I just got back from his shop in Illinois. Drove 13 1/2 hours from NY to have Ahmed and his team do 30,000 Mile service including the transmission.

The shop told my buddy that the trans on his 06 Matrix was shot. The car has over 300,000 miles. I dropped the pan and both solenoids were gummed up from dirt. Cleaned them up, fresh fluid, and I swapped out the rusty lines and the car has been going strong for a year now. His commute if 40 miles a day, god knows how many miles it has now. The OD stopped working at 299,999.
I have a 2000 tundra with 365,000 miles I never changed the transmission fluid in 25 years. I've slowly added maybe a cup or two every couple years lol. The fluid is red and seems fine.

The owners that previously owned this vehicle really got the moneys worth but I feel bad for the sucker that bought this vehicle last. You inherited all the neglect from the first day this vehicle rolled off the showroom/assembly line.
Lesson learned is maintain your vehicle it will pay dividends for decades.
I am in California and work on cars and used to rust free cars. I can't imagine being a mechanic who has to work on rusted cars like this one in the rust belt areas of the US.
I love your channel you are an outstanding mechanic. If I lived close to your shop you would be my mechanic. I own a 2018 Lexus 570 and a 2024 Toyota Tacoma. I live in southern Illinois after watching your videos which are excellent. Don’t people up in the Chicago area realize what those winters do to a car over the years. If I lived in the Chicago area I would undercoat any new car I purchased.
All you need is a little map gas sometimes a big hammer, air tool, or leverage. Metal lines on trans coolers rotting out is very common here and many a car has gone down because of it.

@@riceburner4747 I also use anti seize all brake parts, especially where rotors meet the hubs, all suspension parts matter of fact anything that I feel will be appreciated by any future mechanic who works on any of my cars.

At about 12 minutes in, I had seen enough, too much deferred maintenance. Don't throw good money at that truck, too much rust. I feel bad for anybody living in an area that causes vehicles to rust like that. Great video, just be careful under that truck.

With those evidently rusted loose rear shocks that already high center of gravity 4Runner could easily roll over like a happy cat in a high crosswind or swerve.

Worst decision removing a dipstick from automatic transmissions. I would not buy a car 🚗 without a dipstick in the transmission. 🇦🇺🦘

Aftermarket parts and fluids quality are questionable.
Well... that depends. The OEM axles have been discontinued by toyota.
I think the same applies to the four piston calipers for the brakes. The dealer in my area buys the calipers from NAPA because of the lifetime guarantee.
The Xreas shocks are far too expensive. The best alternative is Bilstien 5100's.
Brake rotors-- Brembo. Brake pads-- Hawk LTS.
My point: Aftermarket is often the only and best alternative.
Dealers took the transmission dipstick away, so how can you check the transmission fluid without taking it to a shop? The transmission dipstick should never have been eliminated.
Manufacturer eliminated dipstick, not dealership.
Jack stands and a hundred dollar scan tool, but I 100% agree on the stick never being removed.

It’s a sealed system, pretty much. No dipstick reduces the risk of adding the wrong oil or wrong amount.
the 2006 looks alot like the 2004 Tundra SR5, unfortunately people do NOT change the tran fluid. it should be done like every 40ish Thousand miles, just drain it.. and refill no flushing or anything funny that might cause more damage than good. Just drain and refill it recharges the trany fluid.
I’m so glad when I got my 2014 Tacoma I’ve been putting Fluid Film all over the frame, crossmembers, under the fenders, bolts, etc. My truck looks brand new underneath.
I haven't done anything to protect the underside of my 2004, but it looks new because I powerwash the underside once in a while. Also, the area where I live (Colorado) doesn't salt the roads in winter.

Wow the owner really let this one go without dealing with anything.. or never had it looked at for years. Poor truck could have had a much better life and been a lot more enjoyable to drive !

Your average salt/ rust belt car lasts 10-12 years. Yes you can mitigate the issue with Fluid Film or similar (one time sealers don't work), but few do. The point being this car has lasted longer than most (perhaps it was moved out of the rust belt at some point, but the damage has been done) but replacing calipers and brake lines when the frame is turning to powder doesn't make sense, so they drive them until they break.

