I wrote a sea shanty! Big thanks to @ToniLindgren for adding all kinds of "salt" to this shipwreck tune in the way of toms, snare, midi strings, mandolin, and harmonies.

Do not call yourself an idiot. Do not denigrate yourself. Phones have a natural inclination to die. They are constantly on the lookout for ways to end their miserable existence.
Thank you for that good laugh kind stranger 😂
Basically, phone are cats of the world of electronics
It must not have even died anyway, since we are listening to a recording from it.
@@gavinjenkins899 It must not have been trying hard enough.
electronics yearn for the sea
To me, the coolest, most interesting people are those who are multi-talented, especially if they are good at a wide variety of different things. Elle is one of the coolest people on CZcams!
I second that. 👍🏼
Elitist
@@shazzthedon WTF!?
@@MatthewTheWanderer why do you have to define people by their “cool”-ness, and then rank them not only by how many talents they possess but also how they then compare to other content creators. Just treat everyone equally and fairly
@@shazzthedon OMFG are you SERIOUS!? STFU you rude weirdo! How could you possibly be offended by what I said!?
"Lost to the sea" - double meaning of the phone's fate, but also the fate of the sailors.
Title suggestion "The Sailors Way". As a former sailor, I can tell you the ocean is a cruel mistress. Sailors both love and fear her and I think your song does a fair job capturing some of that.
I second this suggestion. I am not a sailor, with no intention to be, but both my parents are and my brother aspires to be one so I definitely agree that this song just gets what the sea is, especially to sailors.
As a retired sailor, I felt that song. Wonderfully done.
Ahoy mateys, just wanted to share a demo of a sea shanty I wrote recently. This was inspired by some footage of the ocean I saw floating around on TikTok which evoked the mysteries of the briny deep, and I couldn't resist adding to the already long and lush list of sea shanties out there. Incidentally, I started writing this song a few days before the passing of Gordon Lightfoot (a songwriting master famous for his own shipwreck song) so now seems like an extra good time to share this in honor of his memory. I hope you enjoy it! [And too bad about the phone, but that's what I get for being a doofus 🤪] Yo ho ho, that's all for now ye landlubbers. I'm off to get some grog! --Reina
Those phones can be pretty tough these days but not sure with all the recording gear it was probably hooked up to. =/ Hope it was salvageable.
You never really said that Gordon died , just in his memory . Of course , everyone should already know that , it was a sad day in music ! What a great singer / songwriter ! ! ! What a great song , to play in his memory ! ! ! Love it ! ! !
Title: My Heart will Cel On
wondering if you saw the movie Fisherman's Friends?

"Hear The Roar" it just fits so nicely
Seconded
I don't think so. Beyond The Deep fits much better
@@steakismeat177 yoooo thats pretty good!
Maybe something simple like “Journey into the Stormy Sea” or “Lost at Sea”
Something else might be “Oneway Journey”or “The Wind’s Cry”
I love this as the name because she starts the first verse using it and brings it back full circle with that line in the last one. It also reflects the roar from the video that inspired the song
This is incredible. I expected some comedic song, but this is an actual masterpiece.
The ending is ironic and pretty awesome. You called out to the dead in the sea, and they took your phone as confirmation. :)
LOL. The irony is delicious.
Oh well, appears Prometheus was
so taken, he had to take a small
sacrifice📱at the end🤳. :-))
@@mayflowerlash11 Tasty, tasty irony. And plasticky.
Great job! I sailed for 70 years before I was too old. I didn't just listen, I felt your song.
The red sun verse gave me chills!
"Yes we see that red sun on the rise
we have no fear of luckless skies
our ship is fit our captain wise
and we'll reach our harbor by and by"
Especially the middle two lines
Especially "we have no fear of luckless skies" like OooAhh shivers in delight
That wave at 1:47 was timed perfectly.
Love that you captured the "Red sun in the morning, sailor's take warning" into your Shanty. Excellent work Reina.
And also the J. Alfred Prufrock reference, the monsters singing each to each.
I'm from a VERY long line of sailors & grew up with,
"Red at night,
Sailor's delight.
Red in the morning,
Sailor's warning."
...& variations on it, like sailors', and "sailors take warning", etc.
✨️What an amazing shanty this is, huh?!✨️
Heave and Blow, that is what this song should be named
The creaking of a seaborne wooden ship was magnificent.
That was awesome with the sea background sounds. That wave crashing after the first verse was perfect!
Well done and well sung. I would not have known this was not an old traditional song had you not told us. Bravo.
