Bout Summary
Quarry used quick combinations and movement to keep Chuvalo off balance. Chuvalo came forward, exhibited a good jab, and had his moments when he got on the inside with Quarry. Chuvalo's right eye began to swell in round 5, which became a grotesque lump by the time the fight was over. As round 7 was coming to a close, Quarry was knocked down by a left hook on the top of the head. He rose at the count of three, but decided to take a knee, he got up at the count of ten instead of nine and referee Zach Clayton declared the fight over at 2:59.
Scoring at the time of stoppage 4-1-1 (Quarry), 4-1-1 (Quarry), 3-3 even.
The winner of this bout was tentatively scheduled to fight Leotis Martin - who had KO'd Sonny Liston the previous week - next. However, it was learned just prior to this bout that Martin was to undergo eye surgery. The extent of the injury (detached retina) was not yet known and Martin never fought again.
A rematch was signed to take place on the undercard to the Joe Frazier vs. Jimmy Ellis unification match on February 16th in MSG. However, Chuvalo had to pull out on medical advice that his badly damaged eye sustained in this bout required more time to heal. - Zábava
They had the Winner of this fight lined up to meet the up and coming Foreman in 1970.George pulled off the upset and got the Foreman fight instead of Quarry

@@THEDONSTR8Fightah76 No problems Fightah!!..Just been following the sport so long .There is so many stories about the game outside of the ring. Quarry had history with Foreman during George's earlier years. Back then Foreman was pretty much Training out of the California area. Sonny Liston mentored him.Quarry from the same area met with George a lot.They had a couple of Sparring sessions in which Quarry was said to have held his own as George was still young. This was around late 69 or Early 70.George always spoke highly of Quarry and said if he had to go up against Quarry back then that's one thing, but if he had to pick, then he would avoid him for the time being as he was climbing the rankings. He said his match up with Jerry would have been bad for him because Jerry was such a good counter puncher which would have offset his style. I guess he experienced that during his Sparring sessions.
George Chuvalho is under-appreciated. His impact on boxing exceeded what might be indicated by his record.
Chuvalo has the best chin of all time.
Chuvalo is one tough guy. That hook was fantastic!
What two great fighters
Chuvalo's head was so swollen in the 6th he looked like Elephant Man but there was no quit in Boom Boom (EVER!) All his losses were by TKO by referee but he never quit and he was never knocked down and sweet baby Jesus he never even backed up! So there's that and there was the BOOM in the 7th. Talk about TOUGH! Ali said "he was the toughest guy he ever fought"
Chuvalo only had two tko losses by ref and the rest by ud and rarely md
No Zack, it was a left hook as the commentator and Chuvalo himself said it was (notice the ref didn't take the opportunity to correct himself when the KO came up and again in slow mo...Oh well!)
Referee: "I had it 4-1-1 Quarry" That's why many jurisdictions don't use the ref to score fights anymore.There's no way Chuvalo didn't win at least 2 rounds! Even Dunphy had it closer. The ref is too close to the action and is too busy to see the action. You need to be sitting in the first row with nothing to do but watch the action. The ref also said it was a right hand but if you watch the Slow Mo it was a left hook to the temple exaperated by the fact that Jerry was backing up. Any time there's a split decision in boxing the ref is usually the one voting for the other guy. Worst referee decision was Patterson v. Ellis. Sadly he was the only judge of the fight costing Floyd a Third Heavyweight title.
Rewatch Ellis vs Patterson and try to ignore the cuts on Ellis’ face. Patterson simply didn’t do enough to win the decision.
I had the fight dead even, after 6 rds, Chuvalo won first 3 rounds, Quarry coming on strong the next 3. Zack Clayton was right there was no need for Quarry to get up then go down on one knee. Quarry could have just taken the count standing.

@@strangerintown3676 4-2 Quarry after 6. Rounds 1 and 2 and 4 and 5. Chuvalo took rounds 3 and 6. But clearly Quarry was getting the better of Chuvalo, just look at George's face after the fight. One eye almost shut and a large bruise next to the other eye.

Legit KO. That punch landed on the temple and Quarry later admitted he was KOed, never heard the count.
It looked like Quarry went for a nine count and misread the count. Quarry jumped right back up and appeared clear headed went down took a knee. Quarry's legs looked steady. Clayton was a good ref and fair. Like Zack said Quarry blew it.

@@vincentfisher1603 If Mike hit harder he would have had a better career. Mike Quarry was a good boxer but unlike Jerry he was not a heavy puncher. He was also thrown to the wolves early in his career being put in with Bob Foster way to fast. I think that knockout vs Foster ruined his career.
@@zippydoo9533 Mike's bouts with Rossman were clinics in infighting. Mike would have done better with heavier hands. Mike needed more experience before going against Foster but at that time period when given a chance for THE title you went for it.
Looked like Chuvalo hit him on the top of the head and scrambled his brain.

