It's kind of a sad way of seeing marriage. Once you reach a black belt, there's nothing else to learn and nothing else to do. Who would want to spend 50 years of their life in an "endgame"?

I was going to suggest something similar, for him to be allowed time undisturbed by his girlfriend to just wind down with rest or whatever activities he likes. I give this wind down time to my husband too, and even for my young kids after school. Even I don’t like being bombarded when I just got home tired after a long day, it must be normal.

I love how intuitive the kids are. Their advice is actually hitting the heart of the issue and because they're children, the couples are actually hearing what they're saying instead of feeling defensive and lashing out.

The advice about giving the sister a gift and telling her how she feels is perfect. I've done it with my boss before. I thought she didn't like me but after I gave her a gift for her baby (she was pregnant at the time), she started treating me nicely after she realized she had been taking out her stress on me. I was also relieved to know that it had nothing to do with me. She was just stressed out from work and needed someone to take it out on.

i think gavin might've actually made a difference to that couples perspective on being equal and making time for each other. gavin is such a great 7 year old.
i think tori and julian put problems on evan that a child doesn’t understand, because to them, they’re not important and shouldn’t be dwelled on as much. his “would you marry her question” was straight forward, and frank. to a child, why would you be with someone you don’t want to marry? and even as an adult that’s a question a lot of people should be considering.
Something that i realized is that children can know better what they want, more than adults. If a child doesn't want to engage in an activity, then they won't. They know

He did have a point though. There are different types of relationships so it’s important to acknowledge what that person means to you. I think the kid probably meant “Do you see yourself spending the rest of your life with this person?” If yes, then these small things can be worked through. If not, then perhaps this isn’t the relationship those two are seeking.

I liked his thought process and his head was in the right direction, but it's not that simple. I like playing Valorant, but I'd hate if I was forced to play Pokemon Go, ya know. Just because you enjoy one videogame, doesn't mean you enjoy them all. If she had to play Pokemon Go as well, it would be like forcing someone who likes hiking, yet hates sports to play basketball. She's not going to enjoy basketball just because she likes going outside.
@@idontcreatecontent741 Doesn't hurt to try though, right? It shouldn't be a forced thing obviously, but as a couple trying to find a common ground is pretty crucial. It would be a new venture for both of them to not only explore their neighborhood together but also have fun doing it. I don't think it's a bad idea at all.
I think the main problem would come when the girlfriend and guy weren't actually spending time together when out because he was on a video game on his phone. Not even whether or not he likes pokemon go. Smart thought on the kids part though

Gavin seems really intelligent especially for his age. He was suprisingly articulate and mature, he seemed to be able to reflect around an issue and problemsolve using a reasonable amount of logic and empathy.

@@sueboo5830 keep in mind it's a 7 year old giving advice. Since they are still kids, they might not have the deep or complex comprehension behind what they say, but they are very honest and nice. It's still a solid point that Gavin brought up though (about teaching).

I love how the kids view everything so simply and so black and white. For some of the couple’s issues it makes their solutions very realistic
The kid that suggested the seperate rooms for the couple in "coming in hot" is actually not far off of some solid advice. One contributing factor to high tension when coming home is each partner being in different stages of their day, one just transitioning from work to home while the other has already been at their at home mode. allowing that to equalise and letting someone reach that level first can help reduce conflict caused by that incongruency.

As a couple's therapist, watching this was extra entertaining! On a serious note, advice giving isn't really therapy nor should a licensed therapist rely on it too much. Skill building, reflecting, and education can support the beginnings of change that the patient is looking for in their life. Also, caught myself during the video saying too much "And how does it feel to hear your partner say that?" lol.

As a couples therapist, did the guy who liked being inside and cooking give you any type of vibe? He is only willing to commit to the one chore. The one he likes to do. He apparently doesnt even clean the kitchen after his mess. And seems reluctant to participate in their shared time by including shared interests. He still gets 80%, after it being a main issue in their relationship? The look on his face also seems to say that he knows exactly the type of person he is being. And that type of person, in my opinion, is spoiled brat lmao.

@@wwxx23 For my individual clients, I use evidenced based treatments, classic one being cognitive behavioral therapy. This involves supporting you building skills, identifying negative thinking patterns, and problem solving. It's more than just listening, and depending on the client, a certain style may be more effective. That's why it's important to find the right fit when it comes to therapy!