I am seconding a name I found the comments: Hear the Roar. I love this as the name because she starts the first verse using it and brings it back full circle with that line in the last one. It also reflects the roar from the video that inspired the song.
As soon as I saw the title I knew this was going to be epic. I was not disappointed
You should call the shanty "Marusía." It's a Galician word meaning a rough sea but also the smell of that ocean. Galicia in NW Spain is known for its rough seas and seasoned sailors. That's the word that came to mind when I saw the initial video. I absolutely loved it.
Fantastic song, I love it! I’d call it “Heave and Blow”
I'd consider "Down to the Briny Depths" as a title also.
I like both of these choices! It's such a shame that the briny depths devoured the phone, though. That blows!
Yup. Heave and blow.
Vote for Heave and Blow
Heave and blow will definitely be easier for people to remember
I love that you left in the last bit of the video showing your cellphone falling to it's salty demise!
A new sea shanty! Beautiful! A classic. Sailors will be singing it for the next hundred years. From someone who's been sailing the oceans for for 50 years: you've captured the spirit like an Old Salt! Purely authentic, all the way to invoking the storm tactics and required confidence of facing the sea's challenge. If you can, please post that as a standalone so I can play it on my sailboat as I voyage the Pacific.
Keel Down - which is the goal of sailors to keep the boat afloat, but also sounds like kneel down - what you do before an awesome power - and that is what a raging sea is
My goodness, your song sounds like a real sea shanty! You did a great job there. 👍
As a former sailor, and having sailed upon the Bering Sea, I gotta say well done to both you and Toni.
You captured the somber feeling and hopelessness/ helplessness against the forces of nature. We all resigned to our fates when getting underway...
Your creativeness is becoming legendary. You and Toni create the best music. Sorry your recorder took a dip. We hope it's ok.
A cool Title for this Classic Song: “The Call of the ROARING SEA”🥰🎸🎸🎸
Yo ho, I love your song! You and Toni are so talented. I loved how the roar of the sea added to the tension of the song. However, your phone falling into the water was priceless.
It did, unfortunately, have a price 😂
Such an excellent vibe to this song. I feel that the phrase "Souls of the Sunken" captures the feeling and meaning ... That's my suggestion for a title.
that is a great title aswell
I am a second mate in charge od navigation of ultra large oil tankers, i find this extremely relatable and soothing, thank you
“Shall Not Find Our Graves” works as a title. I also agree with “Heave and Blow”, as others have suggested. Great tune!
We Canadians find the songs of the sea fun to sing. You mentioned Lightfoot’s Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And there’s lots by Stan Rogers. Can’t wait to stamp our feet to Barret’s Privateers and the Mary Ellen Carter. Or even the song that should be our national anthem, Northwest Passage. Thanks for adding another shanty that we can use when we raise a voice or a jar. :)
Yes, RdC should definitely plan to cover some songs from Stan Rogers, especially "Barrett's Privateers" and "Witch Of Westmoreland" (which Stan covered from his pal Archie Fisher, but made his own)! "Maryellen Carter" could be a great addition, too!
Maybe you can answer a question for me then. In the musical (Come From Away) about the passengers stranded in Gander, Newfoundland after 9/11, did they base the song that sounds like a sea shanty in the bar scene on an actual shanty and, if so, what is the title? I can't find any mention of it in the program notes I've seen but they also don't mention the religious songs sampled in another piece and I know they did it there because I recognized the song from my own religious tradition.
I am loving how you brought so much real tension into the story. The ominous waves building beyond the rocks, getting nearer. Great engagement with nature to tell its story!
The musical elements really do add to the depths. You and Toni amaze.
You never fail to amaze me. The wide spectrum of tunes you put out is fantastic. I’m a fan for life.
I think "Home at Last" gives a deceptive foreshadow appropriate to the story. Beautifully done, as well. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely beautiful. A fitting tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent.
My favorite Lightfoot lyric is:
Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
“Souls of the Sunken “ is my vote for title.
My father was based out of Reykjavik Iceland on a destroyer in 1942 & 1943 then transferred to a battleship in the Pacific in 1944 & 1945. He sank 2 U-boats and shot down numerous kamikazes. When I asked him “weren’t you scared of the U-boats and the kamikazes?” He replied, “ Oh hell they were nothing compared to the damn storms!”
Great song. I love how the waves work with the rhythm of the music.
