      Just one if the many fuck ups this idiot makes: Stockton js the better player. End if story. If he had jumped around to better teams like CP3, he would have actually won a few rings. Stats are everything in this debate since they play in different era’s. Stockton has two records that will not be broken for at least another 15 years, and thats only if a player comes ariound that mimics his entire play style. Stockton is the better player, period end of story. Anyone that says otherwise is being biased against the unpopular Jazz player.

I personally think Stockton is better, but it’d be better to construct your arguments without bringing down the other. Weak players he went up against Gary Payton, Vernon maxwell, Kevin Johnson, Kenny Smith,Tim hardaway,terry porter, all in the West! Rock solid my dude. Stockton>CP3. The only reason Stockton doesn't have a ring is because he ran into the GOAT for 2 straight NBA Finals. I love CP3 but he choked in 3 straight years in the playoffs. in 2013 the clippers were up 2-0 against the grizzlies and lost the next 4 games. in 2014 in game 5 against the thunder, the clippers were up 7 with 49 seconds left and CP3 had 2 straight turnovers before fouling Westbrook on a 3 that cost them the game and the series. in 2015 the clippers were up 3-1 against the rockets and blew the series. Now the warriors are too good and his chance to get to the finals are over but he had his chances and he blew them.

      Rob Tes so doesn't John Stockton need to be blamed by losing in the finals? And is everybody perfect? I see what you are saying bc you are right, Chris Paul should take the blame, but not all of it. Against the rockets, doc rivers drained the starters out and the bench could not provide anything. A quote by Isiah Thomas about game 6 of the finals when the jazz faced the bulls for the second straight year, "I believe that if John Stockton does not pass that ball to Karl Malone with 30 seconds left, they win that game." Many players believed that John Stockton passed too much to a fault bc John Stockton had the ability to score, but he would cost his teams by passing it too much. Both players share this characteristic that hinders their team.

    Per 100 possessions, Stockton scored 20+ points and had 17+ assists (peaking at 23 and 19.4, respectively) for 8 straight seasons. Chris Paul has never posted those numbers. Stockton did it for eight. straight. seasons.
    Despite never getting a finals ring, Stockton saw more postseason success, while CP3 has never been out of the 2nd round of the playoffs.

(Essentially his team getting a Klay and Draymond before trading for an Iggy. Daly was hired after the new unit showed potential (hiring Kerr) and the team took off. They then jettisoned the solid wing they drafted for a multi-time scoring champion (Dantley/Durant). Except in his case his team kept adding more pieces building up a rotation that's comfortably 8-9 deep.

      Minirush35 Well Stockton also had a better team and had the mail man. CP3 has the fifth highest PER in NBA history behind only Jordan, lebron, mikan and Shaq. So don't say he doesn't show up in the playoffs because he actually elevates his game. He's also number 1 all time in offensive rating and win shares per game so he clearly knows how to run an offense and carry a team. CP3 never had the luxury of playing alongside Malone and had to always do it with underachieving teammates. Put Stockton on the teams that cp3 was on and he wouldn't even sniff the WCF because he would have to carry the load and score a lot more. I mean cp3 just averaged 27 and 10 on 50/40/90 shooting and they still lost ffs. What else can the man do?!!

Plus Stockton was actually a good scorer, just watch the episode of Open Court where Isiah Thomas one of the greatest pgs ever says they preferred it when Stockton passed as he could score really well. At the end of the day Stockton performed in the big moments like when he hit the game winner against Houston in the WCF. You mean players weren't allow to CARRY the ball like they do in modern nba. So it actually required MORE SKILLS to dribble the ball because it was more strict. I admit it's more enteirtaining today but not because players are more skilled. If anything, it's the opposite.
    @5:23
    More space to get to the hoop once you beat your defender in Stockton era??? You gotta be KIDDING!!! The paint was always CLOSED in Stockton era and it's always WIDE OPEN in modern nba.
    The main difference in terms of scoring is that Stockton played long after his prime and it took him 3 years to become a great player. In terms of steals, CP3 numbers will also go down as the years go by. Same for his assist/TO ratio. It would have been more interresting to look at their numbers both in their prime.
    Defensively, CP3 is great, no doubt about it but so was Stockton. The main difference is that there were many many more great defenders in Stockton era which makes him go unnoticed.
    I love both players...so I won't say much. But one thing for sure, if the Jazz of Stockton had to face the Clippers of CP3, they would eat them alive.

