I have reason to believe that the current Cal we’ve been seeing is a clone Cal and the original Cal was killed by Melon in a violent fit of rage. Which is why we didn’t see him in videos for a while.
A Cal body double?
Maybe the new cal is just anthony with a mustache and no glasses

Literally unlistenable without those things
Spacey beats
And the eerie washy icy synth chords

Car seat headrest dropping a mid album, 2020 really is the worst year of all time

The worst thing is that Will has already done the indietronica thing but a lot better. How to Leave Town is a 10
Ethan Fung yeah why is this melon saying he hasn’t done electronic before. I don’t think he’s heard or even skimmed it...
@@PC-ur5vu I'm assuming so. The way he's talked about the Bandcamp era CSH stuff in the past seems like he tried Twin Fantasy and didn't really care for it due to the super lofi production, but I can't see HTLT and NYM having the same problems for him

The fact that Car Seat Headrest's discography so far has been absolutely stellar makes this album hurt even more.
I don't think 1, 2, Little Pieces of Paper with "No" written on them and Teens of Style are really "absolutely stellar". :p I found this album much better than all of those albums and on par with some of his earlier stuff like My back is killing me baby.

real CSH fans know this is the direction that was necessary for will. we didn’t just want another lo fi rock album but something new and different. not better or worse
Also he’s done experimental stuff, like literally half the tracks on monomania have some type of synth on them and in his nervous young men albums he has songs not to be taken so seriously (like hollywood is) idk why fans are acting like it’s so out of character for him or his music style

I feel like will makes better music by himself. I get that he wants to make car seat headrest more of a group but I think he’s a lot stronger as a solo artist with backup musicians or band members. I think the large group dynamic does work really live
nick yeah I don’t like Andrews impact on the production or his vocals or anything he contributed to the record I feel like
Right I agree the others are only useful live. I like what’s with you lately tho ethans cool
agreed
Someone had to say it, I agree
Teens of denial was very good wtf
they arent really doing super well with this new indietronica style, however, a lot of people including myself enjoy it fairly decently, I just want them to go back to their indie rock roots.
edit: yes I know they've done this on past records but the execution of this style on MaDLO is not nearly as good. Maybe it has something to do with Will mainly using ableton to record instead of logic as he is less familiar with it, idk.
This isnt the first time Will has delved into this style though. How To Leave Town, which is my favourite CSH album, had a lot of electronica and synths involved.
The music style is not as much on fault as is the fact that the songs on MADLO are simply not that captivating to listen to.
@@lalfakzualahnamte2021 yeah I agree, htlt is on of my favorites but something about the songs on madlo havent clicked with me
@@datar0t273 Just give it time. This album has been out for less than a week and I don't get why people like you can already say it's not clicking with them or they don't like the new direction. Honestly some songs sound like they could've been on How to leave town such as There must be more than blood and Life worth missing. But if you listen to the livestream performances of the songs on this album by Will alone, you will see these are really much more similar to his raw emotional earlier works than you think. Also I really dislike how everyone repeated each others opinions about Hollywood like little sheeps. That song isn't really that bad as they make it out to be. My only problem with that song is the somewhat basic guitar riff, but I still really enjoy listening to it and its the song that gets stuck in my head the most. I don't get how all the Hollywood haters still could like Naked Giants, because it sound very similar to their songs.
It’s one guy’s project and he has done it before on How To Leave Town
@@floris1912 I would argue Blood and Life Worth Missing are definitely the better tracks on the record but they pale way in comparison to songs on HTLT. For example Blood is just a track that builds up but doesn't give any sort of proper payoff. Its like if Ballad of Costa Concordia ended right after the spoken word section.
The fact that a lot of people enjoy the livestream versions of some songs a lot more than the album version further proves this album was weakly executed.
And just because a lot of people hate on Hollywood doesn't mean they are sheep lol. Even if it does have Naked Giants vibe that doesn't mean it works for CSH. Each band has a unique identity and you just cant take the band's identity over random styles and expect it to work. That's why its so difficult as an artist to try new styles because it is more than taking an exisitng style and making a song with it., You have to take a style and make it your own, which i feel they have failed to do in this album.
As far as my opinion on Hollywood goes, i think its half baked and sounds obnoxious. Its critique of Hollywood is very surface level and unfocused, which is kinda disappointing because Will is known for deep diving into his subject matter. And the hook "Hollywood makes me wanna puke" is so teenage punk level writing IMO to be taken as a serious song. But at the same time, O cannot listen to it as a joke song because it seems to take itself seriously. There is no sense of irony in the lyrics so it must be a serious song. But its way too goofy for it to be taken seriously. You know what I mean?
Woah Melon, your head's floating

