Hello All
Welcome back to the Channel and Part 4 of the Farkling of my new BMW K1600GT. The fitting of accessory side panels which cover some 'awkward' gaps in the side frame of the bike on both sides. They fit the GT and GTL and there are also different ones available for the Bagger
These are the Wunderlich ones, supplied to me by Nippy Normans in the UK and the links are below (both Nippy Norman's if they supply your region or the Wunderlich site if not)

Nick, thank you so much for these excellent tutorial videos. Not being handy with most tools It gives you the confidence to have a go following your guidance. Don’t stop and keep the excellent videos coming
Thanks Tim. Glad they help 👍🏻
Just fitted mine to my new k1600 and following your video was much easier and faster than the original instructions, brilliant video 👍👍
Yes they’re a bit tricky Billy. Glad you have them on 👍🏻
Thanks Nick, great fitting guide. I have to say, these aren't for me/my K16 I'm afraid, I'd like to see the outer panel edges following the lines of the frame more closely. I'd also prefer to have the fasteners on the inside - push fit, featuring a subtle method of a pull release.
I agree about internal ‘plugging’ but she’ll wear them a while as sometimes they offer something not at first realised 👍🏻
Always tasteful quality appointments superbly articulated. These will look most appropriate as the designers intended these Guggenheim BMW’s. That Din Connector also known as a “pigtail”. A good thing to install and have on the ready for the heated gear, battery tender and/or battery jump starter. Which when not in use merely gets stuff back in behind or can be left slightly protruding out with a protective cap on it. Well done Matey.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I’m almost tempted to drill one (as it’s not standard fit) and connect a socket direct to battery (Nippy Norman sell these). I found on my GSA the relocated DIN socket connected directly to battery was used by friends in tour to charge phones on coffee stops as it didn’t switch off with ignition as the Canbus one does 👍🏻
Got it. Nonetheless. Well thought out process.
Hi Nick, always like your detailed run through, I can most definitely see why you have filled such an ugly gap, as you say the GS has that space sorted, strange BMW chose to leave the K1600 like that. Definite improvement after the panels are fitted.
Thanks Stephen. I agree although I wish the panels had internal ‘plugs’ so the spigots didn’t have to pop right through but I’ll run with them for now 👍🏻
An interesting watch , Thanks for taking the time. I have K16 on order ,Build date late October, and was thinking on how simple it might be to add my Optimate pigtail to the battery for charging purposes, have you done anything similar out of interest? Cheers
I have an optimate Canbus Edition (can be used with the Canbus or as a standard unit). I have it in Canbus mode with the K1600 and I simply use the DIN socket to male/female bullet pigtail and plug that in the DIN socket on the RH upper fairing. If you don’t have the Canbus charger then you could get a pigtail with standard battery connections on and run that out the battery compartment and Velcro it to the side of the frame for sure 👍🏻
Nice video, but I'm not very impressed with the covers themselves which seem out of place with uneven panel gaps (especially on the left side).
Do the plastic original panels have to be removed every time you need to open the new covers?
I’m not sure what panels you refer to. There are none fitted as standard?
Hi Nick, I'm Nicola from Bari (Italy), I bought a K1600 gt last week. Beautiful motorbike, I left a 2022 R1250 Rt for the K. I noticed a notable difference in the sound of the radio, from the Rt to 120 km/h it could be heard very well with the helmet closed and I could hear almost nothing on the K. It turns out that it's different the type of sound between the 2 models? Thank you.
Hi Nicola. Mine came with the radio. If I’d paid £600 for it separately I’d be very cross. It’s rubbish!!
Hi Nick .
I’m a former K16 owner .
I’ve had 4 over the years .
Not always a positive experience unfortunately.
I always keep an eye on them though.
You mentioned that your bike is an SE.
Purely out of curiosity is it an SE or a fully specced GT ?
I was on the BMW Configurator tonight and one can spec up a GT to an SE Spec but the actual SE doesn’t appear to be available as far as I can gather.
I’d appreciate your view on the differences between the two .
I love your videos.
Thanks for all the effort you make.
Kindest Regards
Neil Carrington
From memory the SE is the base GT with aux lights, engine protection and audio 2 (radio). That’s sold also as the ‘touring pack’. I then added the ‘comfort pack’ which had shift assist pro, central locking and alarm. The only other option was floor lighting which I added and the top box. I think mines therefore fully loaded barring anything option 719 👍🏻
what’s your view of the quality here Nick, perhaps its the camera view but they don’t look factory finish in any way. Really don’t look a quality item . Great video but side panels not for me
For sure Clive I think it would be nicer if the panel moulding had internal mounting lugs for the spigots to locate into do they didn’t protrude. I’ll keep them on a while as some of these accessories do offer other benefits (or not) with use 👍🏻
I wasn’t so sure about the quality of these Nick, they looked thin and flexible with the one on the left in particular looking out of shape, appreciate that could just be the light. Wasn’t so sure about the overall finish the attachments didn’t look so good. I did get a recent email from Nippy Normans with fill in panels for the GS, can’t recall if they’re the same brand or quality.
I’ve passed on today the possibility of inner rubbers and pegs as the pegs poking through are quite ugly. They are more substantial than they look though. It’s a composite rather than just thin plastic
That's it Nick; now you gone too far! Are we to expect you and Wunderlich to have us filling up every nook and cranny with yet another bit of pricey plastic? Is there no factory nitch or crevice to be spared? That said, just now as a past by the bedroom mirror, I noticed an unsightly gap between my knees! Can't have that can we?! Do you suppose you and the chaps Wunderlich could come up with a quick bit of kit to cover up that particular gap?!
I feel with all the comments (thanks by the way), that I’ve filled another ‘gap’ in your life and on Valentine’s night too. Whatever did your wife say? 🤣👍🏻
