- Hey everyone, i just wanted to share this video with you in case you happen to run into the same issue with your 2011 Ford F-150. My door latches broke during the ice storm in February 2021. I contacted my dealer to replace them and they quoted $656.00. I decided to tear into it myself and was pleasantly surprised at what i found.

I can't believe I actually did it! As a woman, I have never had to do anything like this. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was awsome!
Thanks! Glad it worked out for you!
My elderly neighbor has a 2010 F150 with the same problem. He's selling it soon and wanted to repair the rear door. The upper cable works but the bottom latch is stuck closed. Earlier F150 models have a different mechanism. You're the only video that works on this type of mechanism. After watching the video several times I got so I could do it blind-folded. My neighbor often complains about mechanic prices, which keep going up, so a BIG thanks to WRO and other shade tree mechanics for posting these HOW TO videos and saving us some big cash, especially during these times, and it's satisfying to resolve these pesky problems at home. Thanks very much WRO.
Awesome! Glad it helped out thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video just had the same thing on a 2010. Extremely cold yesterday warm today. I can confirm you can do this repair just taking out the 10mm bolts and working the latch piece out. Once free you can pull the cable to open the door Then re seat the cable and button it back up. No need to remove all the door panel. Thanks though great video
Life and Budget saver! This was EXACTLY, almost word for word, what happened to me. A blizzard hit with sub-zero temps, which "froze" my door, then I still couldn't open it. Was ready to replace the pullies with bike breaks. But as I started, my door didn't look the same (theirs were 91-08 models, mine is 2009). Your video saved me $656! Thank you
Glad it helped out!
I took door apart and yes the ball came out of slot. but could not for the life of me to get it back in.
For anyone with this problem, just remove 3 lock washers holding trim to door handle . Now it's easy to see slot and bingo fixed. Thanks for your video. Dealer wanted $400. to fix.
THANK YOU for this tutorial. This helped me fix my door. I didn’t take it all apart. Just removed the two 10mm handle bolts and popped the handle off the door panel still in place. There’s enough play for a pair of long nose pliers to get behind there and reinsert the cable.
Nice!
This just happened to my truck. I love the internet! Thanks!
I kinda slammed my door shut and this cable popped out for me, thanks for this video, just fixed my door.
Awesome!
Was able to just pop out two small circles and screws and door handle two screw and pop the top covers and get to wire. Did not need to take door panel off. Not as easy I guess but with needles nose I could do it. Thanks for great video!
had the same issue, didn't have to take it apart to that extent, but was still able to get the ball head back into place, now I have to be a little more gentle opening it
Great Video. Saved a lot of time and money. My back door would not open. You have to get a small extension for the 6mm screw on the bottom, but you can get the bottom screw while the back door is closed. I think that maybe the cable stretches over time which can make it come out of the small harness. I may regret it, but I put a small zip tie around both cables to take a little of the play out of them before I put everything back together. Your video is great! Thanks again.
Great video! My door wouldn’t open and followed your demonstration and finally got the door to open and found the end of the cable was disconnected. I simply reattached and i once again have a functioning door. Thanks!
Awesome glad it worked out!
You saved my life 😆😆😆. Not actually but I was getting so frustrated not being able to open my rear door !!!!! After watching your video and seeing how it all worked I was able to get the door open , fix it and lube the cables in ten minutes!!! I know an elderly man with the same truck as me that hasn’t been able to open his rear door in 3 years !!! I’m gonna fix it for him!!!!!!! 👍
Awesome glad it worked out!
I only had to remove plastic panel and 2 ten-millimeter bolts where latch is
Then, reach in with the needle nose pliers and reconnect the cable back into the slot.
So, glad I saw your video. A 15-minute job.
I believe the latch was frozen and the tension being applied by the cable on the 'upper cable holder' was sufficient to cause the cable to dislodge from the holder.
Thanks Much !!
