    Hi Maj, very good tests! I think you can improve the slip tip penetration a bit. For the 130 albacore, instead of using a slip ring (the slip ring kills the penetration a bit and sometimesto us it got clogged with the meat of the tunas), we usually make a hole of about 30º-45º in the shaft to pass through from it the steel cable of the slip tip. And improves a litle bit too with a 8-8,5mm slip tip and adaptor 8-8,5mm thick (the 5/16" adaptor of the 8,5mm slip tip is 10mm, we mecanice it to 8,5mm for the european M7 adaptor). regards

      I do have a custom designed slip tip that solves exactly the issues you mention, as well as improve other issues such as improved accuracy and improved penetration (which tend to go together). Unfortunately to do that I had to go to 3D design and metal 3D printing ... so unless this is done via MIM it will not be cost effective. I will probably be posting this soon, so stay tuned!

    Hi Madj,
    I hope you are doing well.
    After al those years, your videos are such a source of information and inspiration.
    Your channel remains the best when it comes to classic speargun setups !
    I just bought a secondhand Abellan (the same in this video 132cm band stretch). I would like to make some changes on the gun, do you advise:
    - covering the gun with carbon?
    - change the original mechanism for a Eremesub double?
    - Does it received 3 pairs of 14.5 band or I need to change the muzzle in order for it ?
    - handle modification.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks a million and a friendly hug.
    Ary dos Santos

      I did put a cover of carbon on all my Abellan guns and I feel they shoot better. At least the gun should be stiffer and the CF protects the gun from hits and dings. I did change all my triggers to the latest Long DR trigger and I feel they are by far the best. I don't think you need 3 bands x 14.5mm unless you are using an 8.5mm shaft or thicker.

      @majdq8 Hi Majd, the Abellan is an old 120, actually with a 120cm band stretch (110 nowadays). I will use 7.5mm and 8mm ×1.40m shafts.
      I'm determined to upgrade this lovely jewel.
      I already done a layer of 340 gr of carbon, and i will do a last layer of 200gr on the enteire gun on the end. The carbon Laying is not a problem and with a vacuum pomp, it is much easier and the results are great.
      My biggest challenge is installing the long double roller and the to do modifications or cutting on the trigger seat, steel plate and maybe handle.
      In order to install the long double roller, do you need to cut and steel plate and handle ?
      How much layer of carbon did you apply on the back order to reinforce the thin part on the wood ?
      Do you have maybe some pictures ?
      Thanks for the reply, and your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Maj. Can you yell me what the band stretch is for this gun from muzzle to shark fins?

  • @solomosnavalshoots6143

    I know my friend but now I want to change set up because I bileve i lost power with 1.40 shaft 6,5 and 18mmm

      +SOLOMON ORFANOS If I was to use a roller gun @ 95cm and I wanted a lot of penetrating power at short range, I would go with a 7.5mm shaft @ 140. If hunting smaller fish where you don't need a lot of penetrating power then a 6.75mm or 7mm shaft will work perfect. A short classic gun does not have a lot of space for normal bands to contract properly, thus a roller will work better. On longer guns the band stretch is much higher and thus a roller will not give any advantage.

  • @solomosnavalshoots6143

    hello my friend what are your oppinion what shaft and set up choose for a roller 95 gun??

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      +SOLOMON ORFANOS A roller 95 might be interesting, but you really cannot compare it to a gun like in this video. The difference of power is huge but an 85 roller compares very well to an 85 classic gun. Once you get to the longer gun sizes with higher band stretch, the roller has no advantage and cannot keep up with a classic gun.

    There is a debate (mostly in forums etc) whether a set up of 8-8,5mm shaft with 2 or 3 14,5mm small ID bands @360-380%, could execute such amazing shots in deeper dives (30-40 meters).
    What's your opinion?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +3

      30 meters for sure performance will be the same ... 40 meters ... never tried but shouldn't be too different. Small ID bands have tiny cavities and thus will be less affected by increased depth since the air displacement is minimal. In the end you are trying to get your shaft to its terminal velocity ... and if you are worried about performance at depth or performance after loading for a long time ... just make sure you have about 20% more power than terminal velocity and your performance will be identical in all situations. Not many people hunt at 40 meters, and if they did their loss in performance in worst case conditions would be about 30cm or 40cm of effective range. The effective range of the gun tested here to shoot large tuna is 7meters from tip of shaft ... so just move about half a meter closer if you are at 40 meters.

      Have you tested cressi's 15mm small id red amber bands? I;ve seen abellan use them (2 15mm @ 380% with 8mm 160cm shafts), with incredible results! Do you think 2 of them would replace 3 14,5mm small id bands with similar set up (8mm shafts)?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      No, but I will soon as I have a 140 I should get soon. The information I get is that the Cressi 15mm bands are Primeline small ID bands ... so it should perform the same. Maybe the only difference will be that Cressi will have better diameter tolerances ... but rubber should be the same.