These new toyotas are becoming a lot more delicate got and old rav4 ran rhe transmission very low on fluid went thru bottles of Lucas non slip and i even changed the fluid and filter and 200k miles when it had never been changed and it shiftd even smoother than before
I think the newer the get, the more like a swiss watch they get where they need more precision to run correctly and neglecting small things messes things up badly. Too bad engines and such aren't exactly as simple as they used to be.

Yikes! Two sure ways to kill a Yotas are 1) accident and 2) rust. When I lived in Maine, rust usually killed cars within 7-9 years. I’d get rid of this thing asap.

I sense your hesitation on going any further with this vehicle. I don't blame you! FWIW, and IMHO, I would walk away and recommend that the owner salvage title that vehicle and sell it as a parts vehicle. I firmly believe he'll be money ahead. Even if that tranny holds, I just can't see how he'll ever be able to drive it ling enough for the cost benefit before that metal Cancer finishes it off. Personally I would NEVER sell that vehicle as a driver even with everything fixed. It's too far gone. Salvage for parts. Just my honest opinion.
If people just did a little bit of preventative maintenance these issues would be greatly decreased.
I wish that gentleman best of luck. I believe you AND he are going the correct route. With 90,000 miles, if tranny seems all right, I'd TAKE a chance & fix shocks then axles. Only 90,000 is worth the risk. After repairing everything, he ought to get an undercoating job done. It will prolong lines & frame. Looks in great shape! And STILL better than car payments/price of a new one. 👍
To late for undercoating. The best thing now is just use fluid film on it each year.

I’ve had a Nissan oil pan rust a hole in it 😮 and subframes break from rust 😢 In winter vehicles are white with salt more than snow 😂

That old fluid looked pretty good for being as old as it was. It's gonna be interesting to see if the tranny survived being 4 quarts low!
Don't know about USA, but in England and presumably Europe there's no specific oil change interval on the 5 speed auto transmission, at specific intervals the workshop is supposed to inspect the oil, presumably by taking a sample from the level plug...by the way it still annoys me having to mess about underneath to check the level instead of a dipstick.
The same box is found in Prado from 2004, most of us sensible owners give that ''no need to change the oil unless'' instruction a good ignoring, gearbox failure among those of us on the Landcruiser forums is unheard of.
My Prado is 19 years old now and despite being in England where salt is used extensively in winter the vehicle is still rock solid, but i do treat the undersides with ACF50 spray and keep the chassis coated in marine grease.

To be honest, whilst I feel a little bad for the owner. It does seem like he could've given it a bit more TLC than he did.
Ripped boots, bluetooth shocks, that leak of the trans should've left puddles where he parked. I've been in this situation too, but atleast I can tell myself It wasn't for lack of trying.
Here though... why wait so long with everything. It feels a bit neglected...

BTW, if you want to prevent your 4Runner from rusting this is what I know works.
Inside frame rails, doors etc (anywhere enclosed) use PB Blaster "Surface Shield".
Everything underbody (exterior of frame, axles, floor etc.) use Cosmoline (RP-342) from "Cosmoline Direct".
Man that shop tour has such goodlighting. Wish there were plenty of shops like this
You certainly gave this a valiant effort. I truly hope that this transmission has been saved, but for how long? My concern is regarding that "sealed" transmission. Checking the fluid level seems to be at least an effort if not a pain. Is there no warning light or Code generated to indicate that the trans is a quart or more low? I have a 2006 Avalon (I know, the "worst" year to have) it has a dipstick. I check it, I check the oil, the power steering, the brake fluid and the coolant, weekly. Maybe I am paranoid about it but that's how I found my power steering line leak before it became a problem. I am disgusted that Toyota joined the ranks of other insincere car manufacturers, who don't care about customers or quality, to make a system that can fail catastrophically without a hint of the trouble until it may be too late. Almost 5 qts low!! No excuse Toyota.

For those in the rust belt, try using fluid film spray on the frame. Also, do your maintenance guys! This Toyota would have been totally fine if the owner sprayed down the frame with fluid film every fall and did the correct maintenance.