I mean, for some people marriage is a “level up” in their relationship, but not everyone needs to get married for their relationship to be at that same emotional level. More and more couples are deciding not to get married and to be in a long term relationship that is just the same as any married couple but without marriage.

Phat disagree. Some people aren’t ready, don’t have that connection yet, don’t know if they match up completely yet, don’t want to be married at all, etc.
Just because someone isn’t willing to propose right then or ever doesn’t mean they don’t love their partner and don’t see it working out.
Some people just don't want to get married 🤷♀️ legally it's a lot to handle. If I were to get legally married to my wonderful partner he wouldn't get the health benefits he has now and I would take a pretty big cut to my disability income.. You can plan to be together forever with somebody and not get married! Hell people get married even though they're not prepared to love their partner throughout every different life stage 🤷♀️
For a kid, it's great advice, but I think the better questions are "Where do you think this relationship is going?", or "What are your expectations of this relationship?". They're more open, so it allows a deeper conversation to start without making it specifically about marriage.
i think with chores, it would be fun to do it together that way you get it done faster and also can spend time together and talk while you clean up
These kids are so insightful! Breaking it down to simple but significant points that are otherwise clouded with all sorts of emotion. This is what therapy often is! Speaking to a neutral party who hears you out and gives honest feedback and suggestions....theyre often hard to think about but necessary, like we saw!!

Love is understanding, respecting and caring for your nearby person. If you know how to love, you have nothing to fear, because you understand everything somebody else is going through, being compassionate and thinking both the other and yourself EQUALLY

With the couple who couldn't decide how to spend their weekend, i feel like the entire problem is the assumption that they have to do everything together. It's ok to have different interests and do those things separately. But yeah the 50/50 split is a great solution.

So funny story I used to like Sims, my husband got me playing and then I realized I was spending hours doing thing for pretend that I really needed or wanted to do in real life. After that I couldn't bring myself to play. But then he got me into playing Skyrim and I was totally okay playing at things I couldn't do in real life 😂
What I love about this is that the kids suggest a simple solution that it seems like the adults have completely overlooked. I love their frank point-of-view because it puts into perspective that we have a lot to learn from ALL of the people in our lives. Not just our peers
What it kinda shows me too is that when adults try to solve things like that, usually what they really try to do is have their way. The gf was trying to get the bf to always go out on the weekends with her and the bf was always trying to stay home. To both of them it had to be all one persons way or all the other persons way. Whereas kids on the other hand (sure selfish kids exist, but in general...) are more likely to think about the team/group, so "well let's just split it" is way more obvious common sense to them. Then as they grow up, society/life kinda beats that out of them sadly.

@@VMYeahVN I think a lot of people would dismiss this as utter insanity but I really think kids need representation/bigger voices in politics. Sure many of the things they'd suggest may be impractical, but just as children teach parents about themselves every day (something many parents will attest to) so too can kids teach adults in general and remind them what it means to live beside each other whether it be neighboring homes or countries.

I think this is because adults handle mostly based on their ego. People usually feel more comfortable criticizing the other than coming up with solutions and change their own behavior

Irl therapist here and I'm impressed! Pokemon Go (compromise) and separate rooms to cool off (regulating and taking responsibility for our own emotions and then coming together to process them) are excellent suggestions! Great job, kids!
The children's responses seem to be very direct and simple in both compromise and communication, with not very much analysis into the situation. Do you think this directness is typically useful in therapy?

Julian and her seem to have trust and commitment issues. I hope that either they can figure them out or Tori should break up with him. They were the only couple that I could audibly feel the tension between the two and it felt like it was serious.

To be honest their better than counselors who make six figures. Thats what I love about children. They have an insight that as we grow we tend to forget. Really amazing idea. We should talk more to children.

Yeah for some reason down the road these things are forgotten. Guess that's just shows how society shapes us.

The entire video I was just smiling cause they make it so simple they see a problem as a problem that they can solve which is not what adults currently do we are interrupted by intrusive and unessary thoughts. I really think more people should start thinking like kids or their younger versions
This is really beautiful. Kids can identify simple problems and can find simple solutions. As we grow we get selfish and try to keep our pride that we forget that we can solve problems if we put effort into it.
For the couple who is fighting over chores. I would have them switch places for a week and then see if they have a new respect for what the other is doing.
Thats almost what he said to do, teach her to cook so she can help out with cooking so he has more time for helping with cleaning
