    Top Dog Facts About the BEAGLE
    Check out More at BrooklynsCorner.com
    The Beagle is a small-sized hound breed, similar in appearance to the larger foxhound. The name is generally believed to be of either French or Gaelic origin. The modern Beagle was developed in Great Britain, but has remained more popular in the US and Canada than in its country of origin. The modern breed of the Beagle came about through a long history of mixing of diverse hound bloodlines. Dogs similar to the modern Beagle in appearance and utility are known to have been around even in 5th century BC in Greece. Bread for small game hunting, these small-sized hounds could be carried easily for long distances to the forests, and were good hunters, who could be followed on foot even by children and old men.
    The AKC recognizes two varieties of Beagles now: one has dogs of size less than 13 inches, the other averages between 13 and 15 inches. The weight ranges from 18 to 30 pounds. The females are slightly smaller than the males of the breed. Distinguishing physical features are a square-cut muzzle, large hazel or brown eyes, and long-ish ears turned towards the cheek. The coat can have two or three colors, almost always with a white base color, in combination with another shade like black, brown, tan, red or lemon. Beagles are also involved in the recent trend of ‘designer dogs’, the most popular being the Puggle, a cross between a Pug and a Beagle.
    Grooming: A Beagle can shed a lot, and regular brushing to remove dead hair can help minimize this. A hound glove is recommended. Its hanging ears can trap dirt and moisture and need regular cleaning to prevent infection. Some Beagles also have slight folding skin around the neck, which requires checking for dirt too. Nails have to be trimmed to prevent overgrowth; teeth have to be brushed regularly.
    Temperament: The Beagle’s popularity is an indication of its friendly nature. It loves company, is very tolerant of kids and gets along well with other pets. Prone to separation anxiety, it can chew through shoes and furniture if left alone for too long. It also enjoys going off on a scent, and not giving up till it finds the source.
    Training: It is an intelligent dog, but like in the case of most breeds developed for hunting, its single-minded nature requires patience to train. Food rewards work very well. It is suited to be a house pet, and does not require exhausting outdoor activity, but daily walk on leash is important. Beagles are also used commonly for detection work, in pet therapy, and for search-and-rescue operations.
    Health: The typical lifespan of a Beagle is 12 to 15 years. Obesity is a common problem, and regular exercise and controlled diet can keep that in check. Long ears and large eyes are prone to infection. Epilepsy is seen more often than in most other dog breeds, but can be controlled with medication. Certain other diseases related to dwarfism and slowed coordination are observed, but are rare.
    A dog of colonial origins that has made America its home, the Beagle is loving and lovable, suited for a small apartment or a large house with a yard. Its antics will keep you and any children regaled for hours. Just do your research on the breeder you use - its popularity means that there are people who do not know what they are doing, and in it just for the money.
    Facts:
    • The Beagle has consistently ranked in the top ten most popular breeds in North America for over 30 years.
    • Queen Elizabeth I was known to have been very fond of her Pocket Beagles, and would take them to royal dinners to entertain her guests.
    • The famous ship on which Charles Darwin made his voyage was known as HMS Beagle.
    • Other famous cartoon Beagles include Garfield’s friend Odie; Walt Disney’s criminal and clumsy Beagle Boys; and Cartoon Network’s Courage the Cowardly Dog.

    We Lost our Beagle last night, 13 yrs old, SMORES, went quietly in his sleep. I will never forget, every time we got a pizza delivery he would trot after you looking up saying to you IS THAT FOR ME! He was diagnosed a few days ago with a mass on his spleen, was going to vet today for ultrasound. Godspeed RIP puppy boy. He is nicer and kinder than most humans. One of our cats kept a vigil right by Smores nose last night.

    I have a 9 month old Beagle and he is the most adorable friendly dog you could ever want. However, he is very hard work, and also very destructive if not kept occupied at all times. My last dog was a Jack Russell, and compared to the Beagle he was a dream to look after. My Beagle was bought for me by my daughter as a surprise because she knew how upset I was when my Jack Russell died. When she went to see the puppies she was worried she had picked the wrong type of dog because he seemed "a bit boring". If you have a Beagle, the boring bits are where you can relax and recover. Would not change him for the world, but it is not a breed to rush into without careful consideration first.

    I rescued a Beagle two weeks ago. She has the ZOOMIES and is VERY vocal if we leave her. I had to get a bark collar because I couldn't even do a quick Walmart run without her freaking out. She is one year and about three months old. Whoever had her had her crate trained.. Thank the Lord! She ate my sons toys, chewed up a remote, and my sandals when I was gone for 40 minutes smh. She does great in the crate and doesn't wine unless you cut the lights off. Doesn't eat much and we do three miles in the AM and maybe a 10-15 minute walk at night and shes a happy girl!

    Check beagles 101 from animal planet, which has more accurate information.
    Some corrections: Beagles are small, but they are NOT the best breed for an apartment life. Beagles are hunting animals, they are HIGH ENERGY dogs, and has tons of energy to spend, otherwise they can become very destructive around the house.
    Another reason why a beagle may not be the best breed for an apartment is... (This is huge) they are VERY VOCAL! Be ready for lots of barking and whining, specially if your beagle still has pent up energy. But training and proper exercise reduces it a lot. My beagle is very quiet, even in comparison to the neighbor's dog (mixed breed).
    Lastly, they are a bit stubborn, BUT they ARE trainable. Owners need to invest a lot of time and patience, 100% consistency and discipline.
    Oh, one last thing, beagles have a pretty good health, in comparison with other breeds.
    Check out the Animal Planet 101 videos!