“The Sailor’s Answer” -
That’s my title suggestion, taken from the line at the end of the first verse about answering the call of the open sea. The rest of the song feels like an answer that says, “Hell yes, we’ll brave the dangers and keep faith in our safe return!”
jesus this was amazing, im not a sailor but i lived on an island and I'm very familiar with the sea, and wow i could really feel this song, gotta listen to it again!
I love how you incorporated, "Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning" , without actually quoting it. I think a good name would be, "The Harbinger".
Glad you caught that reference!
Great title suggestion.
Nice touch at the end (Before the phone suffers the fate of the lyric) Nails along the strings, sounds like the tension of a ship about to go down. Beautiful song, Reina. In my head, I hear it with full accompaniment.
The Sea's Roar. That's my thought. It's good to see you're still making music, Reina.
The open sea is peaceful... so is the rain... even downpours...
Love it, so talented and such a dramatic ending!😮
Reina you have a way with words. A great songwriter.
"Red sky at night, sailors' delight; red sky at morning, sailor take warning."
The best line, for me, from a song that describes what it is like, especially on a smallish boat, in a storm is Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". "Where or where does the love of God go when the waves turn the minutes to hours."
Bloody marvellous! Such a talent, you’re quite the epitome of a polymath, I’m loving your stuff. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Marvelous, mystical & enchanting! 🌟
This is excellent. Don't take this the wrong way, but I immediately was hearing this in my mind as a crossover with The Wellermen. Kudos.
I was sincerely hoping she would say, "I'll save you the stress and let you know that...this is actually the Atlantic Ocean."
What a great song! So happy to have found your channel. There is something quite profound about what you and Toni are giving to the world and the folk tradition.
I love that you are free to write and create when ever inspiration calls, because you are very gifted and I love your work!
*OMG: that was actually quite good! Although I really shouldn't be surprised, after all a good wordsmith is likely to be a good songsmith as well. Good on ya!*
Beautifully moving. You captured the ominous strength of the ocean, and the tough determination of the sailors.
That was great! Nicely sung, played (you too, Toni!), and awesome sea footage. That phone fall at the end, though. Ouch.
Beautiful song and wonderful music arrangement ,Reina ! Congratulations and great like ! Best wishes from Austria 🎶🎤❤👏👏👏
thank you for coming up with something new! like a breath of fresh air!
"They Shall Not Find Our Graves"
Very nice. I had the same with the first spring sunlight coming through my window. I wrote then a very little sweet good morning song. So I know what you mean and no. You're not an idiot. Stop doing that. You should be very proud of yourself and everything you've achieved and everything you still work to achieve. Cheers
Or "The Souls of the Sunken" which evokes those calling from below and those heading there! PS: Have you all seen the movie based on a true story of Cornish singing fishermen, "Fishermen's Friends?" Top folk album of all time - last I heard.
Fantastic song, Elle and Toni - lyrics, singing, set up - and the phone going to the briny depths - all awesome! ...❤...
Only a genius would proclaim their idiocy! Nice tune and great lyrics!! :D
“Heave and Blow” is a perfect title. I liked that you were inspired by Gordon Lightfoot. Other GL songs in this vein are “ Ghosts of Cape Horn” and “Sea of Tranquility”. I did laugh at the microphone drop. Probably more because you set it up so well!
Truly Epic! Never thought I would hear a new Sea Shanty. May it sail the tides of time!
I have a hard time getting through most videos these days that are filled with jump cuts, animations and CCs everywhere. Yet something made me click on your video and the second you started singing I was immediately captivated. It's not often that happens for me. By the end of the first playthrough I was singing along with not only the chorus but the rest as well.
It had my on the edge of my seat the entire time even knowing what you told us would happen! Those last few seconds felt like ages waiting for it to happen! Sorry to hear that it did, but if that was the price for this beauty of a sea shanty to exist, it was worth it in my opinion!
Well done!
Really awesome! I can hear deep voices singing the chorus. Would not be surprised to hear this song in a movie or video game.
Great. You have many many talents. And they deserve to be heard. Title? "Heave and Blow"
Superb. Evoked images of The Perfect Storm, for me. The melody was wonderful, and the lyrics sublime.
I love it! It’s just hauntingly beautiful- you would be great writing and singing Wiccan songs and chants; the same ethereal sound. Just a great job with this!
This is a magnificent song, I absolutely love it. Ill look forward to more versions as you and your partner play this. But even as the waves added to the beauty of the song, I couldn't help to think, "aren't her feet cold?" ❤😂👍
Really nice song. You never cease to amaze with new ideas.
The harmonies are really nice.