Thanks for this info. It got my door straightened out. I do have to say though, I was able to start with taking the door handle off and was able to get the cable back in place without taking any of the panels off.
Awesome! Glad it worked out!
I’ve had to do this 3 times and doing it again tomorrow…gotta love PA winters
Thank you for all the insight I've been hesitant to get the door repaired for at least 9 months and it literally took me 15 minutes
Awesome!
Excellent video. I just finished fixing my right rear door in about 20 minutes. My wife was pushing to get to an appointment so the pressure was on but we made the appointment. Thanks for keeping me out of the doghouse.
Lol glad to help!
Thank you sir! Managed to get it all undone with the door still stuck shut, same problem except the bottom cable was loose. Here's hoping it doesn't come out again!
Thank you so much for making that video, we had just gone through an ice storm here in Pennsylvania, and my wife’s pick up door stopped opening. I was out of options when I found your video and in about 15 minutes I had it fixed. I can’t tell you, bro how much I appreciate it.
Glad it helped out thanks for watching!
I do appreciate your video, it just so happened that I followed your advice and low and behold it was exactly the same problem you showed in your video!! Thank you so much, saved me some money as well as frustration in fixing the problem! 😊
Awesome! Glad it helped!
You saved my butt. I thought it was the latches and when I git in there, I had the ball out of place. You rock!
thanks for the video, I just took the 2 screws at handle and managed to pull my handle out enough to fix it
Awesome!
Me too thanks for this tip!!
2011 F150; I too had bought the grommet keepers as needed in older models. You are INCREDIBLE, and I thank you. 1.25 hours, including tool collection. One issue that took a while was taking that bottom screw out while the door is closed.
I found that once I took trim off and unscrewed the door latch I was able to pull the wire that came adrift and was able to open door and get at the bottom screw 🤓
@@davemanarey761thanks for answering this! I have the exact problem and was wondering how I was going to get that last bolt.
Thanks for the help! Frozen door and came disconnected.
Was the bottom latch on my truck.
Took 1-1/2 hours.
Couldn’t open the door to work on it.
Had to work from the inside out.
Holding both cables with a zip tie.
We’ll see if that helps.
Thanks again!
Outstanding!!!!! Thanks, just fixed my passenger side. There is just enough room to get at it if you remove just the handle.
Awesome!
Legend! did this, took about 30 mins to work it out but I fixed it!
Awesome!
Thanks for posting this video. Could not find this style of rear door on CZcams and my problem was exact same. End of metal cable has fallen out cause only top cable to be pulled. Easy fix!
Thanks for the video. Just did mine without taking everything else off. Just un bolted the latch and fished back cable with needle nose pliers.
Awesome, glad it worked out!
I would like to thank you as well for the video. Had the same cable let loose on me yesterday and I got it fixed in no time thanks to your detailed instructions.
Awesome!
Many thanks. This was also the problem with my 2012 F150. The problem occurred the morning after a car wash on a cold night, similar to when others encountered the issue.
Great video. Helped me immensely. One thing though. If the top latch won’t release you still have open it by pulling the cable for it first. I had to get the latch handle out first. Took a bit but was finally successful. Thanks again and a big thumbs up!
Glad it helped
Just followed this video with phone on seat and worked out perfectly! Thanks for this! 12 minute job
Great glade it helped you out!
Same issue, ice storm. Same fix, Thank you very much!
Thanks for a great video. My door works great 👍. The job took me awhile because of my on stupid mistakes. Was almost finished putting it back together and realized I didn’t have my needle nose pliers. After taking the door apart again, found the pliers in my hip pocket. Nothing is easy when I am involved.
Thanks again 👍
Lol, glad you got it taken care of.
I wanted to say that you can access the cables simply by removing the two 10mm bolts. You don't have to remove the panels to access the cables. Thanks for the inspirational video though. I would NOT have attempted the fix without first watching your video.
