Pleased to see Joran back. My EQS 580 is driven on flat roads near OOS Dave in Florida and we consistently get 400 mi range in comfort mode with max regen. Recently, while most driving was under 70 mph, 90% SoC reported 413 mi which extrapolates to 459 mi maximum range. I doubt our 2022 model S in Massachusetts can beat the EQS for range.
Highly disappointed with mS lack of luxury, we bought the EQS 580. We love it’s rear wheel steering, Hyperscreen, massage seats, ambient lighting, fragrance dispenser, front/rear pillows, and automatic lane changing when road tripping. Can’t wait for Mercedes compatibility at Superchargers.

Efficiency in EVs comes from reducing the effective series resistance (ESR) in every power component as much as possible. This is vital. It also makes it much easier to keep it cool in hot weather, and under high load. If your battery has too much ESR, then redesign it to reduce it. Remember you are using very high volumes, so the cost is near materials cost. Same for the motor. Same for the motor controller. Even the wires between components have an effect. Don't skimp on them and make them small. That increases resistance and energy loss.. Redesign the layout of components to allow the shortest wire runs possible. That reduces their ESR. It sounds like Mercedes understands this, and Audi doesn't. I know I told Musk it was vital to lower the ESR as much as possible.

I tested the Q8 e-tron and was not impressed. To me it just felt like a generation behind in design and the interface. Shame I was a big Audi fan in the old days. I ended up buying the EQE. It has been a decade since I owned a Mercedes, but something about this car just felt right. I do think it is spec dependent and is probably purchased by folks that want their car to announce their position but not make too much of a statement.
I didn’t bother with any of the “sport” stuff. I think what EV’s do best is serenity and shove, and that’s a what Mercedes does well. This is the perfect daily driver to pair with a Lotus Emira. Best of both worlds.

The Q8 e-tron is the better car, but the EQE is probably the better EV. The BMW iX is also worthy of contention if you're shopping in this category.
Also interesting point - all 3 German big EVs use different motor tech. The Q8 e-tron uses induction asynchronous type motors, the EQE uses permanent magnet synchronous motors while the iX uses wound rotor synchronous motors (with brushes). Love to see how in this early days nobody has figured out the best design yet so they're experimenting with different designs.

Great test, but the title is misleading. "so efficient" and doing 3.5 mi/kWh @ 70 mph, while the Bolt EUV is doing 3.6 mi/kWh and the Bolt EV is doing 3.8 mi/kWh is a little misleading. I am not even mentioning the Tesla with 4.2 mi/kWh on 70 mph. And if I am not mistaken, the Tesla Model 3 did 305 miles @ 70 mph with a 75 kWh battery. While the EQE did 304 miles on 90+ kWh battery. Not sure why EPA is a thing for you guys ? Many manufacturers are posting lower EPA in purpose. "See, they overdeliver". But in real world, Tesla is the one who beats them all.

    • @bullshitbingo2259

People have to understand that german manufacturers were barely even trying so far. They still sell a large percentage of ICE cars and only shifted focus over to EVs in the last 4 years or so.
The new and already available ID.7 introduces a new efficient drivetrain, which will be used in other VW brands and models, too. The ID.7 is still based on the old MEB platform but that seems to be good enough to beat most of the competition.
The ID.7 with the upcoming bigger 86kWh net capacity battery has a projected reach of 665km/413miles per charge, that would be a good 4.8 miles per kWh.
Mercedes will reveal the CLA end of next year and starts delivery in the beginning of 2025. The CLA will be the first car on the MMA platform, which is an EV-first but still a mix used platform which can hold combustion engines, and is projected to achieve at least 740km/460 miles of range with a 90kWh battery. That would be an impressive 5.1miles per kW.
Those are real world estimates, numbers could vary tho.
Nevertheless, Tesla and Tesla fanboys should be aware that Tesla will come under pressure and needs to innovate fast. Tesla is losing ground on important technological fields like HUD, Lidar, Autonomous Driving, 800V, Vehicle-to-load/grid, newest level of matrix led (the one which can actively communicate with the environment) and various comfort features like adaptive suspension etc.
To be frank, especially the higher priced Tesla models X/S are increasingly weak offerings. The huge price cuts were an answer to the decreasing value for money. Tesla is popular for their base Model 3 and Ys, even more so after the upcoming facelifts, since the gap between the trim levels of each model but also the gap between the smaller and bigger models have become negligible for an average customer in a lot of cases. They have enough range and enough speed in the base Model 3/Y for their everyday use case. Acceleration and FSD (which does not even work properly) is kinda their only argument to get customers to buy the higher trim levels, while space is the sole argument to go for the bigger car.
