    Here in India.....
    I have found easiest way to begin raised bed is....
    Cheapest rocks and rubble I have arranged. ...in rectangle shape.
    Filled it with weeds that available plenty during this monsoon .
    In layers filled with fertile soil and compost.
    Hope this would be very simple.
    Next without raising shall try to heap weeds which one can get again.... On plain ground. Weeds covering the ground becomes mulch.
    A little later good for cultivation with compost topping the same area.
    Trial costs nothing.
    I am in SOUTHERN PART OF INDIA.

    I started out using "straw snakes" (10"x30ft erosion control tubes) to make my raised beds. I then got a big wood chipper and chipped up a piles of limbs I had around the property an put the chips between the raised beds for my pathways. Once the chip pathways got to be 6-8" deep, I removed the "straw snakes" and made new beds. Now I have 3-4ft wide compost beds with 8" deep wood chip pathways (3ft wide) between them. The chips hold water and the plants don't seem to care if they grow in the compost or the wood chips. So it's a win/win for me and my garden. Just saw your "sweet potato" video and was going to get some tubers to try it. Now I know what to do, so a big thanks.

    Wood chewing bugs around here can de discouraged simply by soaking the boards in linseed oil, but you have to spread the oil in generous amounts 2 or 3 times with a couple of days in between to really get it in deep. If you have enough oil you can set up a board dipping bath in a drain pipe and leave the boards to soak over night, but that may get a bit too expansive.

    Sad day for me.Dismantled my large raised beds due to termite infestation and have another one to diamantle tomorrow.It functioned well but for all the effort and $ that I put in,I personaly feel its not worth it.Might go the metal or even brick route in the future if I do it again but for now,ill stick to just a 1 brick high bed.Wish me luck as I have a very long day ahead xD

    • @DaisyCreekFarms
      @DaisyCreekFarms  Před 2 lety

      You can coat the wood in raw linseed oil which is organic and then make raised beds. My raised beds were eaten by termites too.

  • @katythriftyunder35homeowne57

    We do all in-ground gardening- its wonderful for the soil health- we amend the ground directly and the worms and soil microbes are much happier. Also I never buy container soil- I use a mix of home made worm compost, leaves, compost, dandilion leaves (FULL of calcium), and grass clippings. Grass clippings are full of nitrogen and are wonderful for potato growing

  • @cindersofcreation

    There's a real lack of information out there for "standing" raised beds. Meaning a large box (on stilts) that not really connected (soil-wise) to the ground at all. I built one that is 1cu. Yard for square foot gardening, it's quite prolific but I've had to do ALOT to get it right; including putting mycorrhiza, worms, etc that would naturally find a way there but can't with my system; however the benefits are outstanding! Slugs/pests cannot find a way to my plants because all I have to do is spray the four corner posts on the bottom with a high-concentration cold-pressed neem oil and diatamaceous earth. Recommend people thinking about building a box on stilts when the lumber prices go down!

    • @cindersofcreation
      @cindersofcreation Před 3 lety

      Should mention I used ENTIRELY pressure treated lumber. It's naturally rot/pest resistant, the extra cost is worth it because it will need to last longer than a few seasons off the ground like that anything weaker might rot and you might come outside to a sideways garden!

    Hey Jag, love your vids. I use raised beds for my garden and even grow dozens of trees in a raised bed because of my heavy clay soil. However, the soil for the trees is very different than what I use in the veg garden.

      I don't know what would be wrong with your tree, nor do I know what the weather is like it thought this method maybe helpful, from a past neighbour who would have tin buckets filled with rain water. Apparently fruit trees love and need the rusted water. I cannot remember the chemical it is but it seemed to work for his tree's keeping them healthy all year round in Australia.
