2:54 -The denture may be adjusted to shorten or thin it out
2) Gagging during impressions
3:19-having accurate impressions is important
4:01-how to minimize gagging during impressions
4:29- Tilt your head down during impressions to open up the nasopharynx
4:41- lift a foot to divert your attention away from your mouth
4:49-sprinkling salt on tongue can alleviate gagging
4:54- topical anesthetic spray can numb the throat
5:03- dentist can modify technique of taking impressions
5:15- let your dentist know you have issues with gagging
3) physiological issues that could trigger gagging
5:34- sleep apnea, deviated septum, or gastrointestinal issues could exasperate gagging so check in with your doctor to rule those things out
4) The gagging could be psychological
6:49 - If you have ruled out all other causes, the gagging could be psychological in nature
7:29- shift your mindset
7:39. There are different techniques to help desensitize the gag reflex, such as gently touching the soft palate with a toothbrush and build up tolerance
8:00-focus on your breathing
10:10-Implants may help, as it allows the palate to be removed from the denture without compromising function, i.e: horseshoe denture

Thank you .. for ppl watching in 2023 still.. you set ppl at ease ...
I already had a sensitive gag reflex before my dentures and I just got my upper and lower yesterday and kept feeling the random gagging feeling. so glad I found your videos and channel to help me through this process
I am at day one with an immediate upper. Have just watched a lot of your videos. Thanks so much for this one.
Like Matthew below, I'm one day into my immediate upper & have experienced the gagging a lot. But I've managed it so far. I go for my follow-up in 2 days and I'll bring up your suggestions to my dentist. Thank you so much!
Got my follow up this week. Going to ask for them to be thinned and the length of palette reduced
Well all done! Get through the healing process and I guess all that’s left is SMILE!!!!
Oh dear, hope l go ok. Thanks so much for the great advice
Thank you so much. My husband is going through this now. It’s a tough subject 😢
I have an extremely sensitive, strong gag reflex. It's a nightmare going for surgery. The last surgery I had, the doctor wanted to put the tube down my throat while I was awake, because my chart said "difficult intubation". There was the surgeon, the anesthetist, her assistant, 3 students, and a woman that was just there to hold me still and hold my hand. It took them 21 minutes to get that tube down my throat. They used every trick in the book, but I was gagging so hard that my head and my feet were lifting up off the table! I always tell them, but they never believe me. It's like they think I'm making it up when I tell them how small my mouth is, and how bad my gag reflex is. The surgeon told me later, that one of the anesthesia residents eyes were as big as saucers when they finally got me knocked out, and he just looked at the doctor and said "Wow!" Now I'm terrified that I won't be able to wear dentures at all. I can't afford very expensive implants, and have severe osteoporosis too, so not enough bone anyway. I don't know what to do!!
@@bradjames4533 I found a really good practice where they make my dentures, and an amazing surgeon who removed my remaining uppers (7). I felt really good on the 2nd day! I had just the tops done, but I'm pretty much eating what I want. Sometime I have to cut my food into smaller pieces, but I haven't had any trouble with gagging at all. Don't let your gag reflex worry you as much as I did. You'll be so happy you made the right move for yourself!!
My first set of dentures that I got at Affordable Dentures I didn't have any issues with. Then I got a new set at a regular dentist that are thinner and the material seems slightly different and I can't wear them cause I gag every time. I had them adjusted so many times and just gave up and have been wearing the old set.
The top part of the upper denture should not be extended so far back. That caused it for me. They shortened it. No more problem.
Thank you..helps
Great video....l truly believe that we can all work towards wearing dentures comfortably without gagging...don't give up..their is hope.
Great video I was so depressed about the weird gagging feeling . I just hit my partials
Do adjustments open up release of chemicals in denture? Is there an option if allergic to material?
I suffer from gum disease and i have lost several teeth and my main issue is that when ever i stick anything in my mouth (apart from chewable food) like a toothbrush, lolly pop, finger ect , as soon as it brushsagainst my tongue my gag reflex kicks in to the point where i end up dry reaching (vomitting with out fluid coming out), so this makes it hard to brush my teeth.
Been looking at dentures/implants but now seeing this video makes me wonder would it be worth the money..
Did you get bumps on your gums on the bottom by the tongue? I got mine done about 2 months ago and the only thing I hate is the bumps that showed up.
I got my immediate upper denture yesterday. I salivate so much and gag a little :( It feels like it’s going too far back and touching that soft spot. My follow-up is in 2 weeks but may go in earlier. Anxiety is definitely at play too. I try to stay focused on the positive! I am proud I finally did it after 1 year of putting it off, I am happy with the appearance, teeth and gum, relief texture makes them look very real! Your videos help me a lot, Ty so much.xxx
How has the process gone for you one month later? I just did full mouth extractions a few days ago and can't even get my uppers in without gagging :( I am starting to feel hopeless.