Too bad you damaged the mic, but the sound of waves really adds to the ambience.
That is a really great job Reina. Wonderfully written. I watched and listened for a line that stood out as a possible title or maybe a repeating line that told the story in a few words, but didn't hear either of those things. I did however hear a line that I think might tell the story. How about "Home at Last"? You sounded great too. It's really well done musically too. You and Toni never cease to amaze, and yet also never to surprise us with the variety of skills. Y'all stay safe and well. Fair winds and following seas. ;))
“Home at Last” gets my vote!
This song is amazing! As I listened to it, I could easily imagine 18th century sailors with flagons of ale singing this song in an Irish seaside pub and stomping their boot- clad feet on the hardwood floor in time to the music. Brilliantly done!
Very talented . Can't stop watching. Love it.
As a retired sailor, I really enjoyed this. I am a songwriter and guitar player and I am inspired to write my own shanty. Thanks for the inspiration!
Sacrifice for art! Great video and song. So imaginative! Be careful, Disney may have a copyright on "Yo ho"!
Legit my new favorite song now and I've heard quite a few sea shanties. The pull of the dark sound!!
I just listened to your sea shanty today 4/17/24 it just showed up on my CZcams feed. Anyway I loved it! I didn’t realize you posted it over a year ago so you probably already have a title for it, but in case you don’t it could be “lost sailors boast or lamest fast words “ keep writing and singing you always bring a smile to this old dogs face!
You two never cease to amaze! A great lyric, to go along with a stellar tune and fun, creative extras. Congrats!
Absolutely awesome, Reina! Reminds me of my time at sea in the Navy. I didn't wind up in the watery grave, but there were times that I thought I might. Thanks for this song. I love it!
Wow, what a soulful melody. I really enjoy all your posts.
Nice! I served as a volunteer on a classic square rigger associated with a local maritime museum for 21 years and sang with the ship's chantey group. You've done an awesome job of capturing the spirit and music of classic chanteys. I could see this used as a hauling chantey. Do you have a background in chanteys or sailing?
CZcams won't let me like this for some reason.
Brilliant Love the song : ‘ Rising Tide’!
was going to suggest the title aswell
Great eerie song. My late father Robert wrote a song called "Montauk" which was covered beautifully twice by Kevin R Miles on piano, and The Lamb right before he died January 2023. My father was an artist, poet, song writer. I have links for his paintings, songs, obituary, and an article the Montauk Library did about him for Throwback Thursday called "The Fisherman" in the descriptions of my videos since our family did Amazing Grace in January to honor him. 🎹
Outstanding!
Name: Yo Ho, Heave and Blow
That was marvelous. Makes me want to get up and dance a jig, hoist the sail, etc. Too bad I'm old and bedridden. It stirs the blood, Matey.
Really like that, Reina. The sound of the waves really added to the atmosphere. But, despite your intro I still spent the whole video worried that a big wave was going to soak you! 🙂
Geez Reina! Goosebumps up and down my arms; hard to make happen on an 83 year old from Vancouver Island. Well done bonny lass.
That was sooo Arrr….maxzing!!!
Roaring Sea
The song references it multiple times in many different ways. If it's not called that, I'll probably call it that anyways. It's perfect for the theme.
"Poseidon's rage" sounds a little more romantic and fits the theme too. It would also give it some foreshadowing that builds up without giving the end away entirely.
I was in a super typhoon in 85 in the Indian Ocean for a couple days with rollers over 80 feet . It was a experience ✌️
I hear you. I experienced sea swells coming back to the U.S. from the Med. back around 1970. Scary stuff.

You are so funny😂 .....and talented of course.
The saying goes, Red sky at night, sailor's delight, red sky in morning, sailors take warning. This viking who knows a thing or two about sailing shallow waters and mælstrøms totally approves and loves this shanty.
Great tune! I'd say in naming tradition, this is "Heave and Blow".
Just as the first chorus started, my eyes involuntary widened.
As the third verse was half through, I got chills.
And by the last chorus, there was a watering in my eyes for the sailors never to be found.
Your piece evokes feelings, which evolve as it goes, and that is just about the greatest thing to hope for with a work of music. Cheers!👏
Into The Tempest 💦✨
I like this title.
TEMPEST TALE@@pjruland or The Wreck of the Elle FitsApple
such a ridiculous rage you have, such a smooth voice I could listen all day.
I didn’t expect to enjoy that as much as I did. That was impressive.
Your voice has this wonderful smoker quality. Don't know if you ever smoked, but it has that quality and it sounds great.