Thanks! Yeah that makes it even easier
2012 is having this problem rn came across your video gonna try it thank you for the help!
Awesome! Hope you get it fixed
Your the Man. I appreciate the dismantle info. Really saves alot of time. Done in less than 15mins..Thanks
Awesome! Glad it helped out!
Thanks for the video. Piece of cake. Works the same on 2014 for the bottom latch.
Awesome!
100% on the money! Exactly as described and caused by an ice storm as well.
thanks man, had a door that wouldn't open and it turned out to be just what you showed us here. went in thinking it was something else
Awesome! Glad it worked out!
Video was perfect. Thank you very much. My drivers rear door failed over the winter. I wanted to wait until spring so it would be warmer to work on it. My passenger side did the same thing. Just fixed them both in an hour.
Both were exactly like your video.
Awesome glad it worked out!
A true American hero. Thank you sir!
Funny the exact same problem here and it was the day we had the truk covered in ice, hopefully mines as simple to fix as yours. Awesome vid thank you sir
Thanks hopefully it’s is that simple.
@@WilliamsonRidge actually fixed mine the other night and it was exactly what you showed in the video, thank you very much!!
@@jc-kj2on awesome! Glad it worked out.
Thanks for the video! It helped me fix my driver side rear door the bottom latch wouldn’t release I also was able to remove the handle only easy fix about 10 mins
Pretty much the same deal. Cable ball for lower door latch popped out. I also bought the $10.00 fix collars, I will hang them on the wall. lol Subbed.
Awesome, thanks!
This was my exact problem! Thank you so much for making this video! Saved me lots of time and money!
Awesome glad it helped out
Video was very helpful you probably saved me $500
Glad it helped
Hey man ! Thank you so much ! I just fixed MY door thanks to you ,have a Blessed day
Awesome! Glad it worked out for you!
Thanks for the video. I need to fix my door.
Thank you so much! I’d been putting off getting this fixed. A free fix is something I’m happy to do!
Glad it helped out
Excellent video and explanation. Very helpful. Thank you
This video was a lifesaver!
Glad it helped out!
Thank you for making this video. You saved me a lot of money.
Glad to help out
Thanks so much for this video. I also couldn't find this door setup anywhere! My door is fixed!
Awesome!
Thanks for the tips. This video really helped me on my 2011 f150. It was the other cable but worked all the same.
Awesome!
Exactly what happened to my 2012 Raptor! Easy fix. Thanks for the great information. Chuck
Glad it helped you out! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much. Very helpful. My bottom cable popped out of latch. Back together.
Awesome!
At 7:45 those 3 little metal push-on nuts over the plastic stubs in the middle of the handle. I nicely worked them off, Then the entire other side was exposed and you can see exactly where the steel nubs on the end of the cables hook into.
Going to try it this weekend. I just have to figure out how to get my door open.
You can take enough of the panel loose from the inside of the truck to get something into the cables to pull the latch
Thank you so very much
Using this in march 2024
Glad it helped out
Thank you for this. This was the exact issue on my 2012 raptor.
Awesome truck! Glad it helped out!
Muy apreciada mi amigo! I was hoping not to have to spend hundreds to fix both of my rear doors, so this is super helpful.
Awesome glad it helped out!
@@WilliamsonRidge 20 mins on the first door, 10 mins on the second. Cost: $0. Don’t forget to lube the lock mechanism at the bottom of the door! Can’t thank you enough!
excellent video. Thanks for sharing and saving everyone some cash!
Glad it was helpful!
100 percent was my issue, daughter tried to open door in a snow storm bottom latch cable came out of the handle
Awesome!
How do you access the screw on the bottom if the door is stuck shut? Really want to make this happen. Hate giving money to the dealership. Thanks for the tutorial!!!
I pulled the trim back a bit and reach in with needle nose pliers to pull the cable to release the door.
How did you get the door open before you could fix the door?