@@EasternChristian333 Its going great! Its been 6 weeks. The gagging only lasted a few days. I had my denture relined twice so maybe it helped? Most likely, it's my brain that is gradually getting used to it.I started using a tiny bit of Fixodent and it also helps me forget about my denture since it doesn't move. Big bummer: can't eat melted cheese. OMG it just sticks to it and that can make us gag! How is it for you?
What causes thrush from your dentures
You can brush the back of your tongue in the morning and night for 2-3 weeks that'll help with gagging! it help me 😊
Can you feel the implants In your gums ?
I’m thinking most of my concerns about getting dentures has been put to rest after watching and listening to all the videos you have posted…. At the time of this comment I am 35 minutes away from 23 teeth extraction…
How did it go?
After lots of trial and error for me what was causing the gagging was the lower denture. It was the front bottom inside piece pushing down triggering my reflex.
How was it corrected? Glad you BFF of to the bottom of it.
@@kalinjax Shaved it down shorter so it didn't push down so much. Made a night and day difference. :)
Great video ♥️ thanks so much. I've struggled ALOT with gagging
I really hope these tips help. I never dealt with it but I know many who have and it sounds miserable. There has to be relief. ♥️
@@kalinjax thanks so much.... Your videos do a lot to destigmatize wearing dentures!
Me too. Going to have my upper thinned and the palate length shortened
@@wendybutler2359 OH WOW, I didn't know that was possible!!! Thanks for mentioning it 👍👍♥️♥️♥️
@@theresalayton9286 It seems to work for most and def can't make it worse. I feel like I have a mouth full of lego bricks. Gagging is awful and the more I try to put them in, the more it happens.
I have gag reflux. I just got dentures for the top and I gag all the time. What can I do to help me to not gag?
Have you heard of the product NO GAG. What do you thinks?
My issue is that I tend to salivate excessively when I eat so after I’m finished eating, I have to take mine out. What can I do?
I struggle with this and its one of the reasons my teeth got so bad to begin with.
05/10/24, just had my uppers removed, honestly im freking out right now, need to hear from folks who have made the trec,,, if the temporary i have been given is what im suppoost to live with then im not going to make it,,,help
may I please get a transcript. I don't absorb info from videos however I have excellent retention from reading. We simply don't all learn the same way
Did you get a transcript??
I SO SORRY i dont gag...... i cant chew at all and i use the glue right before i eat. i use the glue and lol that lasts maybe half of a sandwich. then i will pull out the bottom to finish the rest of my food. im still hungry at the time and i just give up. my stomach after giving up, will start to feel like nothing but air/gas. i am so over this feeling. I NEED HELP CUZ I SERIOUSLY CANT IMAGINE LIVING WITH THIS FEELING. IM 43 AND IM IN PRETTY GOOD CONDITION. NO GREY LOL YET AND IM NORMALLY ACTIVE. NO ENERGY AT ALL. THANK YOU FOR READING.
I use fixodent max hold. It's in a dark blue and gold box. I spread it around the whole inside of my lower and apply some of the fixodent powder on top. When I put them in my mouth I hold them down kind of hard for about 30 seconds. Then put my top denture in that has some adhesive on it. I won't eat or drink for about 2 hours. This usually works pretty well for me. Just can't eat certain things that are crunchy or chewy. I eat cheeseburgers by cutting them into bite size pieces. I hope this helps. Let me know.
Iam 2 years in and I have a problem gagging whenever I cough, I dont like to eat with my tops in. They are very annoying to me. I wish I could become comfortable with my dentures in but it has been a battle for me that I cant over come.
How are you doing now ?
I had my immediate dentures put in right away. They fit horrible from day one. They remade them. I just got them yesterday. They fit somewhat better, but still have a large gap at the back of the upper (the first set did as well). So not only is there a gap, but it's thick. Is there a way to fix this issue (again) without having them remade again? Thanks
It's been two years since this comment. Did the dentist manage to resolve your issue with the dentures? I just had my full mouth extractions a few days ago and am having a terrible time trying to get them in my mouth without gagging
@@EasternChristian333 no. They didn't resolve my problem. I just had to get used to them. It took a good week and a half of wearing them every day to get the gagging to stop completely. I won't go back to the same place. I figure if they can't get them right after two times, then it's time to move on. I'm trying to save for implants. Hopefully by this time next year I'll have enough.
Can you gag with dental implants?
If you have to spray something to numb the back of your mouth or throat in order to wear dentures then that's a real problem. That doesn't sound right.