"worst furry album of the year" is a little harsh, Melon
Wow. A floating melon. And just when I thought I’d seen it all.
someone who can put the timestamp where Anthony appears?
Holding Will Toledo hostage at gunpoint in his dilapidated Toyota Camry and yelling "MAKE THE TWIN FANTASY" over and over again isn't a music review, melon
No funny comment here, just genuinely glad that Cal is appearing in your videos more often than earlier in the year.
It's annoying how you can't even say that you dislike the album because of the stans who accuse you of only wanting CSH to make another "Twin Fantasy" or wanting them to not evolve their sound. The album is mid, Will Toledo spent 3-4 years trying to hone a sound that he couldn't master, and we're left with this. It's a damn shame, should've been a 1traitdanger release instead.
You know what's also annoying? people constantly telling us that we're wrong for enjoying the album.
Eska Believe me, I've seen plenty of people insult our opinions on the album, some in this comment section even
@@ScradeCottontail no one is doing that. someone saying in their opinion that an album is bad isn't saying you're wrong for liking it.
The Based God Max You're right, maybe I'm just tired rn and kinda worked up over the kinda scores this album is getting
@@ScradeCottontail Bro you shouldn't care about what others think about you or the music you listen to. Just listen to what you like, taste is subjective.
He didn't change his sound he simply went back to his older stuff on htlt
I feel like since Will hasn’t put anything new out in years his return with new material would be more polished than this. I saw him live last year and he played a couple of these and I was underwhelmed.
i honestly felt like the live versions were a lot better. weightlifters, for example, sounds a lot better with guitars in it, for example. the track absolutely floored me when i heard it live (having been one of the people to hear it debut live). i think that's the problem with comparing this album to how to leave town, is the fact that how to leave town still has guitar in it, but this feels very barren to the point where unless you really pay attention you can't hear the guitars. i still like both albums though, just saying i agree with the indietronica assumption that most are putting out there.
Hollywood is hands down the least interesting car seat headrest song
It will be in the pit
The worst part is that I wasn't even for Car Seat, it was first performed in a 1 trait danger show...
And the most obnoxious

Good review Anthony, I agree that it could have been a lot more fleshed out, but did you really have to call Will “Car Seat Headass?”
this joke is not funny
@@EmileFeik your mom thought it was funny
The challenge of writing a song in each style that you described is actually kind of exactly what happenned according to Will's note on Bandcamp about the album: he wanted to write individual songs with different energies and just throw them together, because that's how he listens to music now, instead of whole albums. Which I guess makes this chaos understandable, if not more appealing.
Thats sad to hear from Will honestly because that's one of my favorite things about CSH; the strength of the album as a unit, and the continuity&themes within it
Yknow I just wish he would take his music a little more seriously

I love that one
"Hollywood" was the song that made me learn how to have Spotify remove a track from an album.
Personally, I liked this album, defo not my favourite CSH album but still pretty good. I love Martin, Deadline (Hostile) and There Must Be More Than Blood like an insane amount. Personally I found Hollywood very uh, abrasive, I guess, but the acoustic version of it definitely something I like. I'd probably rate the album altogether as a 6 or 7 😳👉👈 or an 8 if we include the acoustic versions of the tracks
slamming a car door for 9 minutes and 15 seconds is not a review melon.
Unpopular opinion I suppose. The acoustic version of Hollywood is really good or at least a considerable improvement on the original.
i will boldy claim this album just needs some time & ppl will come around to it. we will be looking back on this album a couple years from now & think "wow, why were we so tough on that album?" i would compare this to jpegmafia's transition into AMHAC from veteran (stylistically). yes its more accessible & can be a bit more friendly/poppy but its a maturation of style & a very good demonstration of range
“But, but what if 808 bass and squeaky synth and, and B E E P” - Will Toledo
life worth missing is one of their all time great songs imo and i honestly enjoy a lot of the tracks here but there’s no denying that ALL of their weakest songs are on this thing
The "alternative" radio station in my area played Hollywood and Ive never been both so proud and yet so disappointed in CSH.
i honestly loved it, it’s an 8/10 to me personally. though, that said, i understand where y’all r coming from

Same its like a 7 or 8 to me, but i easily understand why people hate it. It's a confusing feeling, simultaneously enjoying it a lot but understanding the hate.

Change my mind : Will set the bar way to high with his previous albums that when he finally released something that wasn’t as great as the other albums it got a major backlash of bad reviews

I thought so did There Must Be More Than Blood which is why i like these songs so much...
The entire idea of this album was strange to me. Like, as much as I loved both One Trait Danger albums, it was certainly not because they were good EDM albums, it’s because they were hilarious and subversive with their lyrics and overarching concepts. Incorporating the sonic aesthetics in a more straightforward CSH album never seemed like something that would work imo.
Anthony, mom says the beans you ate were for her boyfriend, Steven. He wants to talk to you.