      @cpu-sailors6948 Před 6 lety +2

      Rescued an abused beagle from Humane society in Indianapolis..I live in a apartment and he does fine..I grew up in Kentucky around many family and friends who owned beagles for hunting and the truth is even if you have a thousand acres and a fenced in yard you cannot let beagles run around off the leash or stay unsupervised for long periods of time..Most hunters keep them separate from other breeds and in pens or they would run off and get lost,hit by a car or killed by coyotes .I have seen many beagles dig under a fence in less than five minutes and escape..They have to be trained to be used in hunting and it is no easy task and a lot of hard work for both the owner and the dog.You do not just get a beagle and take him hunting..As long as you walk and play with your beagle along with lots of love they make great apartment dogs..With all due respect Ivne Haas do not confuse TV with reality and never let it guide your moral compass on anything.Real life and reality is the best way to gain experience and knowledge..The truth is it has nothing to do with where you live and everything to do with the pets owner.

    • @ivnehaas
      @ivnehaas Před 6 lety +7

      FamishedØats Dude, chill out hahahaha I am discouraging no one, quite the opposite. I wish people were more aware of beagles tendencies before buying one. A lot of people end up returning their pups or giving them away when they are not ready for one like they thought they were, and I would like to avoid that. I HAVE A BEAGLE myself and I love him to death. Now next time you talk to me, take a chill pill. That much anger is not very healthy. Just saying. ;)

    • @ivnehaas
      @ivnehaas Před 6 lety +2

      cpu-sailors Same thing I replied to other guy. I just wish people were more aware of the breed tendencies, so increasing the chances the pups don't end up being given away.
      I am really happy to hear your pup is well adjusted to apartment life! And you are right, tendencies are just tendencies, and as you get to know your beagle you can tell what he does and likes. My beagle, for instance, can run around my 4 acre property unsupervised wearing his invisible fence collar. Now I know that is not "typical", they are escape artists. Search for "beagle escape" on CZcams. It's crazy how smart they are!

    Why hounds are different
    .
    .
    Here is a basic underlying influence...a basic understanding...regarding your hound dog that I think most people miss.
    Hounds do not believe that they need you. You are a convenience...like a favorite coffee cup or a favourite pair of shoes. If the cup is broken or the shoes are lost, we can get along just fine with another.
    Let me explain:
    Where other breeds of dogs like Labradors, Shepherds, Cattle dogs to an extent, and a HOST of others are bred to work WITH man. Meaning that their original bred temperament is to work alongside man in cooperation to achieve a goal. The Cattle dog follows man commands to herd the livestock. The Lab follows the hunters commands to get the quarry - so and so forth. They are a team mates of man. Neither can do their work without the other --- and so they have been bred for eons to have that in their make up ---to be anxious to please. Even the worst behaved Labrador cares when mom and dad are annoyed. It is in their DNA to make man happy.
    Hounds ---not so much.
    Hounds have been bred for eons to be taken out to the edge of the woods or field and be let loose to go out and do what they do with NO INSTRUCTION from the hunter or handler. They go out and do their thing, all on their own. They make their own decisions and do their own work ---and when that work is done and they have found their quarry ---they command/call the hunter to come to them with those beautiful voices. (who is working for whom in that scenario?)
    Do you see how your hound thinks differently?
    Life with a Hound is far more like having a spouse than a dog. It is far more of a "cooperative effort" with all the give and take that implies. Hounds are not going to do what you say just because you have said it. You are secondary to their desire. There has to be something in it for them. There has to be a trade off. If there is no reward or benefit for the Hound, the Hound cares little what you are asking him/her to do. People incorrectly refer to this and being stubborn or worse, stupid. Hounds are actually neither of those things - they are just independent. They prioritize things differently than do other breeds. They prioritize differently and you are not always their priority. This is EXACTLY AS THEY SHOULD BE. They were bred to be this way. It is all necessary to be a Houndy Dawg.
    When working with a Hound you have to always be thinking --how do I make myself the priority? What do I have to give this dog to make me more important than what it smells - or wants (and do not expect that anything will ever be 100% successful everytime - always be looking for your Hound to act like a Hound.)
    We humans always think we are in charge of things. We think that we are top of the chain, the head honcho's..and we naturally approach training our dogs and living with our dogs this way - as though we are in charge.
    Your Hound doesn't see it that way.
    Your Hound - at best - sees you as a family member - as a sibling (if you are very fortunate- as a parent). Do you walk into your sister or brothers house, start barking orders and they hop to?
    Mostly your Hound sees you as a good friend ---and what do we do with our friends? When a friend does something for us, we return those favors. There is give and take. When a friendship is out of balance - when one friend takes and takes but does not give -- the friendship suffers. It is okay for one friend to be the strong friend - the dominant friend in the partnership---but it is a partnership.
    Hounds are happiest when their humans are humble.

      Rob, your description is better than this video. That was my experience. Mine ran away. As much as I love dogs, I will own another beagle because of my experiences with i your description.

    Well my Beagle dog is 11 years old and he just looks like a. Very young dog and he runs just as fast as he always has such a beautiful dog the Beagle dog .💖he loves my husband watches everywhere he goes but He doesn't takes no notice of me even though I'm the one that buys all the food . Believe me I'm very good to the dog we all love him so I'm thinking he does have one boss and that's it .wear on 2 acres but if he gets away from us you should see us running around trying to get him but when my husband comes home he goes straight to him .🤔 I like to know what this is I know there's dog trainers out there that can tell me this one.. and also why he only looks at my husband and not my son's or me..🤔💖💜