I have a 4 Runner the same year as that one, 216000 trouble free miles I live in the south so no rust. I change my transmission fluid every 30,000 I know you can go longer but transmission fluid is cheap a new transmission is not. Glad it worked out for the owner these trucks will last forever properly maintained and no rust.
I started watching the channel during the pandemic. It doesn’t surprise me a bit how far it has grown. It’s hard to find honest mechanics and a shop that helps customers save money. You’re a dream owner for a mechanic. I hate turning wrenches for someone that has no clue what you’re doing but evaluate you by your numbers. Some people with trucks with this transmission replaced that terrible allen head level check bolt with another 14mm drain bolt before it's too late.

The rust on the cars where you live, WOW!
It’s really smart to oil spray your car every year or two with a wet spray rust proofing product. I’m in Canada and there are several professionally applied options. I do it on our cars are there’s barely any rust underneath after many years.
Yup. I have 2 work trucks. Rustproofing at least once a year and a good rinse under the truck in late spring. I have very few small spots of surface rust on my used, work trucks so can't complain at all.

There was a repair shop in my area where I grew up that did undercoating for a reasonable price. In fact, the shop's reputation was such that many a new vehicle owner would have this done immediately after driving the vehicle off the dealership lot. The undercoating substance was essentially the leftovers from the bottoms of crude oil barrels, a tar-like substance. My parents had a Ford Fairmont for over twenty years; there was hardly any rust to be found anywhere in the undercarriage ever.

We have a friend in Salem, Missouri who has a 2006 4Runner. He is not in the rust belt. His has 332,000 miles on it. He changes the oil regularly but has never done anything with the transmission and it's still running fine.
I just did a drain and fill of the ATF on our 2009 RAV4 which as just over 100,000 miles on it. However, the transmission only has 36,000 miles on it because the original tranny was replaced by the Toyota dealer due to a defect. The cost of replacement was paid in full by an aftermarket warranty.
Spray your frame with Fluid Film once a year to avoid all that corrosion.

I just discovered the lines going to my Land Cruiser's radiator are weeping at the connection. No idea how long it's been going on so I have to find your other video and get a refresher on servicing the sealed transmission.

Thank you so much for your video. This is extremely relevant for me right now as I just replaced all these lines, as well as the inlet and out trans cooler lines coming out of the transmission on 06 V8 4runner. I'm somewhat a beginner DIYer as it's my first time doing many of these jobs.. but watching your videos like this for certain really makes me feel like I'm learning a whole lot and its starting to pay off.
Much described in the video of what this 4runner needed is what I have taken upon myself to do on mine - CV Axles, Wheel bearing, seized front caliper, and trans line leaks. Almost identical. It's just that in this video, unfortunately his car has far worse damage regarding the rust. I pray for him that his transmission comes to back to operating order. I love my 4runner, and as a matter fact I have two of them, both 06s. My V8 has 183k, while other one is a v6 with 337k miles now and runs flawlessly. Maintenance really is key, and I can't wait to complete my v8 as a full on learning project and overland build. I just worried about the potential loss of ATF, but she feels really healthy otherwise and I feel a lot better about it with research regarding the topic. I'm happy to see such supporting content and look forward for updates this truck and it's transmission. I pray for the owner that he can keep his baby. If all works out, maybe he can look to upgrading his suspension instead of going stock - a worthwhile fun, upgrade and investment while he'll need to do it.

99k on an 06 4Runner and it’s this bad, If the tranny is shot I would get a used one and go ahead and repair all that is needed. Believe it or not this 4 runner can go another 200K easy with all the repairs needed. Just like the owner of the 80 series Land Cruiser taking care of what is needed. Once all repairs are done simple maintenance to keep it going. Oh and if you live in the rust belt wash your under carriage often to keep the rust away as long as possible!

I’m amazed at your demeanor when you are working even when your job doesn’t go the way you planned you’re calm and don’t appear to be flustered.
Another interesting video, I don’t think this customer has a chance, I think the transmission is holding on but if they want to get more mileage then they should wave goodbye to the transmission and get it rebuilt or buy a new one. It’s probably going to cost less money to buy another used car but as you said you don’t want a comeback and the car is at an inflection point where it’s not worth fixing the right way because the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.
Hope you make a video on converting the X-REAS system to new shocks. Interested in brand you use to replace the old system. Thank you for the videos, your work ethic, thoroughness along with your experience help me to keep my Toyota mechanically sound at all times!

