Is Ball Striking or Course Management More Important for Scoring?

  • The conclusion is.. on a good day, you can score well without hitting well (good course management + bad ball striking) but, if you hit good shots to the wrong places.. the score will not take care of itself (bad course management + good ball striking). Agree or disagree? 😉

    18:38 this is such a good point and something that's super easy to overlook imho. you could probably do an entire video on using pin positions to work backwards from the green and i bet you people would love it. i mean, i know i would 😁😁😁
    also, i just want to say i'm super thankful for these vlogs. it just dawned on me that in a normal world you probably wouldn't be making this content, or at least this much content with the same frequency. i'm going to miss these kinds of videos when you get back on the tournament circuit, but at that point it will be really exciting to follow you around the golf course with someone else behind the camera. you are the first lady pro besides annika or wie that i've really been looking forward to watching on TV, and it's all because of these fun and insightful vlogs you keep sharing. i genuinely admire your dedication and work ethic, and despite your alleged a-type personality (😉) i'm amazed at how positive you are on the golf course. it's really inspiring!
    anyway, to answer your question, imho good ball-striking is nice for the ego but good course management is better for the scorecard. e.g. last time i went out it was to a new course (for me) and i had no idea where the pins were. i hit a lot of great shots (#humblebrag) but found myself with really bad angles into the green on numerous occasions. that i only brought 6i, 7i and putter made this even more challenging to get it close. 😂
    p.s. the color-coordinated shot tracer is an awesome touch -- love it!! 👌👌👌

    I think you are right when it comes to full shots. The full follow through shows a full commitment to the shot. When I have hit a few bad shots then I unconsciously try and steer the ball, not trusting to the swing. Then, when I realise what I have started to do, I re-commit to the full swing without fear of the consequences. See, feel and commit. Course management is the one thing I have really learned from your rounds. Cheers!

    Course management and ball striking go hand in hand and you shown that as you gave yourself opportunities... what i see is that you are able to direct where you want to hit your ball - reflection of great ball striker...now if a few drives go awry does not take away from the whole round... Managing the course requires you to hit into space, areas that require precision and you are doing this....Golf is about performing less about conscious thoughts -as you play:perform you are on autopilot a practice swing is a rehearsal why should there be a thought? My point is you are highly skilled... you know your miss, the cause n effect and hopefully how to adjust if need be...I liked in other videos that you went with your instincts, intuition - expand that develop that - instead of thought..someone with your skill level does not need to think what to do other than just react..that is my impression....cheers

    Ball striking and course management work together. To say one is more important than the other is just simplification. It's the same as the mental vs physical, it's 100% of both.

  • @rtfcomputing4614
    @rtfcomputing4614 Před 3 lety

    For me, ball striking is more important. If I am striking well, that generally means my alignment/aim are better. Good ball striking means the shot is more likely to be on the intended line though it can go short/long of the landing zone. However, good ball striking generally means that there is less course management needed. If I am striking well and need 155y, out comes the 8i - no questions, no overthinking, etc. Go for the intended target and there will be less to manage if you strike it clean. With regards to holding the follow through, it is generally a sign of swinging Through The Ball instead of swinging At The Ball. Getting to the point where you can hold the finish means you hit nearly every check point in the swing.

  • @TheMentalcaddie
    @TheMentalcaddie Před 3 lety

    Course management is the key. If you don't break scoring rules, like being short sided or losing shots of the tee, then you will still score well. You don't have to hit it perfect to score if you manage the course well.

  • @fretless05
    @fretless05 Před 3 lety

    From my experience, there are only two things you can really think about and change in your swing: where you start and where you finish. The dynamic portion of the swing in between those two points are all about practice. Thinking about the focuses your mind in maintaining good balance through the stroke.
    In terms of what's more important, I think it depends on where your game is. As a mid-teens handicap golfer, I know my ball striking is not the best. So, I think course management for me is more important, as I need to avoid mistakes in club choice or aim that leave in places I can't recover from easily. maybe as I improve and can hit more shots from any given spot on the course, management will be less important.

    Once again, another fun video Gen! My two cents are: Course management is an extremely important part of golf, however it is next level. Once you can sail the ship (good ball striking) you can now focus on plotting the smartest course (good course management). I just love planning out my shot like a boss and then entertaining everybody by topping the ball 20 yards or almost smoking the beer-cart. 😂😂😂

  • @pandersonnike
    @pandersonnike Před 3 lety

    I think it depends on ball striking. If you are drop kicking and topping the ball for only like 30-40 yards, then course management wouldn't matter since it's taking you 5 shots just to be near the green. Trust me, I've been there a lot. When I do hit the ball somewhat well and get it going for some distance, then I play course management. Otherwise I can think logically, as in lets lay it up in front of a pond then hit it onto the green. But your striking sucks so much you lay it up easily, then strike it in the water. Twice. I get why Gen and Sidekick say management first, but both consistently get the ball moving. Even on a bad day. For many players who slice it out of bounds, or top it for 30 yards, or hook it into a creek, it doesn't matter since you are losing strokes by gaining minimal distance.
