5:35 Funniest part about this story - You would think the programmer/writer of the message for helping pirates would get into a lot of trouble for hiding a message like that, maybe blacklisted in the worst case. Shame you didn't talk about the Sonic classic collection on the ds, that one also got a story behind it. The main programmer was Stephan Dittrich who was a homebrew developer for a Genesis emulator called JenesisDs, he one day stopped his work and after some months he shows up in the credits of the classic collection. Sega actually hired an emulator developer! He even improved the emulation, because the games run better on the collection than on JenesisDs.

The Master System versions of Sonic 1, 2, & Chaos were all re-released on the Wii Virtual Console, but I get what you're saying, because the 8-bit games are generally good. It wasn't really strange to see, though, since Sonic 1 8-bit was originally made specifically for the Game Gear to help advertise that handheld, but since the MS used the same overall hardware (& was still selling extremely well in Europe), Sega also asked for a console version.
In fact, Sonic 1 8-bit was the entire reason why Yuzo Koshiro even formed Ancient Corp with his family! He offered programming services, but Sega didn't make those kinds of deals with individuals, so Koshiro had to form a studio in order to start development.

I expect it was done by 2 interns in 2 weeks and they were probably crunching really hard just to manage that. Sega was obsessed with rushing games and not giving them big enough teams at the time (a theme they started with Sonic 2) and it wasn’t until both this and 06 nearly killed the franchise that they started giving games more than 6 months to be developed again, but they did the same thing with forces, it got rushed and had only 2 level designers with no experience to design everything.

Yes, one was on store shelves for longer. But in the initial months of ‘95, Virtual Boy outsold the Sega Saturn. 2:30 - I think the "movie" that the movie theater was advertising was actually the Sonic OVA movie from 1996, which was released in two parts just one year before Sonic Jam was released to the Saturn. The Sonic OVA movie was a two-part animated, original video animation (OVA). It was a direct-to-video production, and was originally released in Japan on January 26, 1996 and March 22, 1996. There was an English translated dub to it which was produced later, but it strayed a bit from the original vision.

I hope that SSFF delves into other Sonic topics as well - there are a lot of interesting concepts to dive into on the handheld end that feel SSFF-friendly:
    - All of the handheld-exclusive platformers that were fairly well-liked and promptly never seen again (Sonic Advance 1/2/3, Sonic Rush + Sonic Rush Adventures)
    - Some of the wildly experimental stuff on handhelds (turn-based RPG Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, arena fighter Sonic Battle, 2d racers Sonic Rivals 1+2, so many more)
    - SO many racing games. *so* many.
And that's without even getting into the more well-trodden territory of the Wii titles, '06, and the funkiness of modern-era 3D Sonic.

I bought Sonic 2006, and it's strategy guide, when it released. It was the last Sonic game I bought for the longest time. I'm still haunted by the load times. The strategy guide was also equally a mess, it was divided between the three characters in a very weird way that was hard to follow.
Also, my friend bought the game boy advance port of Sonic 1 as their first introduction to Sonic the hedgehog and they were thoroughly disappointed.
I really liked seeing all these ports and I'm definitely up for more Sonic port expiration!

After watching this video i still strongly believe Sonic Genesis is not even a port of the original game, but the Sonic Cafe version released back in 2005, except the controls feel wonkier on GBA and it has a lot of minor tweaks and differences.
Like the choppy (or non-existent) animations for breakable walls and blocks, the way Sonic's slope physics got toned down significantly and you cannot reset your horizontal speed just as you land on a solid surface after taking damage (making you keep sliding backwards unless you jump), the inclusion of the special stages and A TON of smaller details that the devs either added on top of it (like the Spin Dash and correcting some of the animations, unlike the title screen) or completely missed, making it even more inconsistent.
Sonic's sprites now have a few little dirty looking pixels and the exact same palette with a soft green gradient when you're underwater in both Labyrinth and Scrap Brain Zone and the same goes for some of the objects in act 3.
Every sideways spring got flipped/mirrored in each level leaving their highlights and shadows in the opposite direction.
All the switches were replaced with the ones from Marble zone for some reason.
The screen crunch can easily make enemies and other objects go back to their original position sooner.
And the amount of invincibility frames the game gives you after getting hit is still pretty much the same as the mobile/iFone port though you'll most likely not notice that on your first run, mainly due to the awful frame rate and everything else.
So i don't really think people should keep calling it just a port of the original release given how it shares more similarities with this version while still keeping the aesthetic from the other one, unless someone compares the 3 of them head to head in the future.
Now that'd be very interesting to see

Now it’s hard to get to, as iTunes is discontinued, iPod Games even more so, and only those who bought this game for their iPods back when it was live, can play this game nowadays.
