunque un día Cerré para siempre Aún conservo en mi memoria
I enjoyed that video.Good band. Like to see the band perform at our REMT with our pipe bands.
Den Kongelige Livgardes Musikkorps performs 'De Danske Våbenbrødres March' composed by Johan Ole Emil Horneman at 20:10.
Great video. Always fascinated by Den Kongelige Livgardes but information on them is hard to come by online (in English anyway).
Thank you, it has been an interesting weekend spent with them, learning about their heritages and traditions to hopefully make them more accessible in English through my page and spread awareness of what they do!
🚎Transfer to Copenhagen✈
What is the march at 1:30 called?
Nice !! Great from Rotterdam the Netherlans !
nice to hear a song from oliver.😊
“ Consider Yourself” lucky that you did 😉
i,ll be back soon.
just going to pick a pocket or two.
Does anyone have any clue what the march right at the start is called? Played as they are leaving the barracks' gate?
The Thunder’s Tail.
Sadly I have been unsuccessful in finding any other recordings of this march but was reliably informed by the band that this was the march they played at my time of visit.
@@MilitaryBandsEverywhere Hm, I can't find anything either on that one. Too bad :(
2:10 why the officer saluted to left side?
The person in orange in civilian clothes was standing at attention saluting the parade, the officer returns it with a salute. Usually it is current or no longer serving members of the regiment of any rank.
@@andreasjorgensen8597 Thank you for your answer and kindness :)
The Drum Major and officers are very observant for civilians 'greeting' the parade (standing at attention and with a slight bow). They will usually get a salute from the parade.
@@mgaws And few things warms the heart more of an old guardsman than to receive a salute in return. JAN77
once i was in uniform when the pade passed. We had been instucted to front the parade and salute. I did, and the officer leading the guard detail lowered his sabre. I was so proud!!
