Andrew Marr looks at the life and reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II in this three-part series, which includes special interviews with Princes William and Harry, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, the Earl of Wessex, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, David Cameron, Tony Blair, Sir John Major and President Obama.
In this first episode, with remarkable archive footage, Marr tells the childhood story of the young girl who never expected to reign. He looks closely at the influence of her grandfather, father and mother and the impact of the abdication, and hears from the Queen's grandchildren about what it must have been like to become queen at the age of 25.
Marr examines exactly what the Queen's role as head of state actually entails, and follows her to the Middle East and the USA to assess the global impact of the royal family on British trade and international relations.

After Buckingham Palace was bombed, someone raised the question of evacuating the princesses to Canada with the then Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother). Her reply was;

I agree with you, Pamela. Even though I live in the U.S., I love and care about the Windsors. My father was the last of his line of royalty in Budapest, Hungary. Our family was stripped of our titles and holdings when WWII broke out. So, in essence, I probably understand more as well as have more respect for royal families. I was born and raised in a British Commonwealth Country. The Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Andrew visited our City in 1979 on an official visit. I was in the front row of the crowd of people hoping to see her during their walk about. The Queen and Prince Philip stopped right in front of me and they each spoke to me. To this day, and I am now my 60s, it still remains one of the most special moments of my life. RIP Prince Philip, and love live our wonderful Queen 💗

I may not be a fan of monarchy, but taking that huge responsibility, a responsibility that will affect millions of people and many country, at the tender age of 25 requires great courage. And doing this kind of thing for 60 years is definitely quite impressive. However, to achieve that maturity level at such a young age, I cant imagine her childhood. I hope a younger member can be well equipped to shed some burdens off her shoulder so she can truly enjoy a life and just be herself.

Yes, on paper.
A lot of these powers are exercised on Her Majesty’s behalf by ministers - things such as issuing or withdrawing passports that, without the Royal Prerogative, would require an act of parliament each time. The Queen’s political powers nowadays are largely ceremonial, though some are actively used by The Queen such as at General Elections or are available in times of crisis and some are used by Ministers for expediency when needed.
The Queen’s judicial powers are now very minimal, and there is only really one (Royal Pardon) which is used on a regular basis, with others having been delegated to judges and parliament through time. She does not make law nor does she have the capacity to directly change the Government’s policy.
Her power is more about influence - a discreet nod of the head, a polite word in the ear of a Prime Minister at their weekly meeting, or a strategic patronage of a cause being overlooked by the Government - is how she can indirectly effect our world without us even knowing.
The last time a British monarch can be said to force the PM to change his policy was probably in 1931. Ramsay Macdonald wanted to resign the PM when his Labour Party split on budget issues. George V convinced him to try a coalition with the Tories and Liberals, and in some accounts even refused to accept his resignation until Macdonald conferred with the other parties. Supposedly, George VI in 1945 suggested that Clement Attlee make Ernest Bevin his Foreign Secretary rather than his original choice of Hugh Dalton. However, the readiness by which Attlee agreed suggested he was thinking that way already.

My total admiration to the Queen. She is one of the most disciplined people in the world. If I could meet any person on the planet, it would have to be the Queen. I waa born in the same month, and I think I share the love for order, tradition and discipline. Unfortunately I won't be able to meet her, as I do not live in a British country. I hope she gets to reign for a long time and continue her amazing commitment to her country and people.

She's an amazing person and she's the reason I want to take part in politics. Watching this, like I have other documentaries about her, I still can't help but feel in awe of her. There will never be another Queen like her. I can't picture England without her sometimes. I even cried when I watched her coronation. It's been said so many times that it borders on becoming cliche, but it's true that to have such a huge burden on her shoulders... I mean, WOW! I cried because I felt sad for her. I cried thinking if... she had ever had the chance to do so. I have the biggest respect for her majesty.

The Monarchy truly is a necessary and important thing, being French Canadian, I am surrounded by the most anti-British people there is and this documentary really proves my point when I tell sceptics that the Monarchy and the Empire are a reuniting sense of pride, identity and most importantly, a constant, experienced way of keeping peace and well being inside a nation.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for this woman, I a very distant American of Tudor Heritage I can't imagine living a life such as hers, every second of the day planned realizing that you are not a person, but property of the state, I admire her, yet do not envy her. Enjoyed this excellent and very informative explanations by the eloquent Andrew Marr about the Queen of England, and to why she has been for so long, so successful and admired all over the world. It is very hard act to follow.
She is an expert diplomat, selling britain abroad. She doesnt make deaLs, but brings pride, strength, friendship and will bring support for britain in the future because of a cemented friendship and diplomacy, a sense of self- identity and national unity.
I am proud of my American republic, and will never bow to another. However: if I had to be a subject of a monarch, I would not mind Elizabeth. She understands that for enormous privilege, she needs to serve her country.

Love this documentary about the most awesome of Monarchs. They explained Queen Elizabeth II very well and proved that her people still need her very much. Idk why anyone under her reign would ever doubt the royal families worth. I just love her so very much. Queen Elizabeth II is a wonderful role model for all women. I'm actually jealous of Great Britain that they have such a magnificent monarch n head of state.
I consider myself one of her most loyal subjects and must say it is a sort of comfort having her on the throne. Politicians, especially prime ministers, come and go but the Monarchy is forever
