Dig Square Holes to Plant Trees and THIS HAPPENS

  • Planting trees in square holes is not a new idea, it has been around for decades. Trees should be planted in square holes if you have tough or hard ground. This way the roots of the tree hit a definitive 90 degree edge and break through to native soil. Planting Trees in round holes in tough ground can lead to root binding.

    Another fantastic video Jag.
    You are the only person that I have watched mentioning that you want square holes only if you have hard compacted clay soils.
    All other gardeners just mention square hole because another guy said so with no explanation or rationale on why the hole should be square. As you mentioned if you loose soil, there is no need for square hole, any hole will do.

    It’s root bound because it’s in plastic container where it can’t go through plastic. In soil I don’t think it would cause root bound as roots would find the way in deep soil.

    Hi Jag, love your vids. I have super clay (southern caliche) in some areas. I plant bare-root trees which do much better in my clay and in my hot, sometimes dry ( mini -droughts) summers. I have been growing fruit and nut trees for 27 years in three different zones and 4 different soil types. Your dryer climate is so much better for stone fruit trees than mine -- torrential rains than droughts. Love that you planted ALL those trees.

    Also break up the ground around the hole with a garden fork and get compost to fall into the garden fork holes, and the fork marks should radiate out from the tree center.

    Just get a king of spades shovel and that will easily cut through any compacted clay soils so you don't have to soak it. I have some areas of my yard that's like cement but the all steel 13" king of spades goes right through it.

  • @mattmacadamia1336
    @mattmacadamia1336 Před 3 lety

    If you have a clay soil and want to use an auger to plant trees my suggestion is to use a small trenching shovel to break up the smooth wall and add a handfull of compost at the bottom of the hole and half way up the root ball then a bucket full ontop of the soil each year to attract the worms to break up the soil.
    The other problem is trees grown in round pots for too long, they need pruning.

    Square holes have another big advantage: they're far easier to dig (using a shovel). Not only you remove less soil for the same diameter (which for a square is the diagonal), but scooping with a flat shovel out of a square hole is much more efficient than from a circular one.
    One thing though: deeper holes aren't a myth, people just forget (or don't bother to research) the real reason behind them. 3-4 feet deep holes aren't meant to sink the poor sapling half way down its length, the lower half (or even more) of such a hole is meant to be filled with better quality soil, helping the tree to develop stronger roots before it has to deal with the less adequate local ground. Note that the type of added soil depends on both the local conditions and the tree species, so asking a professional about that is a good idea before you start digging.

    Is there a reason why you didn't expose the root flare on the tree you planted? It looked like they planted the tree too deep in the nursery. I would have knocked off some of the potting soil until the root flare was exposed then planted it.

    Put a 2x4 across the hole so you can properly set thr height of the tree! And how about using a couple of stakes to support the tree against the wind because leaning the tree may cause it to be too little or too much but never the right amount. Besides, trees will produce more than they can bear if supported, especiallly straight up, otherwise the trees ends up with broken branches and wasted fruit!

    Good video. First time listening about sqare hole. I have one question if you give answer. I plant 5 feet big ashoka tree in nearby school boundary . 15 days pass out leaves are going to die. I think someone cut the roots of tree. Mischievous people are here. what I have to do to keep the tree alive. I put vridhi jal (वृद्धि जल) liquid nutrition. Let's see the result. In my area not easy to plant any size of plan. Small they dig out and cut into two or three pices and big one cut with cutter. Now third reason I come to know its root cut from inside because plant size is 4 feet now.

      The area with soil filled in will be much softer than the area around it. Tree roots can follow a circular pattern, but once the roots hit a straight edge, they usually don't make a 90 degree turn.
