    Superb video. By far the best one out there on utilizing Throttle Stop on an Alienware M-series. I would also suggest undervolting your GPU with MSI Afterburner. I just spent half the day setting up the undervolts and repeatedly benchmarking, until I got it tuned just right, with a custom thermal profile/fan curve. I'd been utilizing this Alienware M17 R3 for about two years, without doing any of this. Considering Dell has recently replaced all components, including the chassis, I'd best make make the adjustments and get as much life as possible from the unit.

      @@MashITTech A quick question mate, what difference will switching between the Quiet and Balanced profiles on the undervolted CPU?

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  Před 3 lety +1

      Ok, I will cover this in my final video tweaking the m15r4 but essentially:
      Quiet mode locks your cpu at 45w
      Balanced mode let’s the cpu max out up to 105w (less if you undervolted)
      Once you apply the undervolt the quiet performance will still stick at 45w but you will get more performance for that 45w than stock.
      The balanced will run as in my video so hopefully cpu maxed at 4ghz with less watts than stock (mine was 84 I think)

    If I offset the voltage on throttlestop, then not save it immediately, and run cinebench and 3dmark. Is the results off cinebench and 3dmark based off the stock pc settings or the throttle stop offset?
    What am I paying attention to when I undervolt it under throttlestop to know if it’s unstable? Do I just slowly increase till it crashes or so on throttlestop. Of course not saved. Just finding that sweet spot

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks mate. Once you have adjusted the voltages make sure the "ok - do not save voltages" is checked and apply, you will now see your offsets at the top right so you can see they are active. Now run throttlestop. If you are not sure if it is working just look at the watts it is using during cinenbench. Stock mine uses 105w after undervolt it uses 85w!
      When you run the benchmark included in throttlestop, if it crashes or you get errors then the undervolt is too much. Also make sure you run time spy or similar GPU benchmark and also put the machine to sleep and wake it, if any of this causes a crash you have gone too far and need to back off.
      Hope this helps but ask away if there is anything unclear 👍

    1) I take it that the undervolt applies to all profiles as all these do is to change the multipliers?

    Thanks!

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  Před 3 lety +2

      Ok,
      1. Correct, it will apply to all your profiles.
      2. Yes, as an example if you just undervolt and don’t drop multipliers in balanced mode it will still creep up to 100c as that’s the way dell designed it (it doesn’t ramp the fans up until late 90s). By using tcc at 90c you know your machine will drop the watts if it hits 90c but with the undervolting you get more performance per watt so you will get the best of both worlds

Because my laptop is so expensive I got a really good warranty, now will undervolting void this? If so then if I use tcc which is built in then will that void it?
    My other question is that I first see that you have these settings on an m15 so would I use the same settings for the m17? If not then what do you use that'd be absolutely safe and "stable"?
    I went to reddit and searched if Dell would void the warranty if anything happened with it undervolted BUT others commented saying using throttlestop does not store logs so it'd be impossible for them to find out. I'm just terribly worried that after all this time and all this help you've given me so fast and efficiently that I'd break my laptop, void my warranty, and all within a day of having it. Throttle stop and afterburner don't need to be open to function. They flash to the cpu and GPU control chips at the "firmware" level.
      Generally these control softwares from alienware, Lenovo, etc. are just adjusting the fan curve. Maybe high performance unlocks a few watts (or takes away with quiet mode) but I doubt it because forcing the system to throttle does the same thing. I would use the fact that with the alienware software closed completely it will save the fan profile-so set it to balanced unless adjusting the lights or whatever and close it down to save the processing power. With a proper undervolt and thus thermals under control you won't need full fans (and if you're like me can't stand the noise) and it would make little difference anyways. Then in quiet mode there won't be enough power used to ramp the fans up. Then you would adjust the profile you would like in the throttle stop taskbar menu as it controls the undervolt multiplier and uses a negligible amount of power to keep open. If anybody knows a way to have an open application control the throttle stop profile please let me know.
      Happy solid modelling! I get my X17 in a few months!
      Also if you do manage to save a bad undervolt setting and you can't boot, you will have to clear the cmos by pulling the cmos (button cell probably) battery from the motherboard and that will reset the cpu firmware controller like you would do if you applied a bad overclock with afterburner.

    Wonderful video very informative unfortunately I'm still unsure just how to set up a profile on throttlestop. Can I use the same settings as your profile for mine? I have a M15 R4 3060
    I'm trying to maximize cooling while I'm mining, aside from mining temps are usually very decent with fans on performance
    Also have you received your 3060 R4?

      Hi there, yes use my settings and when mining use the lowest CPU profile I created to minimise power use as it has no effect on your mining rate. And no, unfortunately Dell just keeps pushing our date back with no reason. I have recently found out they have no stock of cherry 17" keyboards so I guess that is the reason but they won't answer :(

      @@MashITTech Ahh damn that's precisely why I opted for the stock keyboard as I was out both a PC and a decent laptop. I was using an old Lenovo Tablet while I was searching for a good long term PC but everything was either scalper priced or had a 3+ month wait, so I got something in stock to keep sane lol. I opted to get the M15 R4 3060 and ordered an Alienware Aurora 3090/6950xt that is only waiting on 1 part to ship, so I'm stoked for that, and I have the R4 3060 while I wait.

    Nice Video! Any chance to get a guide for the M15 R6 with Intel 11800h and RTX3070 graphics card? Got my laptop yesterday and after playing Warzone it reached 86 degrees and throttled. On the other hand I am concerned about the undervolting that it may destroy the cpu :(

      I have the same laptop, dell blocked undervolting in a bios update but some people have a work around