The Late-Great 'Irish' Jerry Quarry was one of a large crop of extremely talented Baby Boomer era boxers, the like of which the world had never seen before, and has not seen since! It was the last era in which we boys were told to "Act like men!" And we did! I first saw the great Jerry Quarry fight back in the late 1960s, (my WWII vet father took me to the fight). 'Irish' Jerry fought so well that I went into amateur boxing myself, achieving Golden Gloves status in the "Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions". When I was drafted, back in 1969, I quit boxing, but was an avid fan during that awesome Boomer-Boxer era. Rest In Peace, 'Irish' Jerry Quarry, they quite literally don't make men like you any longer! If 'Irish' Jerry Quarry were fighting today, he would be The Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of The World!

Amazing that Quarry had just staggered Chuvalo which was unimaginable then with one I'll fated step 'straight backward' he left himself undefended and it cost him a fight he could have won.Chuvalo's power underrated

Sonny Liston......well he kinda reminds me of Rubin Carter. He's like a heavyweight Rubin Carter. I know him and Chuvalo were going to fight each other in the future. Chuvalo had a tough chin, I'd just be hoping that he'd be able to go the distance against the hardest puncher. Foreman wasn't able to knock Chuvalo down, but there's a possibility Sonny Liston could've.

The count was fast but Quarry only had himself to blame .lf he had taken the count on his feet the round would've ended and he would've won easily lMO.

I’ve met George Chuvalo. I met him before I even knew he fought Ali. And before I read his autobiography. What a tough man. I’m Canadian. They say that Canadians are polite and not very tough, but we got George Chuvalo, a brawler.

Jerry got mixed up with the count, that's all it was! He would have went on to a decision win over Chuvalo. I always thought the ref was correct in his call, but thought it was so close that had he ruled Jerry made it up in time there would not have been much said. It was a mix-up big time, Jerry was not hurt or dazed, and the ref should have taken that in consideration before stopping it. That said, a tough, rough , iron-jawed George Chuvalo was nobody's push-over and was a threat to kayo somebody at anytime. This fight was super until the questionable knock-down win, and subsequent confusion on Quarry's part.
The suspect thing about this was that Quarry first got up and then took a knee for the count. He should have been allowed to continue.
Listen to the referees rules in the beginning of the fight ✌🏼 I think Jerry Quarry kneeling on one knee was considered being down on the count both guys great fighters
Quarry was one hell of a tough guy. Chuvalo was lucky to win due to the ref bad decision.
The referee did a crappy job all night..he was too close to the fighters, for one thing, and I remember Gil Clancy always saying that a GOOD referee is one that you don’t see. He’ll keep his distance from the fighters. Also, he was always breaking them up when they were in close, even when they both had their hands free. And it was obvious at the end that Quarry got a fast count..his head was clear and he was getting up at nine.

As much as I loved Quarry and clearly he was winning the fight (just look at Chuvalo's face after the fight!) I can't say he was robbed. Counting for the knockdowns was referee Tony Perez and you can clearly hear his voice counting over the loudspeaker. At "Ten!" Quarry was still on one knee so that's a KO, plain and simple. He just wasn't concentrating on the count. He was not unconscious, that was clear but recall Max Baer against Joe Louis in 1935 or so. He was pretty well thrashed by Louis and after 2 knockdowns he was decked a third time in the 4th round and also took the 10 count on one knee. He was never forgiven for that, but I think he simply knew that Louis that night was unbeatable. In Quarry's case it was simply that he made a very bad mistake.
Quarry was a much. More skilled fighter

@titsmcgee7800 I agree. Both hell of fighters. Chavalo was just tough as nails he wouldn't quit. I remember Chavalo and Frazier fought 2 of my favorite boxers and the referee stopped the fight in the 5th or 6th round because Frazier broke Chavalo eye socket

Quarry was clearly winning the fight.Quarry was the superior boxer,but got caught by an accurate left from a dangerous opponent.It was a pathetic shame the fight ended the way it did.

spurious technicality.Quarry relaxed and got caught by a lucky accurate left.Quarry was clearly the superior boxer.
Chuvalo won because he was a real warrior.
Despite not handling the count like Quarry needed to(Quarry rarely went down)Quarry was no amateur.Quarry was a top-ten ranked contender who had a legitimate shot at the title.However,being cut-prone,Quarry was forced to some extent in neglecting defence which handicapped him.Chuvalo,a formidable opponent,won because of a controversial rule.Quarry was outboxing Chuvalo,and Quarry was highly poised to win the fight if the fight had continued.Quarry let one get away.

Quarry got robbed. I heard two different counts going on. The point is Quarry could continue and the fight should not have been stopped. Chuvalo had a huge hematoma on his forehead and quarry was in command of the fight. An immediate rematch should have taken place as soon as Chuvalo healed up.
A very tainted victory but those things happen and Chuvaklo got screwed a couple times himself so good for him.
