  • This week James visits Moto Technique to explore the world of restoration and modification. Established in 1980 Kevin O’Rourke and his team have been quietly beavering away on some of the most ambitious and exciting restomods anywhere in the world. If you have seen David Lee’s Ferrari Dino then you know what we are talking about because these are the guys that built it!
    The pair take a look at at Kevin’s own Ferrari Dino which serves as the ‘mule’ for their restomod projects, look at current projects including two Ferrari 308’s which have had some serious upgrades in performance as well as discussing what is changing on the restomod scene and why it has become so popular in recent years.
    We also reveal Kevin’s most ambitious project to date, a 246 Ferrari Dino with a 600 BHP 458 Italia engine running through a six speed Ferrari 430 manual transmission and suspension and be upgraded with carbon ceramic brakes.

    interesting.. I have a question...the cost? ....just curious as it is the only thing not mentioned but I am imagining at least twice the price of a new F8? or maybe even a way lot more than that .So for example the 308s up on the ramps, the red and the black one, what would be the approximate cost for a finished car? , bearing in mind a standard 308 GTB is about 70k pounds sterling for a reasonably good one , a Ferrari Dino that is roadworthy is 200k -400k, so are we getting towards a million quid for a modified Dino? Or is that way of the mark? If it is way off the mark I wouldn't know whether that would be an overestimate or an under estimate!!!!

    An original spec Dino 246 seems like a really expensive car for that restomod. It probably lost some of the value of an original car versus restoring to its original condition. OTOH, 308s are a good deal less valuable (not cheap, but under $100K US). That makes a 308 it a more reasonable base for a restomod - sort of like the relatively low cost Porsche 964s that got Singer started.

    I don't see the point in desecrating a Dino in this way.
    I had two Dino's during the late 70's and never felt the need for a bigger engine with more cylinders. The car is beautifully balanced and plenty fast enough for the UK (or anywhere else in Europe for that matter). Classic cars are NOT all about top speed or ultimate 0-60 times. The V6 sounds way better than the V8 anyway and is easily tunable.....my second Dino was uprated to nearly 240bhp without ruining the original concept.
    Those awful gold wheels are really bad, even the diameter is all wrong - but at least easily removable!

    • @johnboardman5602
      @johnboardman5602 Před 3 lety

      Gold Magnesium Campagnolo and Dymag rims were "De Riguer" in the late 70's and 80's weren't they?
      As for desecrating the Dino by uprating the motor and running gear with later Ferrari items, I don't agree. As the chap on the video said, there were over 4500 of them built and people have been tinkering with them since the start.
      I know if I had half a million quid invested in a Dino Restomod, I wouldn't give a flying f**k what any "purist" thought about it!
      There is an argument to say that modern bigger wheels detract from the aesthetic, but I think its outweighed by the availability of decent rubber in the larger sizes. I really love the old high profile tyres though.
      Vive la difference and all that.... :)

    • @PazLeBon
      @PazLeBon Před 3 lety

      v true, to a point, even my old mx5 is great on its original 14 inch wheels, mediocre at bigger. It depends if the car is designed from the ground up to be perfect of course, which id say was the intent with the Dino but at the same time Its a Ferrari , so who can tell :D