      @megadrive6573 Před 7 lety +26

      No, they didn't carry the ball back then. You have the impression that ball handling is better because in modern nba, players are allow to carry the ball. Which is a lot more easier to do than playing under the rules of the 90's. It started in the late 90's and early 2000's with Iverson, Kobe, Marbury and all those guys. That's the moment when the league started to allow players ta carry the ball.
      Zone has always been used in the nba, it just wasn't official. Plus, today zone defense is almost never used. And on top of that zones today are not even true zones, thanks to the addition of the defensive 3 seconds rule. This prevents bigs from camping out in the lane to be an imposing defensive presence or rim protector like it used to be in Stockton era. Furthermore, zones in Stockton's days were still enhanced by handchecking and physical play. Not only did Stockton faced zones in his era, but the zones that he faced were more difficult, physical, and complex than the zones of today that are weakened by the multitude of rule changes and illegal 3 seconds rule.
      But we don't have to complicate this subject. The fact is when you watch games of the 80's/90's, the paint is always PACKED. When you watch today's games, the paint is always WIDE OPEN and almost everybody can get into the paint AT WILL.
      That's why Kobe Bryant hilmself said : " "The truth is, it makes the game [where] players have to be more skillful. Nowadays, literally anybody can get out there and get to the basket and you can't touch anybody. Back then, if guys put their hands on you, you had to have the skill to be able to go both ways, change direction, post up, you had to have a mid-range game because you didn't want to go all the way to the basket because you would get knocked ass over tea kettle. So I think playing the game back then required MUCH MORE SKILL."

    the tittle says "BETTER POINT GUARD" a point guard is an a court leader, basically a coach on the floor. They're supposed to run the offensive not score like Curry or Westbrook. The question is who's a better Point Guard, that answer is Stockton but better player is Paul. I rather take Stockton and he is the better POINT GUARD

    If you play 9 of 13 career playoff series in the first round (don't have to maintain stats for longer playoff runs) and never faced a Finals/Title caliber team (easier competition), you better have good playoff statistics at the bare minimum. Any top 15 PG of all-time will have similar or better playoff statistics in Chris Paul's shoes
    *Rod Strickland 1994 - 1997 Playoffs*
    21.7 ppg - 5.1 rpg - 9.5 apg
    2.9 TOpg - 45% FG
    *Chris Paul 2008 - 2017 Playoffs*
    21.4 ppg - 4.7 rpg - 9.4 apg
    2.7 TOpg - 48% FG
    1994 - 1997 Strickland faced 2 championship teams to CP3's 0 Finals/Title teams. Averaged more PPG, RPG, APG on less efficiency and slightly more TOpg. Obviously CP3 maintained his stats for a longer time so he's better, but the point is the same that it's much easier to put up big playoff stats in CP3's ideal circumstances.

    SECTION 2 - The Myth That Chris Paul is an Elite Defender
    SECTION 3 - Why Chris Paul's Playoff Statistics Are Not as Impressive

    *Prime Stockton in playoffs that only lasted 1-2 rounds*
    1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995
    18.2 PPG - 3.7 RPG - 13.4 APG
    2.45 SPG - 0.29 BPG - 3.5 TOpg
    49% FG - 83% FT
    3.80 AST:TO ratio
    Lost to 2 Title teams (88 Lakers, 95 Rockets)
    Had Stockton had the statistical luxury that CP3 does, of playing only in 1-2 round playoffs in his prime, he'd have the highest playoff APG by a comfortable margin. 13.4 APG to Magic's 12.3 APG. Also would have the highest playoff SPG average, 2.45 to Baron Davis' 2.28.
    *Chris Paul playoff career 2008 - 2017* (All Runs lasted only 1-2 rounds)
    21.4 PPG - 4.7 RPG - 9.4 APG
    2.21 SPG - 0.09 BPG - 2.7 TOpg
    48% FG - 85% FT
    3.45 AST:TO ratio
    Lost to 0 Finals/Title teams
    Stockton's assist advantage (+4.0) is much greater than any of CP3's advantages combined (+3.2 PPG, +1.0 RPG, -0.8 TOpg) since it accounts for at least an 8 PPG advantage

