Suddenly realized that the Sonic IOS port situation is exactly the same as with Super Mario Bros. Deluxe: faithful preservation, modern additions such as a world map, cutscenes and challenges, tons of extra content, and even the sequel game as a bonus; in short, the definitive version of their flagship series’ debut title trapped in an a neglected mobile port.

Look, every few games there'll come one that you'll be interested in. I think there is a magic here that keeps people coming back and I think if you take the bad with a grain of salt and savour the good, you'll be fine.
But Sonic IS in a good place right now. Mania did well, and even if Forces was underwhelming, it wasn't a trainwreck. The IDW comics are absolutely fantastic and the movie did really well! Even Team Sonic Racing is a great kart racer.
So now we just wait and see what the future has for us. Hoping for a Mania sequel, or a S3&K port in the Retro Engine or even a Sonic Adventure remaster/remake. Sonic might remain the butt of internet jokes for years to come, maybe rightfully so, but every time I think Sonic just can't recover, there comes a game that makes me remember that there is a reason this blue idiot endures.

Compared with Mario, Sonic still didn't found his formula for the upgrade to 3D.
Will it really translate great in 3D? They have to find "that thing" that is still missing.
The 3D one that I really enjoyed was Sonic Generations, and even that one still being good, it isn't as the original ones (Sonic 1, CD, 2, 3, Knuckles) and Sonic Mania was.

There are a LOT of Mega Drive (sorry, Brazilian here) collections with the original available on every system. And the best version is hostage on iOS, with no way to play it comfortable, with a controller, on a big screen, without a lot of tinkering.

I've got some fond memories of that game. One year me and my Dad took a trip up to Oregon from California to retrieve my grandmother's car (I think my Dad was going to sell it for some reason). We met up with her and other family members, and I forget how, but I ended up with a Gamegear and Sonic, Streets of Rage 2, and Columns. The whole drive back I played it, the backlit screen helping me see in the night time hours on the road. I must have had a stash of batteries or a car inverter, because I don't remember running out of juice.

Minor correction, sorry if it's already been pointed out! TL;DR M2 were talking about their "GigaDrive" MegaDr...I mean _Genesis_ emulation architecture, and needing to add extra VRAM to that _emulated hardware._ They weren't necessarily implying that they were pushing the 3DS to its limits, they were probably far from it. Besides, we all know the true limit of the 3DS was being able to render 4 (8) Ice Climbers simultaneously in Smash Bros!
All joking aside, they upgraded _their emulated Genesis_ the same way the NAOMI upgraded the Dreamcast's VRAM by doubling it, or the Sega Chihiro could use more than the 64 MB RAM of the XBOX it was based on. Can you imagine if the 3DS was able to do all it did with only 64K VRAM? The _Genesis_ only had 64K of VRAM, so they hacked their emulated Genesis to run as if it had 128K VRAM. It makes a lot of sense when you consider they basically doubled up on everything in the background with a copy being rendered for each eye.
I was originally going to compare the GameCube to the Triforce but that's reportedly just a retail DOL-001 mainboard with all the extra arcade bits tacked onto it. The Chihiro _sometimes_ added extra RAM to the original XBOX, and you can actually play the Chihiro games that required 128MB RAM like Virtua Cop 3 if you've got an original developer "XDK" system. If you are certifiably insane and equally skilled, you can solder an extra 64MB RAM into an original XBOX and it will run those Chihiro games with little fuss! I had to look it up again to make sure, but the OG XBOX (and the Chihiro by extension) actually had a unified memory architecture. Kind of neat for 2001, although a bit ahead of its time.

You gotta try the 3D on one of the "New 3DS" models, the super-stable 3D is so much of an improvement it makes the original 3DS feel like an unfinished proof-of-concept

2:00 My first Sonic game was Advanced 1, so when I went back to Sonic 1 andd didn't have a spin dash I fumbled through the manual to see if there was something I had missed. The manual said Sonic could perform a "spin dash" but that was just what it called the action of running forward and pressing down, making Sonic roll into a ball.

My first Sonic game was Sonic 2. When I played Sonic 1 I felt like I was playing an archaic version of sonic. I didn't play Sonic 2 for the speed. I always went for the rings. Tried to collect them all. Still do, actually. Even so, Sonic 1 felt old when I played it. If my first experience were with the advance series, I certainly would feel like going to the prehistory of gaming when playing Sonic 1.

Well, the Sega Ages do have a "widescreen mode" of sorts, just stretched to TV/Switch screen dimensions. Also, the 8-bit Sonic game got a 3DS Virtual Console-esque release with bonus features like borders and save states, which I have fond memories of playing. It runs great, and you don't need the thicc boi Wide Lens to play.

In my teen years, I ended up getting the Master System version of Sonic on the Wii Virtual Console because my brother and I didn’t realize it was the “wrong version.” So thats effectively the version I grew up with. Still had a fun time with that version, and of course I’ve played the Genesis version a bunch. Either’s a good time.

The drop dash actually wasn't created by Taxman and Stealth apparently, the leaked prototype of Sonic 3 a month or so ago had the drop dash.
It wouldn't surprise me if Iizuka gave the drop dash idea to the team, recalling its original implementation, but ultimate removal from Sonic 3.