I am so nervous about having to get dentures. I have me initial appointment the 27th. I have no one to talk to. My Multiple Sclerosis meds ruined my teeth. Gagging is a huge concern so I called the dentist and begged them to fight my insurance for implants. They said they would do it but I’m not hopeful…
I went to Mexico for my implants and do not regret it one bit. Look into it. Just make sure you find a qualified surgeon and prosthodontist
@@nothaber8130 I can’t afford it with my insanely expensive Multiple Sclerosis Meds. 😌
Gagging is normal. You are normal. You have to remember that.
@@nothaber8130 what is the name , number and website? Thank you!!!
I just kept getting non-answers from my dentist.
Listening to you, why couldn’t my dentist simply listen as I kept complaining about the denture covering so much of my soft palette that they won’t even stay sealed?
With anything I try eating filling up underneath the denture, it literally made me sick, therefore, I have simply stopped wearing them so I don’t vomit.
I already had a severe gag reflex before needing a top denture, which I informed the dentist beforehand.
This is my biggest fear. I'm just beginning the process. I think knowing that I gag easily is what made me wait so long. But hey, you can only fill the same teeth so many times. I broke 3 in two weeks and said enough is enough. I go for my impressions in two weeks and the ladies said they would make sure to give me numbing cream or spray to help with that. I'm terrified of a denture and my dentist when I was in for the consult didn't seem to have time to really sit and talk to me about all my concerns which is making things worse.
@@jennifershaffor9675
My dentist is pathetic when it comes to answering basic questions and, notice the date of my comment, though I’ve repeatedly complained about the inability to regularly wear my dentures because of gagging, figuring out on my own that they won’t seal because they cover my soft palate, which he shrugged, saying he could adjust them yet didn’t. I’m still waiting and, to say I’m beyond disgusted with him would be a huge understatement.
I would suggest anyone in need, would have a better luck raiding Washington’s grave for his wooden dentures than use this guy.
I hope you have a more competent dentist.
Can partial or full dentures cause GERD? How about the vagus nerve! Notice my congestion in my nose is worse no allergies
I'm not sure if it can cause GERD. I'll have to ask!
I have the stuffy nose too bad!!! I have noticed tho it's worse if my tops aren't in right it makes it not exactly aligned like
My sinuses are definitely affected by my dentures but it makes sense to me. Am especially aware of it during allergy season and the severe forest fires where I now live.
The gag reflex is found by using your finger on the roof of your mouth, and gradually touch deeper, its an area that we all have, take the denture back, because the lazy dentist used to much cement, that extends back into the gag zone, simple.
Just buff back the back end off the reflex nerve, dentist makes them too thick,as to not have them snap when you bite hard down, just trim them back ourselves with a $20 grinder buff tool, too easy.
For some reason I can’t get past the gagging part like omg help ! I’ve never had issues with gagging on anything! 😢 Everything yall are saying is what I’m dealing with right now ! 😩😩😩
I'm on day one with upper denture. Just had the final front 6 removed this morning. Gaging is a real issue. Should I ask my dentist to shave back the pallet a millimeter or so from the back of my mouth? I know my dentist mentioned it really changes how it fits and stays in place with the roof pallet. This is so uncomfortable. What have I done.
I’m on Day 6 with my upper denture. I know what you’re feeling. I wore mine for 2 days after my extraction and took them out to sleep. When I tried to put them back in the next morning I couldn’t because my guns had swollen. It hurt so bad I took them out and had to be without teeth all weekend. I went for a post op and realign today. I can wear them again now but I keep feeling that gagging. I know my teeth were bad up top.. so I had to get them out but I’m so frustrated. I can’t eat. I can’t go to the gym. I’ve just been at home everyday all day minus a trip to the grocery store for ice cream. I pray this gets better.
@@konceited704 Keep them in. only take out for 10 mins to clean and rinse your gums. Make sure your dentist adjusts every few days. The more the better. I''m now on day 7. My bite isn't there totally, but my dentist did a small adjustment today
@@zaarrd69 Thank you for the advice. I’ve been keeping them in now. I’m on day 12 now. I still have some stitches left but my gums are healing and not sore anymore. I am sick of eating applesauce and mashed potatoes. I went to the mall yesterday and had some Chick fil A nuggets. It took my like 20 minutes to eat them but it was such a treat. 😂 Only gets better from here.
Is a partial flexible
denture better?
No that’s what I have and still I gag. I’m walking around with no teeth in the front 😅😂
After I wear mine for a couple of hours I always start feeling sick at my stomachs what can help that?
Unless it’s a gagging issue making you feel queasy, I’m not sure. Have you brought it up to your dentist?
Me to I am over a year out and still get nauseous after a few hours I seem to live on zofran
If they’re new that sounds normal. Since the acrylic is new it does have a taste that your body doesn’t like. If they are more than a few months old then I would see your dentist to determine why your body is upset.