      1. Highest AST:TO ratio in a playoff run past the 1st round (min. 11 APG)
      Other players have higher AST:TO ratios with less APG however
      - Fat Lever - highest AST:TO ratio past 1st Rd (min. 3.5 APG)
      - Johnny Moore - highest AST:TO ratio past 1st Rd (min. 8, 9, or 10 APG)
      2. Tied-Most all-star teams (9) without passing the 2nd round with Dominique Wilkins
      - however, Dominique lost to 2 championship teams (86 Celtics, 93 Bulls)
      - CP3 has never faced a team that even made the Finals after beating him
      3. Most playoff games (76) without reaching a Conference Finals
      - despite the luxury of never having to face a Finals/Title team
      Not only did KJ set a significantly higher number of playoff records than CP3, he did it against significantly better competition. KJ lost to 6 teams that either made the Finals or won it all. In each of KJ's playoff runs where he averaged those numbers under his list of records, he lost to either a Finals or Title team. CP3 faced 0 teams that even made the Finals after beating him, let alone win it all
      KJ also played with lesser supporting casts than CP3 in his pre-Barkley years, and even when he had Barkley he played significantly better playoff competition regardless in 3 championship teams to CP3 facing 0 teams that even made the Finals.

      Nobody Touches Jordan idk if you wrote this yourself or if you copied and paste but the whole cp3 hasn't played any championship teams or has all his stats against non competitive teams is BS. Just off the top of my head ( I'm sure there's PLENTY more that I'm forgetting) I know he played the reigning NBA champion Spurs team and beat them (and hit the game winner/series winner) in 2014 not only did he beat them he had amazing numbers in that run, also his series against a perennial championship CALIBER okc team he did the same, and he just played a Utah jazz team that was the number 2 rated defensive team in the entire league this year and still got his pretty easily he was almost at 50/40/90 with 25 ppg and 10 ast. Point being cp3 gets his numbers pretty easily which is a testament to him being a good player simple.

    • @nobodytouchesmj9780
      @nobodytouchesmj9780 Před 7 lety +9

      Playing a defending champion is not the same as facing an actual championship team. I am referring to facing a Finals/Title team in the same year that a player lost to them. The 2015 Spurs were the 6-seed and lost in the 1st round, then the Clippers lost to a Rockets team without Beverly that lost before making the Finals.
      Only two seeds in history outside of the top 3 seeds have won a title, so the 2015 Spurs were not legitimate contenders regardless of their previous two seasons. as evidenced by losing to a Clippers team that lost to a non-Finals team
      The 2014 Thunder also did not make the Finals that year they beat CP3, they lost before making the Finals. 2012 was the only year they made the Finals. So once again he lost to a non-Finals team
      Utah was without Gobert for the first 3 games and Hayward was out for the last 3 quarters of Game 4 due to illness, so the Jazz were not at full strength for more than half the series. So Chris Paul only faced the Jazz's top ranked defense for less than half the series at full strength. And did nothing in the 2nd half of Game 7 when the stakes were highest.
      John Wall is averaging 29-11 in these 2017 Playoffs on 50/36/83 shooting. Westbrook was previously the only player to average 26-11 in a playoffs past the 1st round, so Wall has a chance of setting a new record if he keeps up this play. His 2017 run thus far is way more impressive than anything CP3 has done in the playoffs.

      @akeembrown7661 Před 7 lety +2

      Nobody Touches MJ I knew what you referring too I know the teams I mentioned didn't win chip I never said they did my point was that he did play championship CALIBER teams plenty of times throughout his career so my point still stands to have the notion that he never played anyone is stupid asf to me. Besides the whole basis of your argument seems stupid you know how many NBA players could have their stats "discredited" because they didn't play the champions that year???
      Yea your right John wall has put up nice stats this post season slightly better than cp3s and for a larger amount of games but that has nothing to do with everything else I said above and doesn't change the similarly amazing stats cp has and has had.
      And like I said those were only a couple I could think off of the top of my head I'm sure there are many more series we could discuss if I actually went and looked up the records and searched for the numbers