I pulled the trim off from inside the truck and was able to pull the cable
@@WilliamsonRidge I was wondering the same thing because the same thing happen to me with the ice thing & my door is closed. Hope I can get to the trim from the inside to get to those cables.
Thank you so much for this share!!
Thanks for this great video! Very detailed and thanks for saving us all some big bucks!
Thanks for watching!
Question, how did you get the door open in the first place? My door is shut and I can't open it. Thanks
Took the trim off from the inside and was able to get to the cable to pull it
Thanks! Great illustration!
Thanks for watching
Perfect!! Thanks!!
Anyone have experience with the top portion of cable coming out because that's what I'm experiencing
Thank you for the great video! Appreciate the time and details!
Thank you very much sir....✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
Great video!
Thanks!
great info... now if your door wont open .... how do you open it to get to the latch
Mine wouldn’t open either, I took the trim off from the inside of the truck and was able to get to the cables and latches and pop it loose.
Thank you so much. I had same exact problem. I would recommend NOT reinstalling the bottom 6 mm screw- it’ll make it easier should this happen again.
Thanks!
Glad to help out!
Saved the day bud thank you!!
How do I get the door open to work on it assuming I have the issue in which the ball slipped out of place?
I pulled the plastic trim loose from the inside of truck then pulled the cables and the door opened, I finished it off from the outside
When is the 10-year video coming out on the F-150 would like to see it
I’m hoping to have it out in the next several weeks I’m putting notes together now for it.
How do you remove screws if door won't open?
I did mine from inside the truck, pulled trim pieces I could get loose then put pliers behind trim and pulled cable, door opened.
But wait the door won't open at all so what do I do
Pull as much of the trim loose from the inside first and you can reach in behind it and pull the cable to unlatch the door then finish with the door open
How did you get the door open to work on it?
I pulled the trim off from inside the truck and was able to get to the latch and cables to pop it loose.
How did you get door open to work on it?
Pulled the panel back from inside the truck and it let me get to the cables to pull them to release the door
Thanks alot .
Great video, the question I have is where do you get the $10:00 parts and what are they called if you end up needing them?
It’s been a while since I made this video but I believe this is the part if the cable ends are bad
amzn.to/46vjstD
Thanks for that!😀
Thanks for the great video. Worked great on my 2010 Raptor. Have you had any trouble with the cables coming back off?
Nope, no trouble since.
Is this possible to do with the door still jammed shut?
Yes I took the trim off from the inside of truck and was able to reach behind it with needle nose pliers and pull the cable to release the door.
@@WilliamsonRidge how do you get the bottom screw unscrewed with the door shut?
how do you do this if its locked shut pull on the cable
I pulled the trim back from inside truck and pulled the release cable with a pair of needle nose pliers
Hey brother do you know if those door latches for that model truck have a door ajar switch inside them? I have a door ajar notification on my dash but I can not find the door latch switch. I am not sure where it is located on this truck for the back doors. Thanks!
I’m not sure either, I tried researching it a bit and it looks like it is magnetic maybe, not like older vehicles that actually had a little button that got pushed when closing the doors, I did see a few videos though showing a broken wire causing the issue that over time just worked in two from the door being open and closed so many times.
@@WilliamsonRidge Thanks man, I found out that it is magnetic and if you clean the latch with electrical spray cleaner it ends up working again.
Awesome!
How did you get the door open when it wouldn’t open?
Can’t pop off the trim with it shut
I popped the upper trim loose and took the screws out and it allowed me to get behind it enough to pull the cables to release the latch
It’s doable but not easy. Just take your time. Bottom 6mm screw was the most difficult part for me. Had to do both sides- from inside!
Nice information
I dig the channel man👍🏻 sub’d!
Thanks I appreciate it!
now you know your dealer is a crook
So how did you get the door open to be able to get the panel off? Important detail you left out.
I got inside the truck and started taking the panels off and it let me get to the cables in the door to release it
Nice vid man. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
