Most Ranger games have levels that each follow the structure of an episode, but none of them actually adapt any actual episodes (aside from that one FMV game on Sega CD). I liked Shadow the Hedgehog, like yeah, ice physics everywhere, everything was over the top edgy, and Sonic with guns really is not a good idea, but I somehow found a lot of enjoyment in it when I was young and don't think its that bad to pick up and play these days anyways

    • @kfcnyancat
      @kfcnyancat Před 2 lety +5

      I'm of the opinion that none of that was the actual problem; the guns were fun as a game mechanic, you get used to slippery movement after a short while, and they could've made a darker Sonic game without it coming off as forced (I'd argue Black Knight is thematically darker and the section of the Sonic fanbase that cares about the lore often argues that's the best story in the series.) The one fatal flaw of Shadow the Hedgehog was the mission system. Making you replay the game a stupid amount of times, and most of the missions that aren't just getting to the goal suck, and on top of that, the need to fit cutscenes in this branching format is what made the story nonsensical.

      Speaking of Friday the 13th, that's another NES game I think has a bad rep because of an AVGN review. Yeah, it has problems - particularly the nonstop monster faucet - but it actually has a very interesting underlying design. One bad game I loved is Hidden and Dangerous. The fact I loved it makes me want to say it's not bad. But the controls are bad mostly the fault of the Dreamcast's controller and the frame rate is bad. again mostly down tot he Dreamcast. But it's a great game all the same. Oh and the game is kinda too easy with how easy it is to shoot enemies.

    The Bullet Witch segment made me think of Wet. Yes, that's the name of the game, just Wet. I guess SEO wasn't really a thing yet.
    Anyway, it was a PS3/360 era game that basically tried to combine Max Payne's bullet-time shooting, Prince of Persia's acrobatic platforming, and Devil May Cry's character action scoring system. And it actually had some neat ideas on how it did that. Like, for example, your health refilled faster the higher your combo counter was, which encouraged you to play stylishly and aggressively even if you weren't going for a high score - something that was pretty refreshing in 2009, when most shooters had you spending half of each combat encounter hiding behind walls and waiting for your health to regenerate.
    Also I find it funny how it's a game about bullet-time shooting that features sliding around on your knees as a key traversal mechanic, and it came out a full year before Vanquish.
    But it was kinda janky and unpolished, the story was dumb, and it tried way too hard to be edgy. So I get why it reviewed poorly and sold worse. But it's still a game I think about a lot.

    The load screen music in Dragon Warrior 2 is also a chip tune cover of a pop song. Look for"Love Song Sagashite." That game predates Goonies 2, but not Goonies 1 which also had the Cindy Lauper cover.

    Earth Defense Force 2017 is exactly what every action shooter game needs to be. It follows the age-old DOOM adage, "plot in video games is like plot in a porno, it's there but it doesn't matter," to paraphrase (read: butcher). Even just the randomly-generated weapons, stupid amounts of explosions, and giant bugs flying hundreds of feet through the air only to get back up and spray you with acid on the higher levels should be enough for anyone to think that it's something special. I LOVED that game. Thanks for giving it a well-deserved shout-out!

    SOS: The Final Escape (Disaster Report in the US). It's a Playstation 2 survival game where you are stuck in a city being destroyed by an Earthquake.
    it's full on jank up the ass with stiff controls, low budget graphics, terrible voice acting and the frame rate dips to the lower teens regularly but man is it a great game. I love it.

    Your bit about Gunblade N.Y. and L.A. Machinegun’s Wii port was particularly eye opening for me for a very specific reason:
    I’m a rail shooter/light gun game fanatic. I love the genre for it’s inherent simplicity + the ways devs try to build on that either with style/aesthetics, spicing it up with the odd gameplay deepener if they can, or augmenting it somehow with physical feedback. I am enough of a rail shooter/light gun game nut that I actively wish more of them got home ports and am more then happy to play them with controllers or a mouse (though obviously, a light gun is preferable), even in scenarios where certain things have to be sacrificed to make that happen. For example, I am enough of a House of the Dead 1 fanatic specifically that I willingly paid the ridiculously expensive price the PAL version of the Sega Saturn port goes for, despite the severe graphical downgrade (and odd bit of graphical corruption), the problems with lag and frame drops it incurs, and the mid-level load times that grind the action to a halt (which are an absolute death knell for rail shooters imho), because ultimately it was more accessible and still cheaper then buying an actual arcade machine, or trying (and likely failing) to get the much cheaper, much more polished if still downgraded PC port running on newer hardware.
    But Joe and Jane public aren’t complete maniacs like me, with a very specific interest in the genre; to them, that all sounds like madness (and it probably is). To them, the appeal of games like Gunblade N.Y. and L.A. Machineguns, which did indeed rely on the physical feedback of those giant, hefty mounted machine gun and the impressive soundsystems to help sell the experience, is completely gone when that’s all pared back to a Wii controller and your probably much less sophisticated home sound system. If you’re not into the very, very basic gameplay- so basic in these two that you don’t even have to consider reloading- then they’ve gotta be dull as fuck and entirely pointless ports that serve very little purpose. Which is a perspective I honestly hadn’t considered until you raised it, as daft as that is to admit.
    Gotta admit tho; even if you’re not wild about the games themselves, their soundtracks (composed by Virtual On’s main music dude Kentaro Kobayashi) are straight bops.

    Ive been trying so hard to re-find this information about monster party and every time I find it I lose it again days later to the ravages of the internet. But here's a fun fact that's maybe true
    So as far as i know the dead bug that goes "Sorry, I'm Dead" is one of the only monsters in monster party that didn't get censored. He's a parody of some kind of Japanese monster toy that was popular when the game came out, and it kinda looked like a dead bug, so they put him in the game as a joke. Then it got localized and nobody knew what to make of it and they just left it.
    If anyone can back me up on this, I've been trying to keep this alive though folklore after I heard it on a very early /vr/ thread.