    • @nobodytouchesmj9780
      @nobodytouchesmj9780 Před 7 lety +3

      He's faced good teams, but never faced a true Finals/Title team so the point still stands. A Finals-caliber team is not the same as actually making the Finals or winning it all, with rare exceptions for weak conferences like the 2002 / 2003 Nets or 2007 Cavs.
      "you know how many NBA players could have their stats "discredited" because they didn't play the champions that year??? "
      But my point is not that CP3 did not face Finals/Title teams for one year, it's that he has never faced a Finals/Title team in his ENTIRE playoff career.
      The only other notable player I can think of who faced 0 Finals/Title teams in his playoff career as a starter is Tracy McGrady. All the other notable players that made 0 Finals have lost to Finals/Title teams at least once.
      Such as
      - Nash
      - Gervin
      - English
      - Gilmore
      - Moncrief
      - David Thompson
      - Tim Hardaway
      - Webber
      - Bernard King - 0 ECF/WCF
      - Dominque - 0 ECF/WCF
      so CP3 and Tmac's cases are especially bad, because all the other non-Finals players played better competition (Finals/Title teams) and have more valid excuses. so once again, he deserves extra criticism for making 0 WCF (not even the Finals) while facing 0 Finals/Title teams in his entire career.
      CP3's stats are not that amazing, because he's played 9 of 13 series in the 1st round and faced 0 Finals/Title teams. Rod Strickland from 1994-1997 put up better stats, with less help, and against better competition in 2 Title teams as posted in the first comment

    • @joshb8209
      @joshb8209 Před 7 lety

      I mean, Karl Malone was a FANTASTIC post player and could score on anybody from the post. All it really took was a pass down low from Stockton and it was probably 2 points for Malone and an assist for John. Blake Griffin never developed a post game other than the occasional spin-move for a dunk, or a face-up jumper off the glass. However he usually eats clock when he's posted up with the ball and takes away assist credit for CP. And I think we all know how good DJ is as a post scorer... Lol.

      Yes I agree that there is no denying how great of a post player and athlete Karl Malone was. However, he did have the benefit of playing with a john stockton like point guard. This means that Karl Malone does not have to use as much energy in possession. The Utah Jazz system was so dynamic with their pick and roll play. But in Chris Paul's situation, Chris Paul is everything for that team. People wouldn't usually say Doc Rivers is a great coach. Chris Paul makes other players look extremely better, just like John Stockton. The only difference I see between the two, is that Chris Paul could score whenever he wanted.

    Nice video, but I would edit out the comment about it being easier to get to the hoop after beating your opponent in Stockton's era (because of the illegal defense rule). Contemporary game is much more wide open to the basket because of the spacing, the (much more effective deterrent) fear of getting called for flagrants, the disappearance of the carry and travelling calls, and the rules that now all but rule out any physical contact with the ball handler. Watch a few of those games and notice how crowded the paint was and how the PG would get clawed and hammered on the way to the basket.

    As much as I like Westbrook and acknowledge his growth he could learn a lot from Stockton. John had the goat turnover ratio.

    John Stockton holds two records that are virtually untouchable. Both those records lend credit to him being the best PG of all time. This isn't even a debate, in my opinion.

    I’m the biggest John Stockton fan ever, so of course I’ll say Stockton. That said, I think this would be a legit debate if CP3 had been more durable. I’m glad y’all are showing Stockton the love!

    If CP3 can keep up his averages after 19 years, then him. If you took Stockton's first 12 years stats and compared them to Paul's current 12 years, Stockton BLOWS him away in every category but scoring.

      excuse me?
      Chris Paul first 12 seasons
      18.7ppg, 9.9apg, 4.4rpg, 2.3spg, 47,7%fg, 37%3pt, 86.6%ft, 2.4TOVpg, 6.6FGM/13.9FGA
      John Stockton first 12 seasons
      13.6ppg, 11.5apg, 2.7rpg, 2.3spg, 51.7%fg, 37.8%3PT, 82.1%FT, 3.0tovPG, 4.8FGM/9.4FGA
      In conclusion
      CP3 - PTS, REBS, FT%, LESS TURNOVERS, MORE FGM
      STOCKTON- AST, FG%, 3PT% (barely even tho he took a lot lesss threes)
      So who is blowing out CP3s stats? CP3 is one of the best point guards of all time, and Stockton is also that.
      Dont talk shit if you cant back it up with stats like i did, shut the fuck up and go to sleep kaay?

      Ana Kovacevic one thing we gotta put into consideration tho when it comes to these comparisons: average usage rate for both players over the first 12 seasons applicable

    I'm glad you finally did a video on Stockton, probably don't remember but I suggested a video idea of the pick&roll in today's game vs (possibly best) Malone and Stocktons game. Even though I'm still highly interested in the change from then to now, considering back then bigs did not shoot from distance, this a great video. Thanks coach.