AMD, that sad Forerunner looks about as bad underneath as most of the stuff in my home state of Rhode Island. I have had to dispose of many vehicles here. I think there is more life there, but a shame at 100,000 miles. I hope your trans service goes well for you. It is amazing that as busy as you are, you still give 100% to each customer! i can’t help but remember my 99 tacoma how badly it rusted and i had to let it go in 2023. dealer serviced since i got it in 2008, it wasn’t rusted back then. Over the years, i spent $15k CAD on repairs, mostly the last 5 years of ownership. They NEVER mentioned to me anything about the rust and rot. they just happily took my money.
That sucks. Unfortunately its hard to find somebody truly trustworthy, unless they were simply ignorant about the issues. But that still means they aren't trustworthy if they don't research the cars they're selling to customers.
That's why i think its important for somebody to personally search up a car they're considering buying, research specific engine transmission and year's issues. A way to find detailed info is by including the word "forum" in the search, since you'll find results from forums where all the experts are.
i don't think you are the only one in that boat 8^{ of the monkeys working under your vehicle not informing you or even caring about it ... i sorta 'lucked out' by seeing the Yota trucks of the 1980s + the early/mid-90s with the most serious of body rott in the rear tailgate, lower doors and wheel house fender openings... when it came my time to become a Gen1 originator i routinely hosed the road slop + salt off and out of all those areas as best as i could when the temps were right around freezing so the doors wouldn't totally freeze shut the next morning! I also had the dealer spray it underneath before taking delievery with that rubbery undercoating to winter protect it... but i had no idea what was going on behind that undercoating until it fell off 20+ years later... LOTs of surface rust lay behind it i had not ever seen before. put in some good long hours repairing that precious frame coating with something i think is MUCH more durable and lasting to road salt spray

Why would Toyota even introduce this metal pipe assembly if it just runs a short distance and has rubber hoses on each end?

I checked in the internet about the reax schock system and is to improve cornering handling but they acknowledge that is very expensive to replace and recommend to be removed 🙏🏽

I'm going to change the transmission fluid in my 2020 RAV4 before summer. I have the video you recorded for the fluid change. My XTOOL D8BT is the go to Diag tool, thank you for that recommendation, and I remember watching that trans fluid temp reading I saw in the tool's readout. I'm keeping this video as a backup to the other one. Would have changed it last year but thanks to jury duty and other things that came along, this will be the 5th ownership year, and the fluid change.

Happened to my mothers FJ cruiser, all the fluid leaked out and I had to go pick her up as it stopped moving. It was these cooler lines and I filled it up with the correct procedure and ws fluid, been fine for over 2 months now.
Moments like this I thank God I live down south away from where they salt the roads. The underside of my 9 year old Tacoma doesn’t have an inch of rust.
Also, I can’t speak directly to the 4Runner but on my V6 Tacoma with the towing package, I flushed better than 12 quarts through the system. So, yes, it has a surprisingly large capacity.
I’m so glad I live in SoCal. 2007 Tacoma w/168k miles, very very little rust. Front and Backs Shocks replaced with Bilstein 5100’s at 140k.
Never been left on the road.
Midwest rust just amazes me! I feel sorry for the mechanics that have to deal with it every day!

That front fluid line on my '08 blew also. Still struggling to get it running right. This video is very helpful, but I just wish it came out a year ago! Also waiting until I'm confident in transmission before making other bigger repairs (suspension and exhaust). 207k miles.
I know this comment has nothing to do with this video but I can't find another way to request a topic. I bought a 2017 Land Cruiser in January. It was very damp inside, thought it was due to detailers. Found the fresh air intake broken. This is evedently a common issue. The dealer did all service on this prior. There is a fix, a guy makes and sells on etsy, has a CZcams video. Thought it might be a good topic because I had a hard time finding info on this. Thanks for your good work. I've been a Mechanic for 35 years and am sad about the state of the industry.
Somebody told me if i want to fix cars, do it as a hobby, not a career. So its probably not good to work in the car mechanic industy from what i hear. If people arent getting paid a fair wage for fixing cars, why do we deserve them doing that job?
