Rest In Peace Simon (?) And Tony may there be a place for you in Heaven. It breaks my heart when soldiers die. It's the worst thing in the world together with when a friend of yours or hero to you has died. Quite a few friends I knew have died and my biggest hero died 3 years ago. I found out he was dead 2 years ago and will never get over it. I've tried to put him in the back of my mind, but when your major inspiration dies you can't. You have to remember those you have lost.

The only thing worse than your hero/mentor dying is when your child dies. Especially when your child is an adult. I thought it would be worse if you lost a child when they were still a kid but I was wrong. It’s way worse when you lose your adult child. Maybe because they’ve been a part of your life for more years I don’t know. And when you lose them in a stupid war it’s even worse. In WWII and even Vietnam and Korea we at least knew WHY we were fighting but Iraq? Afghanistan? What the hell is my son fighting for? Not democracy. Not against evil like the Nazi’s. Not against communist aggression. Not for our freedom. Not for our way of life. We have more reason to fight in Crimea than we do in Afghanistan. Don’t get me wrong I’m not anti military or anti serve your country. Im just anti stupid fricken waste of lives, resources and money. My family has had at least one member from every generation serve his/her country for well over 1,000 years.
I pray my grandson skips the military and goes straight to college. I think our family has served enough. Time for others to step up and take our place.

Evan Friend , nice point but actually not quite true. The monarchy is head of government in form only. The Brits are politically ruled by an elected parliamentary democracy similar to the US congress, both houses. The monarchy serves to absorb the emotion, pride and loyalty of Brits, to stand for honor, order and tradition. The value of the system is that their politicians don’t become ‘fake celebrities’ like they do in the US. They don’t play to the crowds or talk out of both sides of their mouths to trick votes from vulnerable citizens as much as American pols do. In sum, the royalty serves a public purpose America might well envy, given the state of its perpetual and emotionally manipulative political chaos. Brits argue and debate only the facts of a law in parliament, leaving emotional and religious appeals of national patriotism to the monarch. “God save the Queen” translates to ‘long live England.’ Not a perfect system but it has its advantages.