@@Angela-Petty-Johnson77 After more than a year this isn’t something you should try to live with. Either the top denture goes too far back or you personally have nerves that are too good at their jobs and your body is getting upset.
I do too and my dentist wants 300 to adjust it
I’m saving for getting my teeth removed/ getting dentures now. At 28yo it’s embarrassing and humiliating. Kind of scared that I will have my teeth removed and not be able to have dentures due to being someone prone to gagging :/ better prepare for a single life haha
I had mine removed at 28 also
Try to go with implants if you can
How are you doing?
I am 38 and on the process
My dentist says they can't shorten it they thinned it still gaging
Same here!😢
I just got my upper full plate and lower partial plate dentures today, and I definitely am gagging a lot. I also wasn't able to eat with them in. My dentist says that should get better and I pray it will. These things costed thousands and I was only able to get them because of a generous loan from a family member. I never could have afforded them myself, and I don't know how I could afford a lot of adjustments. I've been going around with only 6 teeth for a year and I was so looking forward to being able to smile without being embarrassed. The dentures just feel so weird and unnatural.
Like a mouth full of lego blocks
It has been a year since your comment. Have there been any improvements with your dentures?
I gagged really bad with my first impression. I almost puked, the second one was better....I did the fitting last week...omg, gagged again. I pray I will be able to wear them. im so scared. I would love implants.....but im on medicaid.
Tell them to thin the top and shorten it up.
I have gastritis so even when I brush the back of my tounge and top of my mouth too far back... I gag, it just started about 1 1/2 years ago.
So I got mine thinned and shortened and I don't gag nearly as much
Me too. Getting the palette length shortened and thinned later this week.
I had bad gagging at xrays, same bad gagging at impressions and gagging/panic attack at 1st fitting
I'm so disheartened I cannot wear without . I'm young. But had a bad misfortune. I too suffer from emetophobia, if I'm on an airplane and we're going down, I am sure I would be as scared as everyone, but would pray not to be sick, and not to know others are sick. This denture process has been nothing short of traumatic. I went in, not even considering gagging so I had not been worked up. The top cause gagging and my dentist said to keep trying. . . It has now been one month and I still can not wear them. I devastated and terrified And I just want to eat food not looking 90 years Old without heat your whole face collapses, comma I'm lucky this happened during covid because I hide my collapsed face with my mask. But quality of life is diminishing. I also lost both legs. Ballet was my life I am hopeless.
OMG. I feel so sorry for what you're going through. I hope things improve for you.
Kristi love your hair awesome guess
Thanks, Gayle! It held onto the purple toner so it's a little lavender here haha!
Thought you would letting your natural grey come it ♥️
What about a horseshoe upper denture???
You will need a lot of fixative
What you mean by fixative?
I had all my teeth cut out and got dentures but i fucked them up cause i took a dremel to it cause they kept gagging me. Been thinking of getting a new pair someday. Was part of a free denture program at the dental school.
Oops. Very few people can dremel them at home, unless its a tool you know how to use for your work
There not useable?
At first i thought i got on wrong channel Lol
I have struggled with my dentures 😭💔 I want to wear them but haven't been able to. I had all my teeth removed since the end of January
How are you doing with them now ?
My partial doesnt cause gagging but ive had times where food (noodles, bok choy) has gotten caught in the upper plate & thats what caused me to gag.
Yes you 100 percent can get a removable denture without the pallet being covered cause I have one
Where are you from? I have been looking for somewhere to get the paletteless teeth. Can't stand my dentures
Thank you
@@jeanwatson1571 tennessee
I have my own pencil type grinder,to take the back edge off the gag reflex nerves,if you touch the roof of your mouth,no gag,if you touch deeper, you gag,its not rocket fucking science, trim it back, round it nice, buff it smooth, problem solved.
I gag so much over the last 8 years that I only wear my teeth on days that I leave the house. Then, after I take my teeth out, I get intolerable TMJ pain. I am considering botox to see if it helps. But... tic tacs help me gag a little less. Candy that won't clang around and make noise.
You look way to young to have dentures. (user pic)
omg me too on the tic tacs the only way i can put em in for a short amount of time.. altho i have since given up completely and just stay toothless i am not making myself suffer so people can see a nice smile... and i smile anyways :)
i also have chronic jaw pains now its a completely different bite
What about lots of saliva
I've been wearing mine for over a year and I still gag on a daily basis. Multiple times a day
Awful
yours is permanent implants, you don't have the problem we do.
I wore dentures for two years so I create videos about both dentures and implants.
Don't come to the uk because all you can get here is private dentist's & I've been to 4 different dentist's because of my gag reflex costing me time & money & all I get is stupid advice.
DO NOT GET DENTURES this is thr WORSE decision ever such a joke this definitely does NOT WORK
I hope this helps me bcz my top partial gags me every time! Thanks for the tips. 🩷