This album definitely was weaker than his other albums but goddammit that's not going to stop me from loving this album
Saying that the album “makes no sense because if the door was closed it isn’t open” is not a good reason to give it a strong 0 to a light 1
I don't know if the stress lately or if this was funny but I went into a giggle fit
I actually really like this album lol
Unironically my favourite Car Seat Headrest album
Honestly this album is #1 or #2 in the CSH catalog for me, I thought it was more accessible, well-produced, and consistent than his previous work
To be fair this album is growing on me a lot the more I play it. It does feel like a long slog for being only 45 minutes long but on the whole I think it’s pretty consistently good, and has some really good moments. It does just feel like an album of album tracks, though.
It’s more cohesive than he gives it credit for, it has classic sounds from him and some that are flipped on their head but carry the same feat tune and Melody’s, his vocals are a highlight
This is car seat headrests Pinkerton.
I'm not really a fan of MADLO but I can't say I'm not interested where this new sort of era in his career will take him
I don't know man. "Can't Cool Me Down" has a lot going on - slow boil/interesting arrangement that reveals its range slowly, simultaneously impassioned & weary vocal performance that shows new pockets of nuance not present on the "teens" records, countermelodies in the synth that seem to be re-amped and recorded "in the room", without reverb plug-ins (that's an unusual approach), the arrival of a rustic lone violin in the coda. I dig the arc and intention of this tune. It has become one of my jams for this time period. I think your critiques are often about mix/eq: you like bright and highly compressed music. "Cool me down" trades that approach for depth of field and home-fi intimacy (rare in electro pop).
What I can say about this album is that it was enjoyable, but as soon as I finish it, I'm left without being effected much. It is an album that happened not much else... and that does disappoint me because I love Car Seat

anthony, closing a door then staring at it for nine minutes is not a review
this joke is not funny
Kinda sad that I have to agree with this. I do have to say that there will be blood has really grown on me but overall the project feels really bland
If it takes CSH making a subpar album just for Cal to come back, then I think I’ve finally found peace in this.
Though i do agree with everything you have to see here, "life worth missing" is one of my favorite headrest songs of all time. The mixing was done very well with the mix of synths and guitar and there was a beautiful drum line on the track too. Just wish you wouldve highlighted this track and im interested to hear what you think about it
Anthony, tirelessly chanting "there must be more than blood" over and over again for 9 minutes straight isn't really a review
You kept saying “Will” even while still just 2 minutes in, so I had to type this:
While I agree on majority of your takes, please keep in my mind that this album is an actual collaborative effort Will and the drummer Andrew.
The two handled the production back and forth (Andrew did Twitch streams of him working on some).
Also, this record’s sounds evidently came out (for better or for worse) from the two’s electronic-comedic side project, *1 trait danger.*
My favouriste CSH album will always be How To Leave Town but that's why I think I like this album so much. Like the album I mentioned, it's chaotic and wild. There's no real direction but I think that's the point. We all know how talented Will is at combining sounds and textures to create something spectacular and his decision to not do so on many of these tracks stands out for a reason. I think he was ambitious and this may have hindered his progress on certain tracks but he's definitely not one to release anything unfinished. It feels almost like a homage to base sounds you find in cheap music software which he (and many others like him (including me)) are used to when you first start making music with ableton or sibelius. That combined with the hard rock aestehtic and the funky synth lines he's developed since then I think was an attempt to bring everything that makes and has made CSH together. Finally he's whole. Like when you close a door, that hole in the wall is just part of the wall now. That's what I think he's trying to say with this album. He's trying to make a door less open by making the room whole.
I think each song had at least one cool moment to offer. as a die hard fan I like the album just fine, I’m use to hearing will work with electronic stuff so I’m not really put off by the style. it just really needs more refinement and cohesion for real. Knowing this guy wrote the ballad of costa Concordia and every other song on teens of denial I know he can make absolutely beautifully amazing stuff, I wish this album had more of that. Regardless they perform live so well, their shows are so fun I will be seeing them tour as soon as it’s safe again, I think a bunch of these songs could and will be much better live honestly.
you didn't even mention life worth missing. it's seriously a contender for one the the best csh songs ever.
Nah
To me it sounds exactly like a below average Nervous Young Man cut. When I first heard it I could have sworn I had heard it before.
Anthony why did you lock Cal in a closet??
Where is the love for can’t cool me, there must be more than blood, life worth missing
Okay so I consumed this album in a very odd way. I listened to the first three singles as they were released (Can't cool me down, Martin, Hollywood) and then I listened to Weightlifters when the album came out, but after that I completely forgot about the album for months. I only just finally finished it last night, and much to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had some highs and lows, but overall I was very satisfied when I had finished it. Perhaps I was just in a particular mindset that made it connect more this time, but it really caught me off guard how much this album drew me in

"Hollywood" has Cake vibes to me.
Will give the album a few more listens, have to say tho that "Can't Cool Me Down" is v catchy.

i was looking forward to this review, but bringing up that Will Toledo is a furry and making fun of him for 10 minutes was pretty low
yeah, looked at the score and...yeah. I would've been even harsher but that's just me, personally. Really weak compared to everything else they've dropped in my personal opinion, haha.
It's good to see that Anthony and Cal are practicing social distance by keeping the door less open.
