  • "Documentary following the Grenadier Guards as they prepare to lead the 2010 Trooping the Colour. But these men have had precious little time to prepare; as fighting soldiers, they have just spent six months on the front line in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. This is the story of how one and a half thousand men and women join together to create one of the greatest military ceremonies on earth. It is a ceremony with just one standard: Excellence."

I think these guys are badass. How can you fight a war in the middle east, and in like 2 weeks after be in perfect dressing. Holding a flag with no errors, or hitting every note on an instrument critically intune with the soldier next to you. All done in front of the Queen of England. Talk about pressure. I'm not a veteran, but these British Guardsmen deserve respect. And not just annoying tourists snapping photos and trying to get them to break character.

As a veteran who served 30 years in the Indian Artillery. I would like to make three observations:
    1. This is a fascinating documentary, which all peoples all over the world especially soldiers must watch. Pomp and Ceremony alternating with the hard realities of combat life makes the documentary quite unique. I am proud of the British military ethos in which the military or aggressive aspects are by tradition subdued and understated. Military pride when made manifest or expressed publicly is not stained by hatred and polemics in the true professional mold.
    2. When the British left India in 1947, all the British military traditions were left intact by our new Rulers except for the language in which the traditions were being taught to the soldiers. I am convinced that it was a wise and far-sighted decision. Watching the soldiers being drilled for the Trooping of the Colors on the Drill Square, I felt I was back in the National Defense Academy trembling at the deliberately contrived rantings of the Sergeant Major. Our Drill Instructors worked twice as hard as the Cadets. Long live the British and their Military Traditions.
    3. The narrator's diction is music to one's ears.
    Colonel RS Alvar (Veteran)

It is one of the first colonial American flags, called the "old" flag, I believe. I use it in essence to display my love of America but our (and my personal) strong links to GB. In that alternate history universe, where the revolution never occurred or independence was accomplished (even if later) peacefully, I envision that this might be our current flag (similar to Australia and New Zealand). Ironically the Hawaii state flag as the 'Jack" in it.

    • @GG-ir1hw
      @GG-ir1hw Před 9 lety +3

Unfortunately the kingdom of Hawaii was over thrown by the U.S. but Britain should have stopped this or intervened. The jack was flown to scare off potential enemies of Kingdom that might try and colonies the isles and Britain agreed to it. Obovisaly britain didn't back the kingdom enough.

Many of these soldiers were serving in hostile environments, fighting and sadly some died. To come together to drill and perform in trooping the color is quite frankly amazing. It is a credit to the way the British army are true team players. They have highly developed lines of authority and command that is totally accepted and valued by the core of soldiers. Those observers who comment about the perfection of the maneuvers may loose sight that these are serving soldiers and not dedicated to ceremonial duties.

Also all the English soldiers who fought and died in Scottish regiments especially during WWI often forming 1/3 of the battalion are recorded as Scots casualties. I am totally proud of everything our Country stands for, the Forces (of which I used to be one) who protect and uphold our British way of life and the very highest standards they maintain. Who can disagree there is only one Army that can fight Taliban one month and be performing the best known Parade the next

A many centuries long tradition of the British Military and the Crown...and the public.
I feel like, when I'm watching UK military parades and activities, I'm watching military history going back a 1,000 years.
I love the videos of, say, the Scots Guard marching to the pipers with some badass, totally confident, Sargent Major with his head thrown back, chest thrown out doing his perfect moves with his long lance baton swinging his arm back and forth, haha , doesn't get much better than that.
The British military has always had such a deep connection to the public and the Crown in the U.K....deeply admirable.

It's the style of peak cap the Foot Guards & Household Cavalry get issued with.
They also have the peculiar tradition of 'slashing' the peaks of their caps. That is to make the peaks, or 'visors', of their caps vertical by way of removing the stitching, pushing the visor inwards, and stitching it back together.
AFAIK, this is done personally by the soldier the moment he becomes a Junior NCO; Lance Cpl and above.
The British Army is weird like that, happens when you have crazy old regiments.
